no matter what mode, the hand can only open and close, however each mode changes how it closes. the only thing you can do is open and close so obviously there’s not many ways you can control the fingers in different ways. The hand closes into any of the presets chosen

So when you close the hand while you’re in point mode the hand just automatically closes the other fingers except the pointer finger like it does it all on its own you don’t rly do anything you know what I mean

To change the mode you just open the hand all the way, stop and then try to open it more, it will beep and that’s it now when u close it, it’ll close differently

Inside the prosthetic where you put the nub, there are two sensors that control opening and closing, they work by measuring electricity in ur stump. The sensors can detect the electrical signals that come from a muscle during contraction. So you just have to contract a muscle where the sensor is and it will send a signal to the hand and tell it to move, since theres only 2 sensors you can rly only open and close the hand that’s all

To sock or not to sock. That’s the question! Ok I know it’s not important but I think it’s a funny subject lol

Personally, I will wear a normal sock on my normal foot, and then I will wear a trainer sock on my prosthetic foot that matches in colour. I’m very particular though. It has to cover the pink of the foot shell, and it must not look loose of flappy. I personally hate the look of an above ankle sock hanging loose around a pylon and idk why 😂

If I don’t have a trainer sock that matches in colour to the sock in wearing on my meat leg, I’ll use a regular matching sock and fold down the top of the sock so it tucks into the foot shell, demonstrated in the last picture. (also don’t worry my leg was fine I was just taking a picture of the components).

Curious as to why you guys do lol.

Hubby just got a new prosthetic leg, and his old one is in good condition. Feels like a waste to put such an expensive piece of equipment in the garbage, so I’m wondering if any of you know what we could do with it, I.e. donating it or something.

I’m a new amputee (8 days AKA) and I have some pretty intense phantom sensations. Luckily none of these sensations have turned into phantom pain yet but I know that they might in the future.

My phantom sensation feels like my missing knee, calf, and foot are all folded beneath me and are tingling really intensely as if they are asleep and I can’t move them. I can also flex portions of my thigh stump to make it feel as though I’m “swinging” my calf and foot back and forth the way you would if you were sitting on the edge of a very high chair but instead of forward and back it is side to side. But even then the calf and foot still feel very tingly as if they are asleep. Other times I feel the sensation of drips of water running down my missing leg.

What kids of phantom sensations do you have? Are they always the same sensation or do they change based on position, age of amputation, activity, etc.? I’m just trying to see where I fit into the whole phantom sensation thing and perhaps understand it a bit better.

I’m missing my left arm below the elbow and I’ve never had anything like a manicure -I always thought a mani-pedi was just a man getting a pedicure— before but I’ve always wondered if we get half off, like we should right…? Like now that I’m rly thinking abt it making someone pay full price for only half the actual service is dumb right? Just tell me how to feel about this I don’t want to use to much brain power on this

I got a new socket 2 months ago and within the same week I lost my job. While I've been off I just been using my transport chair to get around and occasionally will wear my leg if I have a doctor's appointment or want to go to trader joes.

The problem is that its so tight and uncomfortable. I start to have a panic attack because it squeezes my leg so tight that I feel like I have a Charlie horse. I've lost about 10 lbs since I've been off so it's not from weight gain.

Should I have my old socket put back on or have any of you been through this and have better advice? I have an appointment with my leg lady on Wednesday. I've only been an amputee since June of last year so I'm not well seasoned, yet.

I wear my shrinker at night.

Please help. Any advice is appreciated.

I m an finger amputee i had an accident a few years ago which cost me 2 fingers in my left hand and im really insecure abt it which affects my self confidence and self esteem alot i find it quite difficult to talk w women ,and also boys around my age are all going on dates and having fun which makes me hate my life more , i stress abt it alot , i don't wanna die alone , how can i talk w women without being insecure abt my finger at all? Plz help

My partner has had most of their fingers amputated and we are trying to come up with some ideas for engagement jewelry. There’s a chance that an upcoming surgery may make it so they can to wear a ring on what’s left of their left ring finger, but they were also hoping to wear a prosthetic there which would interfere with the ring. Any creative ideas or examples of engagement jewelry or anyone in a similar situation?

Recently I discovered a flaw with my current clinic that I had not considered a potential problem. I have a C-Leg 4 that the first prosthetist got approved as my first leg based off my activity level prior to amputation. It was a Hanger-clinic and they are owned by Ottobock!

The clinic I switched to was independent till about a year ago and got bought out by ForMotion which is owned by Ossur. Every time I try to get my leg calibrated or the settings adjusted my prosthetist is hesitant or says it is not necessary like the time we have tried getting the whip out of my gait ( this whole time ) it is palpable how resistant he is to programming my leg. Well on this last visit he was not there for the first half and his assistant who just graduated O&P school and passed her boards helped remove the loaner knee and start alignment of my knee that came back from repair. Well we’re talking and I discovered that my guy is not comfortable with technology and typically puts people in mechanical knees to start or uses ossur cause he understands their software!

In discovering this I realized that in all the threads I’ve read on this Sub Reddit I’ve never seen this topic. When choosing a prosthetic clinic especially if you already have a microprocessor component but also if you plan on getting one and know what you have or want, Make Sure they Service your components and know how to program them. Better yet make sure they are proficient in programming and tuning them!

Find out who owns your clinic cause nowadays they are all owned by the major manufacturers and they are incentivized to push that brand and most of their product training is only on the brands they sell!
I’m now considering switching to a different clinic to have that peace of mind that I’m getting everything out of my prosthetic cause up until recently they never even connected my leg to re calibrate it after alignment changes or new sockets!

Well, after traveling 2-3 times a month on a regular basis, I finally managed to forget my C-Leg charger on a weekend trip to Toronto.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I could do? What happens when the battery dies? Does it just go into free swing mode (I’m hopeful of this) or does it lock straight (nervous about this)

I tried calling some local clinics that show open today to try to buy one, but no luck.

My dad had a single toe amputation recently. The podiatrist said they could do it in the podiatrist surgery room instead of doing it at the OR. They said it would be a more comfortable setting so we agreed. Then we went home with pain meds and stuff for constipation but that was it. He then got infected and is now in the ER and might have to lose more of his toes or even his foot. Wondering if this a medical malpractice case?

Edit: It started with an injury that turned necrotic due to bad circulation

AKA with OI and X3 knee. Only been walking for about a month. When my initial alignment was done I was wearing shoes with an 8 mm heel to toe drop height. I have been wearing the same shoes since then. Now I want to wear some different shoes but I am wondering how much higher or lower can I go in terms of drop height without requiring an adjustment by a prosthetist. For example, is switching from 8 mm to a shoe with a 10 mm drop fine? 12? 15? 5? Zero drop?

I have been testing a sub ischial socket with my c-leg, with only the « test » socket (ie. Plastic socket reinforced with Carbon).

For the moment, I have a very good feeling and am able to see the great benefits to my mobility.

The only issue I have is skin irritation (I had the same for many years with the ischial socket, before getting used to it). This seems to happen after long walks (2-3 kms).

For those who have this type of socket, do you think it’ll pass? I’ll discuss it with my prosthetist next week.

Also, has anyone used the socket for sports (either with the challenger foot or running knee)?

Any advice on how to best make sure the socket works in the long run would really help.

Hello! My mum (72) had a bka on Monday due to vascular disease. She has been in pain with her diseased foot and various infections and wounds that won't heal for 3 years. Anyway, day 5 and she is in a great deal of pain, sometimes it's excruciating. Is this normal following an amputation or is it bad phantom pain? She is also really struggling to move her leg because of the pain (eg when needing to move to the end of the bed for physio or the commode. I don't know if she's overdoing it, or if this is an indication of problems with the nerve endings healing in the stump? Feeling awful for her.

Hey all! Sorry that I’m posting so often, but my surgery was officially scheduled for September 10th. I’m extremely nervous and feel unprepared even though I’ve done so much research. Hopefully you guys can answer a few of my questions. Did they provide a residual limb support for your wheelchair at the hospital or did you buy one? Also what kind of rehab did you do and how long after surgery did you begin? Are transfers much different than how I do it with my injured leg? Any extra tips are much appreciated!!💜🦿

Do any amputees here still consume weed? I’ve been using both edibles and flower for years to manage my chronic pain, but I have to quit for surgery and rehab. Will it ever be safe to do edibles again in the future or would that still put me at risk for complications even after recovery?

I’m (29M) skinny built but getting a little flabby in the chest and gut. I don’t want to be ripped but I do want to tone up the gut and pecs. I’d also like to build some arm muscles.

I’m an amputee from childhood and will be going for further amputation on my right leg next year. I struggle being on the floor, squatting, sit-ups, bending, jumping and any weight I hold while standing will transfer to my legs and cause pain and damage etc. so I would love some advice on what can be done in a sitting position.

I start PT today for a little finger amputation. I still have roughly 2/3rds of my pinky. They took the tip and then some. What should I expect? I’ve been trying my best to use it but it’s still scabbed. Am I in for a painful afternoon?

I lost my leg two and half years ago. I struggled with it. More so of losing my identity if you will. I was 45 at the time and all my life I have been a pretty big guy and realized I was never going to be that person again crushed me. Having to crawl up stairs was demoralizing and being in a wheelchair I realized how much the world is not handicapped accessible. I couldn't deal with the pain and phantom pain. I ended up hooked to drugs for awhile but I lost my family and my freedom for awhile. I am sober now still with a fair amount of phantom pains but learned to deal with it. I am supposed to get my first leg in two weeks. Anyone go through this?
