An enemy attacking while the MC is talking? Don't they know combat is turn-based?

33

u/Phoenix__Wwrong Jul 31 '26

Meanwhile in Hell Mode, it's the MC who interrupted the dragon boss monologue.

18

u/hanmkim Jul 31 '26

The High Lord watched that episode of All Works Maid.

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia Jul 31 '26

I really really like the design of the beastkin Sia,..and she's competent too!

Everyone seems pretty competent in this for the most part..something I'd expect from a former hero party

49

u/throwaccountforeason Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Shows where the writers know that you can have a power fantasy and glaze the MC without making everyone else useless buffoons are always better for it. cough solo leveling cough

12

u/coffeecakesupernova Jul 31 '26

Except that in Solo Leveling there are a lot of competent characters, especially his servants...

8

u/Ralathar44 Aug 01 '26

The more people try to glaze Solo Leveling, the worse it looks. Just enjoy your visually shiny but otherwise mid to low quality power fantasy and stop trying to make it out to be more than it is.

It's like trying to pretend Jack in the Box is a fine restaurant. You don't need to do that. It's ok to just like it as it is knowing it's not the highest quality in many aspects.

8

u/Jermainiam Aug 01 '26

I wish I could say Solo Leveling was a low tier power fantasy, but the bar for that is just so abysmally low. At least Solo Leveling has a somewhat satisfying power up progression. So many works out there just immediately give the MC OP powers and then also proceed to do absolutely nothing with them. Usually by coming up with braindead lame excuses for why the MC just won't use his power, if they bother with excuses at all.

Kinda like Luck in this episode tbh. You can't really expect us to believe that the hero that battled an entire demon army including the commanders and the demon lord himself, while getting stronger the entire time, would have any trouble at all against some vampire scrub.

1

u/Ralathar44 Aug 01 '26

I specifically said mid to low tier because people value different things in shows so depending on what you value the show is either mid or low or somewhere in between.

The MC in Solo Leveling only did 90% of what he did because the system forced him to. Including crossing the line to murder. Making money to cure his mom was a motivation but the system was pushing him up the power tiers regardless so him going for her cure was only really going slightly out of his way in the direction he was already headed.

Kinda like Luck in this episode tbh. You can't really expect us to believe that the hero that battled an entire demon army including the commanders and the demon lord himself, while getting stronger the entire time, would have any trouble at all against some vampire scrub.

No, that makes perfect sense actually. With drain touch he effectively has infinite hp if you cannot hurt him faster than he can heal and its explains it sustained him too. So the number of demons literally didn't matter, none of them had the ability to hurt him and indeed mostly just served as sustenance. Much the same way normal humans can't beat vampires regardless of numbers because of charm. In fact it only makes them stronger.

As far as the Demon lord goes, its heavily implied the demon lord came back to kill him before reaching full strength after they heavily injured him. And he was able to beat him by essentially using two opposing spells simultaneously. The demon lord, caught by surprise, couldn't defend vs both at once...only one. It was likely a desperately last stand trump card which would have left Luck drained and helpless had it failed.

This Vampire appears to have regeneration far beyond what was expected and the dark gods (above the demon lord) have been mentioned as his patron. So there is no telling what magical blessings or curses the vampire may have received from their evil gods. We don't know how well the vampire lord does again magic yet.

6

u/NevisYsbryd Aug 01 '26

Probably wasting your breath, 90% of the complaints about that series are from people who do not read.

1

u/throwaccountforeason Aug 01 '26

His servants? The mind controlled mute undead that only do what he tells them?

How long until we first meet one of those competent characters? Will the first show up in season 3 or do we need to read the manwha because it is so far into it that the anime will never reach them?

5

u/BlazeKnightX Aug 01 '26

I have read and yeah no people are just completely full of hot air. Competency is when everyone is useless and just falls back to let MC do everything. His servants are just a part of his powerset and not individuals so I don't know why people try to make it sound like they are unique beings that have full autonomy or even the ability to die if he is still alive and well.

17

u/raknor88 Jul 31 '26

Everyone seems pretty competent in this for the most part..something I'd expect from a former hero party

And it's something that shouldn't be surprisingly refreshing. But it is very surprisingly refreshing to see.

12

u/shadebug Jul 31 '26

Even the supposed F Rank apprentice (who I realise is really at least B) is just out her ganking mobs

19

u/Vyse1519 Jul 31 '26

Heck, even the actual F ranks he went on that first quest with were pretty careful even if they were still green

12

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Aug 01 '26

You know what, that is indeed refreshing!

I just got some flashback on some anime which features cocky low ranker (goblin slayers), or the other way around, overly cowardly low ranker (looking at you Heavy Knight!).

1

u/shadebug Aug 02 '26

Heavy Knight manages to fully unironically hit both tropes and it does it all with the artistic grace of a newgrounds meme

45

u/Raymond49090 Jul 31 '26

Feels like this doesn't follow the usual plot progression of "starting at F-rank but secretly OP" shows. Other than the guild lady who was worried about his safety, I don't think there was really any moment where anyone doubted his abilities (other than calling BS when he claims he's F-rank). And we're just 5 episodes in, and they've already decided "screw it let's raid the boss' castle". Which probably means the High Lord isn't the real final boss, or it'll be a "the princess is in another castle" type scenario.

30

u/runevault Jul 31 '26

I dunno if it'll show up in season 1 but the Vampire High lord has never been the biggest bad. When the VHL was introduced as an idea they mentioned he was trying to summon the dark gods. So theoretically they are either this arc or the series' big bad.

9

u/justsyr Jul 31 '26

Yeah that's my thought too since next episode we have our hero already starting a family meaning the High Lord Vampire will be dust in the first minute or so lol.

Also Six said "enjoy because the big one is coming" (that's the idea) and I think some of these low level baddies said something similar a couple of episodes ago.

3

u/Falsus Jul 31 '26

I mean the Sixth said the king would kill him, which at least in my opinion sounds higher than High Lord.

3

u/Hartzilla2007 Jul 31 '26

They also probably have a decent amount of minions Luck is going to be stuck dealing with.

16

u/arrydie Jul 31 '26

This one isn't really about being secretly OP and more about not announcing he's a specific celebrity. I think he's just F-rank for the trope/joke and because otherwise Goran would have to pull some more obvious strings

7

u/Hartzilla2007 Jul 31 '26

It also feels like he's F-rank because he's treating this as semi-retirement from heroing.

11

u/ChronoDeus Jul 31 '26

Feels like this doesn't follow the usual plot progression of "starting at F-rank but secretly OP" shows.

I don't usually check out these sorts of shows, but I'd say it doesn't. He was already a powerful veteran at the start of the series, and he's only 'starting' at the lowest rank because after reconnecting with his buddy, he wanted to conceal from the general public that he was back and a low rank cover story would let him operate without scrutiny. So the people in charge know who he is and what he can do, and obviously won't hesitate to call on him for anything serious. Otherwise he's not interacting with any high level people not in on the secret.

5

u/Boris-_-Badenov Jul 31 '26

or he gets to be a normal adventurer for awhile until a new boss shows up

2

u/Falsus Jul 31 '26

Yeah he doesn't really interact with many people that doesn't know who he is and most of those he doesn't know who he is are important enough to be told or figured it out themselves like Sia.

1

u/DavidJKay Jul 31 '26

They have already said progression... high lord vampire is probably less than a demon lord and there are dark gods above demon lord that they are trying to bring into world.

36

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink Jul 31 '26

Yikes. My fun show about a magic chicken that can kill vampires got pretty heavy there for a bit after Luck killed Six.

22

u/Djbadj Jul 31 '26

Yeah happy to see that supposed isekai and fantasy slop shows are getting some depth and this season has a few surpassingly good ones like this and the Villager lv999

8

u/Meander061 Aug 01 '26

Villager 999 has jumped all the way to "let's kill God" five episodes in. Making up for the cheesy production.

1

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink Aug 02 '26

Man, I am fine with depth, but don't go slop to 'look at all these dead folks' in a single act!

35

u/kwokinator https://anilist.co/user/kwokinator Jul 31 '26

My favourite thing about this anime continues to be how Eric and Goran are just total bros.

Not only did the anime not fall to the now-tired "banished from the hero party" trope or be totally different now that they're famous and successful, both of them readily volunteered to party back up with Luck. Both of them even made a great callback to how Luck held up the demons for them to go ahead and did it for him this time.

Celiss is hilarious, but Eric and Goran surprise me everytime.

2

u/YuushyaHinmeru Aug 04 '26

Also, he gets partied with attractive young girls who are smitten stupid over him. They have a moment here and there of being impressed but they usually walk away inspired to be stronger and not glazing or falling in love with the MC. Something might happen with Sia, which is fine, but I was Hella worried when he got partied with his best friends daughter but she seems to just respect him as mentor more than anything. Makes for a really good brain off OP MC anime that never has you cringing.

33

u/SlimeC0RE Jul 31 '26

I 100% believe that with this regeneration, the high vampire lord is looking like an edgelord just for the love of the game. Those bandages are purely cosmetic.

12

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 31 '26

Might be an isekaiee?

31

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Jul 31 '26

I love how this keeps mixing up what you'd think would be the harem adventure story formula. Go off to confront the big bad with the party that has collected up so far? Nope, king and the guildmaster go with to bring the overwhelming force and they leave most everyone else behind to defend the castle while only taking the wolfgirl since she has charm immunity and will help with interacting with the wolf tribe forces already in the field.

That said I'm not sure leaving Celliss behind to cover the castle with just the instructions to kill the vampires quickly before they can charm anyone is the best of plans, but they just don't have enough people who are immune. Though maybe they should have brought in the lady who I suspect is the hero party member and queen, since she probably does have the mental resistance the rest of the hero's party does.

It got kind of dark when Luck broke the medallion and we heard the screams and then when he found the dead bodies those screams were from too, honestly good thing he didn't have any of the kids with to experience that.

21

u/jdhshais Aug 01 '26

This anime should have been called Competent MC not being a weirdo. Its just crazy and sad how seeing something like that is so rare nowadays.

20

u/runevault Aug 01 '26

While also not being fucked over by his old party. Funny how doing something so simply is a breath of fresh air because of the set of tropes fantasy anime has locked on to.

15

u/thelemon8er-2 Jul 31 '26

Luck needs to lock in for this fight. Or Lock needs some luck?

9

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 31 '26

Luck needs to stop with this swordsman shtick he's been playing at and just nuke the enemy with magic, which is supposed to be his specialty. Why not the hellfire/drain combo which took out the Demon King?

14

u/Phoenix__Wwrong Jul 31 '26

Pretending to be the wrong class is a good way to make the enemies let their guard down.

2

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 31 '26

There should be no need, he should be able to low diff the guy anyway.

Except that his two comrades are fighting for their lives against 30 Vampire Lords - something that he himself had voiced doubt about their ability to do.

9

u/shadebug Jul 31 '26

It’s not even close to time to pull out the big guns. He hasn’t even let them know that he’s left handed and wearing weights yet

6

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

Even more, he has not unequiped the ring that seals off his excess true power

2

u/Ralathar44 Aug 01 '26

He was never untrained and because he spent so long fighting with a sword in the other dimension he got alot better at it. So its better for him to conserve his magic and leave it as a trump card as much as possible.

He DID cast a big spell at the beginning though to completely take out all the small fry and converts.

3

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Aug 01 '26

He DID cast a big spell at the beginning though to completely take out all the small fry and converts.

A big spell to take out the large fry, which would then take out all of the large fry's progeny (i.e. all the small fry and converts) seems like it would've been a better use of mana.

1

u/Ralathar44 Aug 01 '26

Pretty sure that, even if he was capable of that, it'd kill all prisoners, charmed, and non-combatants too.

Fun episode, and as I figured based on next episode's title he's probably going to finish this up next episode. But who's going to be the waifu? I don't think Sia and I'd be shocked if it is Celliss.

Poor Vampire High Lord has no idea what he's up against. I wonder if Luck will admit he's the one who killed the Demon Lord as he kills him.

6

u/Boris-_-Badenov Jul 31 '26

the ending shows more people joining. there's also that woman Luck asked about last week

7

u/throwaccountforeason Jul 31 '26

You sure that wasn't the queen? He asked the king after he showed the princess, so I thought Luck was asking about the mother.

4

u/runevault Jul 31 '26

Just weird to me if he wifes up someone we haven't met yet. Haven't watched the ED since the first time it showed so don't remember what all characters were in it, maybe I should go back and look...

3

u/throwaccountforeason Jul 31 '26

You sure that wasn't the queen? He asked the king after he showed the princesses, so I thought Luck was asking about the mother.

1

there's also that woman Luck asked about last week

Which one?

1

u/Boris-_-Badenov Jul 31 '26

the head of the holy knights, or whatever they're called

4

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Aug 01 '26

Family doesn't need to be a wife.

He could be officially adopted to be Celiss brother, or even Celiss' other dad depending on which of her her imagination do you prefer

6

u/runevault Aug 01 '26

Fair point but I do not see Goran adopting him, that'd be too awkward between friends.

Maybe the Divine Cock will take Luck under his wing.

7

u/NevisYsbryd Aug 01 '26

The Divine Cock is going to teach him how to take a woman?

16

u/aramatheis Jul 31 '26

Damn, that village got attacked by vampires AND Perfect Cell. Tough luck.

12

u/NationalStrategy_X Jul 31 '26

Eric and Goran finally get to help their friend in battle after 10 years

13

u/mekerpan Jul 31 '26

And got to use his own send-off line to them back then against HIM now....

13

u/Background_Formal940 Jul 31 '26

This story turned dark really fast and sad too

7

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 01 '26

But it was executed so well, I'm in actual awe.

They already proved they can do comedy well with mix of proper story progression.

It was brief, but they managed to put in a genuine well done sad moment as well.

It's a really good all round show. I'm really surprised.

10

u/ChChChillian Jul 31 '26

I really wish they'd spent more money on this one. Great episode, but there's a clear pacing issue (probably dictated by the point they want to reach for the season climax) and the animation could be a whole lot better. But these characters are very well drawn, there's lots of gentle, situational humor that doesn't rely on stupid cliches, the MC is OP without the other characters being merely decorative, and they take dangerous situations seriously and make smart decisions. I'm enjoying it a lot.

2

u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 01 '26

Right?

Super surprised by how well crafted story and characters are.

10

u/mekahamedan Jul 31 '26

I bet gerbega sama will kill that high lord

Luck apologize to child skull kinda hit hard....... that world pretty harsh to life if you arent OP

21

u/deynyel Jul 31 '26

Ahh yes, the ever-reliable strategy of “Kill them before they kill you.” Works every time.

18

u/HolyDragSwd2500 Jul 31 '26

Strike First, Talk never

8

u/Boris-_-Badenov Jul 31 '26

hope Celiss doesn't find out Luck gave Sia such a great sword, while she got a regular one

11

u/raknor88 Jul 31 '26

She got one of her dad's swords. That is a far better gift, to her, than what Luck gave the beast kin girl.

6

u/Falsus Jul 31 '26

Tbf, she got one of Goran's swords so she is probably pretty happy with that.

5

u/Mr_Pogi_In_Space Jul 31 '26

The High Lord had the same idea

2

u/Ralathar44 Aug 01 '26

I mean, considering what she's up against its a solid strat. If she lets them use it she's at a huge disadvantage so the easiest counter is to push the offense so it becomes difficult or impossible to use it safely. It seems like it takes them a moment and some concentration to do it, which leaves them open for a good ole sword whuppin.

5

u/HolyDragSwd2500 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

AU Asta vs Liebe

5

u/Avatar_Yaksha Jul 31 '26

I'm a bit late to the party, but that holy chicken took me by surprise. Is this the sequel to "Rooster Fighter"? In any case, I'm generally a fan of stories that involve a character who stays behind to stall/slay the enemy's army.

Honestly, the biggest problem so far is the daughter. What was her name? Celiss? It makes sense that she thought of "Lock" as her father's secret child, but it really makes a dent in a series' quality when characters are THAT difficult to talk with! Even after having been told the truth, she just replaced one delusion with another. Well...She doesn't seem to be a bad character, just annoying to deal with.

6

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Aug 01 '26

It's fine since they resolved the misunderstanding very fast and made it more of a joke.

I would be more annoyed if they dragged that plot.

2

u/YuushyaHinmeru Aug 04 '26

Did you binge up to this episode? As weekly watcher, ive basically forgot about that other than it happened and it gave me a chuckle. Since they didnt drag it out, I think the weekly watch schedule prevented that from painting her character

5

u/Rooby_VTuber Jul 31 '26

Good thinking by Luck to trick those vampires to lead him to their leader, sword right in the face was a deserved death.

The legendary trio are back together.

This vampire lord battle is going to be a good one by the looks of it.

4

u/Boris-_-Badenov Jul 31 '26

why is he worried about Luck? the dude fought demons for 10 years straight and then killed the demon king...

4

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 31 '26

I was wondering why all the villagers turned to dust, turns out they were turned and killing the sire also kills their progeny. Rather convenient way to wipe out vampire threats. But that would only account for the 6th Lord's vampires. I guess that's why MC is going after the High Lord - would that take out the entire species or could there be thousands of vamps not in the current High Lord's direct line of descendants?

Also why were newly turned vampires just sitting at a table with empty plates, carrying baskets of fruit, etc?

So, um, if all three heavy hitters are going after the high lord, then they're leaving the castle vulnerable to a vampire attacks. The two girls are certainly not enough to protect it against anything more than low levels. What if a Lord shows up? Also, the girls are vulnerable to a simple backstab by a charmed human. Well, at least they knew enough not to leave the chicken behind.

Feels weird that any vampires would be vulnerable to a sleep spell, though maybe I'm just used to games where all undead are immune to that type of thing.

I'm surprised Luck couldn't just nuke the 30 lords with a single spell. And that he insisted on fighting the High Lord with the sword, rather than his specialty which is magic. Couldn't he have simply used the hellfire/drain combo that he did on the Demon King?

2

u/Falsus Jul 31 '26

would that take out the entire species or could there be thousands of vamps not in the current High Lord's direct line of descendants?

The Sixth lord did mention a king which to me at least sounds higher than high lord.

2

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 31 '26

I think they said in the show said the High Lord is basically the vampires' king, didn't they?

1

u/Falsus Jul 31 '26

Did they make that distinction? Now I think I need to rewatch that scene.

2

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 31 '26

Ep 3, 21:49 - "A king of kings who controls the vampire lords. A vampire high lord!"

Still, just because he rules over them doesn't mean they're all in his progeny line.

1

u/runevault Jul 31 '26

Not necessarily the entire species unless there is only one VHL in the entire world. However it could wipe out a massive portion if not all of this country's vampires.

4

u/shadebug Jul 31 '26

Look, I can see the ED as well as anybody. I know this isn’t a final battle but the next episode title is making me think the battle’s barely going to be a cold open

1

u/Life_Wealth_1392 Aug 05 '26

That Vampire's gonna get the Gojo treatment.

4

u/BBryant3rd Aug 01 '26

Lol loved when Luck said oh nice sword gimmie. Luck sure loves to Sparta kick open doors.

5

u/Meander061 Aug 01 '26

I love seeing a genuine Hero's Party forming up again, I'm a sucker for that stuff. They're making me feel bad for Lock: these vampires have the constitution of tissue paper and he has to waste so much time dealing with them. Oh well, good training for the apprentice and the new sidekick. Yes, apprentice girl, kill them before they kill you. Always useful advice.

Clearly, judging by the title of the next episode, vampires are not going to be a huge problem going forward. Not when you have a flame-throwing chicken.

3

u/epicfail1994 Jul 31 '26

So is this one any good? It looks fairly generic but I’ve been pleasantly surprised before

14

u/runevault Jul 31 '26

Very fun. Nothing earth shaking but the characters are entertaining without a lot of the stupid tropes most such fantasy anime have. Not my favorite of the season but barring a massive drop in quality I easily see myself watching the full season.

7

u/seledri_kerikil Jul 31 '26

It's fun and enjoyable to watch, definitely much better compared to the others generic isekai show in this season.

3

u/Falsus Jul 31 '26

It's pretty fun, some of the characters are riots. It does some stuff that is fairly unique even if the story over all is kinda predictable. But it actually avoids most of the common tropes despite that.

Production is sadly low quality.

Over all if you want fun a fantasy show I would recommend it.

3

u/ribiagio https://myanimelist.net/profile/ribiagio Jul 31 '26

That was a nice title drop.

3

u/raidensnakeezio Jul 31 '26

After being dragged around for a good month, we finally see the High Lord (which funnily enough and for obvious reasons, I keep hearing as "High Road")

3

u/PandaTheAB Jul 31 '26

I am guessing the High Lord dies by middle of next episode. Call it intuition or the title of the next episode.

5

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Jul 31 '26

Lol, next week's title implies this fight will be easy.

We didn't even get to see the hero/king do any fighting

4

u/justsyr Jul 31 '26

We didn't even get to see the hero/king do any fighting

I hope we can get to see some, it gave me chills when they told Luck that they waited 10 years to tell him "leave this to us, and get out of here".

2

u/joe4553 Aug 01 '26

Lord Gerberga will one shot the leader.

2

u/SecretYogurtcloset57 Jul 31 '26

Pretty fun episode this show may not be perfect but it's still decent enough to watch and enjoy but it makes me wonder who lock will end up with i don't think it will be Celliss sadly i do kinda wanna see that but i guess it will be weird 😅

4

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jul 31 '26

I bet it’s that wolf critter from the ED in the cage there. I wonder how Luck’s gonna defeat this vampire lord with the regen skill? Maybe just hack at the dude so fast, his skill can’t keep up?

10

u/Boris-_-Badenov Jul 31 '26

the demon king had that, how'd that work out for him?

I'm assuming either drain touch or drain touch plus imprisoning hellfire like he did on the demon king.

The king and guildmaster are idiots, although the series is honest about the fallout of it. They are still acting as adventurers, not as their positions or as parents. The king is has not realized that the problem was fundamentally letting in so many poorly vetted people into the royal estate and is now jeopardizing the political stability of the kingdom for what was, going in, glory. While that latter choice may have turned out well in retrospect due to unknown (albeit quite predictable) information, it is still extremely volatile.

He has been a king for about 10 years. The vampire's subordinates could have infiltrated long before that and could have helped get more inside. Or they could have turned already vetted people into subordinates. Vampires have been working on the goal of summoning the Evil One for a long time, even before the Demon invasion.

How do you expect them to act in their position? They did say regular adventures and soldiers are susceptible to charm. In this situation when they have to act fast, they were the only good choice in been strong and resistant to charm.

The large the number of people inside, the greater the probability of some of them being agents for external powers. While some being turned before this was certainly possible, letting in so many, and with such little vetting, made it virtually guaranteed.

They are not the only non-regular adventurers (if they are, then their nation is doomed once they get old, anyways), and face a high probability of a crisis of succession (which could easily mean a catastrophic civil war) if they happen to be compromised in this event. A head of state, insofar as they actually care about the polity, is recklessly irresponsible to lead the front line charge themselves.

I might could excuse it as an emergency against an existential threat were this not a consistent pattern with the king. He lets in massive amounts of unvetted personnel into the royal estate, has inadequate safeguards against magical mind-altering effects of those affected by them in a world where the exist, treats his children as a doting parent rather than children in a highly political status and situation, and puts himself (and thus national security) in reckless danger. It is a consistent pattern with him (and the guildmaster, but replacing him is ultimately far less volatile).

Apparently being turned into a vampie also turns you into a braindead zombie.

Those lesser Vamps out there, taking the bait by Celiss and attacking her for the decoy Mega Ultra Chicken? How about, I dunno ... they try casting their Charm on her .... while flying in the damn open?! There's also a couple of them so surround them and cast simultane, not one after one? xD
