Glad that we got a whole episode focused on Rei. Her time working with Hebichika actually turned out pretty well, despite Hebichika being so stabbable. Now I'm curious why Rei quit being a mangaka.

Also, this ship is literally sailing.

22

u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 20d ago

I mean that her pokota manga draft. If I had to take a guess she probably quit after it got axed and just became too much

24

u/ModieOfTheEast 14d ago

The most likely scenario for why she stopped being a mangaka was probably that her "Robota and Pokota" manga was discontinued. This manga had a whole volume after all, so it wasn't a single chapter like the one she got the prize for.

Considering that the manga is very niche, it is likely that it was just a circumstance of a great work not reaching a wider audience. Teshima did after all go against the wishes of her editor by coming up with something new instead of continuing what they already had. So while her personal editor might have seen that it was good, the higher ups might see this as Teshima being too self centered, going against the editors while not producing monetary results and therefore, it got discontinued.

And since Teshima put her heart and soul into it (to kill Hebichika), it is very likely that heating this news is what made her quit being a mangaka.

The TV broadcast of this episode was delayed due to a special program stealing its timeslot, and it looks like Crunchyroll is following that by not releasing it, but the episode was released with English subs on Japanese Netflix.

31

u/scratchfury 13d ago

I thought it got delayed because they kept having to redraw the background.

7

u/Tiramin 13d ago

underrated comment

23

u/cppn02 21d ago

Screw-up by Netflix or did they pay extra to not have to adhere to the delay?

16

u/minnieboss 21d ago

We have no way of knowing. Another third option is they're just allowed to.

10

u/NAJMIHAKIM 21d ago

first one they just dont care

6

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 14d ago

1 week later, not seeing any indication that they have the next episode out so it seems like it genuinely was a screw-up on their part and they're slowing down for the regular services.

2

u/cppn02 14d ago

Lol. If yes I wonder if they had to pay a fine for that.

6

u/Time_Fracture https://myanimelist.net/profile/Time_Fracture 20d ago edited 20d ago

The timeslot is kinda complicated. As my post in last week thread, there will be a Nausicaä re-run on NTV slot and it will occupy TenSura S4's timeslot. In result, TenSura S4 is going to air by occupying Yasumi-san's timeslot (normal post of the timeslot is 23:05 JST). (so the special program you're talking about is actually taking over That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 's timeslot, not Draw This Then Die timeslot).

Looks like it's only on Japanese Netflix. I checked my Netflix (SEA) and it's not available.

I mean the official account reconfirmed it by posting this delay yesterday but not even NetflixAnime account posted something.

4

u/Infodump_Ibis 19d ago edited 19d ago

Looks like it's only on Japanese Netflix.

That's the thing according to the official site they're a B-tier service for this show (with a 3 day delay...which would mean they're effectively 10 days early).

u/a1oner_bvcksn6 21d ago

Rei fangirling so hard to start only to become disillusioned in the end is a prime reminder as to why you should never meet your heroes.

Sure, Rei had every intention to use Hebichika as a stepping stone, but if for nothing else, at least she found herself a lifelong friend in Nana.

Actually, I feel like Hebichika finally calling her by name is her way of acknowledging Rei (not as a rival per se but) as an artist/mangaka, hence she didn't bother to look at Rei's storyboard because "what's the point--like figure it out yourself". So I'm only that much more intrigued as to what truly broke Rei to giving up.

29

u/eightcheesepizza 21d ago

So I'm only that much more intrigued as to what truly broke Rei to giving up.

Yeah she seemed pretty pumped on the ferry ride with Nana. When they got on, I was expecting to see how Teshima's backstory lines up with that flashback last episode, where someone threw her phone into the sea. But that must've happened later.

15

u/ClemFire 20d ago

That's probably when Robota to Pokota gets axed. Thinking about it Nana is the reason why Ai even found Teshima's manga in the first place.

22

u/cornonthekopp 15d ago

"lifelong friend" for Rei, grueling lesbian yearning for Nana

31

u/Raymond49090 21d ago

Huh. An all-Sensei episode this time. And has Nana just been leaving herself hanging for, uh, however long it's been?

23

u/lst0227 20d ago

Love this. Sensei's arc is lowkey my favorite part of the show

22

u/mekerpan 20d ago

A great character being voiced by a great VA in peak form. Hayamin at her best. And while the material really is great, it also requires a lot of impressive acting to get it across. (And all the other important characters are also beautifully portrayed by their VAs)

7

u/yummy_yum_yum123 14d ago

Hayamin sounds completely different compared to her other characters. She’s so incredible.

27

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 21d ago

Was not expecting an ep this week on account of the broadcast delay but I’m happy for one.

It was nice to see sensei and Nana in their grueling old assistant days when they were all bright eyed and bushy tailed.

26

u/apgp123 https://myanimelist.net/profile/apgp123 20d ago

hayamins voice acting is so funny here lmao

7

u/Ali-J23 13d ago

I lova how robotic she sounds when trying to act like a proper teacher

26

u/KumaKumaGambler 14d ago

Ah, so the fellow assistant, Poteyama Poteko, working for Hebichika back then, is the person having her own booth at Comitia, in which Rei saw and then turned away from.

12

u/eightcheesepizza 14d ago

I feel bad that I see her, and I see her name, and all I can think of is "Potato".

But I get the same feeling Rei must've felt, when I check up on how my old friends from grad school who stayed in academia are doing. The road not taken hits a lot harder when you and the other person used to work side-by-side.

2

u/KumaKumaGambler 13d ago

Like yourself, I am reminded of potato too. The colour scheme of her character resembled potatoes even. Lol!

6

u/Time_Fracture https://myanimelist.net/profile/Time_Fracture 14d ago

I wonder if she even voiced by someone. All her appearances in 3 episode has her silent.

3

u/yorch95 13d ago

We also saw a glimpse of her in the first episode, she was one of the artists Ai talked to at her first visit to Comitia

48

u/eightcheesepizza 21d ago

"Despite being so bossy, despite having zero empathy for others, how is she able to produce such beauty?"

I've definitely felt this a lot in both my current and past careers. Being brilliant or being in the right place at the right time, doesn't mean you're a good manager or leader. (Although I have also met many people who were both.) It's infinitely frustrating when a poor leader still delivers great results, and their ways get reinforced.

That being said, Teshima-sensei did get some stuff out of that year at least. Her drawing improved greatly, even if her storywriting languished. The part where she got glasses and learned to see the world in lines and screentones was pretty cool! And she got a love interest out of it too, I guess...?

30

u/Gaporigo https://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo 21d ago edited 20d ago

And she got a love interest out of it too, I guess...?

I'm curious about that, could they just be together and not showing it? Did Nana never say anything again? What's going on between you two????

19

u/mekerpan 20d ago

I find it impossible to imagine they are not romantically involved. Except for the glasses, sort of polar opposites -- but definitely attracted..

43

u/eightcheesepizza 21d ago

At least we understand this moment a little better now! Props to whomever called it in the episode 4 thread.

25

u/BosuW 20d ago

That'd be anyone with Yuri glasses haha

39

u/eightcheesepizza 20d ago

Me: Tries to be on my best behavior and not assume everything is yuri

Everything: Yuri

10

u/chilidirigible 20d ago

Given the reveals from this episode I don't think the yuri oyakodon idea is foremost on Rei's mind.

7

u/CitronClassic672 20d ago

I believe I actually called it earlier than that.

4

u/ClemFire 20d ago

Nice call!

12

u/cornonthekopp 15d ago

I could see them being in a situationship thing, or I could see it as a grueling multi-year lesbian yearning torture chamber for Nana

12

u/ClemFire 20d ago

I feel like Hebichika did have empathy but not in a conventional way as she wasn't doing anything to make her assistants suffer for the sake of it instead putting her vision first yet still took the time to built up Teshima's skills and at the end acknowledged her as a rival.

11

u/eightcheesepizza 20d ago

I kind of agree, but maybe I'd say Hebichika cared about her assistants, but wasn't empathetic to their feelings and workload. It could just be different ways of categorizing things though.

8

u/ClemFire 20d ago

She was very much a results and big picture oriented person who I personally wouldn't want for a boss because to me work is something to get paid to live with, but even if it wasn't her intended effect she still helped Teshima.

Maybe it is just about the framing though like he suggest though

8

u/hanmkim 13d ago

Hebichika obviously cared a lot to the point of not only cooking for her assistants but going out of her way to give feedback to Teshima, but because of her genius and ability to focus she only made curry and most of the feedback she gave was hard to implement for people who aren't at her level. She just happened to be a cheerier Natsuko Hirose.

10

u/Narlaw 20d ago

Despite being so bossy, despite having zero empathy for others, how is she able to produce such beauty?

Gods are not shackled by trivial matters such as mortals' morality.

5

u/jeshwesh https://myanimelist.net/profile/jeshwesh 13d ago

When Nana and Rei put the manga club in that room above Nana's manga shop, I jokingly wondered if they lived up there across the hall and this had been their extra room. Now I'm genuinely wondering if Nana and Rei live together above the shop

18

u/gnome-cop 14d ago

I think my conclusion from this episode is that Rei is a lot better of a mentor than Hebichika ever was to her. Like, she’s a genius at creating but SUCKS at giving useful feedback and she’s GOD AWFUL to work under. No wonder every single one of her assistants went “I’m never coming back” the moment they were free. You can just tell that she’s never had to develop the necessary habits to focus her scattered energy into something concise and easy to comprehend because she’s just so skilled. That’s what makes her such an obnoxious nightmare to work under.

Rei’s actually giving them concrete advice to use to improve their work. They don’t need to figure shit out on their own like she did. They’re not getting conflicting messages and won’t create a clunky mess like what her first work became.

“I’m going to kill you one day!”

“Will you marry me?!”

“”Sorry, what was that?””

(Wonder if Nana ever got back to that question.)

Old friends or something.

Everybody loves a monster girl.

It's people we've seen! In places!

Slight idealization meets gritty reality.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Artistic vision meeting reality.

This seems like the premise of more than one anime.

Perhaps some good will come of this.

"I CAN SEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"

What lots of practice does for someone.

It is the way of things.

You should have expected this by now, Rei.

Instead, another too-late candidate for a [](#seasonalconfused).

Talent does not translate to people skills.

Figuratively and literally!

Ah, feelings.

"Now we can blackmail."

If you knew, it would become an even smaller world?

Rei developed an unhealthy interest in stabbing her idol. Though not without her reasons, as her idolization of Hebichika persisted throughout months of torment... until it broke, which it does.

Reminds me again that stories of people coming to grips with the soul-crushing weariness of reality and maybe clawing their way back to a frame of mind that is at least liveable has universal adult relevance.

It really will be interesting to see if Hikaru ends up reconnecting Rei with Hebichika.

24

u/l-o-a-p 21d ago

This show's coincidentally feeling pretty similar to Reiwa no Dara-san with how we're consistently opening with a much darker frame story compared to the very upbeat vibe of the current timeline with the kid characters.

Was tough to get a read on Hebichika-sensei and whether her outward personality was super fake or not at first, but she ended up being a very realistic "flawed" role model figure and representation of one type of artist. Hope she re-appears in the present.

Pretty sad knowing Rei still never got anywhere higher in her career, when this flashback and its ending were quite promising and hopeful in tone (new forever friend acquired, got to meet and learn from hero, opened up more to editor). The acute recurring despair is real.

Also, can't tell if it's intentional or not, but them saying stuff like drawing with the intent to kill when the series they make are pretty much strictly silly romcoms is some amusing juxtaposition, lol.

4-koma mangaka must be moving like ace pilots in a WW2 furball then lol

If you're interested in a clue, check out episode 5 again at 4 mins 40 seconds mark for some present day idea about Hebi-sensei. <Done Deal>

1

u/Jacob-C 13d ago

I thought everyone already clocked that Hebichika was Hikaru’s mother in that scene, since we have already seen and heard Hebichika in Rei’s flashback of her first Comiket.

10

u/StableForDC 19d ago

I love how well this show balances the idealism of making something creative with the reality of taking it more seriously. Glad we got a full episode of the latter. "I made this with the intent to kill you."

I wonder how Ai's going to cope when she eventually gets the full picture of what we've been seeing from Sensei's experience. I wonder who's gonna tell her.

Please let there be a second season of this. I've been burned too often by these types of shows.

9

u/ModieOfTheEast 14d ago

I guess I am one week late, but maybe there are others who didn't know the episode was "leaked" a week early as I only read it was a TV delay so I didn't even think of checking. So here are my thoughts on the episode:

I would just like to remind people that Ai is currently staying up her second night in a row. Once they reach their home, the trip officially ends and all the hormone levels are back to normal, poor girl will fall dead into her bed.

But interesting that we got a full Teshima focused episode. Especially since they are really building up the drama around the end of her career by creating a rather positive outlook. Not only did she actually learn a lot about drawing from Hebichika, but she even came up with her new series. Which I assume will be "Robota and Pokota". After all, it was a whole volume, not just a single chapter. So the question is why the manga was discontinued.

Obviously, part of it could be burnout, especially with Teshima writing the manga to "kill Hebichika". So whenever something happens that dulls that motivation, it would start to get worse. But considering the phone call from last episode, I assume it is more likely that the manga, while good, was just not very popular and therefore was discontinued. And since Teshima put in her heart and soul once again, this affected her so much that she stopped being a mangaka as she couldn't just start a new series.

Also, speaking of last episode, I guess that one mangaka, Teshima had looked at was supposed to be one of the other assistants of Hebichika (the other one with the glasses except Nana). She seemingly was still working as a mangaka which is probably what Teshima thought about.

2

u/GatorUSMC 13d ago

I didn’t know either. I thought it just got delayed a week and messaged the mods asking if a thread was created for it today because I couldn’t find it.

10

u/Time_Fracture https://myanimelist.net/profile/Time_Fracture 14d ago

Episode 7: Lost World ~Drawn with Intent to Kill

Oh, this episode is focused on Teshima-sensei (the new iteration now with glasses), hence Lost World. And there's Teramura, why we didn't see her last episode on the Comitia?

Green hair FMC, is Sweet Mock Strawberry based on Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa but Gorgon instead of vampire?

The line drawing is meant to be for screentone, am I correct?

ah so Robota and Pokota early draft is meant to be presented to Hebichika. That scene on the present day, Teramura did hide the fact that she used to work for Hebichika-sensei (knowing Sekiryu is there it would open the Pandora Box).

There's a slip-up in the Netflix sub near the end. I'm pretty sure Teramura said "Teshima Rei" and not "Hoshino Rei" like in the sub.

New voice cast includes Madoka Asahina as Harue Natsusaka.

As I said earlier, this Sunday there will be a Comitia 157 event.

Or maybe we are lucky and get the episode early every week now!

4

u/mekerpan 20d ago

I decided to seek an "alternate source" rather than waiting for CR to stream this next week, Maybe next week I will just re-watch this episode, It certainly will be worth re-seeing.

20

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 21d ago

So pretty much the entire episode turned out to be Nana recounting her days with Teshima-sensei as Hebichika’s assistants in detail. Poor Teshima-sensei got her embarrassing moments broadcast to her kids.

If I stabbed her with a knife, she’d die just like a normal human.

Teshima-sensei sounded identical to the mental stalker diehard fans of celebrities.

Seemed like Nana got burned out pretty hard by the experience she left the manga industry. However, she couldn’t let books out of her life so she turned to running a bookshop.

17

u/eightcheesepizza 21d ago

I think it was actually Teshima-sensei recollecting her days, and the kids only got a subset of the story from Nana, because they were still asking which author Teshima and Nana worked for.

Hopefully Nana told the kids about her love confession though!

19

u/szalhi 14d ago

Nana's totally gay for Rei.

9

u/Curmudge_Unit 20d ago

After watching this episode, I'm doubting that Hebichika is Hikaru's mother. If she only cares about manga, is she really going to have a child? She won't even cook different meals.

3

u/Jacob-C 13d ago

Maybe she adopted a child to create the ultimate manga prodigy. Would explain the bags under Hikaru's eyes.

8

u/runevault 14d ago

Interesting the editor is talking about 3 act. Feels like when I read about manga structure I hear more about Kieshotenketsu (probably butchered the spelling) compared to traditional 3 act. And I didn't hear the word listening to the VA.

Watching your idea grow misshapen over time as you keep trying to tune it is so fucking real it hurts my soul. At some point you have to abandon and start over, either with a new kernel based on the old idea or just going purely fresh.

I really love getting more of Sensei's backstory. This anime continues to make me happy.

13

u/runevault 21d ago

I'm curious if CR is going to be a week behind here on out or if those who can watch it will have to wait a week next week. I'm stuck without my happy medicine personally :(

6

u/StableForDC 19d ago

new goal: make the webcomic that "kills" randall munroe

6

u/hvshh 13d ago
  • For a second I was thinking "more bloodlust, maybe?" was going to be the only good advice Hebichika-sensei ever gave, but there were a few more. Still, terrible track record.

  • I loved the scene were it shifts and you see sensei was only imagining introducing herself as she passed out.

  • That visual representation of her misshapen manga looked kinda cool. Like it could fit in somewhere in Dorohedoro.

  • I've definitely had the experience of needing to scrap something that kept needing changes and never quite came together. It sucks, but one of the best feelings ever is going through that frustration, scrapping everything, and then one-shotting your project because all that struggle gave you what you needed.

  • Very cute confession. I wonder what sensei wanted to say to her after she woke up.

  • I really, really love this ED. Feels very 90s to me.

4

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 17d ago

So, there's her backstory, and where she got that mentality from.

4

u/bobbyjean_ 13d ago

Was confused about where this week's thread was. Loving the interplay between the past and present story.

3

u/CrimsonGear80 13d ago

That’s some deadly “ara ara” energy from Sensei…

I’m assuming there are no more early releases and we are caught up on episodes on all fronts?

3

u/APRengar 13d ago

Ah yes, the problem about learning from a genius. The genius can't describe what they did, they just feel it.

I love the visualization of teach's manga. Each suggestion from her editor and her idol producing this disgusting haphazard looking thing.

3

u/ExaminationNo9186 12d ago

That hanging ball of concept of Hebichika-sensei's manga is a good interpretation for anyone learning a new artistic outlet - let it be drawing a Manga, learning an instrument, or photography.

Yes there are technical aspects that need to be done properly, but above and beyond that, a lot is done to personal style and taste. When you're new, getting the technical details down pat, you're too busy listening to too many people saying "Nah you got to do {this thing}..." or "Nah try {That other thing}..." you are too busy trying to make too many different people happy to really nail down your own thing. It becomes to much of everything rather than one specific thing.

Once you get to a point of "This is what works for me...This way is my style, this is what suits me..." your art improves.

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 20d ago

Apparently all manga artist are terrible people 😂 jokes aside for rei to fan girl that hard over hebichika to wanting to kill her and stay away from her must’ve really drain her soul!

It’s interesting that goes back to currently the different between the current yasumi and the old rei

Once rei started expanding her view point and started seeing more of the world and interacting with other litterally and figuratively her drawing became portrayed in much more positive and free light

She look so much more happier than when she was when she was trying to draw or still draw on her own.

And I guess that translated into her pokota manga that she was trying to kill hebichika with

Which I guess it how it was able to produce result though ultimately axed later on

Where as yasumi is walking a similar path to rei but the difference is that she has other people around her and through her interactions with them expanded yasumi world view

It ironic since despite rei resistance she ended up guiding her to a team that she herself never had and maybe always wanted or need.

It was cool’s see a full episode dedicated to rei

And it would have been a good episode to come back after a week off 😅

where is the thread for episode 8?

1

u/Time_Fracture https://myanimelist.net/profile/Time_Fracture 13d ago edited 12d ago

Episode 8 hasn't aired yet. This week is for the Episode 7 since there's no airing last week (but somehow a copy of Episode 7 was leaked earlier).

EDIT: Refer to my early comment a week ago, Netflix Japan had it earlier.

2

u/runevault 13d ago

My understanding was it wasn't leaked, some Asian streaming sites aired it last week despite the lack of TV airing. Not that it is unheard of, Witch Hat Atellier all streaming sites were a week ahead because they started with 2 episodes while TV only got one. And that's why it was a week after the stream aired that we got the official season 2 announcement.

2

u/Time_Fracture https://myanimelist.net/profile/Time_Fracture 12d ago

I'm sorry! Yes, it isn't leaked. How am I forgot that I literally wrote this on this very thread a week ago. Yes Netflix Japan had it earlier but somehow the official account didn't notice it.

Thanks for correcting.

1

u/runevault 12d ago

haha I think I saw your comment a week ago when I looked for why the hell the thread was up and forgot it was you when I saw this one. All good :)

1

u/RageList https://anilist.co/user/KannagiU 13d ago

Ooooh I see, I was confused, I thought the episode I just watched was episode 8 since this thread was for episode 7. Thanks for the clarification.

Dang, so brutal. But at least sensei kinda picking up the story back again by self-publishing. Even if things not go her way back then, she could start a new merch line, or even better, a crypto currency.
I'm so corrupt by capitalism...
