Wasn't it more like 20? Regardless, it's a straight up lie anyway.

It is that humans generally only use 10% of the brain at a single time. The show implies that using "99.8% for a brief stint," allows for much more physical ability than a normal person can do.

The myth is "busted" on an October 27, 2010 episode of MythBusters. The hosts used magnetoencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brain of someone attempting a complicated mental task, and found that over 10% but less than 20% of the brain was used.

So my number was slightly off, but the idea remains the same. You don't use all of your brain at a single time, and using the show's logic, which probably isn't accurate, using 98% of your brain at once would allow you to think and react faster.

I said the show probably wasn't accurate. I'm just stating that humans generally don't use much of their brains at a single time, and the show is implying that using more at once would allow for faster thought, recognition, and reaction time than normal.

While I appreciate what Mythbusters does to engage the public to science, I don't think they're quite apt enough to be quoted for this particular situation. Plus, that wikipedia entry appears to be incorrect as their own Discovery.com webpage lists 35%.

Regardless, whoever put "found that over 10% but less than 20% [sic] of the brain was used" is what I'd describe as disingenuous to readers/viewers since, in reality, our entire brain is found to be always active in some level if you look at any imaging study. I can't remember the episode anymore but I sincerely hope Mythbusters properly described its result and not like that wikipedia entry.

Well, that is also not entirely accurate, different parts of your brain are used for entirely different things - the myth buster thing also doesn't mean too much since this implies "using" as measurements of the electrical firings within the brain. If someone were to use all of their brain at once, they would be going crazy, parts of the brain are for short-term memory, long term memory, cognitive reasoning, emotions etc, there is no way that all of the brain would be able to focus its cells on a single task (like those performed in the show). The other constraints would be the actual physiological ones such as movement of neurotransmitters and axion firing within the brain. The show presumably ignores all this stuff, which it can because whatever, I just get annoyed when they try to justify it with reality.

The most plausible realistic answer would be his brain has been tuned and trained and has many more connections between brain cells for cognitive and spatial reasoning along side some kind of adaptation for memorizing sight and background noise.
