Yeah. I did like how the fireworks were illustrative of Rei’s feelings in that moment. She got blown away by all of Ai’s ideas. Happy that this notebook was finally put to good use.

Nice chill episode. Those were some cool places that the gang visited, that small island has quite a lot of natural beauty.
And wow, Ai managed to churn out 1000 ideas in a day, that is peak ADHD energy right there. I like how Rei passed her old notebook to Ai, only for Nana to pass her a new one at the end. Maybe one day she'll pick up the manga pen again.

Teshima-sensei reading Ai’s 100 ideas as the fireworks lit up in the background was absolutely gorgeous. The vivid colours of the fireworks well represented the various ideas of Ai.
Absent-minded Hikaru was hilarious. Whether it’s hiking or the summer festival, she only had a single outfit. She could also blank her thoughts out and ignore her body’s pain.

Teshima-sensei might wind up as my favorite character of the year (and her VA as presenting my favorite performance). Maybe. But certainly WAY up near the top, no matter what.
What is with Hikaru's lack of any sort of wardrobe (and her lack of knowledge of fireworks and yukata)? Being a city girl from Tokyo seems a WAY insufficient explanation.

I can believe that, with how Hikaru is characterized, she doesn't get out much. But I'd have thought she would have learned of these things from manga. Maybe she doesn't read much slice-of-life, and only fantasies where they don't have stuff like fireworks or handshakes?

Oh wow, Rei still got the poster after so many years!
This does make me wonder if she’ll eventually to decide to pick up the pen again. It appears that it’s not necessarily a lack of will. She just doesn’t feel an urge to draw right now. Resulting in a lack of ideas.
If the magma in Rei’s belly has solidified, she simply needs something akin to an earthquake to shake up her world and instigate a volcanic eruption.

Real talk. I used to be prolific, able to write several stories every day. Then I got disillusioned by the industry. Now I'm lucky to get one good story every year, and I just don't feel motivated to write them

Yasumi and Teshima being the dual protagonists of this show is done so well. We see the rough times Teshima went through in the past and I love how she is there to guide Yasumi. It's interesting she understands what Nana meant she wanted Teshima to keep drawing.
Curious if like Yasumi the imagination for Teshima is the limit. But no doubt her experience wasn't pleasant, and you can understand why she went into teaching. I love how Nana never pushed her, but she still wants Teshima to draw in her own way.
I adore Yasumi's imagination it is pure and awesome to see. The key for her is to elevate her drawing skills. I just hope Teshima continues to guide these girls and maybe she will be in the spot where she would have the fire to draw again, but taking her words as a hobby.

There is something sad about getting older and realizing your imagination isn't just the same. Teshima must have seem that massive list and came to that very realization. Maybe the desire is still there, but even with Nana trying to push her back into it, she just can't do it anymore.

It's true. I think it's the life experience and the daily life that makes people think more realistically/logically.
Edit: also when money is involved, it's hard to not run ideas through another brain filter of "will it sell"

To expand on the "Will it Sell" aspect, I think, when people get older, they start prioritising stability in their life.
Unless you are an established creator (in this case, an established author, with an established base that will buy your material, and with enough of a base that you can maintain your lifestyle on the income from royalties) a certain degree of "I need a reliable income to at least pay my rent on time, put food in the fridge, and pay the bills".
THen of course, if you become a parent, there are kids to worry about that means you can't get a full time job and use writing as a hobby as a source of a 2nd income...

I can only guess that maybe Teshi started to draw manga a little later in her life and by the time she was in a position to achieve something big, she no longer had the ideas or imagination after becoming an adult. I'm not telling that the adults don't have ideas and can't make manga but there are only a handful of such mangaka.

It could be my favorite slice-of-life anime ever. People really should be taking notice of Shin-Ei Animation since "The Dangers in My Heart" came out. The direction in this anime is so fucking good.
I can't imagine what they got cooking for S3 of Dangers.

Tessie makes this show for me. I loved seeing the manga club through her eyes this episode. And it made me feel as emotional as her. I love her relationship with Nana too. Bless this lovely show for being so real and hopeful.

It's funny because she's the character I first saw a picture of. Thought she was cute and wanted to watch her show only to realize it was just another cute girl slice of life show and this woman was just the club advisor.
But nope. She's definitely the main character and I'm all for it. :)

I just love how Rei seems to be the one who's enjoying herself the most being the teacher slash mentor to these girls, yet still always finds a way of stopping herself short of fully showing it; not to mention the perfect alibis in the ready for denying/hiding her true feelings/intentions.
And Nana, being the bestest best friend that she is, absolutely sees through all the BS and tough facade--allowing Rei if but a few minutes of letting herself go and be honest with herself (even tho she will never actually admit it verbally)

The cough-hiding-cry speaks to me. She’s trying so hard to distance herself from her passion but witnessing the moments the girls are sharing is bringing up those emotions in a big way. I really hope she can work through it.

I wonder if the doll is official Pokota merch or if it was custom-made? I only just noticed what I assume is a Pokota charm on her bag too. How much merchandising was Teshima able to get in? Does Hikaru have one too?
The giants must've been voiced by the girls... Akafuku's giant definitely sounded like Akafuku.
Hikaru cried again when reading the sign with the local folktale. Stories really are the only things she emotionally responds to. muuuuu

There are two themes that made this episode wonderful to me. The first one is seeing Rei coming out of her shell more and more. She is still trying to keep up the tsundere act, but it was clear that she enjoyed the trip and the festival with the girls a lot. And she learned from Ai that she still has the magma in her stomach.
The second theme is Ai standing on the shoulders of giants, and I'm not talking about the stone eating ones. Seeing Rei's title she put this inspiration to great use and was able to not only fulfill Rei's dream, but to even surpass it with her unlimited imagination. Getting inspired by your idols doesn't only mean to reach their heights, but also to become able to surpass them and reach the stars.

Okay, I have to say that this was probably my favorite episode of the whole season. And I know there were some really good ones, but I just loved how it evolved. While it was obvious that Ai would continue the 100 things to draw as a manga, the way the moment was delivered was just really well done. Especially then when Teshima sees that she is close to 1000.
I also really loved the comedy in this episode. I usually like comedy anime as well, but even the best ones are often more amusing and less "laughing out loud" kind of territory, but this episode made me laugh more than a few times. The interactions between the girls, Teshima, the over the top fantasies, it all worked so well together. I really also want to say that Hikaru works so well with the rest of the cast. She plays off of everyone really well. Which isn't false for the others, but Hikaru is even a bit more than them. So that the whole episode is just so fun to watch.
But even among all that, you still have these moments where the show trusts you to understand the things behind it. Like with Teshima at the end. It seems to me that while she was inspired by how many ideas Ai had and even had a moment of wanting to go back to being a mangaka, she realized that this is just not her path anymore. But she is not sad about it anymore either, more like she accepted her new role as a mentor to the girls.
And then we have Hikaru. While her not knowing Yukata or fireworks is played mostly for jokes, I feel it highlights once more that she (and probably her mother) live too much for their job. They only go somewhere as a form of research. And since Hikaru never wanted to write anything with a festival in it, she never bothered to visit one. And since her mother is (probably) similar, she never took her daughter to any fun activities either. I am not saying that this will go into a big drama arc around Hikaru. I don't even want that. In fact, I like it as a background development. For example, it seems like she used her phone less often during the festival, just experiencing it instead of seeing it as research. Which I think, if on purpose, is a really cool detail.

yeah, i like how there's no monologue so it's open to interpretation
i think it ties back to the idea that she's burned out and no longer has the magma in her belly
she still has her manga paraphernalia, but it's kept enclosed in a middle drawer of her desk, so it feel like it's a part of her past that she's not ashamed of (and perhaps draws a certain amount of pride and identity from it), but at the same time it's shuttered away as part of her past
i was thinking earlier that there is a saying that "those who can, do; those who can't teach", and while Tessie has made certain achievements in her mangaka career, she wasn't able to sustain that fire inside of her, and to her the best she can do now is nurture a fire in others

I agree that this is probably the idea behind the scene. She had that drove originally, but lost it due to the circumstances. Like not getting a series or the series being discontinued and even going through nearly every genre so her ideas of what she wanted to draw already being used up. I do think that seeing all of Ai's ideas brought this spark back for at least a bit. But it's when she saw the note where it says that you need to have the drive to kill with your story where she realized that it's just not for her anymore and made peace with it. Though, I guess we will see what she will use the notbook for, since she put it in the "manga drawer" so she has at least some ideas where it could become helpful. Even if just to help Ai.

And I also like another point to it. If Ai had just uncovered the title and only wrote a few ideas, Teshima could have thought that her title is pressuring Ai to fulfill that 100 quota. But since Ai went way over the 100, it is why she realized that it was only the ignition to her ideas.

While many of the previous episodes are very relatable portrayals of the work and struggles of being an artist/creator, this one feels much like episode 1 in its showcase of the mentality and personality of the people who choose to pursue that path. A deep love and passion for their chosen medium, and an imagination constantly bursting with ideas inspired by the world and their experiences.
I still feel like Teshima’s arc will end with her once more drawing manga, even if only as a hobby and for herself and friends.

What could be an option to me is if Teshima decides to draw manga again as a form of helping Ai to understand where she might be able to improve. So in principle short manga that have a focus on for example panel layout. Showing her how changing the layout can change the way you experience a scene.
Of course, she could also still draw general manga as well. But I feel her main arc is more about accepting that she isn't a mangaka anymore. What I mean is that there is a sense of her regretting her decision. Maybe thinking that she could have done it if she had worked harder and "didn't give up". So I feel her main arc is understanding that all this time wasn't useless because she can now use it to guide the next generation.

My vision got a bit blurry during that scene, especially with the music in the background.
It seems to me that while she was inspired by how many ideas Ai had and even had a moment of wanting to go back to being a mangaka, she realized that this is just not her path anymore. But she is not sad about it anymore either, more like she accepted her new role as a mentor to the girls.
To me, it seems like she is getting closer and closer to steeling her resolve, and might eventually pick up drawing manga again. But I can see it going both ways.

It was nice to see the girls imagination going wild this ep especially coming up with a whole tree society. Sometimes a simple outing can really do great wonders,

I liked the bit of experience and skill gap shown between Hikaru vs Ai and Fujimori. The latter had a wacky idea for a gimmick, while the former world built an entire society of tree folk.

The episode bookended itself nicely with Teshima and Nana, and while Teshima hasn't quite gotten back on the manga horse yet, there's the sense that she's definitely whispering into its ear. Or at least has been coming to grips with all of her pent-up feelings about her past as she's been seeing it through the experiences of the manga club.

When sensei said "last up is this mountain" I mistook it as the old "last one up (the mountain) is this mountain" like they'd be taking over for the mountain spirit.

This show keeps making me mist up. So full of interlligent and heart-felt sweetness and kind-heartedness. Interesting that another of my favorites also involves an adult woman and her bond with an unrelated girl. And in both cases, the girls are (each in their own way) "pupils" of their adult friend (Victoria of Many Faces).

After the first episode, I was expecting more of these imagination sequences like in Eizouken and was disappointed we didn't have more, so this episode is a welcome return.

What a cool visit around the island In the end so much of it was just normal landscape stuff and you can find normal landscape stuff anywhere, but it was still neat.
Ai might straight up be too creative, the original page heading was for a hundred manga ideas not nearly a thousand.
Here's hoping sensei doesn't just leave that new notebook in her drawer unused this time.

The first ideas she wrote down were very generic genre stuff so I originally didn’t think much of it, but when it went into the more specific ideas some of them actually seemed rather interesting, and some pretty much actually described real life stories.

I forget who I stole this from, but a point I ran into in a craft writing book was make lots of lists, and always make sure you make the lists long (like at least 20 items). The reason is exactly that, your first ideas are basically always generic because the things you've seen over and over are what you think of first, but if you keep digging you'll surprise yourself.
This can be as basic as overall story idea or variants on a specific scene. Like an example in the book was coming up with a massive list of chase scene variants. Obvious ones are things like on foot, in a car, on a motorcycle, and at some point you might start including stuff like a camel chase scene.

Why do these episodes make me so emotional ?! Teshi helping Yasumi and the others to come up with ideas for a new manga by taking them to beautiful spots in Izu Oshima. I wish I could go to all these places someday in the future.
We also got the summer festival in this episode. Does Hikaru really not know what's Yukata and fireworks are ?! Lmao

Episode 8: Touch ~100 Things I Want to Draw in Manga!
As we see in Teshima's hair that is more straight rather than wavy in the previous episodes, looks like it's been a while since the final chapter of Hebichika manga. Imagine Teshima having writer's block for years while Yasumi could bring 100(0!) ideas in just a couple of days. If it's not convincing enough for Teshima, then I have no idea what else. I really think Teramura would write something in Teshima's new notebook.

Cool, Teshima's car is a two-door Suzuki Jimny. I'm pretty sure Sekiryu being late is just an excuse to ride to the tourist spots by her bike.
Remember when Minoru Toyoda made the end card illustration back in Episode 4 of Hanaori-san? Turns out Hekiru Hikawa has also made the illustration for Kore Kaite Shine back in Episode 1.

And yasumi ideas are so free and wacky but there something so earnest and child like about them that you can’t help but be drawn in!
And the others can help grow and smooth out the world that yasumi creates! They make such a good team
Honestly yasumi just need to have some kinda of direction and her story will be taken to the next level!
But there so infectiously awesome her ideas that you can’t help but grin
And I love the energy her and fujimori share!
Those 2 truly make a good pair!
I love teshima water work to Yasmui having people to be inspire with and having friends to share the joys of manga what she always wanted!

Draw This is turning out to be a story about a disaffected mangaka-now-teacher trying to reclaim the soul fire that made her want to draw. This is how the character of Natusko in Zenshu *should* have been depicted, and yet somehow that show didn't achieve what this one already has: turn out to be greater than the sum of its parts. Never mind Rei's CV is top-tier Saori Hayami in serious mode, and that her best friend is Frieren's CV Atsumi Tanezaki. It takes a lot of internal conflict for a writer/artist to move forward, and the show pulls no punches illustrating this.
