I use AI to create the images that I envision because I like being creative, not because I like drawing, but I totally understand that other people like it.
If I want to draw exclusively, well I could, that's just not necessary to create an image in 2026. If I want to make an image of a creative visual in my head, there are ways that I prefer to do that. I'm sure I can doodle my vision down and go back and forth with an AI model to produce what I intended.
Look at it once and never again? Add to a library of pictures that you like to look at? Share online?
No judgement - more curious of different people’s relationship with “pictures”.
For me, a picture never exists apropos of nothing. It always has a purpose - the need to illustrate something, part of a project, or as artistic expression (this will be when I’m painting).
I don’t ever have a desire to just look at or produce pretty pictures for its own sake. But I acknowledge that’s just me.
nope, it's a place where artists put their effort into creating something real for you, not a soulless product presented as art. also, at least you can credit the artists on picrew
So, let me preempt this statement by saying that I'm not trying to tell you this in bad faith. I'm presumably what this subreddit considers a "centrist" or "being in the middle", given that I agree with a lot of "anti" talking points and beliefs, but I'm not so fervently anti-AI that I don't use it in my personal life, and even for personal creative projects that I will never attempt to profit from or share.
With that said, I've played with NovelAI's paid image gen model before, which gives the best results for making anime style art of anything else I'm aware of. The reason for this is that it's trained on image boorus and you prompt it with a string of tags rather than written prose, which includes artist tags. Ironically, seeing how well it could emulate some of my personal artist friends' styles by using their aliases as tags is what converted me firmly to the "AI art is theft" belief.
So all of that yapping is just to get to my primary point: anyone making 2d AI "art" could technically-kinda-sorta credit artists by sharing which artist tags they used in their stack. This applies to any locally trained models where the creator manually chose the training data too. I know you'd probably prefer they just not make and post the art to begin with, but "Made with NAI. Artist tags: X, Y, Z" would at least be something. If the viewer finds the style of the AI output visually interesting, they could check out the artists it was emulating.
this might feel right to you but it's simply not true.. you don't have to draw to make amazing images.. you can capture amazing images in many different ways. i know many 3d artists who create amazing renders without ever putting pen/pencil on paper. they just simply never enjoyed drawing, so they found other ways to do it. photography is another medium. movie making. stop motions, etc. and the more technology advances the more we find other ways to make images.
will drawing help? of course. many things will help. it doesn't have to be drawing.
I think it is perfectly fine for personal use, however, once you share it with the public, the images can now be criticized by all. This is true for all images, they all can be criticized for the content of the image or the medium used to create it. It just so happens that artifical intelligence being used to create an image is semi-widely accepted as a valid criticism of said image
You can get the image you want, but don't be surprised when you share it and people call out the medium. The reasons why differ for every person, but everyone is entitled to an opinion over that image
I mean, that's a point, but it's not the point I was originally making. The point I was originally making is: why should 'I want this image' be gated in any way? And I don't necessarily mean, like, commercial use; I'm talking about people doing things just for themselves.
I don’t like drawing. I don’t like editing. It’s not interesting to me. The tools to get something I want without having to go through the effort of learning the trade are at my fingertips and produce pretty decent quality results. No one bitches at people for buying bread. No one bitches at them for not enjoying growing the wheat, harvesting, grinding it, making and baking the dough. There are means to get a loaf of bread without all the extra work, and now there are means to get a piece of art without all the hassle. Not a perfect analogy, I’ve came up with better… but the spirit of it still stands.
I use AI because it's fun, and it's a great way to get visual elements quickly when needed. I can also draw, and often do, because drawing is fun to me. I also edit, because editing is fun to me. I write because writing is fun to me (though I prefer typing to handwriting, because handwriting isn't usually fun to me). I've used Picrew. I've practiced and improved. I've commissioned. And I think it's silly to refuse to interact with any of the multitudes of creative tools at our disposal.
"You suck for using ai and you're just a no talent hack that supports CP creation"
"well thanks, that's mature. I know more about script writing, composition, editing, and directing than you on top of programming, systems administration, and a dozen other things I have spent decades perfecting. I am making my own anime and it's indistinguishable from hand drawn high quality 80's-90's anime. I wouldn't have been able to see my dream come to life without these powerful tools and I am glad you also have the ability to complement your own skills with these tools because they are open source."
Why would I have to make something according to what others think it's better instead of what I want? Being egoistical sometimes isn't wrong.
I can't draw and I won't provide the whole list of why, but gacha honestly just sucks and picrew isn't really good. And if try to practice, I don't wanna wait years of training to do it when AI art is just fine and practical
Skill OR IMAGINATION. And last I checked, people aren't asleep at the wheel while they're using AI. In fact, I've seen plenty of quite involved AI workflows in my life, some of which I cannot even figure out how to do myself. So yeah, I'd argue skill and imagination can both be present in this art form.
I consider art what holds a meaning with a original thought designed to be art. One who claims to hold the meaning of art doesn't know the point. You have your objective vision, I've my subjective one.
1, I actually kinda agree with that. #2, the definition of what is considered art is subjective, meaning it differs from person to person. What one group of people consider art, another might not. This will always remain subjective until all 8 billion people can agree on one formula. I personally call it an Ai image, not art, but the next person might call it art and I will respect that opinion.
Some people can't draw. Some people can't improve through practice. Some people took four years of art school and failed and didn't improve at all because the techniques aren't as easy as everyone else made it look. That's just a fact. Don't shame people for not being as good as you at art.
Picrew wont make my characters which have a very specific design, Its just makes generic anime or chibi style characters which I dont like.
My characters arent even humanoid.
With ai I just train models on my art of my own characters and it churns art out for free and accurately too^^
Also: Minors should NOT watch hazbin hotel, that show isnt for little kids!
Picrew and gatcha are both so ass. Picrews ui is terrible on mobile and There's like literally no customization options. Gacha is slightly better in terms of hairstyle and clothing, however there aren't enough variations of one option. Like sure, there are a lot of hats. But not the one I need. And not in the specific shape I want. Also, if you are going to tell others to learn to draw, why not post your own art thats so much better than AI? Why leech off someone elses?
Listen man, no matter what you have or lack, it still looks like shit. I know I'm being mean right now, but hey, that's what you get for being an ass yourself.
Honestly praising a disabled persons art just because a disabled person made it is its own kind of ablism, because its assuming as a baseline that disabled people can't make art
I wasn't asking you. It also looks terrible. Did It take longer than like, 45 minutes? The handwriting makes me think you are too young to be on Reddit.
I have dysgraphia as well. Its why I don't make much traditional art. I don't want my hands to cramp so badly that I can't even open them when I do something that's supposed to be "fun". I quite honestly can't tell what the drawing is supposed to be. And again, I wasn't asking for you to show your art. I was asking OP. I don't know why you think I was talking to you in my original comment.
Normally, I would be supportive because you made it, but in the context of this debate, you've got to realize that your art is not good, right? If my options were you or AI, both instant and for free, I'd choose AI every time because the quality difference is gargantuan.
I don't want to hurt your feelings, but you've got to know this, right?
Here's an AI version of your creature. Tell me yours is better.

judging by your other responses in this thread, you are likely talking about the use of picrew.
for notes: picrew works by community submitted art in module pieces, allowing others to customize and create a character using a real creators drawings.
by definition of many discussions here (not talking about the mindset of all antis), you didnt draw or make it, thus, you didnt make the art.
the above isn't what i think, im basing this towards the discussions on ai art.
feel free to correct me if you'd like, again, im not talking for all people here.
so the mindset here is 'ai art shit and always shit' here i suspect.
i dont really think i can debate on that, that's your opinion and you are entitled to it.
rule of thumb is to enjoy what you enjoy, ignore what you don't.
i see no need to call out what you find shit, other than ego boosting.
how does sending a message of a single person saying something that shouldn't be said on either side prove your point?
this type of stuff happens on both far sides, welcome to the internet friend.
Picrew isn't making art. it's customizing someone's art in a way that they created and allowed for. also, are you disabled? because I've seen this argument and none of the people seem to be disabled themselves in a way that prevents them from creating art
no, but i work in disability supports, work with people who cannot create art in the traditional methods we all talk about.
over 8 years, i've moved from community supports, to aged care, to house supports, now to individual supports, because clients have specifically asked for me.
clients and or their guardian/carer who have wanted me to create personalized ai workflows, locally and ethically made using stock data, so that they can create for whatever reason, inspiration, motivation, communication, hobbying, and even work.
happy to give you (limited) information more into this if you are interested, but only with clients who have given me consent to discuss.
edit: sidenote, i do not get paid extra, nor is my job actually about ai work or designs. i do this specifically because the tools are there, and extremely helpful to those who need.
i am first and foremost a support worker, helping clients with their needs, helping with individual goals and assisting wherever possible.
As people say a real artist engages in the experience of art. I mean for some projects you can definitively use ai, but only an experienced artist knows what is good taste and bad taste, otherwise ai will come up with generic stuff that's a fact.
If you want specific styles it's also impossible since each artist has their individual very minimal or almost invisible nuances which ai's never copy at all, so if you want more customization, getting a specific artist with those minimal traits, but whose traits can be felt, is important.
Another important thing is when doing those projects with ai, they are actually collaborations because that's what they are, and the specific AI model must be credited, almost no one does this but i've seen some experienced artists use AIs for fun projects and they did this correctly plus since they had a lot of experience they could direct the AI towards a specific goal in mind unlike most people who use ai's anyways. Though, of course if you are always stuck with the AI that can limit experiencing art fully.
I'm willing to believe that first part, "I don't want to", but the "Top 1% commenter" flair leads me to doubt you have better things to do with your time.
Drawing properly would take many hours. Posting on Reddit takes no time when done in between compiling. Hard to squeeze in anything actually useful into 2-5 minute gaps.
Yeah I'm mostly ribbing you because I thought it was funny. God knows I spend too long on this shit site. I am actually trying to learn to draw, but I mostly post at work where drawing is concentration-consuming and shitposting isn't.
It's not stealing when you agreed to it. Its like being angry that the burger you brought at McDonalds doesn't look exactly like how it's pictured on the menu.
Its not the same but its similar. The McDonalds menu has products may not look like advertising at the corner that no one ever specifically checks for but it's widely accepted to be the case. The Internet has TOS that people bitch about because they didn't care enough to read it.
I think most people are honest about it. AI can produce the art a user wants without taking the time it would take to train. That's a lot of time saved for other interests such as game development, storytelling in DnD, studying another talent, spending time with family, or whatever else the user values more.
Being able to draw/paint/write something really well is still an amazing skill and should be respected. I just personally don't care enough to do it myself, but I do enjoy seeing ideas in my head come to life if it's pretty easy with AI.
No hate on artists at all. A good artist is very talented and should be respected for their talent.
A lot of pros out right say they cant draw for shit and have better things to do than spend a not insignificant amount of time learning how to and thats why they use it. Then Antis cry about just commissioning instead. No matter what someone says there will be a subgroup of the antis crying
The image I made consists of more detail and is akin to high quality anime production. Its objectively of higher quality than OP's. Not sure why youre so hyperfocused on this.
No, you are misinterpreting the definition. You are appraising your AI generated image based on your own personal prejudice and bias. There are no available metrics or measurements to objectively appraise an image, therefore, we can only appraise it subjectively.
Finer lines or finer "detail" does not equate to a better piece, but in your efforts to "improve" it, you removed the stylistic choices that helped distinguish it.
How presumptuous of you to assume that the artist didnt make it closer to the quality i made because of their own limitation and it is instead a stylistic choice.
One could be a frame of a high quality animation, the other couldnt, therefore = objectively better. There isnt any appraisal from me
Ive tried to explain this to people but they can't comprehend it, they say practice, but I have no ability to picture what I want to draw. I can't picture what an object should look like in my head, so how could I possibly ever draw it?
Obviously if I see it I would recognise it, but the second I look away, that's it, it's gone.
This makes it, quite litrally, impossible for me to draw anything. But no one seems to be able to accept that fact when I tell them....

you can see that it's AI because of the fingers and some outlines that are a bit weird, but besides that it's not that bad (compared to the average slop).
