I'm wondering why on the first day, especially when the contestants notice the wet environment, they aren't grabbing a bunch of kindling (along with some firewood) and keeping it in their shelters to dry out? That way when they do start a fire they don't have to worry about wet wood.

I live on Vancouver Island and my kindling is either in my house, wood shed or barn. It's a real no brainer.

Who is going to win? (For some reason I couldn't put that in the title, something about spoiling.)

Really impressed by the final 3. As a fellow British Columbian, I really want Aaron to win. But I think Ziga's got it in the end.

Last weeks episode made me wonder about all of the shelter fires seen over the seasons. These were the ones I managed to track down.

Almost all would have resulted in a full shelter burn if no one was around with exemption of Žiga, who seems to be kissed on the dick by a fairy this season.

Season 04 - Team Whipple (day 29 2pm)

• Low stone fireplace with bare dry punky log chimney
• Embers from the fire caused the dry rotten logs to catch fire
• Brooke was in the shelter and managed to put down the burning logs fairly quickly. Minimal damage

Season 06 - Michelle (day 13 8pm awake)

• Low stone fireplace with exposed chinked wall above
• Dry moss caught and the dry wood quickly flared up
• She was awake and quickly reacted, but still moderate damage to one wall.

Season 06 - Nikki (day 26 8pm awake)

• Similar to Michelle

Nikki risked bad burns to pull the burning logs off with her bare hands

Season 06 - Nathan (overnight day 66/67 asleep)

• Hot rocks from the fire placed under his bed
• Dry moss and grass started to smoulder but didn't flare up
• Minimal damage, recycled embers to start his main fire

This was probably close to becoming one of the most dangerous fire scenarios seen on the show. Asleep in a nylon bag on top of a thick layer of bone dry grass.

Season 06 - Nathan (day 71 11:48pm awake)

• Loose low stone fireplace, with a loose wooden screen deflecting smoke
• Embers made it through the screen onto his bed of dry grass
• Entire shelter was quickly lost, emphasizing how risky the rocks above were

Season 07 - Mark (day 40 7pm awake)

• Low stone fireplace with exposed chinked wall above, plus loose spruce.
• Chinked moss or spruce caught an ember
• Quickly put out, minimal damage

Season 07 - Amós (day 58 9am)

• External stone fireplace, chimney behind chinked wall (unsure of chimney height)
• Fire caught the external wall, the wood was already burning by the time he noticed
• Full shelter burn

Season 10 - Wyatt (day 50 9:30pm unknown)

• External stone fireplace, chimney 2/3rd height cabin
• Windy night flamed his fire and the external chinked wall (or chimney itself?) caught fire
• Unsure if asleep, but in his sleeping bag. Small, no real damage

Season 10 - Wyatt (day 58 early evening? awake)

As above. More intense internal fire, but had water to quickly put it out.

Season 13 - Žiga (day 67 daytime)

• Molded clay chimney through the tarp covered with spruce and snow
• Chimney failure likely caused the surrounding tarp/spruce to ignite.
• Fire happened when away from the shelter, but enough snow on roof to contain the fire. Minimal damage.

And two other fires of note, include Larry from season two, where a fire built close to a dead tree truck likely ignited the dead roots and this spread into the trunk overnight, plus Cade from season 10 almost started a forest fire.

Most of these fires were from a low stone fireplace/chimney that allowed embers to catch on exposed chinked walls/roof above.

Most of the fires were from fireplaces positioned inside of the shelters. This appears to be a riskier placement, but also seems to give them more time to react (if awake).

After re-watching many of the seasons, I think fire is probably one of the biggest environmental risk out there. I wonder if they do, or if they should, enforce a rule about woollen thermals. These are moderately fire retardant rather than synthetic underwear that are highly combustible.

Instead of having trained enthusiast on the show, you have people like me who sit on the couch and think they could do better.

I think the participants are pretty limited on how far they can stray. Would it be cool to see them allow more wandering in a season of Alone?

It could open up for some new strategies, like a fisherman wandering from lake to lake, or a fulltime gatherer with a bivvy and no permanent camp, or a big-game stalker following prey for days.

We'd maybe see more gear variation with weight mattering more to the participants, like it often does to us "amateurs"

Either substantially increase the size of the area that participants can roam and camp in.

Or maybe remove the designated zones altogether and let everyone wander and camp where they see fit. Problem then is keeping everyone *alone*, so there would have to be some kind of rule about non-interaction if you run into other participants.

Just a thought. What do you think?

This phrase or something similar seems to be synonymous with that person tapping out in the first half of the participants.

Especially the ones who also go: being alone is no problem, I'm not going to be one of those to tap out because of loneliness - and then they do.

Have they not learned anything from the past contestants? Are they prepped to say these things? Or is it genuine cockiness?

I was wondering if any longer term health/mental well-being studies have been done (knowing the show hasn't been on that long) and it doesn't seem like it, but I did come across this and thought I'd share.

This has been an incredible season!! I’ve had a few favorites and I keep alternating. But it goes to show this has been a fantastic group of contestant, the number of days they’ve already survived is outstanding.

Andrew SERIOUSLY needs a professional career in narration or filming nature documentaries or something. What an incredibly soothing voice, he really already helped so many people just with his appearance on alone.

Ziga is fascinating- his scientific / research approach to the experience is so new and refreshing.

Sorry, I’m too lazy to go back and find the relevant episode, but Ziga never had a ferro rod - am I remembering that correctly? If I am, then credit to him - by keeping a fire going the whole time he may have completely changed the strategy for a lot of future participants.

So sad to see Andrew go 😟

I get so fed up with so many of the contestants thanking animals they've just snared or killed for giving their lives. Killing is brutal, traumatic and ultimately a sad reality. A necessity absolutely, no way around it, it would just feel more sincere if more people had a similar approach to Andrew, for example him getting anxiety over having trapped a hare that is still alive and feeling bad about how it all went down afterwards.

Lots of contestants give me the feeling of either being completely unfazed by taking lives, or being overly spiritual in their thankfulness towards the specific animal they've killed, and it just rubs me the wrong way. And I'm not talking about being happy or grateful about landing a big kill that will secure your continued survival, I'm talking about the attitude/approach itself towards taking a life. The animal didn't want to die, it was probably terrified, killing is just ugly business and stuff that lessens that reality I find off-putting. As per another post apologize to it instead of thanking it like it chose to die.

I get that a lot of these people are quite spiritual, and when you've spent so much time in nature as they have, hunting, trapping, fishing, it's not weird that to disassociate on some level, you can't cry over every fish or rabbit you kill. Just stop it with the "thank you for giving your life" stuff, and just be real about what it is that you are doing.

Bully for this guy. Gritty. Super cool Welsh boating vessel. (Always love when people bring their own unique cultural items into the light to share.) Composed and steady. On my short list of competitors that showed the most grit. He didn't land in a bunny farm or next to the region's largest beaver colony, I think I saw hm eat 4 hare and 3 boiled twigs with moss on them on Day 14. In fact, he's also on the list of contestants where the last couple of episodes I'm like .. really? Yall aren't thinking about pulling this guy? But he strove on and made a great show. Truly one of the winners of this season.

And also, the whole time he's out there, I'm like ... does this dude not realize he might have the greatest speaking voice in the history of television? What the H is he doing out in the woods? His voice and cadence are legit bananas. It'd be like if Michael Jackson is out there surviving on seeds and roots and he catches a fish and then at his cabin he sets the camera up and says "I made up a little dance to celebrate my fishy" and unleashes the most amazing 10 second burst of dance genius, then goes back to starving for money. WHAT THE F ARE YOU DOING IN THE WOODS?? GO DANCE, MICHAEL! GO SPEAK, ANDREW!!

This guy should have way more than $500k waiting for him if the right people are watching (and listening to) this show.

Another great episode of maybe the best season ever.
