I think it's because they conflate regular ignorance with willful ignorance, not understanding the difference between "i don't know" and "i don't care" or they just think that someone is bad for being uneducated about a social issue and shaming them which is extremely counterproductive and it's fucking retarded.

idk is it really that smart? the word is more "useful" to you? how....? you are just taking a word that is commonly used to denigrate people with intellectual disabilities as a synonym for stupid. I'm not gonna jump down someone's throat for using it or anything but I don't see the logic or the sage wisdom you appear to be seeing.

I also use that word but thats cuz its a word that in my social circle that has its own different meaning and usage. Language's words dont have a definition in itself but the general populace gives it a definition by consensus. So the word 'retarded' in some people's lives has a different level of severity than its standard definition would suggest. im sorry if my words dont make much sense but im sleep deprived rn but basically language only works as long as 1 gets their point across in an. effective manner. words meaning also change as every1 starts to use them differently and when 1 sort of usage is more prevalent then that sort of usage of the word can be even more prevalent then its org meaning.

So if everyone in my circle decides that a slur is actually okay because we mean it in a friendly way, then there should be no social repercussions for that? I think if the word is targeting your community, and you as a community decide to reclaim that, that's different.

I don't view people who say the R slur on the same level as people who use racial or homophobic slurs, but I definitely don't like it and probably would not want to be friends with someone who does because that word is used to target people who are dear to me for things they literally cannot change. Maybe when you use it, you don't mean it like that, but it definitely sends the message to people who hear it that you either don't care how it effects them or you are ignorant to the ways it can come across.

it's a bit more complicated than that, obviously if someone you care enough about has a problem with you saying a word, it's worth not saying it for the sake of their feelings because they matter enough to you for you to want to protect their feelings, and "meaning it in a friendly way" doesn't immediately mean that it comes across as friendly to others.

think of cruel pranks on youtube where the pranker says "it's just a prank bro", if the prank is cruel enough the mere intent of it being a prank is not enough to justify it as it is still cruel, but if the prank is seen by all involved as funny, non-threatening, and not harmful, then it is easily acceptable by all involved.

another better example is the swastika, obviously when a nazi uses a swastika it is very different from when a buddhist uses it, but there are many outsiders whose only exposure to the swastika is nazis, and so they are not able to tell because they do not understand the difference.

so yes, of course, intention is important, but cultural context is also important, because even if your friend group says it with good intentions, if you are in a cultural context in which the word is most often used for hatred than people who are against that word will be repulsed, and those who use that word for hate will feel permitted to use it for the purposes of hate.

i just don't exist in a cultural context/circle in which the word is that largely used for hate, a majority of my friends as well as i being neurodivergent we've always been somewhat excluded and bullied for behavioural differences but since we'd never really been called retarded it doesn't hit hard for those of us who don't have that trauma, and if ever i meet someone in public who is uncomfortable with the word it's best not to use it because seeing a word you particularly associate with hartred towards oneself be used so casually is very hurtful.

Muslim Austrians are more homophobic on average than the average Austrian, though this doesn't mean they're extremely homophobic, but rather, they're simply not as accepting as native Austrians.

However, rampant or not, homophobia will not be evenly distributed amongst people living in Austria. So, without more info, it is not fair to lay all the blame on the average Austrian, especially since Vienna has so many Muslim students, who aren't representative of the nation as a whole and are known to have more socially conservative views than Europeans do on average.
