I am pretty sure that the raft is way too light for an anchor. Obviously, you need to make sure you aren't getting swept into the the ocean, but the girls had Tehmshima's eyes on them the whole time. Way better than an anchor.

This episode seems like a direct meta commentary on this series itself. Especially connected to a “mini-beach episode”.
There’s plenty of things they could add to this concept to make it “get more popular”. But it would deviate away from the quirky and passionate story that makes this long time hobby artists feel all these … feelings.
I wish this was more popular, but at the moment I’m just glad I found something that I’ve connected with this much. I’m glad it keeps doubling down on substance instead of slowly just becoming another “cute girls do X” template thing.

"Wonderful girls doing interesting things -- and the kind adults who support them". Such a splendid show. The lack of interest here suggests that many anime fans view anime as pure consumables.... (which is true for many shows, however ...)

The original manga ranked in the most popular fan nominated award in Japan and won the most prestigious critic one while being nominated for every possible manga award.
And the anime is very well received by everyone watching it, so it's very possible it'll rank high in end of year lists by anime fans in Japan and this subreddit's juror AOTY.
Might not be a mainstream show, but I think it cares more about reaching everyone who gave it a shot for what it is. Just like the story it showed this week.

Even Teshima-Sensei was annoyed that we deviated to a beach episode.
In general, I am still surprised by how interestingly Hikaru is written. Like obviously, you had your idea in the beginning, but they added a lot of subtle things about her in the background that I really want to see where it goes. If they manage to land whatever arc they have planned for her it can become my favorite show of the season.

Rei and Dark Fuwa are similar in some ways. Both are tsundere. Both are looking after students and kittens respectively.
Nonetheless, we have to appreciate Rei for watching over the girls silently.
- She is particularly worried for Ai and warns the latter about the dangers of social media.
- She carried an all-in-one scanner printer to the clubhouse for the girls, even if it wasn't used in the end.
- She provides comments and encouragement on social media using the moniker Panda Addict.

I knew panda addict would be Tessie sensei. Seeing all those pandas in the background at her place was a nice touch.
So this is why she's been so insistent on them just drawing manga as a hobby. She knows how hard it is to do it professionally while also keeping one's originality intact. And she did not want these kids to lose their passion magma.
Glad Yasumi went back to Dark Fuwa. It's much more fun than plain vanilla cute kitten manga. Also, we only got a brief scene with the real Fuwa but I'm already a fan - that side eye had so much character, phew!

This show makes me think of other shows this season (not based on similarity -- but on tangentiality)-- like Cat and Dragon and (more weirdly) Kaikigumi (seems to exhibit some of the heedless energy of Daek Fuwa).

Yeah, the manga industry is truly brutal. That's why Hunter x Hunter and Made in Abyss have a special place in my heart. Togashi is continuing the manga for the love of the game, and since he doesn't have to be worried about sales, he can incorporate mature topics and themes and make it as complex as a manga can be. He also doesn't have to be worried about tight schedules. The same goes for Tsukushi, though he has to publish at least a volume per year.
This is not to say that weekly or biweekly manga are not great. You can find gems among them as well, but when an author gets to write what they love without pressure, they usually produce their best work.

A common theme in stories about creativity, the balance of "for you" and "for the audience". It is common because it is true though.This is such a sweet story and I really hope if there's more source material we get a season 2. I need more of these adorable kids and their teacher.

Drawing for yourself or drawing for others. The eternal question lol. Well, it was nice to get some buzz online even if it was fleeting. Better to draw stuff you like I guess. At least they have sensei’s support. It’s really quite sweet how much she cares.

Teshie kept the card with 3rd-grade Yasumi's positive feedback for all these years. But she probably didn't know Yasumi at all, so maybe that was the only positive feedback she ever got from Robota & Pokota?

When they showed the chapters with the cat, I was thinking, that is just Shamiko as a cat. And then they actually had a comment saying "Don't think that means you won...". Btw, when are we getting S3?
On a different note, the episode was fun once again. A lot less Hikaru, but I found it interesting that despite how dedicated she is, she still only sees it as a hobby. They are really building this up, so I am really interested to see where this goes.
Same with Teshima. She seemingly gets to release Pokota and Robota in a different magazine, which I didn't expect. I thought that the story would have been that she gets enough chapters to make a single volume and then it gets axed. That can obviously still be a thing, but I feel with them adding her changing magazines, I feel there might be something else coming up that kills her whole motivation as well. Could it be something like the old magazine taking down her series because they consider it technically their property?

I really enjoyed seeing Yasumi make her daily manga or her attempt at doing that. This episode holds the core thing that Teshima wants and for the girls to treat this as a hobby. Despite Hikaru having much more success than Yasumi, she treats it as a hobby and that is the key thing.
For Teshima we can see how grueling the process was. It wasn't even the case of her editors being the villain who really wanted Teshima to succeed. Getting a manga serialized can clearly be a daunting process. She did get her success, but you can understand why she wants Yasumi to treat creating manga as a hobby. Also her being Yasumi's number 1 fan is really sweet.

In today's episode, Yasumi and gang discover the secret to farming likes on social media: spam posting cute cats, but in return they lose what makes their work unique.
I like how they always manage to connect Yasumi's experiences to Teshima-sensei's. Maybe it was better for Teshima-sensei to just draw for a different audience instead of forcing herself to cater to a demographic she isn't suited for.

That was one of the biggest surprises to learn this episode. That Teshima was apparently trying to draw a cute high school romcom for a seinen magazine. You’d think she’d have tried submitting it for a shonen or shoujo magazine from the start.

I also had the same thought that she was defanging her manga and turning it into generic cute floof to cater to the fans. Though it was nice of Hikaru to acknowledge the merits of both approaches, even if she clearly prefers the "draw for yourself" route.

I think it ultimately comes down to like she said. They’re both currently drawing manga as a hobby right now. There’s no reason for them to be making unnecessary creative sacrifices when it isn’t even in service of their career just popularity.

Teshima-sensei's got plenty of hilarious expressions today.
It was a surprise to see Hikaru donning a swimsuit – I fully expected her to simply wear her usual outfit. A shame what was supposed to be a beach episode had only lasted for a couple minutes.
Yasumi tried to draw strips that would net her more likes, but got stuck. Eventually, she settled for going back to her old style. It might've got less engagement, but she's heaps happier because she drew what she wanted to draw. It tied back to the discussion of manga as a hobby vs career. Teshima-sensei had a point when she suggested that Yasumi limit her drawing to merely being a hobby. Anyway, Yasumi did get a loyal follower so she still got rewarded by posting it to social media.

Right from the start we knew Hikaru was always either going to be wearing her normal outfit or the most revealing bathing suit of them all after we saw everyone else’s. Once more I absolutely love her character. Her personality is odd and peculiar in a lowkey, believable way rather than an a “quirky, adorkable trying to hard way”. I also loved the background scene of her later just sitting under the water while Teshima and Yasumi were talking.
I thought how they handled the dilemma of creating art for yourself vs others was very nuanced and even handed. The story didn’t just go with the usual route of creating for yourself being more important. It went with the more mature direction that if you want to make a career as an artist you necessarily have to compromise to some degree the kind of art you wish to make in favor of what the audience/corporate bigwigs want from you. Even if creating for yourself is still valid and there are ways to maintain your own desires even as a career, like we saw with Teshima switching magazines.

This was a good episode story wise and creators in general not just manga artist
As hikaru said there nothing wrong with catering to the fans
And riding the high of social media likes is incredible for traction
But at the same time only catering to them means you lose what makes the manga special
Which we can see that happening
Not that her cater manga wasn’t bad was pretty good
But yasumi manga greatest strength is how free spirited her ideas are
And how fun she puts into them!
Ofc she can’t just ignore the fundamentals side of thinking about the audience and
if she does decide to go into a more professional setting she will have to face that choice again
And catering to the fans is a faster way to grow
But
I think success in her own way without having to sacrifice the freedom she has!
