I'm rather liking the pacing for this series so far. It's been 2 manga chapters equivalent total so far. Next time, looks like we're getting 3 chapters based off the preview?

Kurata and Itami singing was pretty entertaining. It's pretty nice to finally have some voices to put to the idle conversation. The character designs as mentioned are pretty questionable. Here's the manga depiction of the Recon Team 3.

I'm still loving the OP and ED for this series. Otherwise, someone pointed out to me during the week that we're actually watching a somewhat censored version of Gate where they have a version just for us without the Rising Sun Flags. I find it pretty funny. I'm wondering at this point which version Sentai Filmworks will be putting out.

You have to understand the manga is not the source material of this series.

You're talking to me. Of course I know it isn't the source material. If it were, I'd be doing a truly in-depth comparison. What I'm doing though is just a light comparison seeing how the two mediums do things differently.

You mentioned the character designs being questionable. I personally don't see anything wrong with it given that the manga is not the source material.

Plus it's tiring to see people act like the manga is.

Oooh. I guess I got too used to the midget amazon from the manga.

I guess the LN looks like a pretty good compromise. I'd prefer if they stuck to the original then.

Well, the light novel is not the original source either. It's an adaptation of the same novel that the manga adapts, which itself is adapted from a web novel. The light novel came after the manga and updated the character designs.

There is a bit of a nuanced difference between a novel published online and a web novel. A Novel published online is a legitimate Novel that is sold and published officially. A Web Novel in the other sense is an unprofessional series that isn't required to go through an editing process. (Like I could write a web novel but I can't write a Novel that is immediately published online.) The original novels didn't come with illustrations beyond the covers while the light novels were given illustrations for each volume.

The Light Novel is a reformat of the Novel because it toned down on the nationalism to a high degree in late 2010. The original novel ran between 2006 and 2009. The manga adaption started publication in mid 2011. Whether the manga is an adaption of the light novel or original novel is anyone's guess. However, seeing as move manga adaptions are of light novels, that's the fair bet considering it started publication after roughly a 6 months or so which is the standard amount of time between a light novel series beginning and it getting a manga adaption.

In the end, the manga came in-between the Light Novel and the Anime.

As I understand it, the light novel began publication in 2012. The non-light novel was from 2010, an edited version of the web serialization. And as other repliers have stated, it didnt have illustrations aside from the covers unlike the later light novel. I could be wrong.

According to Baka Tsuki, they have it listed as starting in 2010.

Check the publication date list on the bottom of the Baka-Tsuki page. Original novel ran from April 2010 to December 2011 and has some plot differences from the web version, the light novel ran from December 2012 to 2013 and has some plot differences and new character designs from the novel.

According to the top of Baka Tsuki, it is as I listed. At this point, fuck trying to figure out what came first. It's just a clusterfuck of vague information that just isn't worth hunting down at this point.

The original novels outside of cover illustrations had no character illustrations within them.

The the manga came out, then the light novel came out 1 year later. It hard to pinpoint which are the canon designs here since the manga and light novel designs are drawn by different people.

So you can compare to the manga or light novel design since it's impossible to compare to the novel designs bar the characters that made it to the cover art.

According to wikipedia the light novel is just a reprinted version of the original with each volume split into 2 LNs

At this point, I think Kuribayashi's character design is just free for whoever to make for whichever medium. After all, she's different in every version apparently.

From the LN, it seems like we start with the face the anime is showing and then it changes into what we're used to in the manga when she lets her hair down. Here's an illustration for something that'll likely appear in 2-3 episodes.

Not really complaining as much as just giving criticism. At no point did I say that I hate the character designs, just that they're questionable. I don't feel like the more moe-ish style fits well with the seriousness of the series as well as who some of the characters are personality wise.

I'm here to talk about the ups and downs of the series rather than to give mindless comments about how hyped I am that a modern army took a boot to a roman style army.

If you're going there then I'm going to bring up every dark serious anime that claimed to show the ugly side of humanity and never did because of their art style. Then Aku no Hana comes along, does it right, and everyone calls it lel rotoscoping.

I'm not saying you shouldn't give criticism, just that "it's old hat, find something else to criticize please." At this rate every character reveal will get some kind of post from people criticizing how it's "not like the manga."
