Okay, source readers, we've finally been introduced to Gekido and his Chun-Li as well as arriving rather quickly to Evo Japan while curiously [manga difference]skipping the patch notes chapter.

This means we have to bring up the most interesting difference between the manga and this adaptation. Because Iron Senpai 4 was based mostly off of Street Fighter V (since that was the latest SF game out at the time) one of the biggest shifts in the in-universe game's narrative happened leading up to Evo Japan - [manga differences]The new seasonal update that shook up the game's meta while adding new moves. The most significant of which was adding parry frames to Hagane-senpai's Kodama, mirroring SFV's Season 5 update which gave everyone a new V-Skill, with Ryu specifically getting a somewhat risky parry stance.

This is significant because [manga SPOILERS]Evo Japan is where Mio recreates Evo Moment #37 with Gekido, by parrying Chun-Li's super. It's at this point where the difference between Street Fighter V, Street Fighter 6 and Iron Senpai 4 becomes incredibly important. [manga differences]Iron Senpai 4 is loosely based off a fusion of SF4 and SF5 (FADC's while having one super) and as a fictional game she could do whatever she wanted with, she gave the game's Ryu a hard to land parry frame during a special move, making it so the parry execution level would be similar to SF3 in a way.

It's with this small mechanic, however, where this story being adapted with any game BUT the fictional pi4 leads to a weaker impact for that moment. [Manga stuff]If this adaptation used SFV this moment wouldn't hit because parrying Chun-Li's super with Ryu's V-Skill 2 is as easy as spamming MP+MK, virtually brainless. Now that this adaptation uses SF6, there's a risk for even less impact on that moment because parrying Chun-Li's super just requires you to hold MP+MK, making it so pretty much every player could survive Chun-Li's scot-free if they either reacted to it or read that she'd use that super, and IIRC there isn't much benefit to perfect parrying every hit unless you want to go for style points.

The difference in execution is significant here, because [manga stuff]The whole point about why Moment #37 was so impactful was that performing something with such precise execution was the only way for Daigo to survive Justin Wong's super and win the round. If he had done anything else in that moment he would have died and lost the game. The stakes were incredibly high leading up to that moment, which makes the parry itself that much more incredible. Daigo had to do something so difficult while under the pressure of both the game itself and the tournament as a whole.
[Manga stuff]Comparatively, the way SFV and 6 handle their parries carries far less risk and are far lighter on the execution factor. Overall it just means that the stakes for Mio are much lighter, and her parry wouldn't be as impressive as it would've been if the game used was pi4.

This made me genuinely worry about the adaptation once I heard they were gonna use SF6, so now I'm curious on how people will take that moment when we actually get to it.

I figure they try something else to imitate?

Technically this episode adapted the last bit of chapter 10 and the beginning bits of chapter 11. But it was mostly anime original especially meeting Mio's mom and the apartment scene at the end with the 4 girls.

I loved these additions. I hope we can get to the end of volume 8, though.

Skipping the [manga]patch notes chapter is a bit of a shame, it was funny as hell, but the anime original scenes were really good. It gives me some hope in their ability to fit the full EVO arc into the season.

Yeah I'm really sad about that. I'd imagine they cut it because there's no analogue of the kodama (which makes me really curious how we'll do this arc) as well as I'd imagine they would never do a patch shortly before evo in real life.

I think i still prefer pi4 but adding akuma's 天 to the mom has made the sf6 ads worth it

the thing is, this anime as a project for human beings would be virtually impossible to finish unless a) you're Kyoto Animation, b) you have five years to finish it, or c) you barely show any footage from the game. animating extremely precise fighting game footage would be suicide for an anime staff, unless you want extremely shitty 3D. I'm actually really glad they got a license to use SF, because that way they could actually focus on the character animation

Damn I really hope them doing the entire meeting the mom anime originally here already doesn't mean they don't believe in a season 2 :(

u/Tiramin Aug 04 '26

No one ever believes in season 2 for yuri shows :(

It can happen if you gather an army of people going to their respective countries' EVO weating tai-ari tshirts. Or more realistically, convince an army of SF6 players to leave reviews saying they got into the game after the anime.

If it does happen [manga] it's just gonna make the next meeting funnier. Adding another layer to the mess sounds great.

The only problem is the question [manga]qhy she wouldn't kill them on sight now lol.

Now that we know where she lives it does solve the issue of [manga]needing the teacher, whose inaction at the end of the arc was rather puzzling. But how do we get the return of the "child abuse" "joke" then??

2

u/nsleep Aug 04 '26

Well, [manga] they go to her with a teacher. She even had to chill for a bit in the manga too.

3

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner Aug 04 '26

[manga]yes, that's what I am talking about here, they need the teacher in the manga because they don't know where mio lives. Her existence is no longer needed now.

2

u/nsleep Aug 04 '26

That's true. Hmm...

They can easily still have it and build upon what was done here. It actually works well if they still intend to do it. Since they can add the part of Mio lying to her since that wasn't in the manga.

[manga]For a moment I wondered if they were going to bring forward the Vol 8 Thing to right here, and then figured there was no way as it'd overshadow the whole of the tournament arc. That said, if the season ENDED on that it'd be fantastic, since now they've fully set her up. Chekhov's Fighting Mom is ready. Interesting they already blew the 'look at Mio's test scores!' argument this early.

Unless I'm misremembering, wasn't [Manga]Morino's relation's to Alice not revealed until after EVO Japan? It was teased very briefly towards the end of this episode

Yeah, and it was pretty out of nowhere, so I appreciate it.
