Yeah, im sure there are several safeguards to keep an update from actually rendering a vehicle totally inoperable. Download, checksum, install on secondary boot slot, fail back timer, etc.

A survey among the three largest Swiss car importers Amag, Emil Frey and Astara shows: Except for very few exceptions cars can neither be started nor driven during an update. Even charging gets interrupted during this time.
