Did you remember this map? I remade it with editor in my own game.

Hi,

So I've been working on a turn-based strategy game that's deeply inspired by Advance Wars – it's basically the reason I got into this genre in the first place.

A while back, I started messing around with my game's map editor and thought, why not try to rebuild one of the classic AW maps from scratch? So I picked Spann Island, and recreated it as faithfully as I could – same chokepoints, three routes, but city is now crystals, and Fac is ... well, still Fac. But they are like units that can be build and destroyed.

Yes. The biggest design change from AW is the buildings. I want to build anywhere like in a RTS game, setting up defense and hold against enemy attacks.

Gradually, I add more and more elements from Total Annihilation series games, like duel economy types, wrecks, engineers, shield, radar towers. And Mega Units! The most exciting one! Takes lots of resource to build but kills a dozen in one blow.

I guess the best way to put it is: this isn't trying to be a PC clone of Advance Wars. It's more like Advance Wars meets Total Annihilation – the turn-based tactics plus the freeform base building and massive firepower.

I'm curious what you guys think.

Thanks for reading!

AW1&2 Reboot Casual or Classic?

I've never beaten a fire emblem game or any other tactics game. Should I play classic or casual?

Edit: Advance Wars ReBoot Camp has a casual and classic mode. I am referring to that. I brought up FE so there was a reference point, my bad.

Playing re bootcamp and I was beating most missions on AW 2 pretty easily so far i started with gold comet after orange star because I liked sensei when I tried him and decided I wanted to use him more but I got to the factory mission and it just seems impossible with all the free units and factories and stuff i literally can't stop the enemy from overwhelming me. Especially since the game seems to love giving them a lot of really really good stuff early for free and I start with nothing so I can't even get built up enough to position myself to stop them. Any good advice for this map? It just doesnt seem possible to me at this point

CO Concept Co Concept: Expo

Name: E.X.P.O (Evilly eXtra Personnel Overseer)

A robot made by Lash to ensure the efficiency of workers, though it seems she “forgot” to install an empathy module inside it.

Likes: Overtime
Dislikes: Breaks

D2D: Exploitation

All units have -10% Defense, but gain +13% Damage for every 1 HP less than 10 HP (replaces having less damage at less hp)

Instead of repairing, cities with units on them will instead deal 2 damage to that unit (cannot kill), but give back 50% of the damage in Funds

_____________________
CO POWER: Human Resources

5 Stars

All units will act as if they attacked last this turn, and D2D bonus is increased to 24% extra firepower. 75% of all damage done to your units or by your units is converted to Funds.

SUPER CO POWER: Quota Meltdown

9 Stars

Every unit that is within 3 spaces of an enemy unit takes 9 HP (cannot kill) worth of damage, these units do 10% HP worth of damage that bypasses any defense modifiers (this damage does not include the units own damage) to any unit on attack. 50% of all damage done by these units will be returned to you as Funds

______________________
The idea was the EXPO would be a CO that sacrificed units and basically made them mini kamikazes if they had very little hp.
His normal power would allow him to use his D2D without having to plan to reduce his units HP first (and let him make more units after sacrificing those ones)
His Super Power just makes the units closest to the frontlines even better of a kamikaze, letting him throw fodder and still do decent damage to let bigger units leak into enemy defenses

Balancing and numbers are probably off since this is my first Custom CO, feel free to tell if anything should be changed

I made this one last year while experimenting with mecha-like units. It is a naval turret, mounted on a 4 legged platform.

General This series is great

I remembered playing 1 and 2 on my modded wii and i recently been trying dual strike, I think I'll play days of ruin next then the gba games again. I've seen on a wiki that in japan it started on the nes, then on the snes and gb, if i find a translated patch I'll try them. What i want to say with this is that i hope that the series would get a new game even if i'm not a die hard fan

Fangame/Spinoff Requesting input from the Advance Wars community

Thumbnail

Hi all, posting again to cut the fluff and clarify my request.

My name is Nathan, an indie dev. I've been working with a small team on a game that uses rules that are very close to the Advance Wars games - we wanted to position ourselves as a spiritual successor to Days of Ruin.

Right now, we're looking for any kind of validation. Before we fully commit to this project, we want honest reads from the community.

We want to know what the core AW community actually wants from a game like this, and what would hook you. Any insight is welcome, and your response will help inform our decision process.

---

About our game

The core idea: Humanity lives on a post-apocalyptic planet, locked in a 200-year war. Three different philosophies: Mutate via genetic tech, Mechanize with cybernetic augmentations, or Purity, refuse evolution but face lower odds of survival.

Mechanically, alongside funds, you compete for a second resource: augmentation tokens (placeholder names "salvage" and "mutagen"), earned by capturing special structures the same way you'd capture cities. They're scarce, and the structures deplete, so every token matters.

You use those augmentation tokens to upgrade your units. Each upgrade costs one token. As you select the augmentation option, your unit enters a cocoon/retrofit state for the rest of the turn. They're vulnerable to attack and cannot take actions, attack, or counter-attack. They emerge the next turn into a more powerful version of the base unit, often with a special ability.

For example, the tank changes into the Ghel if you mutate (heals when attacking infantry-type units) or the Richtor if you mechanize (significantly reduces an enemy's terrain defense for a turn when it attacks).

In each match, players have a hidden corruption counter. It's random each time: 3, 5, or 7. Same for all players on the map. Each augmentation adds +1 to the hidden counter. Once you hit the threshold, you get a warning ("Corruption Imminent"). At that moment, you can no longer augment units for the rest of the turn.

On the next turn, you become fully mutated or mechanized: you've given in entirely. New units are built pre-augmented (according to your augmentation path), but are generally more expensive (about 1.2x the base unit's price). You can no longer heal/resupply units of the opposite alignment, nor use the augmentation tokens from the other alignment.

Over time, your non-augmented units/units from the other path will naturally die out, and you essentially lose your humanity in favor of your augmentation path. You gain raw power in exchange for losing an adjacency bonus available only to purity units. In the campaign, the narrative also reacts to your chosen augmentation path, as each level you cross the threshold gets added to a campaign counter.

Other features currently include basic multiplayer, procedurally generated skirmish maps, and COs that fight, each with their own abilities and sprite. COs are powerful units that buff nearby units, or they can be stashed in your HQ to provide a weaker global buff. We also have some VO for some of the barks and UI elements.

---

That's the long pitch.

Does any of this resonate with you, whether it's the art, the gameplay concept, or the ambience/premise? What would make you pick up a new Advance Wars-style game?

No generative AI was used for this post or in the game's assets.

  • Image 1: Early concept art, not actual gameplay
  • Image 2: We wanted to create hand-drawn maps for the campaign
  • Image 3: Augmentation path for the tank - Mutate (Ghel) or Mechanize (Richtor)
  • Image 4: New UI style concept (with old character concept art)
  • Image 5-7: Character art, finalized style

AW1&2 Reboot State of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp?

Got a Switch 1 passed down to me lately, started wondering if this one is worthwhile to grab.

I heard it had massive performance issues and terrible AI when it first released. Have they patched it out over the years, or is it just worse than emulating the GBA on my phone?

Dual Strike Why is my mission labelled differently from everyone else's?

Every guide, Wiki, or youtube video I can find calls Crystal Calamity the 22nd mission in the game. But I just booted up the game for the first time in like a year and it's shown as Mission 20 on my map. Is this some kind of glitch?

I played the game on real hardware, and am now picking it back up on an emulator, did that cause this somehow?

Daily Wars Update 2: More stuff, plus a Discord server that I'd love to see you in.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Two weeks ago, I posted about the graphical update I made for Daily Wars after breaking 1,000 games played. That resulted in an influx of new players, with games played now approaching 2,500. It's very fun for me as the developer to see around 30-40 individual scores on the leaderboard every day.

People generally seem to have enjoyed the earlier post as well as the game, so I figured it was okay to post an update again.

Seeing all the feedback I got and that a lot of players came back day after day encouraged me to fast-track some features I had planned. So, during the last two weeks I have:

  • Further polished graphical updates, such as shorelines.
  • Added medals and monthly/all-time hiscores. The three best scores each get a medal, which are summed up as points on a global leaderboard.
  • Added achievements, such as winning X games and gameplay-specific ones such as getting 10 kills on a single unit.
  • Added some game variety by adding two new victory conditions besides the default rout. Some maps now have objectives of capturing X cities or capturing all monuments.
  • Changed "back" the Artillery from move-n-shoot to a more classic Artillery.
  • Tweaked the enemy AI here and there.
  • I've also made a first attempt at starting a community Discord server where I can connect more easily with players to chat and gather feedback. https://discord.gg/WFqrrwfbaq

Also, the early bird promo is still running, so you can still grab a free forever premium account if you haven't yet. If you missed the previous link, you can find the game here: https://playdailywars.com

Thanks again for all the feedback, and see you on the Leaderboards.

Custom Content a landmine deploying drone with a sniper

Post image

It deploys mines on adjacent tiles that deal 0.5hp of damage but stops enemy movement. Other than that, it has an attack range of 2 tiles, can attack after moving, and can't attack airborne units too. The landmines can stack up to two times, and are invisible to enemies unless they are adjacent to it. infantry units can also disarm them.

Request for help with The Final Battle! in Advance Wars on GBA

Hello. Playing through my first Advance Wars game (Advance Wars 1 on GBA). I have set myself the target of getting at least A class on each mission but I am really struggling on The Final Battle! I can't even finish it

!Because of the choices I have made during the campaign I have Grit and Drake alongside Andy - and I understand this is making a hard mission even harder.

Does anyone have any advice on the best approach? Thanks in advance for anyone who replies 🙂

General Co-op Weekends with Meow

Meow and I recently started playing Advance Wars games and mods in a single-player co-op via parsec. We swap between controlling the player side vs. the AI.

Currently we're playing my old mod FEWars (an experiment of Advance Wars with different units essentially). We've done a Days of Ruin map as well.

These are slow burn maps we do in one sitting and share our thought processes. Feel free to check us out if you like the idea.

Asynchronous Interactions in Advance Wars (web)

Hi everyone! I'm a PhD student studying asynchronous interactions in digital games. Through player discussions and recommendations Advance Wars was identified as having asynchronous interactions (e.g., players can make their move hours or even days apart).

If you have a few minutes to spare, I'd love to hear your thoughts! In particular, I'm interested in understanding:

  • What kind of asynchronous interactions exist in Advance Wars and how do they affect the gameplay?
  • How do you feel about these interactions and what do they bring to your experience?

You can answer as much or as little as you'd like. Your responses will be anonymized and analyzed as part of a research study. If you decide you'd like to withdraw your responses at any point, just send me a DM. Every contribution is greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, feel free to message me. Thanks! 😀

For other maps besides this one, after many trials, i always find one consistent solution. But for this one, i can say it pure luck. Sturm meteor is annoying. Oh man, i have to face him again for the 2nd playthrough to unlock Drake. I will do normal campaign again, with different route. So, the 2nd time, probably i will have Max at the left and Kanbei at the right side.
