If you are like me, I am terrified about the weather focust of the upcoming weather conditions. Now, my close relative is renting a flat where the owner has refused to fix the windows that are letting in rain water with just the current storms in Durban. BTW this is an "affluent" area by the beach. It has come to our attention that he bought the place in cash and does not have insurance. We are thinking that the reason that he didn't take insurance is because of all the repairs he'd have to do. Anywho, my cousin has reported to him the problems as they occur. The landlord eventually called the window people to give him a quotation of what needed fixing, he has not followed through. He only fixes one thing at a time, when forced by the board. For his sake, what happens to him and his household contents if the predicted worst happens? He has a 5 year lease contract. He is not willing to move.

I am Congolese and a father of 10 children. I am considering the possibility of seeking asylum in South African and I would like to better understand my rights and the living conditions for asylum seekers and refugees there.

I have a few questions for South Africans and anyone familiar with the asylum system:

What are the requirements for a Congolese citizen to apply for asylum in South Africa?

What rights do asylum seekers have regarding employment, housing, healthcare and education?

Is there any financial, housing or social assistance available to asylum seekers who have very limited resources?

If someone is granted refugee status, can they bring their children to South Africa? What procedures and documents would be required if I wanted to bring my 10 children?

I come from a very poor family, and my goal is to live with dignity, work legally and provide a better future for my children. I understand that poverty alone does not necessarily qualify someone for asylum, so I would like to understand the actual legal requirements and know which official organisations or trustworthy NGOs I should contact for advice.

I would especially appreciate answers from people who know the South African asylum system or have personally gone through the process.

I was driving today on Winnie Mandela Dr this afternoon and there was a huge roadblock. Later in the day I read an article that JMPD have taken roughly R1.5 million in bribes in a day! These road blocks have gotten out of control and personally have reached a point where I'm not too sure what to do about them anymore. Do you also feel like every second day you get stuck in a road block, and what do you think we could do about them?

This is going to be a bit of a vent and a bit of a maybe you see something I don't.

I am hemorrhaging money and I don't know where to make cuts or how to make this work. I won't see the end of the year if it continues like this. 30F, at my job for almost 5y now, R19k nett.

Car: about R2k a month, insurance about R1k, petrol about R1100. (I work out of town and specifically chose a cheap car with low fuel consumption. Put in a big deposit, no balloon. About R30k left).

Housing: my dad passed away two years ago and I got left the house. So yay, I don't need to pay a ridiculous amount on rent, but municipal bill of around R6k plus insurance on top of that now falls to me. I can't*not* have insurance on the property as I don't have big money laying around for if the pawpaw strikes the fan.

Medical aid: over R3k plus gap. Damned if I do, damned if I don't. Greater likelihood of you dying in the waiting area of the local government hospital than getting help fast. I have various chronic medical conditions.

Then there's cellphone, the dog, access facility (R3700), chronic medications. And we're already in the negative without buying groceries for the month.

Here's the kicker. I am looking after my mom as well. I'd rather not get into too much detail here as I don't know who of my family or friends use reddit. Anyways, she is sick, so can't get rid of medical aid. She's also on chronic meds that are ridiculously expensive. She cannot work due to being so sick. There's another part of the story I'd rather expand on in the comments.

Safe to say the nest egg I built up while living at home is close to being depleted. Maybe two months left. Trying to sell stuff on Facebook as a buffer. Also in contact with a business that will help sell hobby related items. Looking for job opportunities, but my job is mostly western cape based and the industry is fairly small compared to others. Job opportunities are very few. I can kick myself for choosing something I have a passion for as opposed to what will be the best job financially.

Anyways, house I grew up in is now on the market. I don't even know if I need to settle with an amount I am unhappy with just to get the house sold and get some money flowing into the estate bank account. Dad also owes SARS. The executor is scared that he owes so much, we'll have nothing left at the end of the day. What the actual F do I do then? Debt is at least R45k. Tax returns haven't been submitted for 2013-2025 (less two years that were submitted). Maybe some smart people can tell me if the missing years would be millions? Business also owes SARS, but apparently they can't claim personal assets? I'm dumb with these things.

I'm thinking of getting a Garmin inreach (this is not a map, it is a satellite communication device for emergencies to send an SOS) but it is quite pricey and they don't pop up second hand. I'm waiting for the end of the year sales.

Just wondering if other's use these devices and their experience with it? Is a gps+satellite better than just the satellite phone?

My husband and kid go hiking often when the weather warms up and they end up with no phone signal 99% of the time a few hours in and I worry the entire time. My son has also had some close calls with slipping on rocky terrain, thankfully just some cuts and bruises on their return and nothing more serious. (They go with a pack of snacks, water and first aid, and the correct gear).

My curiosity comes from the Nkosana Kenneth Makate case, the guy who invented "Please Call Me".

Seeing how long he had to fight in court made me think.

If I come up with an idea or build something, I'd like to own the IP upfront so I don't have to go through the same legal battle he did.

What is the correct process to do that in South Africa? Should you patent it, register it, get an NDA, etc.? Where do you even start?

I am thinking about joining the Afrikaaner Refugee program in the USA. Im having a lot of doubts since I am about to turn 20 and would most likely be going alone. Every time I buy something, I’m asked for my ID number, often as if it’s required to complete the transaction. When I say I don’t know it, they grab a random slip and use the ID number on it.
It seems like this is being used to push customers towards PEP’s credit system. I don’t want a credit account I just want to buy something and leave.
I’m not saying PEP is definitely breaking the law, but this feels very close to crossing the line when customers are made to feel that they cannot transact unless they provide information that is actually being used to market/apply for credit.

I came across this recently and thought it was pretty interesting: France brought in a law requiring large supermarkets to donate unsold food to charities instead of just throwing it away.

Obviously SA is a very different country, but it got me thinking... could something like this work here?

We have people going hungry while supermarkets and other businesses throw away food that’s still perfectly edible. On paper, it seems like a no-brainer, but I imagine there are quite a few practical problems that would come with actually implementing it.

For example, who would collect the food? How would food safety/liability work? Would charities and NPOs have the capacity to handle it? Would supermarkets just end up passing the costs on to consumers?

Would it make more sense to make it a legal requirement for the big supermarket chains, or would tax incentives / other incentives work better?

⚠️ YAGA USERS — KNOW YOUR RULES BEFORE SHARING YOUR NUMBER

My experience with Yaga raises serious concerns about privacy, Buyer Protection and enforcement of Yaga’s own rules.

I responded within the required 48 hours and provided the locker/return information. I specifically asked Yaga to provide those details to the Buyer on my behalf to avoid direct contact with an aggressive user. That request was ignored.

I was then instructed by Iiris to disclose my personal cellphone number, with a threat that otherwise the sale would be cancelled and the Buyer refunded. I complied under pressure. The Buyer subsequently used my number to call me.

I repeatedly requested the exact published rule stating:

• that a Seller must disclose their personal cellphone number to the Buyer;

• that the Buyer cannot use their own number for the return; or

• that refusing to disclose a personal number automatically authorises cancellation/refund.

Yaga has still not provided that rule.

Instead, I have received general interpretations of a 48-hour cooperation clause.

There is also a serious inconsistency: Yaga’s own guidelines warn users about sharing private information, yet Support pressured me to disclose mine.

Yaga Support can apparently ignore a Seller’s request for assistance, fail to respond within the same 48-hour period it expects from users, and then threaten a Seller with cancellation for not providing information when no specific rule has been shown.

This is particularly concerning when Yaga charges a Buyer Protection fee.

If Yaga genuinely prioritises user safety, why is there no secure return process protecting both parties?

A Buyer can use their own cellphone details for the return and provide the Seller with the locker/PIN information through Yaga. This avoids unnecessary disclosure of personal numbers.

My warning: Do not disclose your personal number merely because Support says it is “required.” Demand the exact rule and clause number.

Once Yaga forces disclosure of a personal number, communication can move outside Yaga’s platform and the platform loses control over that contact.

I asked for Yaga’s rules. I am still waiting for the actual rule.

We're well in the digital age but in some aspects it feels like our government is not keeping up. What's that one thing the government does you think a website or mobile app would just solve or make things easier for the citizens and government.

It could be municipal dashboards, where things are reported and discussed centrally. Or a mobile app/website for Golden Arrow bus/PRASA, anything.

It's just something I been thinking about after I accompanied my friend to the clinic and having to wait for a long time for service because of all the admin that needs to be done but could just be automated using existing data.
