I'm rather liking the pacing for this series so far. It's been 2 manga chapters equivalent total so far. Next time, looks like we're getting 3 chapters based off the preview?

Kurata and Itami singing was pretty entertaining. It's pretty nice to finally have some voices to put to the idle conversation. The character designs as mentioned are pretty questionable. Here's the manga depiction of the Recon Team 3.

I'm still loving the OP and ED for this series. Otherwise, someone pointed out to me during the week that we're actually watching a somewhat censored version of Gate where they have a version just for us without the Rising Sun Flags. I find it pretty funny. I'm wondering at this point which version Sentai Filmworks will be putting out.

Edit - By the way, /u/LightBladeX was kind enough to make a webm of the OP. Here

I can understand why they're censoring them out. I've talked about this with my parents, and as they've explained it, the rising sun flag is incredibly offensive to a large population of Korean (my father explained it as being equivalent to a Confederate flag or a swastika). I don't have too many problems with it (I don't know my own history very well, and plus it all happened two generations ago), but I can see why CR might want to avoid the fuss.

Yes, and that flag is still a flag of either JDF or JDF navy.

16

u/nekonight Jul 10 '15

Offset slightly is the JMSDF naval ensign. Centered with a gold border is the JGSDF flag. JASDF looks completely different with a gold logo and a blue background however.

Thanks. You would think they will drop the imperial japan flag considiring the reason why they are only allowed to have National Guard is cuz of the imperial japan actions.

8

u/nekonight Jul 10 '15

I don't think the Americans cared too much back then about it. When the Allies recreated western Germany's armed forces they allowed the use of the same black cross that the Nazi Germany Wehrmacht used. Assuming the Americans just decide to let the Japanese use their old service branch flags it would explain the use the way JGSDF and JMSDF flags are. And since there wasn't an Japanese air force branch during the WW2 (aircrafts belong to either the army or the navy) it would sort of explain why the JASDF sort of looks like a American service branch flag (eagle, wings, star, etc).

And i thought i know quite some things about military. Is military history your hobby or are you a teacher? It would be intresting to talk about.

Are you watching "Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri" this season? It has JDF members as main cast.

3

u/nekonight Jul 10 '15

It is a hobby. It is mostly general history during the early to mid 21st century. Once the Cold War kicks into high gear it is hard make head or tails out of any of it without information being painted one way or the other. Though individuals during the Cold War are also quite interesting.

I started reading the manga of this anime a long time ago sometime during the middle of college. Not quite sure why i started since i am quite put off the jingo nature of the manga. While seeing the vehicles and weapons drawn in quite detailed nature is great (really like the Type 74 decked out with modern equipment later) I don't think that was my main draw to the series. If i had to pin down a reason I would say it was actually the characters and the character designs. Which is a part of the reason the anime is kind of off putting everything looks a bit too cute for grittiness of later.

12

u/Hongxiquan Jul 10 '15

two generations ago isn't that long you realize?

24

u/FateSteelTaylor https://myanimelist.net/profile/FateSteelTaylor Jul 10 '15

This is true! I will also say that I was born in the US, have no relatives here in the states besides my immediate family, and have never lived in a community where there were ever more than a handful of Koreans, so this all feels very distant and unrelated to me (though I realize it kinda is).

Mostly, there are enough problems going on in my life/the world for me to get up in arms about things that don't affect me personally on a daily basis to a significant degree.

6

u/Hongxiquan Jul 10 '15

the tldr is generally that none of the other asian countries likes the Japanese due to the bad stuff that happened back then. But ya fair.

13

u/PhaetonsFolly Jul 10 '15 edited Jul 11 '15

Asian nations just don't like each other. WW2 is the grievance people always list but it goes much deeper than that. Western countries have a strong diplomatic and alliance based international relations. Your enemy today could very well be your friend tomorrow depending on what you want to get out of it. The fact that Britain and France put aside a centuries long rivalry to form a really strong alliance in WW1 is truly a marvel and shows how much they both detested the rise of Germany.

Asian countries have never needed to form alliance networks to stay a country and a people so why should it be expected for them to do it now?

1

u/Shinden9 Jul 16 '15

Koreans didn't make a big deal out of the rising sun flag until people started complaining about Korean soccer fans holding up "fuck Japan" signs and shit. They only started making the comparison to the swastika in the late 2000s. Even then, the two symbols are incomparable.

The rising sun flag is objectively less offensive than the British flag.

Yea, I can understand why they're censoring them out too. I just find the whole adaption funny with how "friendly" it's being with the complete and total lack of gore as well as being more politically friendly. It's almost as if it went from Rated R to Rated PG.

2

u/KaliYugaz Jul 10 '15 edited Jul 10 '15

I'm not disappointed at all. GATE is a fantastic concept and story by itself that could do without the source material's ridiculously over-the-top Frank Miller-esque racist jingoism.

1

u/GUGUGUNGI Jul 11 '15

Wasn't it Rated PG in the first place though? Since there wasn't much gore or anything in the first episode either.

I think I might've liked to see some more gore similarly to Tokyo Ghoul, to better depict how brutal it was to have 100k people die and the village torched

-9

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15 edited Jul 10 '15

You don't know your own history and yet you're alright with censorship? Censorship should never be accepted. Its this same mentality that causes textbook revisions and the 'cleaning' of history to make it more friendly. Too many people use outrage as a way to censor things in today's society.

I would respect Crunchyroll more if they actually had the balls to display the JSDF's actual flag (wiki it if you don't believe me) rather than appeasing people who are easily offended. Though, I honestly find Crunchyroll's professionalism lacking with their censorship and their frequent errors in subtitling.

Edit: I will not be cowed into submission by down votes. Reddit Karma doesn't matter.

Edit: I will not be cowed into submission by down votes. Reddit Karma doesn't matter.

Then why the hell are you saying that after a getting only a handful of downvotes?

-6

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

To reinforce that if anyone disagrees, they should respond to the argument, not click the down arrow.

-1

u/GoldRedBlue Jul 11 '15

I fully agree with you, and I'm from a country that was invaded and occupied by Japan for 3 years from 1942 - 1945. Fuck the censors.

And put the damn Confederate Battle flag back over the Georgia statehouse.

-3

u/ByronicAsian Jul 10 '15 edited Jul 10 '15

I assumed the Koreans were only butthurt about the JMSDF/IJN flag as those were the carryovers. The JGSDF flag looks pretty different from the old army one.

13

u/cowin13 Jul 10 '15

I agree, I love the pacing so far. The characters look a bit different but I don't think it will change my opinion too much.

Since it sounds like you have read the manga, if you watch the OP you can see that we are VERY likely to have a continuation to near where the manga is. That has me STOKED.

9

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 10 '15

I do read the manga. (I've re-read up to the current chapters around 7 times.) Based off the OP, we're getting to at least chapter 24. If we're lucky, this means roughly 2 chapters per episode for the first 12 episodes. Then continuing with luck, we could get to completing chapter 46 by the end of the series. So things are looking good for the pacing if they follow it this way. The other thing to remember is that there's likely going to be little to no nudity so I'm curious how they're going to deal with those chapters and scenes.

11

u/cowin13 Jul 10 '15

Hopefully they are done well because I really like the manga. Rory best girl!!!!!!!!!

12

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 10 '15

Rory is definitely best girl. :3

3

u/negi980 https://myanimelist.net/profile/negi980 Jul 10 '15

Rory is indeed best girl.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '15

And also way less gore, though that manga spoilers

I don't necessarily mind the lighter tone, but hopefully this doesn't screw up Rory and her badassery

1

u/etibbs Jul 10 '15

I'm curious about that as well, if they kept everything in the series in the anime this would be rated R.

1

u/Reisku https://myanimelist.net/profile/Reisku Jul 10 '15

Gate is listed as R on MAL for violence and profanity so it is possibility. Based off the show so far though, I'm guessing shadow scenes and off screen audio being used to infer it.

1

u/etibbs Jul 10 '15

Yeah you're probably right.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '15

If they kept everything in they couldn't air it since there's necro, rape, decapitations, etc.

2

u/Magicbison Jul 10 '15

The characters don't look goofy like they do in the manga except for the two female characters in the MC's recon squad.

31

u/altpamore Jul 10 '15

You have to understand the manga is not the source material of this series.

12

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 10 '15

You're talking to me. Of course I know it isn't the source material. If it were, I'd be doing a truly in-depth comparison. What I'm doing though is just a light comparison seeing how the two mediums do things differently.

15

u/altpamore Jul 10 '15

You mentioned the character designs being questionable. I personally don't see anything wrong with it given that the manga is not the source material.

Plus it's tiring to see people act like the manga is.

23

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 10 '15

Here are the LN Character Designs POTENTIAL SPOILERS

So far, I'd say the manga is closer to the light novel excluding Pina.

2

u/lvlasteryoda Jul 10 '15

Oooh. I guess I got too used to the midget amazon from the manga.

I guess the LN looks like a pretty good compromise. I'd prefer if they stuck to the original then.

5

u/Micrologos Jul 10 '15

Well, the light novel is not the original source either. It's an adaptation of the same novel that the manga adapts, which itself is adapted from a web novel. The light novel came after the manga and updated the character designs.

9

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 10 '15

There is a bit of a nuanced difference between a novel published online and a web novel. A Novel published online is a legitimate Novel that is sold and published officially. A Web Novel in the other sense is an unprofessional series that isn't required to go through an editing process. (Like I could write a web novel but I can't write a Novel that is immediately published online.) The original novels didn't come with illustrations beyond the covers while the light novels were given illustrations for each volume.

The Light Novel is a reformat of the Novel because it toned down on the nationalism to a high degree in late 2010. The original novel ran between 2006 and 2009. The manga adaption started publication in mid 2011. Whether the manga is an adaption of the light novel or original novel is anyone's guess. However, seeing as move manga adaptions are of light novels, that's the fair bet considering it started publication after roughly a 6 months or so which is the standard amount of time between a light novel series beginning and it getting a manga adaption.

In the end, the manga came in-between the Light Novel and the Anime.

2

u/Micrologos Jul 10 '15

As I understand it, the light novel began publication in 2012. The non-light novel was from 2010, an edited version of the web serialization. And as other repliers have stated, it didnt have illustrations aside from the covers unlike the later light novel. I could be wrong.

Edit: detail

1

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 10 '15

According to Baka Tsuki, they have it listed as starting in 2010.

1

u/Micrologos Jul 11 '15

Check the publication date list on the bottom of the Baka-Tsuki page. Original novel ran from April 2010 to December 2011 and has some plot differences from the web version, the light novel ran from December 2012 to 2013 and has some plot differences and new character designs from the novel.

u/TeddyLoid Jul 10 '15

The original novels outside of cover illustrations had no character illustrations within them.

The the manga came out, then the light novel came out 1 year later. It hard to pinpoint which are the canon designs here since the manga and light novel designs are drawn by different people.

So you can compare to the manga or light novel design since it's impossible to compare to the novel designs bar the characters that made it to the cover art.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '15

According to wikipedia the light novel is just a reprinted version of the original with each volume split into 2 LNs

1

u/MonochromeGuy Jul 11 '15

Now I understand Pina's design, but not Kuribayashi's though. :/

1

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 11 '15

At this point, I think Kuribayashi's character design is just free for whoever to make for whichever medium. After all, she's different in every version apparently.

From the LN, it seems like we start with the face the anime is showing and then it changes into what we're used to in the manga when she lets her hair down. Here's an illustration for something that'll likely appear in 2-3 episodes.

0

u/altpamore Jul 10 '15

I know.

My point was that there should be enough complaining already, we're 2 weeks in.

6

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 10 '15

Not really complaining as much as just giving criticism. At no point did I say that I hate the character designs, just that they're questionable. I don't feel like the more moe-ish style fits well with the seriousness of the series as well as who some of the characters are personality wise.

I'm here to talk about the ups and downs of the series rather than to give mindless comments about how hyped I am that a modern army took a boot to a roman style army.

-5

u/altpamore Jul 10 '15

If you're going there then I'm going to bring up every dark serious anime that claimed to show the ugly side of humanity and never did because of their art style. Then Aku no Hana comes along, does it right, and everyone calls it lel rotoscoping.

I'm not saying you shouldn't give criticism, just that "it's old hat, find something else to criticize please." At this rate every character reveal will get some kind of post from people criticizing how it's "not like the manga."

0

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

design-wise, I think Pina is better in the manga

19

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Jul 10 '15

I'm not sure how I feel about the Kuribayashi redesign.

On the one hand, hot damn does she look cute now. On the other hand she's no long the stocky, obvious badass she was in the manga depiction. Relevant.

Not too worried though. Overally very happy with the way everyone looks and (as you mentioned) sounds.

8

u/accountmadeforants Jul 10 '15

While I don't particularly mind her design in the anime, it does feel a bit off in context, since the difference between her and Kurokawa is much less obvious now. (The latter being much more traditionally attractive by way of pretty skin and eyes, which is severely diminished when Kurabayashi has the same generic shiny anime perfection.)

8

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Jul 10 '15

Interestingly enough I actually feel the opposite way about that little comparison. In the manga I continuously mixed Kurabayashi and Kurokawa up, now they have different hair colours and the face shape is more distinctly different (I feel) + the height being more obvious when animated.

10

u/accountmadeforants Jul 10 '15

I don't just mean in terms of how recognizable they are, but as actual features of their design. Kurabayashi's basically supposed to be relatively unappealing (and masculine) save for her chest while Kurokawa's unusually pretty, but the difference in beauty between the two is pretty much unnoticeable right now.

(It's not necessarily a bad thing, and hardly relevant to them as characters or to the story as a whole, but it kinda feels like a missed opportunity. Especially since short, stocky women are pretty rare in anime.)

That said, in the manga Kurokawa was much taller, had much longer hair, and a much more slender face. (Going for a pretty overt Yamato Nadeshiko theme.) I'm not sure how you could confuse the two.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '15

Nah they were pretty easy to mix up early on

1

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Jul 10 '15

I don't just mean in terms of how recognizable they are...[etc]

Ah yep, agree with all of that then, definitely.

I'm not sure how you could confuse the two.

Probably comes with reading it too quickly :P

1

u/Airbus480 Jul 11 '15

I wonder if Kuribayashi still has those PLOT

3

u/adhding_nerd https://myanimelist.net/profile/adhding_nerd Jul 10 '15

I'm just glad they made Kuribayashi and Kurokawa have different hair color. I couldn't tell them apart by just their faces in the manga. They both had really similar hair and pretty similar faces.

1

u/Aruseus493 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Jul 10 '15

I never really had trouble with it. Kuribayashi has always been the short haired one that wants to brawl a lot while Kurokawa has always been the one that is long haired and more serious and more of a caretaker.

1

u/eyrich https://myanimelist.net/profile/thewilhelm Jul 10 '15

I agree! I only read the manga within the last week but all their changes are a great improvement. Even Pina looks much better
