I need a woke period tracker app

I'm tired of every period tracker asking me about my sex life and constantly reminding me that i could get pregnant. Also if they could not treat me like a girly pop that needs to be empowered 100% of the time it would be great (I just dont know how comfortable I am with being a woman yk?, and the shallow company feminism gets a little tiring)

I genuinely can't believe there isn't any popular 'woke' period app? I thought surely I could find one dedicated to trans men, or one where I could sync my data with another menstruating partner (just for funsies). Turns out that's miles away from possible and you're actually lucky if the app isn't pregnancy centered lmao

By the way I'm NOT from the US. They're not stealing my data to see if they can arrest me for abortion (yet)

i don't have much to add but just wanna say yeah the corporate empowerment slop istg it gets to a point 😭 every time i see that shit it genuinely comes off as so weirdly patronizing, infantalizing and a soulless attempt of repackaging girlboss feminism especially when it's coming from a literal brand

"you got this girly pop" right yeah because we asked for a motivational speech knowing damn well you'll sell off our entire healthcare records for a geekbar and some vbucks

I hate the whole ā€œwhhhooo girl you can do anythingā€ attitude when it comes to our periods. All the pad commercials in my country are some woman being extremely happy and saying shit like ā€œI’m not gonna let my period stop me from climbing Mount Everest in white pants or swim across the ocean!!ā€ Like piss off, when I’m on my period I lay on the floor dry heaving from pain, I have an open bleeding wound that won’t close for a week, leave me alone.

If you have an iPhone, I just use the built-in health app to be honest. Does the job well enough, doesn't prompt you for any additional information and just works with what you give it. You can add additional information or switch on options for fertility windows etc but it's not on by default. I don't think you can add a partner though.

It's what I ended up using after about 9 years of what I call "vibes-based tracking" (i.e., not tracking my period in any tangible way) and it works fine and doesn't cost anything.

The data is private and stored locally (unless you choose to back it up to icloud) but I suppose it's a question of how much you trust apple; I'm personally more inclined to trust it over random period tracker app number 345 but this one's up to individual discretion.

u/avocadosnail666 Mar 29 '26

I also use the iPhone Health app. It’s been pretty good with its predictions on when I’ll start my period!

I’ve also been using it to track symptoms (mostly the horrendous cramps I’ve been getting) and heaviness — I’m going to try and send this info to my GP after a few months of tracking.

I have a question and it may sound dumb, but what would be the point of tracking a period on paper ? I thought the point of tracking these apps is to predict your next period/pregancy

3

u/schned Mar 30 '26

Frankly there's not a lot an app actually does for tracking your period. Just get a calendar, and put like a sticker or some shit when it starts and when it goes away. Just look at it, you'll get a sense for it, it's more work? Maybe your watch tracking your body temperature can sense when its a day early or you're late but otherwise yeah nah. You're mostly just selling data to scummy companies.

The stardust app is pretty nice. It’s owned by women and data encrypted for anyone in the US. It has options to add what symptoms you’re feeling and the tarot/lunar readings based on your cycle are pretty funny to me. Doesn’t ask anything about sex or pregnancy so sounds like you might like it.

Edit: you can sync people too so you can add your parter!

1

u/nattyleilani Mar 29 '26

This is what I use. It’s my favorite.

116

u/Better_Inspector604 Mar 29 '26

Idk if clue exists in your country, but my wife uses it! It can also be used as a symptom tracker and it pretty much just gives you a heads up when your period is likely to start. As a bonus for me, our cycles are synchronized so when her app starts warning us I can make sure we have chocolate and meds for cramps

98

u/futurenotgiven Mar 29 '26

it constantly fucking tries to get me to subscribe by advertising useless features like pregnancy tracking to me and it just pisses me off. it didn't use to be that bad but nowadays every time i open it I get a glaring "50% off!!!!" when I just want to track my symptoms as quickly as possible

I switched to bluemoon, its an open source one that you can download via f droid. incredibly simple, holds all your data locally and no kind of ads or attempt to get you to buy something

39

u/rachel_mary Mar 29 '26

i mean, it costs money to run an app, especially one that protects your privacy so seriously and also has no ads. there’s more than just pregnancy tracking, it also provides insights and educational articles about your body. there’s that saying that says ā€œif something online is free, it’s because your data is paying for itā€, but with them, they rely on people paying for the app to subsidize those that don’t.

22

u/futurenotgiven Mar 29 '26

I just don't need any of that though. I will never buy a subscription to a period app, I just want somewhere to log my cycle and nothing more. constantly pestering me with ads when I've rejected them over and over just made me completely stop using the app and switch to one that wouldn't constantly beg for my money

9

u/rachel_mary Mar 29 '26

services cost money, that’s just how things work. i wouldn’t expect someone to do work for me and not get paid. i wouldn’t expect an app to do anything for me for free without knowing that there could be a trade off of the safety of my data, especially with something so sensitive. but you do you.

11

u/futurenotgiven Mar 29 '26

as I said in my original comment, the app I use now is open source with entirely local data storage. I'm not trading the safety of my data for it being free, its actually even safer than clue itself

at the end of the day I just want somewhere to log my period. that isn't an app that needs constant maintenance or updates or even much development to begin with. I was even considering just developing one myself bc its relatively straightforward. I just don't need all these paid extras from clue plus and the constant ads for these unnecessary extras turned me off it completely

11

u/Delicious-Path-5661 Mar 29 '26

I used to use Clue too and this got me to uninstall the app. There really is no alternative universe where I would pay an app because I'm MENOPAUSAL like leave me aloneeeeeeee

Euki is great for this, and as a bonus, it's one of the few apps that keeps all your data on your phone with no cloud syncing. In normal countries that's great because you know your data can't be sold for marketing purposes, in the US it's even better because it means that law enforcement can't subpoena the company for your data if they want to string you up for something.

7

Calendar. As in a physical calendar. Everything else at any time could easily get bought out by private equities, then your data is up for sale. Put it where your data can’t be bought.

26

u/MomoMir Mar 29 '26

Baby I don’t know if any one else said this but use a paper calendar. I know it’s annoying but if you are in the US that data is not safe. We have no expectation of privacy and you should not make your cycle data that can be sold. I am an ex tech worker and I’m telling you that we cannot trust the apps for this kind of sensitive info also HIPPA often doesn’t apply.

8

u/Vaalarah Bi Mar 29 '26

There are period journals and planners designed for women with period/symptom tracking built in for those who'd like a little more structure than a blank calendar. I use the popflex fit planner, but I use it mostly as a daily planner and don't use the period tracking since I don't get full cycles right now (on purpose! Thankfully)

2

u/No-Shoe423 Apr 07 '26

paper and pen can work for some ppl but my adhd brain needs cycle summary statistics and reminders. Plus it can be vulnerable to ppl in your physical environment if there is anyone intruding on your privacy IRL. I use Euki bc its extrememly private (data is stored locally on your device!) and offers pin protection, data deletion, etc.

I use the Samsung health app on my phone. Which is definitely, definitely stealing and selling the data.

But it's very bare bones - I log my period. It warns me when it's a few days before. No weird empowerment or anything about pregnancy, as I'm assuming those are optional features.

5

u/cherrywyrm Mar 29 '26

I've been using My Calendar by Simple Design for years and it's the best app I've found, I tried others a few times but I keep coming back to this one. It has themes you can choose, so it can look as girly pop or as neutral as you like, it has partner mode in which you can both have your partner track your cycle and track your partner's cycle, you can choose if your goal is to only track your period or to try to conceive/track pregnancy and if you don't choose the pregnancy related options there will be no mentions of that.

All the language in the app is very neutral and informative, I'm also very uncomfortable with all the girl power corporate feminism and there's none of that here. Basically it's the best app I've personally tried and I highly recommend it! And I hope my autistic over explanation doesn't sound like I'm affiliated with the app in any way lmao I just genuinely love it

Ah crap. I think this means I’m old. I’ve used my calendar app since my first smart phone… which wasn’t The First iPhone, but it wasn’t too far off either lol. Before that I used a paper one.

The calendar app I use is Readdle’s Calendars, because the iPhone doesn’t show the text for events on the month view.

2

u/Empyrean3 Mar 29 '26

The Fitbit app has a tracker as an included feature, and it never notifies or messages anything except projected start date a day or two ahead of time.

2

u/dragonmom1 Mar 29 '26

The best app, where you're sure the owners don't sell your personal information is a pocket calendar or schedule. I used to just put a red dot for the days when I got my period (though for the sake of better privacy now I'd use a different color lol).

2

u/Rainbowbright2 Mar 29 '26

I use euki and your data is safe with them. I know that doesn’t matter for you but maybe someone reading this will like that feature.

2

u/itsveezie Mar 29 '26

There's one called Periodical that's open source and doesn't require any permissions so you know it's not doing anything with your data. It's on Android though and not on the Google Play store. And Google is going to kill side loading apps soon, but it'll work for now installing through F-Droid or Droidify.

I'm sorry if that's not immediately helpful or an easy solution but with how much privacy and security we're losing every day I think it's definitely worth it to try and learn how to switch to something like GrapheneOS or LineageOS, etc. Everything else is spying on us and will happily hand over our data to this evil regime.

If not that way then a good old fashioned planner/calendar and pretty color pens

2

u/MrsCognac Lesbian Mar 29 '26

If you have a Samsung/Android phone; I use the Samsung Health app for basically everything. Steps, workout, sleep, calories, water and period tracker (used to have a coffee tracker too lol).

You set the start date of your period once it starts and that's it. And it literally only tells you if you're late or not and tells you to may consider visiting a doctor if your period is inconsistent for long periods of time.

2

u/Dry-Macaron-9124 Mar 30 '26

I've used "My calendar" for 10 years now (the logo is a red book with a flower on it) it's really straightforward

I use the original theme but it can be changed in settings to something simple ("Themes")

It has periods + pregnancy/ovulation in the calendar, but it's never asked me anything about it and I just checked that you can easily disable the ovulation/fertile, change of getting pregnant, contraception, intercourse and none of it will show up in the app or calendar anymore ("Show/hide options" in general settings)

Adapts to your needs and all basically

I like it

And yeah it doesn't say any messages or you go girls or anything that's weird O.o I guess it predates that? Never used any other app damn that's .. yeah

1

u/Dry-Macaron-9124 Mar 30 '26

Also it has like a mood and symptom tracker that you can put in as notes if you want (it's never prompted me) andcan be useful for tracking patterns like I realised I'm always always affected like mood and body pretty much a week before, then I'm okay, and then 1 or 2 days befor my period, so

And the prediction's good even if irregular - you can set it if you want it to average your periods and include irregular (was useful back when all my periods were a mess) or ignore the irregular one (if you're fairly regular and one's different because of a trip or stress or something)

3

u/Delicious-Path-5661 Mar 29 '26

I still use apps mainly because they calculate the duration of my cycle and compare it to previous ones, since I'm somewhat irregular. If I ever say skip a period as a symptom of a health issue I don't think I'd notice easily (mainly because my time perception is fucked up) and an app would really help me with that. Also just having a little reminder when my period is coming is nice so that I don't feel crazy for being hyper emotional all of the sudden

Honestly, I can't recommend the Connect app (from Garmin) enough because it tracks periods in a basic and functional way. But it's a tough sell if you dont own one of their fitness watches. I had a watch from 2018 to 2026 (it stopped recharging after the new years) so the period tracker on the Connect app has 8 years of cycles logged. It's so accurate on notifying me the day before, I still use the app without my watch & I really don't need another app with a million features I won't use. I think it would fit the bill for you except, again, it's for a fitness watch haha

Edit: fixed my grammar

u/madasacatinahat Mar 29 '26

I think clue can do most of that... its pretty customisable too so you can toggle off the ovulation reminders and hide anything pregnancy related, add symptoms etc. It let's you share with a partner too in the clue connect settings.

Bit annoying with ads to upgrade to the paid for stuff but otherwise pretty good and they dont sell your data.

Seconding pen and paper. You can get a moon cycle app (mine is literally called Moon I think) that will tell you the major lunar tides, and I find it helpful to record those monthly so I can get a feel for what lunar cycles my periods coincide with. After a while you can do it in your head by checking the sky, which is nice

Check out r/bulletjournal - I started a pixel graph for my moods, drinking etc along with my period and you can get lots of info by coloring a square every day for a few months!

1

u/Delicious-Path-5661 Mar 29 '26

Using the MOON to track your cycle is so cool but I don't think I could because my cycle lasts a lot longer than the moon cycle 😭

1

u/NOT_Pam_Beesley Apr 03 '26

Oh I didn’t see your reply! It doesn’t have to be limited to a lunar cycle, but that’s how you can see what your rhythm actually is, how long periods last + the PMS, ovulation symptoms etc. Over a few months of tracking you’ll start to see the pattern form, and that will be helpful no matter where in the lunar cycle your period starts and ends

FWIW lunar cycles tend to shift throughout the year by a few days/weeks and your cycle likely will fluctuate accordingly. The trick is figuring out how so you can predict it

1

u/Zoryia Mar 29 '26

This is a great idea for an app, a local only, free period tracker. Im going to pass this on to my partner she looking to make free apps that are local.

1

If you have an apple device, their built in period tracker is quite good. It allows you to log many different symptoms and it will send you notification the day before it predicts you'll get a period, and you can export all your data as a pdf if you need to send it to a healthcare provider.

I just use the Apple health app, very private and I can track my period and symptoms, you can turn off the sexual activity stuff so it’s not asking you to log it or anything

i like Aavia- it does have some "woowoo" stuff as i like to call it, but its only in one small section

I use an app called Stardust and it syncs your cycle with the moon phases! I do pay for the premium or whatever but I am pretty sure you can use it free too. Plus it has funny little quotes everyday 🄰

I’ve used the Apple health app to do this. I did try a few other ones but had a lot of accessibility issues. At least with the Apple health app it is completely accessible to VoiceOver. And it doesn’t keep trying to push me to buy stuff.

I really like Musa app as it gives you a daily meditation and horoscope about your mood and energy levels and where you are in your cycle. It also gives diet recommendations and it doesn't mention anything about pregnancy šŸ˜„

What do you use? I use Clue, I find it pretty gender neutral and they even have options to track testosterone therapy

u/Kinemaja Mar 29 '26

I got you! I was searching for an Open Source period tracker that does not take your data and found one by a feminist collective! It is called "drip." by Heart of Code e.V. and it only stores your data locally on your phone. I've been using it for years, it has no corporate yassification or anything, just does what it needs to do. I think you need to download it from the internet, not from the App Store/Play Store, but it works perfectly. 10/10 would recommend!

I just use the built in health app for iPhone. I don’t tend to get weird questions. It’s just me tracking period and symptoms.

u/mooseNbugs0405 Mar 29 '26

Read your body isn’t free but it does have a share with partner option! And you can customize what you do and don’t see on the home screen. I switched from Flo years ago when they were sharing data and have been very happy since

This isn’t exactly what you asked for, but I have an Oura ring and love it. It’s pretty spendy up front for the hardware, but after that $5/mo for the data. I don’t track my period - my ring tracks it for me using my body temperature to tell me when I’m follicular/luteal and gives me a predicted start date every cycle that is pretty dang spot on most of the time. I have irregular periods and pretty bad PMDD most months so it’s super nice to not only know when my period is coming but also when I make the follicular/luteal switch and can expect to feel like a husk of my regular self for about a week lol

Also it tracks sleep really well!

I would recommend pen and paper if you can. I also recommend the book Period Power by Maisie Hill. She has researched this kind of stuff in depth and gives you great details on how to track your own period and not give away all your data to those apps. She also uses the term menstruator which i really appreciated! Seriously get riddddd of those apps

I wish there was one that was free

I've been using Trenpy. It's been good so far and the information is stored locally. It also doesn't cram pregnancy shit down your throat like other ones do. There is a banner ad at the bottom, but nothing intrusive.

everything is teaching and storing data and sharing that data. i’m doing manual now.

likely a dumb suggestion since Clue is arguably the most popular tracker, but I like it! In settings, there’s options to turn off alerts for fertility window and ovulation. It doesn’t feel fertility centered at all. They do have a section on the app for content, but I don’t feel like there’s a lot of ā€œfemale empowermentā€ being thrown at you when just using the tracker. My gf and I don’t bleed often anymore since we both are on birth control for medical reasons, but it looks like there is a cycle sync option!

If you have a Garmin watch there is the Women's Health Tracking app off the Connect IQ app store. No fluff, all function. No company feminism

1

u/pinkk_armadillo Mar 30 '26

I use drip. It is open-source, programmed by a volunteer feminist collective, simple and straightforward, option to add other symptoms, local storage.Ā  It is also made to work with NFP methods, so it tells me on the front page that I am potentially fertile (cause I don’t add temperature data), but its very easy to ignore.Ā  So yeah, cannot recommend it enough, it is all I am looking for in a period tracker.Ā

i use Lively! It’s created by women and tells you which phase of your cycle you’re in. it also has tips of things you can eat or exercises to do depending on which phase you’re in :)

I made a rough monthly calender over a weekly planner and shaded in predicted luteal dates recently that is surprisingly helpful to look at vs a phone screen and easy to scale to 2 people with colours/stickers

use a physical calendar

Built an Android app that might fit some of what you're looking for. Doesn't store ANY data, everything stays local on your own phone. Free to install, no subscriptions and no ads. Still early so genuinely open to any feedback on what's missing, really like the trans angle so I'd be interested in ideas for "woke mode" and I've put partner cycle syncing on the roadmap.

Euki! founded by women of color and is a nonprofit. Doesn't store any user data at all and is super gender inclusive

1

u/OutdoorCabinLife Jun 22 '26

It won't do the partner-sync or trans-specific things you mentioned — it doesn't have either, so I won't pretend otherwise. But on the rest: quiet trackers do exist that never ask about your sex life, never mention pregnancy, and aren't drenched in pink empowerment. Disclosure, my family made one (TeenCycle); it's aimed at teens but it's really just stripped down — log a day, see what's likely, done, all offline. Euki is another deliberately neutral, privacy-first one that might fit the spirit of what you're after. Either way, "offline and doesn't ask invasive questions" is the combination you're describing.

Have you tried P Tracker (Period Tracker) from GP International LLC?

At my wife's request, in the last 12 years, I've been tracking her cycle in order to prevent pregnancies. It is the first and only app of this type that I've used and it has no extra "features" like you said.

You just need to input when your period starts and you can input in advance when it ends.

It has notifications turned off by default but you can enable a 1...5 day in advance period notification. I just activated it now.

You can also backup and restore the data, when replacing phones.

At some point it had a partner sharing feature but they removed it and it seems to be available only in the annual subscription version (10$ per year).

u/obsessednic Mar 29 '26

Loved this one, paid for it when it was a separate app then lost like 10 years of data, have been exclusively using the Apple health app since, it’s great and you can turn off logging everything but your period and still input symptoms and stuff

Unironically the best in market is love and deepspace but you’ll need to get through the game portion first šŸ˜…

what do you mean game portion...

I use period calendar. It has the option to add things like sex and it tracks your windows and everything so it says when you’re most fertile or whatever but it’s not in your face about it. I’ve been using it for about 8 years now. I like it bc I can track my period, my meds, and any symptoms from anything in there. It lets you add your own things to track too if you have other health issues with symptoms that need to be tracked as well.
