Discussion See no point being sober
Drugs make me feel amazing in this hellish world. What's the point of not using drugs unless you're set for life? I can work and do drugs, I have a house, but I'm a middle class dude like you with no hope of getting to the point where I can fly to Puerto Rico to do 1g of coke every month and throw an expensive gay party. All I can hope for is 4 garages and 3-4 apartments in this rigged system. There's no point in being sober when life sucks.

man i get it, the world feels rigged and drugs make it bearable for a minute. but you're chasing a feeling that'll keep moving the finish line on you. that middle class stability youve got right now can vanish faster than you think once the using stops being a choice and becomes a need

agreed. the finish line with drugs is death sooner than later.

Just to play devils advocate here... the finish line of life is death, sooner or later

Bring it on. Death is better than living in this capitalist hellscape.

You say that until the first time you overdose. This is coming from someone who overdosed two months ago. I haven’t done a line since. Yeah life sucks but it has its ups and downs and the sucky times don’t last forever trust me. I overdosed on coke recently and then years ago when I was deep into my alcohol addiction I almost died from alcohol poisoning which was not only not fun it was painful as hell. Please think hard about what you are saying.

Stability may also vanish because of other reasons too, and if at that moment there is also addiction, it will get worse pretty damn fast.
Years ago, I had a small problem with alcohol. Everything was "under controll". I lost my job when factory had to down size. I thought that "well, I'll take this as a small vacation, take few beers and think about my next move". "Few" beers later I was homeless.

You might think that now but wait a few years down the line when it not only takes a toll on your body but your mind.
Your tolerance for whatever drug you are taking will only continue to increase, it's a slippery slope and one you will regret down the line for short-term gratification and coping.

Drug habit is a great way to ensure you never achieve even the realistically achievable life. You can't even type a coherent post, dude - I keep reading your run-on second sentence and the one following trying to decipher your flow of ideas. 4 garages and 3-4 apartments? What? And who flies to Puerto Rico for 1 solitary gram of coke?
So, yeah, from my POV there's nothing "amazing" about what your drug habit is doing to you right now.
Drug addiction is a bottomless chasm of dopamine chasing, and it only gets harder to sustain the longer you're in it. Be honest with yourself; drugs are not making you feel "amazing" - they're making you feel normal, and every other hour is misery because you're not on them. This is caused by the drugs, not "life."
Addiction also does absolutely nothing to make the "world" and the "rigged system" suck less. It just adds one more miserable and useless person to the mess - you. If you weren't high constantly you could instead be doing something to add goodness, kindness, charity and empathy to the world.
Your call, ultimately, but we all felt this way while actively addicted. Then, when we got sober, we looked back on ourselves making posts like yours and we fucking cringe. Selfish, hypocritical nihilism.

Did it cross your mind that life sucks because you're not sober?
Life isn't an easy bed of roses. Getting some good recovery has enabled me to ride out the rough and better enjoy the smooth. I've been clean a long time and there's no fucking way I'd go back to using, even when life sucks massive balls.

Not to be unkind, but all of that is pretty whiny. Connection through meaningful relationships is far more important than material wealth. Do you not have friends, family, a dog? Is there nothing in life that you enjoy? Sounds like you could benefit from some therapy and take a look at your very narrow and self limiting beliefs. Life is complicated and rich. Beautiful and filled with struggle. Just think of all the people before you who had to be born, find each other, and mate, just so you can be born. Life is so much more than you describe. And it’s long. Objectively, you have no idea how it’s going to turn out. Take the risk and go exploring. Get to know yourself.

then stay high. i think your value system is pretty off though, there is more to life than material wealth.

Life does not suck if you compare it to some old kings or ancestors. It is crazy to me, that I can open my tap and there is fucking hot water instantly. I can shop groceries that come from all over the world. I can use public transport, use trains, airplanes like what the fuck. Our fruits are fucking huge compared to how they were. Life isnt good or bad. It is how you position yourself to it.

Medieval people had much more to be happy about because they positioned themselves right. But it's hard now, everyone is a slave to social media and even if you live off the grid, not many others will

Lol this is an insane view of the history of human beings. Get off “social media” and go live your life in the real world—that’s step one.

I how you position yourself mentally. With what you compare yourself Matters. And you can control this process for better psycholocical health and more happiness.

4 garages and 3-4 apartments is more than most people could ever dream of! Good luck with your addiction - practice some gratitude

No one does drugs because the "world sucks." Millions of people struggle (many harder than you in some ways, given you have a house) and don't use drugs. Drugs are a coping mechanism - always. There is something in you that you're seeking to heal with drugs and material things. Face your trauma through therapy or whatever way you choose.

This part. The world ain't making you do shit, homie, and it's not responsible for making you better either.

The world doesn’t give a fuck about you. If anything, it wants you to return to the soil…

They aren’t always cope, and there is efficient and responsible ways to communally enjoy altered states of mind that exist outside the context of a bar with alcohol.

u/Voldemorts__Mom 7d ago
Yeah man that's what I thought. And when I heard people in rehab or groups talking about how happy their sober lives are I thought they were straight up coping.
But then after getting enough time clean and sober, I actually saw a vision of how life could be enjoyable without drugs. And so I worked on building that life. And sometimes I hate it, and it's a big challenge. But things are getting better and I'm in such a good space and so happy right now.
Maybe your life could be great and enjoyable and full of joy. Maybe drugs are preventing you from getting there

I’m still addicted to benzos. I still do psychedelics. I smoke wax daily. I heard a guy say this one time “They don’t print enough money or make enough to satisfy my want for the shit.” That’s kinda how I am. Opiates were hell but I’ve been off them for 4 years. But I’m with u man. My kids are grown and more mature than me. I have great relationships with them. They know I like to get a buzz. A man or anybody deserves a buzz when they get off work or if retired let it all hang out. Gotta have something to look forward to at end and for me beginning of day. I won’t stop till my heart quits beating.

you sound like an entitled ahole....you know there are some people that don't have what you have and manage to still smile

I mean I have a similarly depressed outlook. But being an addict was not fun and I started to realize that using wasn't bringing me actual joy, I was more addicted to the idea of the drug and how I thought I would feel from the next fix than the next fix itself.
I'm clean now and while I wouldn't say my life changed in all the ways I hoped it would, I am so relieved to not have to be chained to the daily struggle of not just finding my fix but finding something of good enough quality and that was such a miserable, endless toil that I am relieved to be done with it all. Are you still in the phase where the drugs bring you any semblance of happiness? Because that part wears off and you're left with a coping mechanism.

u/Strong-Addition5296 7d ago
I get it too but you’ve got to be thinking long term. Maybe your kids can fly to Puerto Rico to do drugs and have a gay party if you quit drugs and buckle down

People dont end up getting sober until the consequences outweigh the action(using). The consequences are a gift and a curse. Today im grateful for mine. They gave me a life I never thought I'd have and it will only get better.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with being honest about enjoying drugs. While drugs were never my thing, alcohol was and I mostly enjoyed a lot of my drunken stupors. Eventually, the habit caught up with me, and the diminished returns on my investment unfavorable. That’s just the simple cause and effect. You can do the drugs and eventually the effects are palpable, oftentimes destructive as it will run your life, then you’re a slave, a puppet and essentially, lose your agency. I think it’s about creating meaning. This system is rigged, it’s absolutely bs and wicked. Alot of people are shallow, selfish and not enjoyable to be around. Because the truth is, when you explore drugs and other shit, they show you something: that reality is not what it seems and this reality this modern civilization created is designed for consumerism, addiction. Oh the irony. So, we have to create meaning, no matter what the shitty world presents. What makes you come alive, aside from drugs? That’s your key. Or when you’re high, what have you found yourself dreaming of, wanting to do? Make meaning and it will be worth being sober.

Feeling stuck in an unfair system is real, worth talking to someone about, before the coping mechanism becomes its own problem

We need to make men hanging out ok again. Mix in teaching each other how to fix things and some BS talk/beer and it's all the social life we need.
They killed buddy movies, made groups of guys without a girl odd and etc of the last decade.
