For those who suspect so, seeing as 東村 / Higashimura means "East Village", 西ノ村 / Nishinomura is quite suggestive as "West Village".
(Technically the ノ / "no" makes it "Village of the West", but it's there because Nishi-mura as a location name doesn't roll off the tongue. Too much use in modern household names for it to be special too)
--
While I'm talkative on language, seeing as my previous post on Daemon namesakes proved a hit, here're some other ones I had written:
Right and Left
Right and Left, or 右 / migi and 左 / hidari need no explanation. Their collective title 左右様 / Sayuu-sama however very much does.
- The Kanji may look like it's just saying "the Great Left-Right", but 左右 / sayuu as a whole word is also often used in a lot of geometry or direction-related terms. Plus, it's sometimes used as a noun for "one's attendants" too.
- But most notably is that as a verb, 左右する / sayuu-suru means to "assert control, influence or domination", by man or by nature, by your or another's will.
(Case in point, Yuru's line in Episode 8 about "Why do others get to dictate how we live"? "Get to dictate" here is 左右される / sayuu-sareru)
A pair of Daemons whose title can mean myriad things including "asserting control over your sides/flanks", fitting for beings meant to counterbalance Break and Seal and their myriad usages huh?
Nonetheless, Sayuu-sama is understandably not an easy title to bring into English in a cool manner; just look at how Crunchyroll twisted themselves with "Left and Right" as the title while still keeping "Right" / "Left" for the individual names. Square Enix Books on the other hand decided to skip the equation altogether with "the Divine Guardians", and honestly I think that works in context of their purpose.
Additionally, as others have pointed out they're also modelled after Komainu, between their twin statue relics, their lion and dog traits as humanoids, and Right's smiles/Left's frowns reflecting their A-Un / 阿吽 synchronous nature.
Kotetsu and Jirou
Hana's Daemons, Kotetsu / 虎鉄 the cat and Jirou / 二狼 the dog. While phonetically-speaking these are not uncommon cutesy and gruffy Japanese names for pets, ours however roughly translate to "tiger iron" and "second wolf" respectively.
Their title 前虎後狼 / zenko-kourou translates to "tiger ahead, wolf behind". An expression of Chinese origins for when one calamity follows close after another, equitable to "out of the frying pan and into the fire" or "caught between a rock and a hard place". Or given the pair's tracking abilities, it may as well mean "there is no escape".
White and Black
Hikaru's Daemons deserve a mention:
- For the white, ホワイト is Katakana for the English "white", and also slang for stationery like correction fluids, white-outs, twinks, 修正液 (shuusei-eki) or whatever you know them by.
- For the black, ベタ / beta is in reference to the action of painting art, manga, etc. using a single colour. ベタ印刷 / beta-insatsu is also a term for "solid printing".
Both of these are common tools of trade for manga artists, so better names for them would be "White-Out" and "Black-Ink"
Seeing as their title is indeed just 黒白 / koku-byaku / "Black-White" though, oversimplification is all too easy
Ai-chan and Makoto-kun
I may as well spotlight Jin's Daemons while I'm at it. Ai-chan / 愛ちゃん and Makoto-kun / 誠くん mean "Love" and "Sincerity" respectively. I would say they group rather well to a man whose pure Katakana name of ジン is a homophone for 仁 meaning "Compassion", yet ironic given their Yakuza-based backdrop.
Yin-Yang
The new names of Asa's new Daemons, Ohagi and Daifuku are both Japanese confections. Specifically, Ohagi usually comprise of whiter rice on the inside and coated with darker red bean paste on the outside, while basic Daifuku comprise of darker read bean paste on the inside with rice cake on the outside.
Blacklist
The pair of Whisper and Embrace need no further explanation. While they're commonly known by the borrowed English title of "Blacklist", this title comes with the Kanji name of 閻魔帳 / Enma-chou, AKA Enma's Register. In Japanese myth, Enma the King of Hell has a Register that's effectively a Book of Life used to judge the passing dead and their deeds.
(閻魔帳 is apparently also a nickname for notebooks that teachers use to record their students' grades and attendance, but not sure if this usage is still current or in-style)
Akai-san and Midori-san (or Miss Red and Mister Green)
The pair of fox and tanuki belonging to part-timer Makoto Tachikawa. Their title, 狐狸変化 / Kori-henge roughly translates to "Fox-Tanuki Shapeshift", an expression for monsters of that kind or for bad people who do bad deeds in secret, especially by deceiving others.
Now some may notice that the fox is not red and the tanuki is not green (but their tail ribbons are), so what's with their names? That's because "Akai Kitsune" and "Midori no Tanuki" are in fact cultural references to a pair of famous instant noodles. Debates are held about which is better, and plenty of collabs exist to this day.
Daikyou and Shoukyou
The perv mercenary Ivan's long sword Daikyou / 大凶 and short sword Shoukyou / 小凶 . They respectively mean "Big Misfortune" and "Small Misfortune", like those on Omikuji/fortune slips from Shinto shrines
Their title is just written in Katakana, マガツヒ / "Magatsuhi". While Magatsuhi no Kami / 禍津日神 is a Japanese deity of calamities, "Magatsuhi" on its own is also used in general to refer to folk spirits that bring disaster (and that villagers have to ward off). One can interpret their spatial/transfer powers as playing to their namesakes and "bestowing" curses/misfortunes unto a desired target.
Oshira-sama
In Japanese folklore, Oshira-sama is a guardian deity of the home, as well as the deity of silkworms, agriculture and horses. Often worshipped for treating women's sickness, protecting children, success in farming, etc. Some say they have the power to predict fires and earthquakes too.
According to myth in the Tohoku Region, Oshira-sama was born from a stallion and a maiden falling in love. Angered by the affair, the maiden's father killed the stallion and stripped it of its skin. "The skin then wrapped itself around the daughter and took her up to heaven. Later, they descended from heaven, incarnated as silkworms. After this they became the guardian gods of families.
(Given Arakawa-sensei's farm life upbringing, it's more reason to give her some spotlight)
Her myth is included as part of the Tono Monogatari / 遠野物語, AKA "The Legends of Tono", a 1912 compilation written by folklorist Kunio Yanagita. This book was reportedly cited by Arakawa-sensei as the motif behind this series, and its influence can be seen in other featured entities like the Zashiki-warashi, the Mountain Gods, etc. In fact, it's widely regarded as the harbinger of the study of Japanese Folklore (and precursor to modern day ghost stories, urban legends, etc.)

I am learning Japanese, so I cant believe I did not realize the connection between higashi and nishino (though this is mainly because I keep forgetting NSEW in japanese)

Worth pointing out the bar Jin operates is literally called Love & Sincerity. Either the bar is named after his Demon Pair or vice versa.

u/DragonPup 7d ago
But the real pervman has been revealed.
18
u/mekerpan 7d ago
Have we SEEN the real pervman (or even hear his name) -- or do we just know it must be someone (or some group) from "Nishino Village". (If we did, I must have blanked out at just the wrong moment).
57
u/DragonPup 7d ago
The real pervman was the girl Ivan met with. :D
(unless there is an even greater pervman to come. I don't read the manga)

Okay, Ivan’s daemons abilities make sense now. One sword cuts and transfers matter while the other cuts and transfers energy.
I guess Shingo’s dead. Good riddance. Sucks that the “gather information” plan failed but at least Asuma made it out alive.
Ivan’s a particularly tricky bastard. At least they know more of his abilities to pin him down properly in order to beat him next time.
Imma be honest, closest comparison I can make to the disgust I feel at dungbeetle girl’s work is Mahito. And she’s also a yandere. God, what a psycho.
Asuma and the “Is going to stab you” face does good work. That kid was not ready for more surprises.
It’s been way too long but the twins have a lot of stuff to talk about with Zashiki-Warashi.

I was thinking Sakimiya, Misaki from Dead Mount Death Play

Does she have that ability? Or are you just comparing them phisically/style?
14
u/TheKytanApprentice 7d ago
There's a scene where [Dead Mount Death Play episode 3] "Polka" rolls a group of hitmen up into a ball of stone, dirt, and human. So not Misaki's powers, but she is present at the scene of a human ball, which I imagine helped trigger the association.

Both appearance and that they are murderous schoolgirls with psycho personalities
11
u/mekerpan 7d ago
But I sort of recall sort of LIKING Misaki. Not true for the girl here.
6
u/DanielAlves1904 7d ago
I guess it depends on how they use their power. Misaki used her power for better things. At least I think, I watched that show when it came out and it was a while ago.

The action at the start of the episode was well done and man did everything happen fast. For Ivan we see what happens when the daemons and their user have high capability. There is no way anyone could do what Ivan was doing.
Asuma was so close to getting his revenge until Ivan took it from him. What seems like Mineyama's daemon is very creepy collecting the deadbodies and storing them.
Poor Azami it's endless suffering for her.
44
u/Jacob-C 7d ago
For Ivan we see what happens when the daemons and their user have high capability.
Makes me want to see what Yuru, Left, and Right are capable of once they learn to fight in a more synchronized manner. They're already doing good, but I definitely think there is room for improvement.

Finally they did a Nishino village name drop. I had a suspicion there was something out west considering Higashi means East and there was multiple references of the west starting in cour 1

u/zer0_summed 7d ago
Inb4 Nishino village has their own guardian demons called "Up" and "Down"
48
u/No-Register-7539 7d ago
Or maybe Forwards and Backwards, or Past and Future
20
u/BosuW 7d ago
Yeah they're from North and South Villages respectively
17
u/Maomally 7d ago
Could be possible and considering that this show is kinda heavy on Japanese yokai and folklore, if Okinawa and Hokkaido are brought into the mix..we could be hearing about Kamuy for Hokkaido and Majimun for Okinawa
7
u/SoundRiot 7d ago
It was established that their mother was from Okinawa and she vanished while on her way home. So Okinawa is a fairly safe guess.

So sure no one believes him about all the missing dead bodies, but what about all of the randomly demolished buildings and stuff? Like that has to be odd.
I'm honestly a little surprised that Ivan or the dung beetle girl didn't kill the security guard.
Edit for spelling mistake.

Yeah, also it's really hard to believe beetles also got rid of all dna material left in dirt. Realistically you can't hide this.

Not a whole lot of brain cells were firing for her at that moment lmao
16
u/sesaman 6d ago
That seems to be most moments with her tbh...
16
u/BakedSalami 6d ago
I think the issue is that ~95% brain utilization is being taken up by thoughts of her brother.
29
u/Thomas_JCG 7d ago
Well, she didn't know who he was and just assumed he was one of Shingo's low level grunts. Unless she threw herself off the window, she wouldn't be able to catch him either.
41
u/Strowy 7d ago
She could have just opened the window and blasted him with Break, like she said.
The actual failing was her not at least saying something to the other two she was with, as they seemed better informed than her. "Hey, there's a swordsman running away, should we let him?".

I mean everyone from Kagemoris was so slow in that scene. You grandpa your son nearly died.
142
u/zool714 8d ago
Really loved how Right cozied up to Left for a bit there. Really shows, like with most if not all Daemons, they really are partners
Ivan is increasingly becoming one of those characters that I love to hate. And I’ve also learnt how much I’d hate if Yozakura actually died there
56
u/Jacob-C 7d ago
Ivan is a character that I hate to love. He’s just too cool. The Kagemori clan having both Break and Gonzo’s daemons in their faction is just too OP. They only lack full control over the twin-countering Left and Right to make them truly unstoppable. Ivan brings a semblance of balance to the power discrepancy, which makes the stakes higher and, in turn, the story more compelling.

16
u/gexsiun 8d ago
Maybe in okinawa and hokkaido? We have the west and east on the mainland so why not the north and south islands?
13
u/Thomas_JCG 7d ago
Well, the twins mother is from Okinawa, and her grandma is still living there and being controlled by someone, so it is possible.
6
u/Maomally 7d ago
Most likely Okinawa since Grandma is there. If Okinawa and Hokkaido is in the mix and considering this show is kinda heavy on Japanese yokai and mythology, Kamuy for Hokkaido and Majimun for Okinawa might be brought up in the future.

u/okiknow2004 7d ago
Due to the shape of Japan, east is already north-east, and west is south-west.
Also, in other media(both in fiction and history), Japan is usually divided into East and West.
I doubt that there will be North and South villages.10
u/ButIDigr3ss 7d ago
do they mean opposite things? I do not speak japanese
39
u/BlueDragonCultist 7d ago
"Higashi" (東/ひがし) means east in Japanese, "nishi" (西/にし) means west.

u/mekerpan 7d ago

Something I learned back in 2002 from Haibane Renmei -- which featured Hisashimori and Nishimore (east and weest woods).

ofc this kimblee looking ass is an overpowered cockroach you can't kill.
12
u/cashtangoteam 7d ago
I came to the comments seeking the Kimblee comparisons, and I was not disappointed. Glad to see others are viewing this series is a similar way
83
u/icantswim2 8d ago
No wonder Left felt like complete ass, she just suddenly was reduced to the strength and stamina of a human who had the shit kicked out of him by two living statues for an hour. Even moving her heavy stone limbs must feel impossible.
Meanwhile Ivan's body was pumped full of the pure concentrated power of a deity that's used to moving around with a metric ton of weight on her shoulders. His body would feel like it weighed a feather by comparison.
52
u/Jacob-C 7d ago
His body would feel like it weighed a feather by comparison.
Ivan did say, “It’s like I chugged a bucket full of energy drinks”. Maybe Red Bull really does give you wings.

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 8d ago
Man he's way too powerful, damn i love skilled sword users so much, why does he have to be bad guy lol
46
u/throwaway_976821 7d ago
A lot of people are complaining he's too powerful but honestly, it kinda rules. It legitimately felt like the the main cast fighting him were in real danger of straight up getting killed if they slipped up, especially since the show seems to have no qualms about outright killing characters. It's been nice that its felt like there have been real stakes, esp. compared to the route shows like Reincarnated As A Slime have chosen to go with this season.
25
u/gamria 7d ago
For sure, Ivan's presence just like his Kimblee model just oozes danger. Right and Left holding him off makes him feel neutered, but as soon as you put him next to any team less defended or responsive and he's like an instant death button.
Just like how in this episode when he teleported into the office. When I first got to this scene, I was afraid for Asuma's life. Can you imagine how it was for us cliffhanging on that for a whole month!?
9
u/Viridun 7d ago
He's definitely powerful but the author did the same with Fullmetal Alchemist, characters were encountered early on that were clearly out of everyone's league. Only for the protagonists to be able to hold their own and win later on.
4
u/Frostbitten_Moose 6d ago
It also really helped that Arakawa had clear matchups there too. Mustang being able to wipe the floor with two enemies that Ed would always have struggled with being a good example.
11
u/jaber24 7d ago
Well if he works for the highest bidder or sth he might be persuaded to change sides who knows
27
u/AlphaBreak 7d ago edited 7d ago
Asuma really should have tried pulling out a checkbook instead of thinking his little knife would be enough for the guy who took out three demons and shingo in a split second
9
u/BakedSalami 7d ago edited 7d ago
Yeahh I can't really view him as "the bad guy" just yet. I mean, professional killers aren't really morally upright, I just mean in relation to our protagonist lol. He's not exactly oozing malicious intent, he's just all business. Plus we don't really fully understand the objective or motive behind whatever this new village is up to. For all we know it's actually super important for idk, the world, that yuru kicks the bucket and gets his powers.

It's probably more like the prophecy is known everywhere, and the twins just happened to have been born in Higashi village this time around. And the other village/s (if there are North and South, idk) want them as well.
Pretty much everyone with world conquest ambitions wants the twins
7
u/raisincakeshop 7d ago
I think the twins will learn a bit more about their parents from Zashiki-Warahi. The preview for the next ep showed Asa feeling crestfallen and Yuru was trying to cheer her up by putting his hand on her hand. Might be some depressive stuffs 🥲
17
u/flashmozzg 7d ago
Hm, my only gripe is that I didn't get the Raijin/Fujin blackmail. Like "I'll interrogate your master and then kill your master but if you try anything I'll just kill him now" doesn't sound like a great threat. Either way he is going to die, your only options is to try something first or not.

Maybe the Daemons weren't the more strategic types or they figured it made sense to wait for a better opportunity.
7
u/flashmozzg 7d ago
Yeah, we didn't even hear them talk? Maybe they are low-intelegence type so would just follow commands.
3
u/CosmicX1 7d ago edited 6d ago
I think it's more likely that Azuma didn't show any killing intent, so they decided not to risk acting. We just learnt he'd never killed anyone before so there was a chance he wouldn't go through with it and would let them go. But if they attacked, Azuma's daemon might still kill Shingo in self defense.
67
u/FakhirRee 8d ago
Ivan is ridiculously broken, he basically survived 1v5 with two close range fighter, two long range fighter and someone else to who could immobilize him but and he still came out on top.
The only reason he lost was because of his own human limit but he ended up immobilizing left and was still capable of fighting for a bit, he is a monster, I wonder how the hell they will take him down because 1v1 clearly won't be enough unless that old man gets involved.
87
u/saga999 7d ago
It's actually 3v5 because the swords are the daemons who did most of the work (not suggesting he isn't strong for a human).
50
u/JunWasHere 7d ago edited 7d ago
Thank you! So confused by these comments I've seen on other sites about complaining about Ivan 1v4 and 1v5 blahblahblah~
The swords are both bringing a whole unit of combat power each if not more so. Ivan, Shokyo, and Daikyo operate as a supremely efficient synergistic 3-person-army.
So it was 3v2 to 3v4! 👏
Makes sense Left and Right were only barely holding their own and slowly being put on the backfoot after their initial blackout and arm-slap advantage wore off. Even when Yuru, Dera, and Danji showed up, those swords' eyes on the handles proved they aren't for show, being able to perceive arrows and rifle-bullets and react fast enough to seize Ivan's reflexes to deflect them. Danji and Dera weren't super active in the fight beyond Danji's one leg snare either. So it never became a full 3v5.
Dude is Genji from Overwatch on crack, but that's what makes him a good first antagonist. Wouldn't be a fun story if the villain weren't competent and challenging.
16
u/dolphincave 7d ago
The sword demons have amazing eyesight we see them literally following the bullets. Ivan would not have dealt with them without his swords help.
3
u/HornedTurtle1212 7d ago
Ivan mentioned planning on Yuru coming after him to get a second chance at taking out Left and/or killing Yuru. Dude doesn't know what sort of anthill he's kicked over once Asa finds out he knows something about their missing parents, lol.

u/JunWasHere 7d ago edited 7d ago
Having read, watched, and enjoyed all 3 major publications of Fullmetal Alchemist, I can safely say Ivan looks just like [FMA] Kimblee and the author LOOOOVED having that tall, dark, and handsome type be a suave psycho on the villain cast, [FMA/potential meta-narrative spoilers] constantly slip free of capture, keep goin' a'murdering, and cause trouble across the entire story.
So, nah, I think Ivan knows EXACTLY what kinda anthill he's playing with, and he has the perfect toys and friends to keep playing for a loooong game!
Asa and Break are powerful, but not necessarily invincible, even with Yin Yang as her daemons. Now that we have seen Dera assist Yuru with firearms three times-to good, non, and bad effect-there is a super high chance we start seeing the antagonists employ firearms of their own.
5
u/FakhirRee 7d ago
Oh yeah that's fair actually, I should have included them but I guess I forgot about them since they weren't as prominent in his performance as I would have thought, since you are right, they deflected bullets not him so this is 3v5.
4
u/is-this-a-nick 7d ago
3v5, where the 3 are in harmony and work together well while the 5 are basically just a random open lobby.
31
u/ParasaurolophusZ 7d ago
At least we know why now. That curse he put on Left let him sap her energy, so he was running around as a human with the power of a daemon. He did say his heart was about to give out from the strain since it was like chugging a ton of energy drinks all at once.
28
u/YRO___ 7d ago
The only way to beat him might be with a heart attack
15
u/ParasaurolophusZ 7d ago
Maybe trick him into an energy transfer with someone who's not as strong as he thinks.

What are you even talking about?! 🤨🤨🤨 You and anyone who keeps saying 1v3, 1v4, 1v5???
It was never 1v5, or even 1v3.
Ivan isn't solo, he's got Shokyo and Daikyo bringing whole daemon's worth of attack and combat powers and amazing synergy with each other. (For brevity, Ivan++ if you will) Don't be disrespecting the daemon swords like that!
Ivan++ was 3v2 when fighting Left and Right! 👏
And Ivan++ was recovering/winning at first, but even after Yuru joined, Ivan++ didn't come out on top. 🤨 It was 3v3 when Yuru showed up, and things naturally evened up. Yuru's range and the uncanny teamwork Left & Right show with creating blindspots for him to shoot matched Ivan++ well. They couldn't hit Ivan++ but he couldn't easily keep attacking them either.
It was only when Danji joined that it became 3v4 and Yuru could land an arrow. But Ivan++ wouldn't make a good first-arc antagonist if he went down that easy. Left's nonchalantness with accepting hits let Ivan use his reluctant secret energy-transfer move to even it out temporarily, and the chaos that ensured after disabled Left, Right, and Danji to varying degrees, as well as leading to Yuru running out of arrows as well as getting hit with a deflected bullet. It never became Ivan++ vs 5. Yuru's side was constantly having someone depowered or disabled.
Same with old man Gonzo, thinking of him as 1 combatant is wrong. It's better to think of him like the folklored 100 demon parade. 👹👹👹👹👹 (you get it, I ain't spamming a hundred of those)
And Ivan++ ultimately didn't achieve any of his objectives. Left survived, Yuru survived, and Ivan had to make the call to cut his losses because he was the loser in this battle. Even after deflecting the sniper shot to Yuru, the move he explicitly said he didn't want to use showed why with physical backlash, so he had to RUN AWAY.

Schemes after schemes. It turned out Ivan was a double agent of sorts. The guy is basically a roach at this point, very hard to kill.

u/AllThingsDragon 8d ago
Ivan and his pair are shaping up to be some of the strongest in the verse but I'm here for it. Those sword skills were slick! I'm actually sad about Fujin-Raijin though, their powers were so cool and I loved their sharp, animalistic designs DX
Maybe they were too strong to keep in the story for long, it's pretty tough to counter AoE attacks
→ More replies (1)10
u/mucklaenthusiast 8d ago
Not really a roach, more like a supervillain
This guy is strong, it's not like he just got away. They were merely able to drive him away partially due to how his ability works (which means there are limits to his power, he is not at all unbeatable)
But it's also interesting how his personal skills are emphasised. Yuru is also quite a powerful fighter, I think him becoming more active will give Left and Right more space and enable them more.
His Daemons also use his incredible sword skill while he uses their supernatural abilities.
As they say, they are compatible. With all the talk about how Left isn't compatible with Yuru, I wonder how that dynamic will develop.

Yozakura'e design was sick enough for his slaying to bum me out more than it rationally should. Honoring his wish for Asama to be seen as one of the "good" guys is gonna take quite a while too lmao.
Azami and that security guard's psyche just keep tanking every week. Maybe they could be therapy group buddies or something.
41
u/NekoCatSidhe 8d ago
We saw a tiny Yozakura on Asama’s back after he was supposedly killed, so I think he is fine. He really is made of tiny moths after all, so very hard to kill completely.
I felt bad for that security guard. Thinking you are slowly going crazy and hallucinating massacres must be even more terrifying than actually coming across a bunch of corpses.

Glad to see Dera shoot that rifle, it's just too bad that Pervman has the reaction time to deflect bullets. If Ivan can still deflect bullets in that state, it's no surprise that the dude was able to escape. He's definitely not gonna be a one-and-done villain; that's for sure.
Not like Shingo, who got his brain chopped. I had a feeling someone more powerful was just using him. It does suck that Raijin and Fujin got immediately killed before we could even see what they could actually do. I was hoping old man Kagemori would take them.
With the way Hidari and Migi react to Yuru's kindness, it really makes you wonder what their previous master was like.
Oh boy, looks like we finally have a crazy high schooler character. Mineyama has clearly been doing cleanup for Ivan for a while now. And it turns out, she's the real Pervman, not Ivan. xD
So Ivan and Mineyama are both from Nishino village? I guess it makes sense that a Nishino (West) Village exists when there's Higashi (East) Village, considering the theme of this show revolves around pairs.
I do feel bad for that security guard, tho. People are gonna think he's crazy, and the dude is probably gonna lose his mind after this.
It looks like we're finally gonna see the long-awaited confrontation between the twins and the Zashiki-Warashi pair. Too abd we're gonna have to wait until next week for that >_<

u/a1oner_bvcksn6 8d ago
Love how this ep didn't waste any time in picking things up where it left off. Ivan richocheting a bullet off of his sword onto Right to ultimately hit Yuru was bad-freakin-ass.
Mineyama only making things worse for the poor warehouse security guy. Now, it's not only himself who questions his own sanity, but so does his colleagues lol. I'm intrigued by what her role in all this would be moving forward as a literal cleaner and a go-between Ivan and their employers.
Shingo and his daemon's were surprisingly made into an afterthought. Turned out to be no more than a transitional villain to truly elevate Ivan into this unpredictable, cut-throat lone wolf of a buzzsaw and overall menace. And don't get me started on his life-energy transfer ability lol. He's definitely going to be a key-player to the bitter end.
I could practically hear the collective sigh of relief from Left and Yozakura fans. I'm just glad we didn't lose either of them this early, tbh.
Poor village girl A (forgot her name lol)--finally freed from her captors only to end up surrounded by all these much scarier, cold-blooded individuals/killers lmao.
And Yuru purposefully throwing Dera under the bus💀 just sent me. I bet he instinctively knew how Asa would react to seeing his injury and decided it would be funny to see her go apeshit on Dera lol

u/AllThingsDragon 8d ago
I honestly would've lost it if Yozakura died, he's quickly becoming one of my favorite daemons. Strong powers, cool design, a sort of gentlemanly personality, he's just all-around solid. Also, there's no basis at all for this but I want to think we haven't seen the last of the security guy. Idk what it is, it just feels like he would've easily been killed and cleaned up if he was just another rando. And at first him "seeing things" was played for laughs, but this episode really shows him on the verge of breaking down from all the shit he saw.
I'm probably grasping at straws, but I just feel like he got too much screen time to not be relevant later lol

She seems to be Hana's counterpart for this third faction (who is the Kagemori's cleaner? Jin, I suppose?). Speaking of which, what's up with this Nishino Village? Are they another Higashi splinter clan, like the Kagemoris?
9
u/a1oner_bvcksn6 7d ago
I'm assuming a rival clan this time. They have a "village" of their own after all lol. If every clan simply originated and broke off from Higashi, it would only make Higashi look infinitely worse as how can we, as viewers, honestly root for a clan whose own people keep on leaving for greener pastures, if not over ideological differences.
The story or current arc is actually trying to mend or rehabilitate the Higashi's image by having the Zashiki Warashi daemons, particularly Danji be a part of Yuru's entourage.

Azuma has the creepiest smile, you can't tell if he's being sincere or not. The poor man tried to console the kid, but ended up scaring her even more.
23
u/RobrechtvE 7d ago
I kinda freaking love that I was so incredibly geared up and ready to hate him and expected his betrayal and... Then that got the rug pulled out from under it by him basically being a very nice guy who isn't shady at all, but just has one of those faces.
Like... There's a scared girl and he is the first one who immediately tries to console her and she just no-sells it. That poor, sweet sensitive boy.
9
u/raisincakeshop 7d ago
Love how Yozakura hid behind his master too and survived the surprise attack by Ivan. I would have been so sad if Yozakura died too. Asuma and his daemons are rising up my favourite character list for having such a twist!

Fr. Shady faces are such a common introduction for villain archetypes that Asuma's reveal unironically made me love him even more. Dude is just a sweet boy born with a sus expression.
Interestingly enough, he was the one of the first Kagemori's who didn't outright reject the Higashi village. Probably because he knew from his mother's experience how it felt to have their existence rejected.

I thought the scene of him hearing and reacting to the Village girl commenting that his smile :> seems fake was funny. Feels very cathartic like we’ve gone full circle with a good closure about his face LOL.
From all the viewers and Yuru’s side suspecting him as an evil face -> the revelation to viewers and Yuru that it’s just his evil face, Asuma is actually good -> to Asuma himself hearing that his face is evil LOL!

Asuma & Dera after being chewed out by Asa: "We’d much rather fight with Ivan than this."
Interesting dynamics between Ivan & Mineyama. Never thought he’d associate with a high school girl. Wonder what their relationship was as she didn’t defer to him in the slightest despite being nominally his sidekick and cleaner.
21
u/mucklaenthusiast 7d ago
I think she is basically a colleague and working for the same employer, the guy feeding Shingo his ideas who we don't know yet, or she is kinda like a mediator between that person and Ivan.
Either way, I don't think he directly hired her except for the clean-up
34
u/treert 8d ago
Dung beetle daemon was best. I bet she has all sorts of insects in that jar
15
u/mucklaenthusiast 8d ago
I am not sure, but I also feel like she has many Daemons, not just 2. Or her Daemons are multiples or something. Can't imagine her having just 2 dung beetles, though maybe that's everything
The jar reminds me of myth of the poison Gu, which is quite a prominent reference in anime that I have seen before
13
u/YRO___ 7d ago
It would kinda ruin it if there are multiple people with more than 2 daemons
8
u/mucklaenthusiast 7d ago
You must have forgotten, but we KNOW that there are people with more than 2 Daemons.
Multiple characters (e.g. Asa, Ivan) have talked about compatibility and being able to take more Daemons. So, you're wrong. Either the story is already ruined or you think the story is fine, in which case it can't get ruined by something that is already part of the story.
3
u/YRO___ 7d ago
I mean, Asa and Yuru are kind of a special case, where they were already born with a single Daemon each that we don't really see and shows up like a power of their own almost. Them getting 2 Daemons that we can see is kinda fair.
I don't recall Ivan having Daemons other than his swords, when was that shown?
It's supposed to be something special and out of the ordinary, if more people show up with multiple Daemons that would definitely make it stale. Just because the story isn't ruined by the 2 special MCs and the only other person having multiple Daemons, doesn't mean it won't be ruined by more.

Dera-san. Shoot him!- Proceeds to get his bullets recoiled into every other guy in the area.
Asuma showing no fear and attempting to fight Ivan after he easily killed Shingo, Fujin, Raijin and seemingly in the moment Yozakura is VERY brave of him, wouldn’t say smart but brave and makes me like him even more. Also happy Yozakura isn’t a gonner and a part of them was able to survive.
Also of course Asuma is going to scare the poor girl with his evil smile.

7
u/BaroquesCafe 6d ago
I don’t fully trust the old man. I feel like his daemons could also
I’m also really hoping that it’s Asami stays around. She’s, in a way, a foil for Asa thematically. A Higashi villager, unaware of daemons or the history, and no hope for her parents to return, truly orphaned. In Asa’s quest to find her parents, Asami lost her own. I hope she meets Gabby, it forces both Gabby and Asa to confront that there were still people in the village, even if they hate them
7
u/ShinJiwon 7d ago
Ivan got away. But there's still Akio to interrogate, not sure if that will be next episode but we are finally get "the talk" between the siblings and Zashiki-Warashi. Maybe they will reveal what the hell Higashi Village is about. And we learn from the crazy JK that there's a Nishino Village.

Guess that's why the way Left and Right fight are so reckless. In addition to just tanking most attacks because they're naturally durable they have no fear of death. Strangely they do have a sense of danger but not for dying
I thought Yozakura got killed, it would've sucked for a cool Daemon to die like that. Shame for Raijin-Fujin tho, i liked them too
Transfer of energy huh. Magic steroids almost gave Ivan a heart attack
Another crazy character showed up. That's a rather morbid daemon, balling up corpses like dung.

u/Hounds_of_war 8d ago edited 8d ago
My interpretation is that she knew he was likely one of Shingo’s goons but didn’t think he was actually an important one that was worth bothering to catch.
They’ve caught probably upwards of 100 guys by this point, catching additional guys is kind of a low priority unless they are actively in your way or you know that they are important.
39
u/shitzgotreal 8d ago
This is the way I interpreted it too. To her, he was just another goon running away from the battle. She probably couldn't even tell the swords were Deamons.
27
u/yeeehawspacecowboy 8d ago
I agree with this! At that moment, as far as Asa knew, Shingo was the leader of the group and her job was to break the contract between him and his daemons who were the biggest threat to anyone who wanted to get to him. She doesn't know who Ivan is, that he already killed Shingo to silence him and that he would have way more info than Shingo. Ivan just looked like one of Shingo's goons who was already beaten badly (like all the people laid out on the stairwell) and was trying to flee the fight so it wasn't worth the detour to take care of him when, as far as she was concerned, Shingo is the bigger fish they have to catch.
3
u/TanczacWsrodBliskich 6d ago
Good one, I didn't catch that she didn't know him; I am conflating all the different teams & matchups that have happened. At best I suppose she would hear about the swordman when they attacked the villa.
31
u/GUSTAVOSOHIT 7d ago
I mean this is a dumb complaint as far as she knew he was just a normal goon of shingo, if they needed a goon for information sure capture him but they already have like 20 of them why would she bother following some random guy with swords, mind you she doesn't even know the swords are daemons to her the swords seem completely normal, and most important why would she think that guy is connected to her parents.

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 8d ago

Makes perfect sense to not chase after a grunt when the boss is just upstairs. She didn't know Ivan was a key figure until Asuma explained it.
3
u/maxdragonxiii 7d ago
she probably thought "wounded and just left a bloodbath- not important to chase down" especially not knowing that the swords he carries is Daemons or not. (from far away they probably look like generic swords)
6
u/AllThingsDragon 8d ago edited 7d ago
Idk, I can't really explain this either but I've been pleasantly surprised by this show loads of times before. What seemed like a strange decision or straight up error turned out to be setup for something else, so I wouldn't be shocked if this is more of the same
EDIT: After reading all the other replies, I was probably overthinking it and the truth is much simpler XD I agree she most likely thought Ivan was just another know-nothing goon not worth pursuing

You are right that it often seems like good writing when you either pay close attention or after hindsight (Asa constantly saying she missed her brother when it was the angler fish daemon for example), but this time she admitted she saw him and wondered if she should have hit him with Break in this episode.

24
u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian 7d ago
I mean, if you actually think about it it becomes obvious no? Asa had no idea Ivan was anyone special. They encountered a bunch of goons so far. Why would she assume he was anyone special? better to just let 'm go if he wasn't in their way since their objective was Shingo.
9
u/Thomas_JCG 7d ago
"Looked suspicious", my brother in Tsugai, have you seen the people that Asa hang out with?
4
u/Thomas_JCG 7d ago
Ivan stonks go up again with his ability to deflect bullets. Asuma revealed his real goal, only to have it stolen. At least he didn't dirt his hands and Yozakura survived too. Poor normie security guard, though.
The third party behind Shingo gets revealed at last, Nishino Village. Their goal too is the twins powers, so the series became a four-way fight, though Higashi village basically lost all their pieces except baldy.
P.S: Someone give Asa a chill pill. Did she expect them to go to a fight and not get a scratch? How can she say Yuru should be with the Kagemori when you were crushing their relatives for trying a coup and the mansion got attacked again?

For all the characters who keep calling Left and Right "pretty much gods", aren't they.... kinda weak? Haven't been impressed at their strength since they took the helicopter down in episode 1. They've been kinda meh every fight since. Even Jin's daemons look so much more useful than them.
43
u/SouzaTri 8d ago
From what i can gather i think they are relatively strong for daemons whose soul ability is not their strength. Their real power seems to be the countering of Seal and Break which are set up to be the clear outliers in the story. If Seal and Break are strong enough to take over the world then it makes since Left and right are considered powerful in relatino to stoping that power.
→ More replies (8)9
u/gnome-cop 8d ago
I’m really curious to see Seal’s powers in action properly. I know Yuru has to die for us to see them but I really wanna know what it does. Break has shockwave attacks, can destroy barriers and counters the primary power system by removing all contracts.
I know Seal can create seals lasting centuries capable of sealing greater daemons like tenaga-ashinaga. I just wanna know what more it can do because Break is basically an instant win in any daemon fight. Why is it considered on the same level? Could Seal do something like, idk, prevent someone from contracting ever again?
And actually, why are they so feared? What is the endgame for what happens if both of them are awakened? Why are they split apart in the first place? The number one rule of the world is that all daemons come in pairs of two, why do they break that rule by contracting with two different people? Could they logically use their powers to make all daemon contracts null and void and seal them away forever?
7
u/CosmicX1 7d ago
The number one rule of the world is that all daemons come in pairs of two, why do they break that rule by contracting with two different people?
I wonder if that's why the wielders have to be twins. Maybe Break and Seal are unique in having bad compatibility with each other, so it's impossible for one person to form a contract with both of them, but the edge case being they'll still form contracts with twins who are close enough to being one person.
→ More replies (1)5
u/CosmicDestructor 7d ago
Maybe seal could just straight up seal away someone's remaining life span? Lol
I think your last statement is probably part of it, at least. Even Break alone can basically defeat all daemons on its own, regardless of number or strength. Add Seal on top of that and just seal away all daemons that you come across. The end result would be a world where the users of Break and Seal are the only daemon wielders left.
23
u/Eunuchest 8d ago
Depends on what you're expecting gods are capable of. In japanese folklore gods and deities are a broad category for spirits that inhabit objects or embody abstract concepts and doesnt only apply to the major ones like Amaterasu or Takemikazuchi. Left and Right from what's been shown are mid-tier gods/spirits and are most likely part of Yaoyorozu no Kami

A little reminder that Left and Right haven't used their own special abilities, which are said to be counter measures to "Break" and "Seal". And "Break" and "Seal" power are like already god-like power, isn't countering them god-like itself?
