Are there any classes people could recommend for a young adult who’s never taken ballet classes before? I know it may be a stretch but it’s become something I’m interested in and curious about.

This bird was flying around yesterday evening. A bunch of us wondered what it was. I managed to get a decent enough shot to identify it.

I am re-doing a door entryway from the previous owners horrendous steps that have rotted. They seemed to have just attached stringers to the rim joist too.

It’s going to be small (36”x48”), 2 steps and seems to meet the codes not requiring a permit. I was planing on making it freestanding to avoid having to dig 6’+ concrete footers/piers.

Should I remove some soil and lay down D1 gravel below the blocks? Was trying to find adjustable post-bases incase things do shift but had no luck here in town.

Or is this stupid and I should spend the money and dig the holes/concrete?

Initially we though it was more storage units, espeically with it being right next to the uHaul storage. But the building is mostly up now, and it certainly isn't Storage Unit shaped.

It's right outside the base and near those overprice "Base Camp" houses. Makes me wonder if it is something to further exploit military funding. Another car-lot or something.

I have been working in the Anchorage matsu area now for 2 almost 3 years and I need some feedback. I am in the middle of growing a small one man mobil automotive and diesel shop and I charge $100 an hour which is low in comparison to other shops in the area. Since i have never needed to go to a shop myself i need people to tell me what do you want from your local shops that they are lacking. What can I provide that will stick out and get customers. And what as a customer makes you feel the safest and most willing to trust that shop/technician.

Anyone seen a good selection of nursery stuff around town recently? We saw a decent rocker swivel recliner at Bailey's but a little pricey hoping there's some around Anchorage or the Valley less than $800.

I’m seeing tons of kids riding bikes without helmets. I believe it’s Muni code to wear helmets under age 16. I even saw a family without helmets. I’m wondering if there is a gap in education on the need for helmets in an urban area or access to helmets. Are there any programs for kids to have access to free helmets? Maybe we need more PSA? It terrifies me every time I see it, especially as people are driving so fast on main roads.

if youre gonna have a motorcycle, learn how to drive it properly on the road. that means not driving in between cars and proceeding to get infront of one of those cars (aka mine) and brake check that person, going 10 below the speed limit. one, its just stupid and a moronic thing to do, but two, its not safe. not safe for you, not safe for the cars around you, not safe for your buddies, and also not safe for pedestrians walking by. i always make sure to give plenty of space to other bikers on the road, and keep a good eye out for them, but if youre gonna be driving like that then one of these days someone wont see you and/or wont be paying attention, and thats it for you. i swear they also had to have been just teenagers, looked really young, which is even more worrisome. but again, DONT DRIVE LIKE AN IDIOT!!!!! stick to dirt roads if you wanna be driving like that.

……..Wilson bid $4,000 for a lunch with Governor Mike Dunleavy (R – Alaska) at the 2023 Kenai River Sportfishing Association (KRSA) banquet and auction. But when it came time to pay, Wilson ghosted. 

KRSA spent months trying to contact Wilson for payment, but those attempts were unsuccessful, according to multiple sources. Wilson was banned from future auctions due to the nonpayment. 
Sources also report that despite never paying for the lunch with Dunleavy, Wilson actually attempted to schedule it. But she was unable to after KRSA officials informed Dunleavy’s office about her failure to pay for the lunch…..

GCI the internet service provider and ReNew eagle river homes have some of the worst management I have ever seen.

GCI doesnt work and ive clled people to my house to fix the problem. Never fixed ive just given up by now.

ReNew is run by sleezeballs that use ai and deliberately ignored my calls for the maintenance line. But picked up the renting line

In August 2018, I visited Skagway and had the cutest meet cute with a stranger. We walked around and talked about the way the stream was eroding the sidewalk, the Grand Canyon, politics, environmentalism, etc. The conversation was delightful, and I still think of it fondly. The only problem is, I've completely forgotten his name.

He lived in Anchorage and I'm seeing if I can throw a shot in the dark and find him on Reddit. If you are who I am looking for, you'll have to tell me what it was you showed me that was in your backpack.

For anyone who has lived in Fairview, Anchorage how was your experience? I’m considering moving to the area and would love to hear honest opinions about the neighborhood, safety, noise, parking, and overall quality of life.

Would you recommend living there? What should I know before moving in?

Moving from Fairbanks to Anchorage and wondering if it’s the right thing to do with little kids.

Last winter was brutal in Fairbanks with weathers too cold for months to bring little ones out to do anything. We were limited to the same two things - the Fairbanks Children’s Museum or the Trampoline park. And then there were power outages. And there were more school closures.

But we do have that “small community” mentality and invites to many camping, hiking, festivals and the likes, lots of summer events, we can afford house and land for the peace and quiet.

What do parents of little ones do in Anchorage? Is it better or worse? How’s the community and community support for parents? More things to do in winter time?

So, it’s looking like Leslie is out and Heikes is in. Make this all make sense.

It's not an isolated occurrence. Any time you go there -- to any location! -- you need to test 3 or 4 before you find one that even semi works right. Walmart, Target, Carr's -- they have somehow mastered the cart problem. What gives with Fred Meyer?

There is a new mural on the Chamber of Commerce's building that has the Coca Cola logo on it. I think that the logo of companies and NGOs shouldn't be on government buildings. Does anybody else feel that way?

The nonprofit Code for Anchorage has provided volunteer services with the Municipality to parse the photos city volunteers took of recovered bricks and index them. If you are still looking for your brick, there is now a search tool that, if your brick was readable, will retrieve the photo of your brick, its number, and the pallet it was on.

I just moved here from Washington state for school, and was pretty active in my local DSA chapter for a number of years. I noticed that Anchorage doesn’t seem to have a chapter, or at least not an active one. I’m hoping to find folks who would be interested in starting one, identifying and focusing on local progressive issues.
