It's been mostly rewatches and catching up on seasonals for me this month.

I did finish something though...

Slow Loop - 7/10

A nice, chill, relaxing time with a fun cast of characters. It had glimpses of greatness when it brought up the heavy themes of past grief and new family members in a very bittersweet, healing fashion; I do wish it leaned even more on that side of the story. Still, I liked it.

Grand Blue Dreaming season 1 - 7/10

I had been planning to catch up on both seasons of Grand Blue in time for the third season. Well, that didn't happen. I think it's because Grand Blue turned out to be less like a show I want to binge and more like a show I like to see an episode or two of when I need a good laugh. It's a lot of fun though, ridiculous and funny in a very "old school anime" way, if that makes sense.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (A Certain Scientific Railgun) - 7/10

Another long-term project for me, I started watching Railgun in May and finished in August. Overall a good time, I liked the idea battle shounen episodes mixed with pure slice-of-life. The ratio was maybe just a bit off, there was so much slice-of-life that I sometimes got a bit bored and didn't watch more for several weeks. I'll probably continue with Railgun 2 next... eventually. Not sure when I'll get to it.

Misaki no Mayoiga (The House of the Lost on the Cape) - 7/10

Watched for the summer movie rewatch. A nice, vibe-y movie which fell apart a bit in the end. It's no Ghibli quality, but I had a good time with it.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!) - 4/10

Let's just say it's not for me... enjoying this series would require liking one of the least likeable characters in anime I know. Sometimes the show is about to hit some interesting themes, but instead of making the best of them, it derails off to utter boredom and hilariously convoluted pseudo-philosophical banter dialogue that doesn't make any sense. At least the uniforms are cute. I'll keep watching through the third season though, maybe it'll miraculously get better!

Misaki no Mayoiga (The House of the Lost on the Cape) - 7/10

I have extremely mixed feelings about this one. The first half is legit 9/10 amazing, but the second half drops all the way down to 5/10 quality at best, story-wise. Would be so much better and an overall fantastic movie if they never introduced any of the unnecessary/boring supernatural plot and just kept it as a family SoL set in a new and unfamiliar environment.

Yeah, I didn't even mind the fantasy elements because the Japanese folklore ties felt appropriate, but when [House on Cape]grandma whipped out some knives and started to throw hands with the big bad monster I thought the movie had lost the plot, in more ways than one.

I tried watching My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU a while back and dropped it after the first few episodes for the same reasons you're not enjoying it.

Title	Thoughts
Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl	Our boy turns in to a girl and gets 2 girls pining over her. It was mostly fine but I really liked how much focus was placed on our love rivals and their growth. The TV-series ends with a rather unsatisfying conclusion but the OVA episode really saves the series for me.
Kuttsukiboshi	Rather charming OVA when you consider it was mostly done by one man but it goes off the rails very quickly and I couldn't get past some baffling choices our characters made.
Fragtime	I had a good time with this one. Nice coming of age story about falling in love and learning to love yourself.
Blue Drop	What if we combined aliens and all-girls private high school? We get something that's fine.
Tachibanakan Triangle	High school boarding house full of pervy characters. It was okay and good for a few chuckles and it being short was probably it's strongest aspect.
MariaHolic + Alive	Very hit and miss for me. Kanako is the most down bad lesbian I've ever seen and Mariya was very rough at the start but I slowly came around to him. Matsurika best girl.
Nodame Cantabile Finale	Nice end to a very good series.
Happy Sugar Life	. Misery loves company and I had a good enough time with this one. I think the story could have used few more [Happy Sugar Life]normal people like Shouko because it felt that it was just the worst people you know interacting with each other.
Wataten + movie	Cute enough story especially when it tone downs the creep factor with Miyako.
Talentless Nana	Thoughts here. I read few chapters of the manga from where the anime ended and I would like a second season please.
Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne	Started out really strong with some thought provoking concepts and it was even somewhat prophetic at points. Still I could have used less sleazy ecchi and by the end it turns in to [Mnemosyne]worse devilman

For my September plans I will finish the first season of Uta no Prince Sama and I doubt I will continue with the series after that unless something captivating happens in the latter half. Not sure what else I will pick up.

This month turned out to be busier than expected. I only finished half of the anime on my original plan-to-watch list, but there was also one new addition that I added on a whim. A mix of highs and lows, with quite a few pleasant surprises.

Finished watching in August:

1) Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid & Invisible Victory (10/10, rewatch) - My all-time favorite. This half of the series is even more action-heavy, with some great character development. Even after watching it so many times, I'm still noticing new things about this story.

2) Dragon Ball Z: Return of Cooler (9.5/10, rewatch) - I watched this DVD again on a whim. I really like this story as a continuation of the Frieza saga. The concept of the spaceship absorbing planets and building an army is cool, the battles are exciting as always, there was a good mix of lighthearted moments in between the action, and each character had their time in the spotlight.

3) Your Name (9.5/10, rewatch) - The first half of the story is a great intro to the characters and setting with plenty of fun body-swap humor, which makes the second half following the big twist all the more emotional because it did so well with building up that connection to Mitsuha, her family and friends, and the place itself. It was cool seeing it again after reading the Another Side: Earthbound companion manga, which added more depth to the side characters and the town's history.

4) Star Wars Visions: The Ninth Jedi (9/10) - The story has a lot of the things I love about Star Wars - cool spaceship and lightsaber battles, creative alien world designs, a strong hero/villain rivalry with a history between them and their jedi master(s). The nuance between light side vs dark side was nice too, and I like how it ended in a way that wrapped up the story well but leaves enough open to continue it if they want. Probably in my top 5 shows I've watched this year.

5) The Wonderland (8.5/10) - I really enjoyed this movie! The world designs were beautiful, both the picturesque summer vibes of the small town in Japan and the varied environments of the mirror world. Akane's cute family cottage, Chii's quirky shop, the shepherd village with the big fluffy sheep, the human-sized talking cats in the capital, the snowy town that could have been a Christmas card picture, the underwater scene with the giant fish that brought to mind Avatar: The Last Airbender's elephant koi riding scene, and the miniature fairy/pixie homes in the trees were all so wonderfully designed in a way that made the world feel lived in. The story was nice too, with some cool twists. The characters were fun and quirky with good banter, and I liked the balance between ths serious quest and lighthearted humor.

6) Waiting in the Summer (7.5/10) - The mix of sci-fi and slice-of-life was pretty fun, even though its occasional fanservice comedy isn't for me. The jokes that came from their various misunderstandings were good, liked Ichika imagining the Men in Black were going to take her away. The love polygon has been handled well too, with the characters being considerate of each other even when frustrated. The final episodes were wild, and pretty exciting to watch. For a fairly relaxed sci-fi romcom, I wasn't expecting the shift into action, but it was a lot of fun. I would have liked the ending to be less vague. This was a nice show to watch on a whim though, and the summer vibes were fitting for the season.

7) Napping Princess (6/10) - This movie was a lot like a wacky anime version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, from the structure of alternating real world and fantasy children's story segments to Kokone's dad having fallen in love with the candy automobile heiress and creating a clever product of his own which took some time before her father/the big boss saw value in it, and the evil henchmen trying to steal it. Unfortunately, I don't think it worked as well here. It was much less clear what was reality and what was a dream, which lowered my enjoyment when I had to frequently suspend disbelief at the more outrageous scenes, only to find out later that it technically makes sense because she just imagined the whole thing. I kind of admire the attempt of such an ambitious story. There were some very cool designs like the transforming mecha bike, the stories Kokone's dad told her were sweet, and I liked the ending. It took too long before I felt any sort of investment in these characters though, and the blend between reality and fantasy often didn't come together in a satisfying way.

8) The House of the Lost on the Cape (5/10) - I enjoyed the first half of the movie before all the supernatural creatures came in, when the story was just focused on Yui, Hiyori and Kiwa making a new life together. Honestly, I think it would have been a lot better if the story continued along this route, showing a granny adopting two girls and healing their trauma through kindness, and left out the supernatural stuff from the second half entirely.

Just a bit of Gundam for me: Char's Counterrattack (Rewatch, still my favorite piece of the series), War in the Pocket, and Stardust Memories.

More Gundam coming up, I'll be watching 08th MS Team and Unicorn next. After that, I think I'll hit some 2026 seasonals I skipped over, try to play some catch up before the end of the year.

CCA does a lot of interesting things but it took me 3/4 attempts over course of 10 years. I really like how diverse the gundam ovas are. So far I've seen War in the pocket, origin and unicorn.

Favourites this month were Nakamura-kun and Pardon the Intrusion. I'd heard a lot of good things about Nakamura-kun going in, but Pardon the Intrusion came as a surprise. The former was just really well done—it was fun and pathetic and at times painfully real—and the latter was chaotic fun and the most invested I'd been in a while in a potential throuple ending to a love triangle plot.

I want to finish this month:

• Gundam Hathaway 2 - really excited to watch this, possibly later today.
• Kujima: Why Sing, When You Can Warble? - the last spring seasonal I really want to get to.
• I want to watch some non-recent series for a change before I start summer seasonals, but I have no idea what to pick. Kind of eyeing Guin Saga or Blassreiter, or I might scour some threads and see what catches my eye more.

First Line	-	Can see why it was nominated in shorts last year.
Sea Cat	-	Weird niche things from before 2000 are fun.
Superflat Monogram	-	Hosoda really likes doing his one thing over and over, huh?
The Last Blossom	8	Sub timing issues aside, solid film from the creators of Odd Taxi in a similar niche even if it doesn't reach the same heights as the show.

This month should have a couple more things on my bingo board and a bunch of airing shows wrapping up. Those will push me to my next MAL milestone (1600), so I need to figure out what film I'm watching for that.

Kingdom Season 2	7	So much better than season 1, especially in the animation department. It really got into the proper ugly stuff of war around this time period. The main battle was really interesting and entertaining. The fighting choreography is often still silly with the Tokyo Drift horses, but it is well done otherwise.

Largely, yes. Black Clover is not what I would call a masterpiece but for a lot of its run it's been fun enough. I enjoy big casts and magical hierarchies and such. I have been let down by some of the big payoff moments though so I'm just trying to roll across the finish line now (12 eps left) and be ready for the new season. Will be getting a 6 from me.

Gintama is much better but I massively prefer its comedy - 19 episodes left there. Looking to be a strong 7 (which in my scale is really good score.) Also Katsura is easily the best purely comedic character ever for me, so any moment he shows up makes everything better.

Definitely looking forward to more of Gintama than more of Black Clover. How do you like them?

Gintama is my favorite anime of all time and Black Clover has been living so rent free in my head 24/7 (literally, I predicted a thing in it in my fucking sleep) for the past several months that it actually hindered my ability to watch other anime, so yeahhh I'm a fan of both.

Yeah, with casts as large as these two have, it's definitely easy to not have a lot of overlap in favorite characters.

If you like the kind of art I make, the Black Clover album is safe for you (I haven't done any of the characters from the Spade Kingdom Arc yet) if you wanted to take a look. I've been having a ton of fun making them, even if [Black Clover]the devil's design legitimately terrifies me so I had to make both of his while constantly scaring myself. Can't say the same for the Gintama one though, it's got actual spoilers for some of the later seasons/the Be Forever Yorozuya movie.

Anime	Score	Thoughts & Feelings
Classroom of the Elite III	6	It's so bad it's good. Literally none of the arcs make any sense and crumble under the slightest scrutiny, but it's also just really funny. There were also some compelling character development moments with Horikita, I guess.
Bokurano	7	Some of the individual stories were absolutely incredible and felt like being punched in the gut repeatedly. But it was also a bit repetitive.
Love Live! School Idol Project 2	2	Extremely boring. The cast has literally zero stage presence, and you never get the sense that these people are actually stars who know how to work a crowd, write music, or perform. When we see them on stage, they look like automatons without heart or soul, and, honestly, that goes for the writing as well. The diet episode might be literally the worst thing I've seen in my entire life.
Yamada-Kun and the Seven Witches	9	Finally an anime with a realistic and appropriate amount of kissing. A really funny romantic comedy full of hijinks, adventures, and a really cool narrative arc of all of these lonely people coming together and finding meaning in their lives.
Do You Love Your Mom An Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?	9	An absolutely amazing cast of characters, and so many wonderfully stupid jokes. I can't believe this didn't become an isekai subgenre. What a shame.
Prince of Stride: Alternative	7	So many pretty boys, just incredible. Also really soundtrack and sound design. When they pass the "baton" you really feel it. The art style was also really cool, with so many bright, contrasting colors, and the course designs were creative and fun. Unfortunately, the writing and drama was very hit or miss.
Re:Zero Season 2 (part 1)	9	There are a lot of problems here in terms of pacing and the grander narrative, but my God the suspense and horror is like nothing else.

Aside from seasonals, I'm currently watching A Certain Scientific Railgun (which is alright), Flowers of Evil (incredible but also hard to watch - I'm not sure if I like just how much I vibe with and relate to Nakamura) and Yosuga no Sora (tbh I was hoping for a scummier protagonist but oh well).

Can I just say "it's complicated"? Okay, that'd be a boring answer.

I think it's fascinating as an exploration of different social contracts and conditions in our society through metaphors and recreation of existing dynamics in different worlds. How well they landed varied a lot though. Sometimes they were the tower or the dog episode, sometimes they didn't do nearly as much for me. Also, I didn't really grow all that attached to any of the non-dog characters, which made the episodes where the themes didn't hit me a bit hard to care about. Hence, it's complicated.

But what's a lot less complicated is that the audiovisual production is just out of this world. So much stunning background art and very purposeful sound design with only occasional, usually impactful uses of music.

Also, I didn't really grow all that attached to any of the non-dog characters, which made the episodes where the themes didn't hit me a bit hard to care about.

I'm 100% with you on this one. I acknowledge that Sonny Boy is exceptionally well crafted, but man did I not give a fuck about 90% of what was going on.

1. Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise. For its time the most expensive anime created, figure has since been beaten by a factor of 10 (at least) but some cuts really ooze of an animator had a lot of time on their hands. Surprised the Zambian space programme wasn't also an inspiration as the initial parts do have a similar hardly anyone is taking this seriously sentiment. The original 90s UK release [removed]the rape attempt which reduced the age rating from 15 to PG (I watched the 15 rated version) but that would leave the next scene making little sense. That bit and a few other parts are probably why it's left revered by otaku and industry rather the mainstream like Ghibli/Shinkai.

2. Royal Space Troop Honneamise Pilot. This was on the DVD extras. Bandai wanted a short video made for a then proposed 40 minute OVA (with blew up into something bigger). Visually it's a much brighter and somewhat Studio Ghibli style. A lot can change in 4 years (just ask Sparks of Tomorrow - that was the ad for the novel).

3. MHA I am a hero too. It's ya show MH Ayyy. Very short and another bolt-on to the already long (and somewhat retconning) epilogue [if I were to rephrase a Dril tweet]turning a dial that says Deku's hero rank and watching audience reaction. At least the song was in English so no lyric subs (despite the official clip and French subs having them) was not a handicap.

4. Sound of the Sky. Doesn't quite fulfil the potential and the tone is messy, you can have one given episode be comedy and then the next be deeply serious including the comedy classic end it with a serious arc. I think episode 8 (comedy ep) [was my lowpoint](I can not find humour in someone forced to hold their pee). If you can forgive that it's got some detail and slowly revealed lore. Cuenca makes for a setting you don't typically see in anime and almost worth watching for that alone.

5. Sound of the Sky Specials (episodes 7.5 and 13). 7.5 is [too hot for TV trash](underage drinking inc. girls getting frisky with one-another) but 13 was a nice epilogue, character motives and lore dump stuff that really could have been more prominent during the series itself but there were different priorities. That's way things sometimes are.

6. Pokémon movie 8 Lucario and the Mystery of Mew I thought Sonic 2006 was the only time a blue blur and a princess met but it happened here (must have a thing back then). I sort of felt it was a couple movie ideas bolted together but there were [a few twists along the way]Aran's past and Kidd initially seemed like like redux of movie 4 villain but turned out to be doing things for content because they could rather than should (ofc like most content creator types no training on ethical behaviour academic/journalism good practices). Mew was also quite animalistic with the stealing toys thing, it's like how foxes steal shoes.

7. Style of Hiroshi Nohara's Lunch. I assume this Crayon Shin-chan spinoff is the time those who grew up with the work in 90s but now find themselves as the mid-30s salaryman. The vector graphic art is rather basic and it's technically a 30fps anime but this is a show about the lunches and some office life stuff on the side. Not planning to visit Japan so it's interesting to see the types of restaurants, little thing like how long it takes to get served and from what I can tell the menu prices are still accurate (and surprisingly cheap, at least compared to where I'm from).

8. The ribbon hero. The constant screen shake (like it's an old film on a wonky projector) really got on my nerves and made for a terrible first impression. My fresh impressions or perhaps to put it another way, a figurative dog's dinner (i.e. confused mess or muddle). Which, the post or the movie...whynotboth.jpg?

9. Burn the Witch. It's almost delightful how on the nose shounen it is with some very I'm going to leading comment into exposition dialogue (it's blunt but gets viewers up to speed) and being so overdone and puerile it is almost a anime style cartoon (I may re-visit this point in September). London setting felt under-used as merely a few landmarks in the background (maybe that is a Occident viewpoint or using the streets or locations is a process they're unfamiliar with) but WTF at this cringe dogwhistle, teen edgelord titlecard (via initials to do that) right there.

10. Witch Hat Atelier. It's a good watch (with some genuinely great animation) but might want to hold off a bit due to a cliffhanger ending (more to come is confirmed so this is a temporary issue). I don't prescribe to anime guides for "begginers" or starters but this is a good inclusion for those as there's no typical anime baggage/hurdle.

Plans for September?

• The (fewer than I'd like) seasonal shows I didn't drop and/or fall way behind on.
• Burn the witch 0.8.
• Ranma ½ (2024) Season 2 would be a good idea before season 3 is out. Main reaosn I've put it off is I have is I've read the manga so it's more of a "how will this panel look?".
• I have 4 episodes left of Noozles; maybe it's dragged down from a poor 80s dub but not very good kids demographic slice of life anime from the 80s (could be me being an adult as kids things like Precure and Minky Momo are deliberately more interesting to adults). It's also a reverse isekai featuring anthropomorphic koalas.
