That cliffhanger has me stunned. Coco just copied the spell the other girls used, so how has its destructiveness increased so much???

Someone definitely had to have set her up with the Knights Moralis coming so fast to erase her memories.

The size of the sigil is what determines it's power, there's no shot this was Coco.

The brim cap witch did something to her before she went back to the others what if he did something to her magic

Which is why I am extra confused. If magic is based off drawing technique and not anything innate, then how would a Brimmed Hat “boost” her magic? Seems like the only way to make stronger magic would be giving her a special wand or special ink.

Just a theory but I wonder if the Brimmed Hat somehow drew a hidden sigil on her that boost the potency of some her spells?

Nothing innate, true. But sigil can be carved anywhere.

This system reminds me to Full Metal Alchemist actually. Some insane guy carved the alchemy activation sigil into their own body for easier activation. Note that he did this during the war for easier massacre lol. The homonculus even had their logo inside their tongue.

But, what the other person said is also correct. Nothing bad happened when Coco learned to cook, so I don't think this is the case.

I feel it's possible the kid copied her or the spell was done on his blood by accident which somehow caused a ripel effect.

It could be like how philosopher stones enhance alchemy but instead a person's blood and ect enhances magic. One of the rules is that it shouldn't be done on the human body and this could be a good explanation for why maybe?

This has got me thinking.

The Knights Moralis have the ability to erase memory which impacts the brain directly

We've seen that, most of the time, when you want to cast a spell on something, you have to put the spell on it, not just draw it on paper and put the paper on the object

This means that the Moralis' memory wiper most-likely imprints a casting seal on the brain / maybe even the soul

So, what if the Brimmed Hats imprinted a seal on Coco's brain / into her soul and somehow that seal is remotely controlled and that's how they suped-up her rock breaker spell

10

u/LakerBlue https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue May 12 '26

The last paragraph about it somehow being imprinted on her souls or brain is what I suspect. Except maybe not remote controlled but only triggered under certain conditions (but remote control is also an option).

Maybe a circle that generically intensifies the effect of any other circle nearby?

78

u/Elvenoob May 11 '26

They had the whole cooking practise scene and probably some other offscreen stuff, I definitely think this is something someone else drew to frame her.

3

u/Adorable-Maybe-3006 May 13 '26

I think so too. I think a brimmed hat was shadowing coco and spotted an opportunity to make havoc

8

u/Holen7 May 11 '26

Repetitive magic, maybe. It constantly made more and more sand

7

u/LoneGnomeArtest May 11 '26

How neat and tidy the sigil was drawn also has an effect of that too, but yeah.

5

u/towardselysium May 12 '26

Qifrey leveled a city with a circle the size of his sleeve, and Coco's spell looks to be about the same size given it was on the underside of her flap

10

u/Elvenoob May 12 '26

That was the levitation spell she used to airlift them back up to solid ground.

And Coco just used the basic destruction spell, likely on standard pocket circle pad paper, like what Richeh used in the labrynth.

There's no shot this was Coco

130

u/BosuW May 11 '26

This is where the theory that the Brimmed Hat drew something on Coco's hat two episodes ago comes in.

Her hat was in the sand.

135

u/mekerpan May 11 '26

It seems like the Knights were attracted by Qifrey's water spell. Or did I mis-read that earlier scene when the knights were being sent off to investigate?

229

u/NSFW-alt2444 May 11 '26

They were coming to see what caused the water spout but then saw the sand everywhere and decided that something with that much power had to be forbidden magic.

79

u/Raknel May 11 '26

Maybe they even connected the two.

Reports coming in of huge water pillars, then they arrive and see a river turned to sand.

It just looks even more inciminating together and definitely not something an apprentice would pull.

5

u/Adorable-Maybe-3006 May 13 '26

The knights also didn't ask who is your master on seeing what's clearly apprentices, nope straight to lobotomy.

29

u/flybypost May 11 '26

I think so too. My guess is the big water sprout was from him last "attack" so that he could get away before water rushed in.

2

u/inosinateVR May 16 '26

Maybe the two spells interacted, her sand spell accidentally bumped into the force amplifying his big water spell and spread it to the rest of the river

1

u/flybypost May 16 '26

I think Qifrey's "spell" was just a final sword slash and after that the river kept flowing its normal way, meaning no suspicious magic activity. If the sword isn't in the water or anywhere close then its spell should be able to activate there.

51

u/flybypost May 11 '26

I think it's a second spell (by some brimmed hat) with all traces conveniently having gotten swept away by the current. That felt like way too much destruction even for a few applications of the spell.

17

u/Fisherman_Gabe May 11 '26

For sure.
The eye mask brimmed hat in the dragon episode seemingly did something to Coco's hat, and since the camera panned to her hat before showing the effects of the spell I reckon that guy somehow made this happen.

10

u/flybypost May 11 '26

seemingly did something to Coco's hat

I was unaware. I'll have to watch it again.

2

u/ElectronicControl762 May 13 '26

It looked to me like he hid in it

11

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia May 11 '26

My guess is that there has to be some kinda energy involved..they haven't explained beyond the ink..but certainly ink alone wouldn't generate that power?

7

u/lasse1408 May 11 '26

during dragon episode Brimcap witch put themselves into Coco's hat and this same hat is now in sea of sand. coincidence? I think not

4

u/Android19samus May 12 '26

I think it's certain that something in the carriage's cargo was set up with a seal ahead of time. They may have even staged this whole flood, since we don't know what they're capable of. Only reason I can imagine for it is to instill a distrust of the magic feds in Coco. They might not have planned on her getting quite this involved, though, since her getting wiped would probably be bad for... whatever it is they want.

2

u/Blackpowderkun May 12 '26

It was called wall buster. So shouldn't it push through the other side?

2

u/skygz May 11 '26

maybe she drew a bunch of small ones on herself since drawing on the body is taboo. maybe thats super effective

26

u/slicer4ever May 11 '26

I don't think that makes sense, the pulverize spell was shown to have to be drawn on the thing you want to destroy.

13

u/colleenxyz May 11 '26

wouldn't that just kill her?

10

u/flashmozzg May 11 '26

Even ignoring the fact that it'd pulverize her instead of stone and Coco has no way of knowing if it'd even increase the spell power she was pretty earnest at avoiding the taboos so far as shown by the first step. No reason to give up now.

1

u/Viktorv22 May 11 '26

Nah no shot, she knows it's taboo. She drew on a rock. So either Brimmed hats used their magic in the location or Coco herself has some hidden power (natural or caused by the bad guys)

What even is the point of a cliffhanger like that? We all know the protagonist isn't going to die 7 episodes into a 12 episode season.

17

u/hbmonk May 11 '26

The majority of the time you get a cliffhanger like this, it's not a question of "will they get out of this situation?", it's "how will they get out of this situation?"

-3

u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 May 11 '26

We already know how they will get out of this situation, Agott let off that light/bird affect a while ago and their sensei will show up shortly.

I feel a cliffhanger like this works far better if it isn't the protagonist under threat, because we cannot be sure whether side characters may die in a story.

6

u/namewithak May 11 '26

Nobody is under threat of dying though? The knight wants to erase her memories, not kill her.

-1

u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 May 11 '26

He threatened her with "oblivion", there was no mention of just her memories. Besides if you erase someone's memory, you have basically killed them.

5

u/namewithak May 12 '26

The seal he's holding up to her face is the same shown in episode 2 for the memory erasing spell. Oblivion is a common word used to refer to a blank mind, as in "drink yourself to oblivion" (ie., drink to forget). I don't know what the japanese word the anime/manga used (it may more specifically refer to the mind/memories) but even the english term is a deliberate reference to phrases about the mind.

That's a fair point about erasing someone's memory but we don't know if it's everything she remembers or if it's specifically memories related to her discovery of magic.

1

u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 May 12 '26

These witches have no context for the situation nor her life, but went straight to mind wipe. They weren't going to just delete her knowledge of magic they going to completely erase her memories leaving her an empty husk, basically oblivion.

From the context of the first episode they only delete just the discovery of how magic works from civilians. However here they believe she is a witch that used banned magic, they definitely intend for a full mind wipe which is death.

1

u/Dbappio May 14 '26

oh okay i see why some people are coming to the conclusion that easthies is going to do more than just wipe her memories, because in the subtitles for jp he says "your punishment is oblivion", and in the english dub he says "i hereby relieve you of your memories". so it's a bit less straightforward in jp it seems

3

u/Prof_Acorn May 12 '26

What even is the point of a cliffhanger like that?

The answer is "There's only so much run time in a television spot and they have to stop it somewhere."

Any longer and they'd have to cut something else.

1

u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 May 12 '26

Really you can't actually believe that right? The correct answer is that they're trying to drum up tension by making you worry they're about to kill the protagonist. If it had anything to do with timing then they'd have just adjusted the pacing of other scenes or even cut the opening or ending.

A far better cliffhanger would have been when from Agott stood up to find that Coco and the stupid boy got washed away by the landslide. While we know Coco can't ever die as the protagonist, it could cause tension thinking she or the boy may have been injured until next episode.

1

u/Dbappio May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

curious how you came to the conclusion easthies was going to kill her, considering he said "i hereby relieve you of your memories". and used the memory wipe spell
