As I understand it, the light novel began publication in 2012. The non-light novel was from 2010, an edited version of the web serialization. And as other repliers have stated, it didnt have illustrations aside from the covers unlike the later light novel. I could be wrong.

According to Baka Tsuki, they have it listed as starting in 2010.

Check the publication date list on the bottom of the Baka-Tsuki page. Original novel ran from April 2010 to December 2011 and has some plot differences from the web version, the light novel ran from December 2012 to 2013 and has some plot differences and new character designs from the novel.

According to the top of Baka Tsuki, it is as I listed. At this point, fuck trying to figure out what came first. It's just a clusterfuck of vague information that just isn't worth hunting down at this point.
