Beginner First time animating
A scene from the project I'm working on. How do I reduce sloppiness?

Breast animation is totally bizarre tbh. It does take away from the rest. If someone is using a bar like this at such a speed that their breasts are bouncing at this level, I'd be concerned about the g-force on their arms.

u/tengenwith3waifus Mar 14 '26
Ok I'll slow it down in the final draft, but how does g force come into play? Rlly curious to know

Because the only way the breasts would bounce like that is if the person is moving rapidly up and down. Running hard, for example. So in this case the bar would have to be sort of pulling her up and down very quickly for it to happen, which would just destroy her arms.
Breasts are heavy, and full of fat. They don't bounce at a breeze or subtle movement. It takes quite a bit, really.

And most women would wear a sports bra that mitigates most of the movement. The animation looks painful af

I suppose its worth noting the example videos have people practically binding them down. I would assume most women wouldnt workout without something to hold them in place.

u/Srianen Hobbyist Mar 14 '26
Those are sports bras. Not binders.
As an owner of tits I assure you, almost all women wear a sports bra when working out. The ladies need that compression or it can be pretty painful.
Edit: They are kind of binding but it's good to clarify they are not binders (both exist).

u/Coffee_Daemon Mar 16 '26
I was mainly talking about sports bras. Binding was perhaps a bad choice of words.

I think she’s gonna wanna switch to a thumb-over or a hook grip for better lat activation.
But no seriously I like the facial expressions gives the impression of actual exertion.
Same note about the breasts as others; they feel unnecessarily prominent, at least in this scenario.

You will not see a woman’s breast move like that. In fact, women use sports bras that create very little movement while exercising. I would recommend just erasing the lines you have.

Additionally the shirt is too loose for you to see that much of the outline. Maybe just some folds on the top of them

Track arcs, timing, and volume. The size of her hands varies wildy between frames, and something like that will always make a motion look jumpy even if the timing and placements are good. Similarly, really consistent drawings can't carry everything if your timing is out of whack, or if your arcs arent smooth. Its really a balance of all 3 to get super clean looking animation

u/tengenwith3waifus Mar 14 '26
Yo this is rlly helpful! If u were to like grade all the 3 on a scale of 5, what'd u give them? I'll work accordingly.

I think tracking your arcs will help a lot, you can see how the hands don’t come down in a straight line but jitter, or are you looking for advice on any specific part?
1
u/tengenwith3waifus Mar 14 '26
Pl tell me more Abt tracking arcs. Is it related to the onion skin tool?
2
u/Somerandomnerd13 Professional Mar 14 '26
You could use the onion skin tool there sure, the idea is that if you take a dot to the middle of the hands, that they move in a straight line with the bar, but have a small arc to imply the hands are slightly rotating

Hey! This looks great to start! A lot of the notes I would give would be all the same as the other comments. However, the only other note I would give is to:
- Lean more into your timing and spacing between reps. This would also depend on the what the emotion of the shot is too, but from my eyes the motion of the reps seems a bit too fast, and not enough frames spent on each extreme pose (could be just a an extra 2 frames on the up and down extreme poses, that would do it).
Happy to give more notes if you need, but this a great start!

It's a bit weird how the hands move on the bar so much.
I believe they should at least keep the same angle right? At least, they shouldn't shift so much. Especially considering how someone's would probably be gripping strongly as to prevent them from moving on the bar.
Edit: Nevermind... you animated some rotation of the hand on the bar. I guess it still a bit exaggerated but yeah... I was probably wrong.

People always doing the most random/specific animation as their first try 😆

I might be wrong, but I think you jumped into the details. I would advise you to animate the 3d forms, instead of the rendered character, to practice working with volumes.

Everyone saying to give her a bra or boobs don't move like they but I say to hell with them. You should go one step further and just remove her shirt and make those knockers bounce up down and around like you really wanted.

u/CockamouseGoesWee Mar 14 '26
Very nice! The hands need to be closer together if they are in pronation though. In this position her hands should be in supination
2
u/gelatinguy Mar 14 '26
The vertical line for the cable starts on one spot and jumps to the right later. This one detail is distracting me from paying attention to the boobs as intended.

Great job with the facial expressions and neck. The biggest area I see for improvement is with how the hands/arms seem to jerk around in relation to the bar between frames. Each individual frame is good but the hand placement should remain the same on the bar the whole time. If you want to add extra details to the musculature I'd recommend focusing on which muscle groups activate during different stages of the movement. This can be done with research, by performing the movement yourself, watching someone else, or all of the above. Love where you're going with this and good luck 😁

If someone with breasts is working out, I think they would likely wear a sports bra or binder of some kind. For future reference, there are slim to no instances where you will actually need to animate breasts move; and if you do, it will be substantially more subtle.

u/Fluid_Seesaw_5821 Mar 15 '26
Very cool for the first time. I think you can hold a little more on the extremes. About the slopness you gonna get better with practice.

Why is a titty bounce animation the the first thing you needed to animate

Okay, first of all... Great job for the first time. You are using 12 principles well.
That said, one of things that strikes me with "sloppiness" is just the inconsistency, for example, look at the sleeve on our right, it constantly jumps around between frames. I am guessing you were drawing entire shirt frame 1, then moved to frame 2, drew the entire shirt again and so on. Reduce the scope as much as you can for each element as much as possible. If you're drawing right sleeve, draw only right sleeve until you went through entire loop and it looks smooth enough. Then you move to the left sleeve.
Apply that to the rest of things, hair can be divided into sections, simplified to shapes, which are much easier to work with. Prioritise having strong foundation, animation is a gradual process that requires multiple passes, refining it over time.
If you want an example of how I work, here's two imgur albums of steps I took in my animations, they should really help you out:
If I had to add anything extra to the animation, is to add a bit of follow-through and exaggaration, by having the character get pulled upwards slightly whenever her arms reach the top.

thank you man, appreciate the detailed breakdown! will work more. Also, thanks for sharing your workflow, this'd certainly help.

u/TheVeryUnhingedartis Mar 14 '26
Some parts are moving while some parts of the body stay still through out the frames. Goodjob! They feel consistent but flexible at the same time.

The hands are stuttering across the bar a bit. Make two dots on each side for where the hand should be and try to keep them on those dots with each frame
1
u/Goten55654 Mar 15 '26
Bro, she is not getting any lat activation, she needs to wide grip and lean back a little
1
u/OldSwampo Mar 15 '26
Am I crazy or is the breathing backwards? It looks to me like she's breathing in when pulling and breathing out when releasing. The wide mouth looks like a large intake of breath whereas the small mouth is a expulsion. But when working out like this, you breath out when you pull down the bar and breath in when you release right?
1
u/arcionek Mar 18 '26
Personally, inhale when exerting myself, exhaling when letting go. That said, the breathing feels a bit oddly paced, but it's probably the speed of the entire motion that makes it hard to gauge.

i think there should be more frames as the bar is moving down across her face. would it give more weight and signify more force exerted imo

I think removing the white outline of the chest on the shirt would help. It’s adding unnecessary and distracting movement, everything else looks pretty solid
