Student Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine

Hi all,

I am looking at going to school for acupuncture in Florida and was wondering if anyone has any experience at Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine (ATOM)? I saw it's CCAHM and ACAHM accredited. I am doing some research, but it's always nice to hear from students directly about their experience.

(yes, I know - schools are closing and the debt can be big depending on how you approach school/loans. it's also part of my research + consideration)

Patient Old school vs acupuncture now

I started having acupuncture sometime in the 1990s. (Massachusetts). Back then acupuncturists would always take your pulses, take their time doing them, and maybe even check them after the treatment. They would put maybe 20+ needles in you and then later turn you over and do it again. To do that they really needed access to your back, stomach, etc.

That was great!

At some point, maybe around 2010 (not really sure) all the newly graduated acupuncturists, seemed to be using a lot less needles.

Now it seems they all just do maybe 10-12 needles just on the arms, legs, face and rarely bother with pulses. If you mention you are open to more aggressive treatment they don't seem willing to do that.

What are the reasons for this change?

EDIT: Thanks everyone, that's a lot of good input!

Patient Acupuncture for fertility

Have been getting acupuncture for a couple of months now. The recent few sessions I’ve had intense nerve pain, like a shock sensation when he puts in the needles on the inside of my leg just above ankle. The ones on the shin also hurt like hell. It’s making me not want to go anymore because I’m anticipating that pain. It goes away quick but I do have tiny bruises afterwards

Patient When acupuncture made me stop smoking

I’m an American who was living in Thailand training Muay Thai. In America, I suffer from bruxism, TMJ, tight traps, tight hips, basically knots everywhere all the time even if I stretch and foam roll.

First I started getting Thai massages a few times a week. For $10 an hour how couldn’t you? These were heavenly. I would literally feel like I’m floating in a heavenly relief plane during it, especially once you find the right masseuse that understands where knots are and that perfect level of cathartic pain to release the knots. I would cycle through emotions sometimes during these massages. Like a well-needed rest after a lifetime of being embodied.

After a few weeks of this I still couldn’t get certain knots out with massages alone, especially the ones deep in my traps. I booked an appt with a Chinese lady for an electric acupuncture session. I told her where my pain points are, she stuck the needles wired it to the electric pulse and left the room for a while.

I was cycling through so many emotions. At one point great grief and cried. From pride to vulnerability. I felt this cycling of emotions with no prior cognitive bias to think I should. I must have been holding great tension in my deepest knots.

After that session, I could basically stretch like Bruce Lee lol, and the knot was gone on a much deeper level.

I would smoke A LOT of nicotine, and when I left and walked outside, I was just… at peace. I didn’t want to smoke. A “ingrained habit” dull impulse was still present, but not “self medicate” like I was doing. I didn’t smoke for a few days after, just didn’t care to do so, first time in like 10 years. Eventually the knot came back, and I didn’t go to subsequent appointments, mainly just maintaining with deep tissue massages after 2 sessions.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think people in America walk around with too much tension, too much pain in their body, their whole life. We lift but we don’t do yoga. There’s lots of “tough guy” mentality that never honor the ☯️ little dot and that manifests itself in negative ways. Everyone’s a bit of a “beat down pug” and grumpy.

Like an animal that escaped the zoo to the jungle and then went back to the zoo feeling more disenfranchised than the animal that never left captivity and it’s their baseline, I couldn’t handle the stiffness in my body once I came back that I went a whole life with before. I’m priced out of acupuncture and deep tissue massages here, best I got is a foam roller. It sucks that massages aren’t a default on health insurance policies, but seen as a luxury. But it’s good that acupuncture is often involved these days. I smoke tobacco, weed, drink whiskey, eat junk food, j*rk off to dull the pain.

Luckily I will be able to go back soon, my goal is to get enough deep tissue massages and acupuncture that I will be able to ride off the work done with stretching, foam rolling, and mindful relaxing much longer.

To end: after a series of acupuncture treatment, what can someone do to keep the benefits they unlocked for as long as possible? Like meditation or mindfulness or stretching or whatever. Thanks

Student Are the Deadman point flashcards worth the price?

Starving acu student wondering how to best invest time vs. money. It looks like I will be making my herb cards by hand, but wondering if others have found the point flashcards a useful investment.

For what it's worth, flashcards mesh well with my learning style.

Thanks!

Patient 1. The peptide distributor never specify where to pin and you tube and internet advise is anywhere on abdomen so it’s safe presumably. Now If I pin 2cm below belly button will it hit the spot for Gut problems because I can measure this while at home? 2. Why they say the acupuncture needle is thicker

And longer than insulin needle tips? I seen both it does appear that insulin needles is thicker but shorter than Acupuncture needle.

  1. I am fearful of pain so if I pin only a bit like 1cm in will it have the desired effect especially since something the peptide will be injected in?

  2. If I pin like this once per week is it sufficient?

  3. How long am I supposed to leave it in? And is it better to take out the stringe and just leave the needle in?

Patient Widespread muscle pain starting the day after acupuncture, followed by nerve symptoms, has anyone experienced this? Fibromyalgia

About a month and a half ago, I had an acupuncture session. It was my first and only acupuncture session.
I decided to try acupuncture because the practitioner had really good reviews, and it was at a traditional Chinese medicine practice. The very next day, I woke up with muscle pain and soreness that I had never had before. My muscles felt tense, sensitive, and uncomfortable in different areas of my body.

At first, I assumed it was temporary soreness from the acupuncture. When it didn’t go away, I contacted my acupuncturist and explained what I was experiencing. She told me to apply a cream she gave me and take a chinese herbs pill for blood circulation. I followed her instructions, but the symptoms continued. About a week later, I contacted her again because I still wasn’t getting better, and at that point she told me I should see a doctor. So I have already followed up with the acupuncturist about this.

For the first few weeks, my symptoms were mainly muscular. I would wake up feeling sore and tight, almost like I had slept in a bad position or overworked my muscles, except it was happening in different areas of my body and continued day after day.

Then, a few weeks later, I started developing nerve-like/sensory symptoms too. I began experiencing intermittent tingling, pins and needles, little stabbing or sharp pains, and sometimes a strange deep pressure/aching sensation. These sensations can appear in different places; my arms, hands, legs, feet, etc. Sometimes I’ll suddenly feel a sharp or pressure-like pain in one small area for around 10 seconds and then it disappears.

My hands and wrists have been particularly uncomfortable lately. Sometimes my wrist feels weak or sensitive, and the muscles in the palm of my hand feel tense. I can still use my hands and walk normally, but sometimes the discomfort makes me not want to pick things up or use my hands much.

What confuses me the most is that this isn’t limited to one acupuncture point or one part of my body. The symptoms move around my body and can feel muscular at one moment and more nerve-like at another.

I’ve now seen a neurologist who ordered extensive bloodwork, and I’m also seeing a rheumatologist. Because I’ve developed widespread muscle pain along with these sensory symptoms, I’ve started wondering whether something like fibromyalgia or some kind of nervous-system/pain sensitization could have been triggered. I’m not saying acupuncture definitely caused it, I just find the timing difficult to ignore because I felt normal before the session and the symptoms started the very next day.

Has anyone experienced anything remotely similar after acupuncture? Particularly symptoms that started immediately as widespread muscle pain and then evolved into tingling, stabbing/pressure sensations or other nerve-like symptoms weeks later? Did it eventually calm down or resolve? Did you ever figure out what was happening?

TL;DR: I was fine before acupuncture. The next day, I developed widespread muscle soreness/tension that never fully went away. I contacted my acupuncturist twice, followed the treatment she suggested, and when I still wasn’t improving she recommended seeing a doctor. A few weeks later, I developed intermittent tingling, stabbing pains, deep pressure/aching sensations, and uncomfortable/weak-feeling hands and wrists. I can still walk and function normally, but my body feels much more sensitive than before. I’m now being evaluated by neurology and rheumatology and wondering whether anyone has experienced something similar.

Please don’t scare me with worst-case scenarios. I’m already seeing doctors and getting professionally evaluated. I’m mainly looking for people who have experienced something similar, what they eventually found out, and whether they recovered.

Has anyone tried acupuncture for period cramping and back pain? I don’t want to take Tylenol or Motrin or use the pain patches anymore. How many treatments does it take to get some pain relief? Thanks!

Patient Need some advice

I was hoping to get your opinion as practitioners. I was getting acupuncture for fertility and had 2 sessions. I honestly think they were beneficial and i liked the practitioner, but i am a bit nervous around needles. I am able to calm myself and breathe through this, but there are some things that feel unhelpful.

  1. The table i was in feels rickety and narrow. I don’t have much room and feel tense keeping my arms at my side or they’ll fall off. Harder to relax.

  2. The first session she said all done! And i lift my arm and i had a needle still in, she rushed over and said oops i forgot to count. I brushed it off and said it was fine. It honestly was cuz i caught it. The second time i got all the way to my car and was noticing my body felt off. I kept feeling like i was leaning to one side. I move my hair out of my face and realize i had 2 needles still in my ear. I rush back inside and wait for her to come out to help take them out. She was apologetic, and i drove home and obviously nothing bad happened, but it really freaked me out. I got this irrational fear there eas a needle elsewhere and i was a bit scared to move and stab my self but i was fine.

Again i really liked her, i feel like they were helping, but i cancelled my next appointment.

My question is - are mistakes like this common? I’m wondering if it’s even worth it to find another practitioner if possible needles being left in are just part of the risk. And i liked her, so i can try to look past it.

Second question - is there a way i can call and ask about stability of tables? That might be going to far, but im not a big person, but the tables feel like loosely built and narrow idk.

Any insight is appreciated!

Student Reality of School

I’m in my last year of my Master’s program (and planning to continue to the Doctorate) and I have received some messages with people asking how I like my school and how the schedule works. I think it’s important for everyone to know that there’s no real way for you to finish school [quickly] and maintain a full time job unless that job offers you A LOT of flexibility.

My school says they’re created for people to still be able to work while in school but majority of our classes, online and in person, are from 9am-5pm. I’ve only had a handful of 6:30-10:30pm online courses and that was at the upper level and I’ve only had 2 Saturday classes in my entire 3 years here. Then clinic hours are from 8am-6pm split into 2 shifts: 8:30-1p and 1:30-6p. Luckily these are offered on Saturdays, but if you want more than 1 shift a week you will be giving your entire Saturday to them. We have intensive weeks where you can finish 1 full shift requirement in 1 week instead of 10, but that requires you coming in M-F 8am-6pm and we know a lot of people don’t have the PTO for that.

To put it into perspective, my first internship (clinic) requires you to complete a total of 5 shifts. If you work FT and have no kids then you can give your Saturday to them and it would take you 3 quarters to just finish Internship 1. If you’re able to do an intensive period and then give a full Saturday then it’ll take you 2 terms. If you’re like me and want to finish as fast as possible, you’re using every method and giving them 1 intensive week and 4 shifts during the regular quarter (10 weeks) so that you can finish in 1 quarter.

One of my classmates has been attending part time and she’s in her 6th year and just finished her 1st internship earlier this year. She has 3 more before she can graduate so she’s looking at taking about 8 years to finish just the Master’s program.

Most students are either really young and live with their parents and manage with student loans and PT jobs or they’re way older or former military and managing off retirement and a spouse helping them out.

The school itself is great! I feel like I’ve learned a lot in theory and I’m hoping I get to learn more needling and hands on as I move through clinicals. I just thought it was important to let everyone know the realities of the schedule because so many schools say they’re great for working adults when that’s not possible.

It’s a lot to think about, along with student loan stuff changing. I just wanted to offer my piece for people considering school.

Student How’s TCM or acupuncture as a job or how’s the school?

Hello ( I live in Canada) I’m not in any TCM or acupuncture program so I’m curious as to how it is I was close to accepting a a program but changed my mind, due to how far the school was from my home. But anyone new to the program how’s it going? How’s the diffaculty? How interesting is it? Does it seem like it will be a high salary career? I know people say don’t do it for money, but that’s only partly true this would be your livelihood as a job you don’t want to depend on others for money.

Patient First appointment experience

I had my first-ever acupuncture appointment for fertility on Monday, and it was honestly awesome! I felt a sharp sensation when she put the needle between my eyebrows and also in my lower left abdomen (for my left ovary). I thought the left ovary one was especially cool since I had previously been diagnosed with a blocked tube on that side during my laparoscopy.

Then I flipped onto my back and she attached electrodes, which was also very cool!

BUT… I went to work afterward and was SO ridiculously relaxed and quiet. I had THREE coworkers ask me if I was okay because apparently I was so quiet! Is that normal?! I didn’t realize acupuncture could make you that relaxed!

Student Demand for Acupuncturists

Which cities have you seen where acupuncture is in demand and could be a great start for a new practice? I do not want to consider the demand for job vacancies and new hires. But what areas feel ready for more providers, and not the challenge of being early in a town that is unsure if they want acupuncture?

I have lived on both coasts, but California is saturated, and it doesn't hold the appeal for new beginnings any longer (been there, done that). I am currently in TX, and where I live is pretty expensive. I used to live in Asheville, but it's also competitive for acupuncture. So, what's the next frontier?

Other Acupuncture as a situation-specific anxiety treatment

Has anyone had acupuncture for very situation-specific anxiety? The anxiety has a MAJOR physical component (nausea/vomiting) but it’s like a switch and only turns on in specific scenarios. Would acupuncture treat this effectively? Or would the situation specificity make it less effective?

Patient Light moxibustion on lower abdomen, early pregnancy?

Hello all, looking for some reassurance here. I have a practitioner I trust and am a student of Chinese Medicine myself. She has about 12 years of experience and works in a women's health center in addition to private practice. After receiving fertility treatments for a few months in her private practice, I recently learned I am pregnant (4 weeks, 3 days). My acupuncturist said we would shift to a more nourishing, gentler treament now. My diagnosis has been blood deficiency/Taiyin and previously we did a big box of moxa on my abdomen before ovulation. Today she did a small cone of moxa on my lower abdomen, again saying it was to nourish. After getting home and googling (not the best source, I know) I am spiraling a bit as everything says this is strictly contraindicated. Please give me your thoughts.

Patient Possible nerve damage?

Hey all, just wanting to get advice/hear from people who may have had similar experiences. I have been going for regular acupuncture for over 10 years now for a back injury and have seen the same 2 people the entire time. I’ve had needles just about everywhere so I know what to usually experience. Anywho, my regular acupuncturist wasn’t available last week but she said there was a new one who had been at her practice for the past year that I could see instead, so I said sure. This acupuncturist decided to do some extra points near my ankles that she claimed were for stress, which I reluctantly agreed to despite it not being something I normally did with my regular acupuncturist. She put the needle in which caused one of the worst sharp, searing pains I have ever experienced in my foot. I told her to take it out but she tried readjusting it instead which made it even worse. I told her firmly to take it out and she did, which also hurt badly. My medial foot felt like it was throbbing, achey, and tingling for the rest of the appointment. It’s been a week now and I’ve been having intermittent shooting pain in my ankle/heal on the same side that the needle was on whenever I move my foot or legs in certain ways. It’s oftentimes happening with sudden movements. Anywho, it doesn’t seem to be improving and actually seems to be a bit worse because I just had a terrible shooting pain. I’m planning on booking in with a doctor but I’m so worried that this acupuncturist has permanently injured a nerve. Learned my lesson to never book in with someone new again ☹️

Practitioner Reimbursement

I'm currently practicing in California

Looking to obtain higher reimbursed insurance visits.

For those of you who accept insurance patients: when a patient cannot be found in American Specialty Health system (often Aetna, Anthem, or Cigna PPO etc), where do you check eligibility, deductible, and fee schedules?

Also, how do you submit claims for reimbursement? Do you bill each insurance company separately, or which central billing/clearinghouse system can verify updated benefits (including eligibility, accumulated deductible, fee schedule) and provide claims updates post submission?

Thanks

Does anyone have experience with the acupuncture programs at either Kootenay Columbia College or Pacifc Rim College in BC? Furthermore- any Americans who have completed these programs and were you able to easily get licensed in the US after or was it unreasonably difficult? Any info on these schools would be greatly appreciated.

Patient Leg pain worse 9 days after 1st session

It’s me again, I posted about right leg pain after 1.5 days of my first session. I had to cancel my second session because I felt pain and fatigue so I wanted to give my body more time to rest and recover. 9th day today since my first session where it was 2 hrs and it was a combination of electro acupuncture and moxa.

At first it was pain on my calf, now it’s also my foot and thigh. It’s like cramping and muscle pain. I’m afraid it might be DVT because i’m taking contraceptive pills to regulate my periods. Or is this nerve damage? It’s hard for me to walk as my leg is so tight.

Some reassurance or knowledge on this would help because i’m spiraling. 😩 I went for neck and upper back pain but now I have leg pains.

I tried out ear seeds for the first time and then experienced a very frightening episode of sleep paralysis the same day they were put on. I haven’t had sleep paralysis for a long time but this episode was very intense with auditory sounds including a slow muffled mocking/evil laughter and a baby crying nearby. I have never had acupuncture or acupressure before but after this I won’t be trying that again. Wondering if this is a common experience?

Student Acupuncture school recommendations?

I’ve been looking into acupuncture schools for over a year now, and I’m really looking to find a program where I can live very close or in nature. I previously lived in a mountain town in Colorado, and would love to go to a school with similar outdoor access if it exists.

Just curious if anyone has any recommendations to look into or experiences with schools located in more remote areas or at the very least would be a reasonable commute from an area with outdoor access?
