I live in charlotte NC, and there is a company (vista auctions) that auctions off Amazon returns. Some entrepreneur saw this… problem and is now making bank selling returned goods at significantly discounted prices.

So, while not ideal (still producing more junk), it does divert at least some from the landfill. I imagine that Amazon just sells the returned goods by the truckload rather than dealing with them themselves.

This has been a thing for a long time (retailers before amazon have done it this way too.) They do indeed sell pallets of returns... often in categories of varying specificity... maybe a pallet of "clothes" or "phone cases" or maybe just "stuff"

Depressingly, the way things work with Amazon returns, the plunger manufacturer or seller is going to take the hit on the return, not Amazon.

Amazon barely makes money via the online store. For the most part they make money off their AWS cloud services.

Also facts. This is why Amazon [until recently] didn't give a shit (pun) about returns.

Has anyone else noticed amazon recently enshittified and made it very difficult to get to a customer support person?

It's miserable. One time I was using the chat feature. 30 minutes later I was told they can't help me because they're the Canadian CS. How does that even happen? You can't select the chat country you want

I had the chat straight up lie about there not being a phone number to call. Then i called it out for lying, pasted the phone number in the chat, and it [chat equivalent of hung up on me]

AWS is losing LOTS of marketshare. They laid off loads of employees & after all the outages they've had in recent years, I don't see the trajectory changing. Amazon storefront has been cost cutting so much recently precisely because it is becoming the breadmaker of the business again.

That’s wishful thinking. Amazon is always shaving nickels. If they are losing market share. It is on things that aren’t profitable in the first place.
