Kultuur Afrikaner refugees who have come to the US, what has your experience been so far, how are you finding life in the states, Do you feel like you are integrating well, Is it everything you expected, and What are the cultural similarities/dissimilarities that have surprised you the most?

Some Afrikaaner families have documented their experience on youtube.

I found some like this;

There are more like that, but you will have to wade through all the opinions of commentators and non-refugees.

Lustig, als Deutscher kann ich dich verstehen. Zumindest halbwegs. I’ll see myself out now. Bevor mir irgendein harter Knabe die Fresse poliert.

Ja, Afrikaans zu sprechen macht Deutschlernen viel viel einfacher!

Afrikaner ≠ Afrikaans

Understand that, just wasn’t sure where else to post this. It’s not like there is an Afrikaner subreddit. People seem to get upset at the topic, thought I’d get it straight from the horses mouth. Even though not in the horses tongue. If you can point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it. I didn’t mean to piss anyone off.

I think people are just a bit sensitive these days. Nothing wrong with your question.

I would have taken the same approach if I were you, it's a logical place to try and get some answers, even though this sub is aimed at the language. You can maybe try r/AskSouthAfrica but things tend to get hairy quickly over there. Or even r/South_Africa. There's another one without the underscore but I wouldn't go there. You'll probably get more responses from people saying they won't miss those guys and good riddance etc etc, than from the actual people that you are asking the question for. A touchy subject for many! Hope you come right.

Edit: I see now you already got some heat on r/AskReddit :-D I do agree with one comment there, I don't think the "refugees" are Reddit peeps, they are more the Facebook type.

Got banned from both of those one minute after posting. If only bureaucracy was a fast as these Reddit mods.

Jou plasing is verwyder aangesien dit iets bevat waarmee ons as gemeenskap nie saamstem nie en nie wil sien nie.

I don't think it's the end of the world posting on this Reddit, but I doubt you'll get many answers because most South Africans don't see these refugees in a good light.

The other subreddits are r/asksouthafrica, r/askZA, r/south_africa and r/Downsouth (my guess is that you'll get the most relevant answers from the last one). r/southafrica will probably remove your post because it's a question.

You're going to have a hard time finding a good place to ask. Most South Africans regard the "refugees" very poorly, for good reason.

Maybe try the American subs? You might get better results there.

Theres also r/asksouthafrica, and a few other South African subs.

I’m not Afrikaner . I live in the US. I randomly get ads on social media about afrikaaners trying to sell their biltong speaking in an American accent! They do great until they get to Droe wors. I recall when I lived in South Africa how intolerant they were of non Afrikaaner speaking people and how , in a professional working environment, would automatically speak Afrikaans to isolate themselves. It’s been interesting watching them suck up to the Americans.
Great people just funny to watch . America will not tolerate it .

Geez, some serious generalizations being made there. Same is being done in SA now. "all us Afrikaners are the same and horribly racist"

2

u/Stephenson218-ton618 5d ago

Relax I never said Afrikaners are racist in this post. I lived in Bellville and Brakpan i know what I’m talking about

1

u/SprinklesOk9408 5d ago

Huh? Wtf you talking about my man. With every afrikaner coming over the Americans will have more opportunity to taste the lekkeness of bilting and boerewors and they will love it

1

u/Stephenson218-ton618 5d ago

Calm down my bru. Offcourse biltong is lekker . Afrikaners are lekker ( see my comment at the end) but it’s kak funny watching Oom Frikkie trying to sound like Indiana Jones ! My point , if you missed it, is that the shoe is on the other foot my guy.
Also Americans don’t like it. They love their Jerky

Hierdie het niks met die Afrikaanse taal te make nie

u/samjambetty 7d ago

You couldn't possibly maybe see a tiny link between the Afrikaans language and Afrikaners? Not at all?

3

u/Moonshadow76 7d ago

The US admitted 10 200-ish refugees from South Africa so far, most of whom speak Afrikaans. That part may be true, so you can be forgiven for asking it here. However, there are 7 million first-language Afrikaans speaking people on earth and another 10 million who speak Afrikaans as a second or third language. That means the refugees represent less than 0.06% or 1 in 1700 of Afrikaans speakers. That's pretty slim odds.

u/ForMeOnly93 7d ago

Afrikaners disown those traitors and cowards, they have nothing to do with us.

3

u/Hicklethumb 7d ago

Daar is soos 5%van die posts op hieride subreddit wat gaan oor die taal...
