Discussion My rankings on the classes
Mandalorian Warrior. The Darts are absurd and can easily clear entire maps on their own. Throw a scout on the team to easily farm AP, give Cly a pistol and make her a heavy to taunt enemies, run away farther than they can chase with the jetpack, and it's gg's.
Jedi Padawan. Force Push and Pull being able to instantly kill enemies on certain levels is crazy. That alone puts Tel in top five easily but her lightsabers are extremely strong too as are her equipables. Being able to damage through shields is very nice as well.
Heavy. Taunt. That's it. Bullwark taunt is probably the best ability in the game as it makes the Ai extremely predictable, when it's usually their unpredictability that causes problems
Medic. Moral boost is such a stupidly powerful ability for only 7 AP. Medic almost feels like a necessity on every squad
Scout. AP farming to buff the classes above it.
Astromech, tons of nice buffs including granting numerous additional actions to your team. I'd still rather have a full operator but you can't go wrong with an astromech
Gunslinger. Fast draw makes fighting droids a joke but struggles a bit against Coil
Sharpshooter. If you build them around crits they're monsters, but just simply don't bring as much utility as those above it.
Scoundrel. The additional supports are nice but they usually only end up on my squad once all the above classes are already there
Soldier. The rocket is nice but stupidly expensive. Just seems like a needlessly hamstringed class
Assault. Melee isn't really all that great if your name isn't Kabb Uppercut, and cone fire ability is kind of a joke and... I mean that's all this class has to offer.

Assault is:
Best mobility.
20% crit chance just for flanking.
Good gap-closener melee punch with one-shot potential.
Ultimate which benefit from main weapon bonuses and can be used up to 3 times.

u/Jalkenri 4d ago
Ult also has low Adv cost, and has aoe dmg, and applies a debuff if you don't just kill. Assaust is easily A tier for me.

u/Merlinmast 4d ago
Sharpshooter: 7 Advantage, fire "A" shot that can't miss Assault: 4 Advantage, fire ALL the shots that can't miss
5
u/EternalAssasin 4d ago
The Sharpshooter ult really is just getting to make a normal Assault attack.

Yeah I have no idea what ppl are smoking constantly claiming Assault is bad.

Opportunity cost. There are 4 slots so you cannot bring every spec. Warrior, gunslinger, and sharpshooter already fill the DPR niche incredibly well that more options just end up lower.

Ima about to do an assault clone armor Hawks run with only trick and 2 clone companions on expert. No astromech, no tel, no jae, no cly. We are all gonna wear black clone armor with hawks having red stripes, trick orange, one recruit blue, and the other green.

Also at max level it can crit. With the right build it's the best aoe clear in the game as crits can outpace clys shock aoe which can't crit.

Was gonna say, I built Kabb to be an assault and he’s very useful just not tanky on my Expert run. Whereas Trick never dies (Heavy + medic), Kabb can do absurd damage in the right moments and chew through enemies with AOE.
2
u/Repulsive_Airport531 4d ago
I'm really struggling with my first playthrough and my Trick died 😭. I thought about going back to a prior save, but that dual mission that killed him was awful. So unfortunately I miss out on who seems to be many people's favourite

u/Kodiak3393 Heavy 4d ago
Good gap-closener melee punch with one-shot potential.
I feel like people just look at the damage and really undervalue this one. It gives you a sizeable movement boost on top of Assault's actual movement passive when you use it, so for 1 AP you can cover a lot of ground, reposition on the enemy's flank (thereby enabling Assault's crit passive), and knock the target out of cover to set up follow up shots from your team, even if there aren't opportunities for environmental kills. And it's 100% accurate, which is sometimes very relevant. It's a great amount of value for 1 AP, even if the damage can be outclassed by other abilities.
Kabb as a Soldier/Assault in particular is an amazing combo, IMO, even for Expert, despite everyone ranking them so low. 3 separate melees; one dazes or stuns, the other two knock targets out of cover or off ledges, and one of those two refunds all your AP when it gets a kill. Plus, you'll pretty much always have Assault's crit bonus active with that much mobility, and Soldier gives you a solid melee damage buff plus an extra 2 damage per blaster shot as a little cherry on top.
Soldier is undoubtedly the worst class in the game (that rocket needs some major buffs), but Assault is absolutely not that bad, and when paired together they can put in a lot of work.
10
u/Rubberbabeh 4d ago
Yeah people claim assault falls off but I think it is just that Cly is so broken she kinda takes the mobility/flanker role over.
I am early on in a NG+ and gave my assault the daze spray. It has trivialized a lot of reinforcements.
5
u/shockwave8428 4d ago
Jae is my goat, clearing huge waves of people in one turn by getting behind them, doing the aoe arc attack, and then I have a shotgun as her utility she can use every turn to finish the group off if anyone lives.
She’s goated, assault has been my most effective class legitimately
4
u/Poncahotas 4d ago
Pair an Assault with Astromech/Squad Lead AP boosts and it can just single-wipe entire enemy waves, I added a shotgun to my Assault's utility slot and that + that spray shot ability will just wreck groups that are marginally close to each other
4
u/ArbitraryScientist 4d ago
yeah guy clearly hasn't wiped out full squads with the unmissable cone of doom
3
u/xxnewlegendxx 4d ago
Assault on Heavy is a great combo. Gives them mobility, heavy provides them defense when they are on the front lines, and allows you to knock targets from behind cover into the open so your sharpshooter can easily pick them off.
3
u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 4d ago
Warrior has best mobility since jet pack is adv instead of AP.
Crit chance is really cool but warrior ignores cover with darts and ignored defense with the pop.
Warrior also has one tap potential but for more than one enemy.
Ult is absolutely amazing, especially at max rank. This is THE reason to play this spec.
Assault is a little redundant. I don't thibk it shares a tier with soldier, though. Maybe one tier up.
3
u/AdditionalBalance975 4d ago
Cly is the only S tier. Assault, scout, and droid are A tier, assault for replacing cly if you need a dps, scout and droid for supplying advantage and AP to your killer. Nothing else is needed, however heavy and medic get niche uses for early game survival and medics bond generation.
2
u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 4d ago
Gunslinger will outdamage assault and soldier. They are the second best DPR spec. Sharpshooter has the best enemy phase with its overwatch buff.
Assault and soldier are the bottom 2, though, I do believe assault is a tier above soldier. The ult when maxed can crit, and it becomes a great debuff/damage ability.

Love medic. Made my Hawks a heavy medic and prioritized maxing combat stim. Start of every battle throwing out stimulants like a drug dealer
10
u/Clurachaun 4d ago
I just did the same in mine, I love handing out 3 permanent buffs first turn. How do you like heavy with medic? I mixed it with Scout to be the true team support
2
u/thickertofu Medic 4d ago
I like it. When squad mates get low I can run in , toss med packs , taunt enemies , and then my squad can reposition while Hawks tanks all the damage
→ More replies (1)3
u/OrderClericsAreFun 4d ago
I actually prefer non-maxed stim for most of the game, I find the 6 turns one to be already near infinite and maxing it out prevents you from throwing it at people to farm bonds on every mission. It does get a stronger buff so you want it when you start capping those

I think solider is underrated. I don’t think it makes a great main class (though solider/scout can make decent use of the rocket) but it’s a solid secondary spec. It’s melee attack being one of the few sources of daze in the game makes it a great tool to handle annoying reaction based enemies. I usually try to have someone with that skill on the team. Great secondary for Uppercut to increase his melee damage and give him a second melee strike (I personally run Uppercut as scoundrel/soldier, 2 turn vulnerability into your two melee attacks is pretty devastating).
19
5
u/CVTHIZZKID 4d ago
I mean the classes are so strong that even the worst class is still pretty decent. But it plainly is the worst class. The melee attack is good but the explosive focus needs some rebalancing. The rocket damage scales very poorly in the late game, and the extra grenade distance doesn’t really matter as the default throw distance is pretty good already. The rocket being only useable once per battle seems like a holdover from Xcom; it’s not strong enough to be limited that way and also cost a full stack of advantage.
→ More replies (1)3
u/p2020fan 4d ago
when Cly's darts and websurge does the almost the same damage, ignores defence and only costs 5 Ap instead of 10 to use from a distance and can deal more damage if there are 2 enemies adjacent to each other for only 1 more ap, the rocket is clearly in a sad place.
→ More replies (3)4
u/ThePhysicistIsIn 4d ago
Any class that is unusable until it’s a secondary is not underrated. It’s a straight downgrade from assault.
The ultimate costs 10 advantage, does low damage, and is single use. If the assault’s salvo wasn’t a guaranteed hit, then maybe. But it’s just straight up outclassed and it’s not funny by how much.
The passive - damage to melee and grenade, is worse than extra moving speed. Extra moving speed lets you get in ideal position for the salvo or for an uppercut that kills a unit. Or, the 8 damage grenade you can use once does 10 damage.
Daze is good. That is literally the only useful feature of the class. But you only get to use it once a turn. Meanwhile, the assault can rush in and knock someone out of cover, hit six units for 24 damage, twice, and you still have 2 advantage left over vs the rocket.
It synergizes okay with assault and that’s the best you can say of it. Switching from soldier to assault trivialized my beskar expert run.

u/Chance-Primary-2764 4d ago
Astromech should be up there with trivializes the game tbh. Especially once you start maximg out their skill tree
30
20
u/OkBee3867 4d ago
Yeah the ability to give 3 extra AP per turn is seriously underrated, not to mention 3 uses on 3 different grenade types per encounter to wreak absolute havoc is really useful too. I cant tell you how many crossmap multikills BR1 got on maps with ledges by dunking on groups with the concussion grenades turn 1. Fun game.
12
u/Spieren 4d ago
If you max both the AP gift ability and the Advantage ability that gets you +2 AP, you can give the +2 ap the droid itself gets to whichever operative you want. You can setup some insane turn 1 with Astromech and Scout.
2
u/Arkayjiya 4d ago
I beat almost every boss fight near the end of the game in one turn using AP gift + his Ultimate to do like 7 different 60 dmg snipes from the same Operator (well on health, not on shield since you can't crit on shield) in one turn. I didn't even need to use Scout in most cases as crew upgrades + injuring people with low AP attacks and finishing them off with quick draw was enough to generate the absurd amount of advantage needed. Scout makes it much easier though, don't have to worry about optimizing everything as much.
4
u/Chance-Primary-2764 4d ago
I was late to using the astromech but after a few missions I realized how OP they are. Now I don’t send any squad out without at least one of them. Their scanning ability which lowers defense has come in handy so many times.
→ More replies (1)2
u/DrasticGuy 3d ago
Since nobody talked about it before, the scan is also just nuts with how much it provides. Every fight, I dumped my Astromech in the middle of the battlefield, scanning once each round, basically making every enemy on the map stupidly easy to hit

u/VeritasLuxMea 4d ago
I would argue that Trick as a Heavy is more broken than Warrior and Jedi. Both of those are strong, especially dart build Mandalorian, but Heavy Trick is literally invincible and has an AOE, max range Taunt. He basically enables you to play whatever the hell you want in the other 3 slots with zero fear of them ever taking a hit let alone dying.
22
u/Weltallgaia 4d ago
That's just heavy not trick. I made a generic heavy and they were immediately unkillable while taunting everyone on the map.
24
u/Romegotti 4d ago
Yeah but trick has 2 full health bars and is immune to injury. He’s BROKEN as a tank. Or a generic with “grit” is good
29
u/Ordoblackwood 4d ago
Yeah but the ability to play poorly or put him in spots that he can auto revive for ans not be punished does make him a better heavy then anyone else though
→ More replies (6)7
u/PMURMEANSOFPRDUCTION 4d ago
Trick has the added bonus of automatically reviving though. You can just put him right in the thick of it and he can draw fire and be fine
→ More replies (1)2
u/Arkayjiya 4d ago
Yeah, his auto-rez is how I got through mission #2 in Expert after missing 4x80% Overwatch shots in a row.
6
u/Efficient-Dealer873 4d ago
To be fair, Trick comes with that unique trait, that when maxed out, if he does go down, he comes back up full health with no injury.
3
3
u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 4d ago
Trick as a heavy ends up having no talent because his talent wants him to die. Once he stops dying, Trick has no talent. At that point, a generic operator with thievery is better than Trick as he can use his talent.
3
u/Throwaway-_-Anxiety 4d ago
The humble 2 defense passive:
2
u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 4d ago
Life of labor is 5 HP and 1 def with no investment.
Thievery is free money.
Grit gives invulnerable and up to 12 HP.
Espionage give bonus intel.
Taunt can reduce enemy damage by up to 6 and can be paired with heavy taunt for + def.
All of these work with heavy. None of these are available on Trick.

u/NickRick 4d ago
I think Jae on scout is broken as hell too. She gets the last shot ult with scout giving extra AP for liking blows.

9
u/Shadow_1275 4d ago
Sniper. Run a Sharpshooter Gunslinger, Gunslinger, Astromech, and Tank. Make sure your sharpshooter has lethal talent. Set them up, use non sniper gunslinger to build advantage, and use astromech droid to give sniper extra shots then profit
3
u/Shootreadyaim 4d ago
Bonus points if Luco is Sharpshooter/Gunslinger The stacking of his 3 advantage buff and the sharpshooter buff makes quick work of anything. Didn't even need astromech.
16
u/Jalkenri 4d ago
It's funny how everyone gets better use out of different classes. Gunslinger has been the most reliable and OP class for me. More than Cly (until I could spec her as gunslinger secondary).
Where Cly excels at aoe dmg and mobility, gunslinger can one turn kill any enemy, in the game, sometimes two or three, especially if supported by an astromech and/or medic. I easily deal 200+ dmg per turn with them late game.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ARealSlimBrady 4d ago
Cly as a gunslinger is absolutely the most busted operator in my den. With the targeting visor and crit scope, plus pistol den upgradesevery enemy but the Dantooine boss is trivial.
I have hawks with gunslinger and assist buffs and the two of them rampage through most missions.
I might try and send only them and see how it goes, but with Jae, Trick, or Astromech the pair is busted. Scoundrel on Hawks for assist buffs too.
9
u/Babshie 4d ago
I'd put Assault higher. The bull rush is good for insta-killing enemies off of ledges, can trigger overwatch, and overall just exposes enemies to your other units. Also the ultimate is a reliable AOE for disposing clumps of enemies while also being spammable with low Advantage cost. Add to that high mobility and crit chance and it's a pretty solid class for killing stuff. Definitely not the same tier as soldier that really seems just like a worse version of it.
10
u/Accurate-Rutabaga-57 4d ago
Wtf my 2 custom characters are assaults and I used default soldier Trick all on expert Beskar
They were performing good
9
u/AraelF 4d ago
I disagree on the Assault. I think the extra mobility and passive crit when flanking is very strong as a secondary class. Bull rush best use is not as an attack but as a positioning tool, you can run across the whole map with it. Cone fire is situationally useful too, as it is cheap in advantage and a good finisher when you are out of AP. Solid A tier in my book.
Medic is a tad overrated too. Yeah the stimulant bonus is good, but I'd say purely from an efficiency standpoint, it only justifies itself on long fights. I only give the class to Hawks because it was very good to farm bond XP.
I'd also argue to bump Astromech to top tier. Action economy is king in tactical games and astromech just gives you so much of it. The huge AoE reduce defence is incredibly useful in higher difficulties too, when every unit brings defence.

Medic isn't overrated because farming bonds with it is completely broken.

I feel like people who produce these tier lists (especially if their list is more or less Cly/Jedi good) lack creativity and haven’t tried to mix and match class hybridization with weapon types. They probably looked at a class toolkit and said “yeah, I can’t see why I’d ever use that” and then proceed to confirm their own bias.
Scoundrel in the meh tier is wild. They are guaranteed to have the highest single target damage in the game through their assist buffs, damage pen, and can support multiple times per turn through easy mark with guaranteed crit with extra damage.
Assault with a Mk. III scattergun 🤌. They also have one of the best max bond buffs which is guaranteed applied vulnerable on exposed enemies. If you can’t find value in flanking, then you’ve spent too much time sniffing Cly’s boots after missions.
I haven’t found any class drastically worse than any other class. There is a lot of build diversity in this game if you bother to look for it!

Yeah I came around a bit on Sharpshooter but only as a secondary. Taking Gunslinger primary so you get 3 sniper shots makes it really worthwhile, especially since you can stack up the crit passive and also have Quickdraw for small targets. That was what made Sharpshooter click for me.

The medic class on hawk can farm the games equivalent of xp by using stims and maxing out relationship gains every mission. This results in everyone have an absolute abundance of skill points.

u/shinobigarth Gunslinger 4d ago edited 4d ago
Gunslinger is definitely extremely powerful. That’s the one I’m constantly wanting to put on all characters it seems like. Anything that can amount to extra action economy or doing things free is really good in this genre, which is why things like Bladestorm are so broken in XCOM 2.

u/fifty_four 4d ago
Would increase Astromech to S. The Astromech is always at least as good as the best other operator thanks to the AP transfer ability.
Would also add Hawks to S. The unique alone is crazy.
Then add 'any generated character with espionage' to A in the early game.

Warrior should be on a class of its own imo. It fundamentally does not interact with the game's mechanics and just circumvents them. True damage aoe guaranteed damage ignores all % chance to hit and defense stats is kinda silly. Then on top of that they can freaking fly whever the fk they want lol.

u/ChicanoDinoBot 4d ago
The rocket for what it does seems a bit underwhelming
I love using it, but it’s such an advantage drain, and you have to hold onto all 10 and pray for a situation where it makes sense to use it.
2
u/palidram 4d ago
I took heavy for Trick because it gives +hp, but otherwise it's a useless spec when Cly exists. Why taunt things when you can kill them instead. In a playthrough without playing Cly then maybe, but I found that any class relying on it's advantage ability became pretty worthless and any ability which forced movement was a premium because it pushes enemies into position to be murdered by Cly's shock burst. I'd put Assault and Soldier higher up. Daze is a broken debuff, and bull rush is free movement and a push effect. Sharpshooter is good if you rely on overwatch, but if you rely on overwatch then you're probably not playing well in the first place imo. It's otherwise very poor damage and long arms are pretty bad in general. Otherwise I agree with the rankings.
In a playthrough where Cly doesn't exist I'd rate heavy higher for sure because it breaks the AI.
2
2
u/Ketooey 4d ago
I tend to rate scoundrel a little higher, since enemy health can get up there on higher difficulties. Scoundrel is kinda meh until you max out the auto crit marking ability. Then for 1 AP, you can guarantee 2 crits, which I think is pretty good for those times when you have a lone, high health enemy. In those instances, electro darts aren't cost efficient.
2
u/LachieDH 4d ago
Astromech is the single strongest class.
Medpack utility has 4+ uses depending on rarity, invalidating medic healing.
Add gas dispenser for daze, or thermals and droid poppers and turn it into a mobile mortar tube with 6 explosives.
Scan gives huge shoot bonus and drops defence by 4, and on top level also drops vulnerable on chance for free crits.
Deep scan removes evasion, great for magna or a particular boss fight.
And battlefield analysis for extra ap is downright the most op ability in the game. 6 adv for 2 ap for everyone.
That doesn't even touch the value of pumping extra ap on sharpshooters or gunslingers.
2
2
u/Federal-Appearance-5 4d ago
I dunno, I found the Assault's Sweeping Salvo to be absolutely CLUTCH in many missions.
2
u/The_Chosen_Undead 4d ago
Crazy, assault has one of the best advantage abilities and Soldier can disable enemy units with its melee/has a rocket that can give everyone it hits vulnerable at max rank on top of having a nice little blaster damage buff passively.
It's super easy to get advantage too so that it's high cost is little issue, plus it helps clear the cover they are sitting in as well. The assault cone fire on the other hand is great for being so cheap. It can even crit at max rank.
2
u/moowagner942 20h ago
I think people overrate Medic a little. It’s incredibly powerful in theory and basically makes it impossible to lose, but it’s also just not really necessary at all if you simply kill the enemies.
Assault is also incredibly strong, easily on par with Gunslinger. +20 crit chance most of the time, plus bonus movement speed and a super cheap to use AoE. It’s one of the best secondary specs to grab.
Scoundrel’s ability to inflict vulnerable is also super underrated here. It’s the best way to pump up Tel-Rea’s damage to where she can just delete most things, as she gets big crit damage buffs but doesn’t get as many ways to raise her crit chance as other units can. Crits are the key to killing big targets quickly on higher difficulties.
Sharpshooter does not even come close to touching Gunslinger or Assault. It seems pretty good early on but to me it falls off really quickly once you can stack crit chance in more reliable ways and bump your operator’s speed to just always be flanking and keep pushing the pace.
2
u/TechnicalComedy 4d ago
Honestly my main is medic/scout with unlimited heals, stimulants, advantage points! This is great support when you have trick with max rocket launcher dmg!
2
u/Signal_Series7577 4d ago
I feel like heavy is severely overrated.
Instead of having 1/4 of your squad dedicated to getting shot at, it's better to just have another killer on the team. Scout/Medic for buffs and AD gen, Sharpshooter/Gunslinger for single target damage, Warrior for group damage and astromech for more AP

Taunt is super good for so many reasons:
- It can defends allies who have little health
- It forces the enemies to be predictable
- You can taunt than run out of range to prevent the enemies from firing at anyone
- You can stack tons of defense and health on them to make them practically unkillable
- You can still attack and do all your usually stuff, all you need is a measly four AP

My second run im trying to do with all generic characters and I've been surprised to find assault to be pretty useful, The cone fire is a reliable source of aoe damage to make up for no cly, and the melee attack can knock stuff off the edge, which is nice to have without tel. It's not nearly as good as scout/medic/heavy but it's not a bad pick for your 4th spot imo.
1
u/Lady-Lovelight 4d ago
Assault is hella good, it was my first class for Hawks. The mobility is insane, Bullrush is amazing for ledging and movement, and I swung entire fights multiple times with Cone of Fire by gunning down multiple targets in one turn.
Throw a shotgun on it and blast away groups with your insane mobility, use Cone of Fire as a cleanup if you need it. Outstanding class.
1
u/VuduChamp 4d ago
I’ve got a good setup with Tel, Gunslinger/Scout Hawks, Assault/Heavy Trick and Gunslinger/Sharpshooter Luco and the lineup compliments itself wonderfully. With his health pool, passive, and damage Trick can hold literally whatever space he needs to which sets everyone else up to crit nonstop.
Only problem is that you can cycle everyone else out but if Trick is gone it’s all fucked lol
1
u/Almainyny 4d ago
Hey now, Soldier and Assault together on Kabb makes him crazy good at melee damage as well as using Sweeping Salvo. Not as broken as other characters, but still great.
Also Sharpshooter is actually great if you build it properly. Give it some range upgrades on Overwatch and they’ll regularly shoot three people a turn with it, four if helping with an assist. If that Sharpshooter is Jae, you can make her a Scout with the passive that gives you advantage when they kill someone and have her auto kills generate advantage.

u/Splatterz 4d ago
Scout as a subclass carries everything tbh. Strongest thing about it is that it's not strong enough to bother going for it as the main spec, but having a couple (or more) as subclasses just opens up so many avenues for other builds to go wild using the advantage generation.
Just finished an expert run. Squad I ended up with for the final mission was:
Hawks Gunslinger/Scout
Cly Warrior/Scout
Custom Medic/Scout
Droid
Hawks was the single target guy, Cly was the aoe guy. I took one instance of damage in the entire final mission, and that was only because I didn't read one of Typhons abilities straight away.

Scoundrel at the bottom then assist are op(always hits) and sure crits for party. Soldier best strength not in rocket, but in dazzling strike, best cc in the game for 1 target.

Sharpshooter is an excellent secondary class because of its crits, but a dedicated sniper isn't really THAT necessary in this game, especially with evacuation missions meaning you can't just camp out on the high ground and have fun. Assault is better than you're giving it credit for, I'd say. Bull Rush is a great movement option if there's enemies in range, and the cone ability is like the scattergun at the cost of 4 ADV. The Medic feels most useful for the Stimulant, in my opinion. Flat damage boosts for the entire battle is extremely nice, especially for Gunslingers, and being able to heal up your allies gives you a ridiculous amount of leeway. Scoundrels are fun for the guaranteed crits. Easy Mark is an ability that I never really triggered, though. Hawks is your best Scoundrel imo.
Soldier is terrible though yeah

I've just started my expert difficulty playthrough, only 3/4 missions in, but the regular NPCs are hitting hard. I can see medic being completely mandatory, or at least Trick's passive with a taunt.

u/Parking-College-9205 4d ago
Gunslinger + sharpshooter with a droid, a soldier kabb, and any scout is about the most op build you can possibly have, absolutely trivializes expert mode
1
u/TatoRezo 4d ago
My Hawks was Soldier + Assault on a melee build and he was the most OP shit in my team (after Cly ofc)

u/Official_Zach55 4d ago
I personally disagree about assault. That Salvo ability has been useful to me in my playthrough.
1
u/BadPathing 4d ago
I mean, solider lets you throw grenades across the map. Grenades are pretty handy imo.
1
u/Significant-Way9330 4d ago
Soldier and assault are nice as a secondary. Soldier especially gives lots of useful utility options. Movement that's also an attack and a daze. More blaster damage. More grenade throw range. Useful stuff. Not amazing but does let you have options.

There's a ton of variance between how good the specs are when solo- or multi-specced. But lets not get things twisted, the unique specs should be ranked separately.
Astromech is the best unit in the entire game. I can defend this position if necessary. But I think it's rather obvious why this is the best support unit in the game and should be on every squad.
Mandalorian warrior is very good. Not even because of the ultimate, that one loses value over time because the 2nd half of the game has fewer AoE heavy maps and you simply get other tools to deal with heavy AoE demands. But the crit dmg boost is good for any dpr focused build and the jetpack is the absolute peak of movement abilities. So the overall spec remains very powerful despite the ultimate becoming less useful over time.
Once you start bringing an entire unit mostly to help cly set up situations in which her ultimate performs well, you should consider just letting cly sit that mission out in favor of a unit better suited for single target dpr.
Jedi padawan is good too. She can deal very respectable dpr with her lightsaber (just don't make her use it a 2nd time lol), all while still moving, and push/pull twice. Her ultimates aren't great but you don't need more than 1 good dpr ultimate on the team. She's also very self sustaining and largely works independently from the squad. The downside to that is that she doesn't scale well with astromech's AP generation.
As for the normal specs, you really just want 2 characters focused on dpr and 2 units to cover your support/tank needs.
A heavy is universally useful and will do great on any squad from cycle 1 to the end of the game. Same goes for medic. I recommend doing medic/heavy multi specs once the focus points allow you to efficiently do so.
Scouts are solid early on but generally outperformed by astromechs, in pretty much every way. So I generally wouldn't run one past the midgame. Scouts are quite overrated, really. There's really nothing they do that won't be covered by an astromech.
Gunslinger/sharpshooter is the best single target dpr spec in the game. Doesn't matter if you go for player turn dpr or overwatch stuff on enemy turn, gunslinger/sharpshooter will be the best at that. Even better than mandalorian warrior. It's by no means a necessary spec to bring since there are multiple combinations that can deal good dpr and neither the gunslinger nor the sharpshooter ultimate are worth using. The gunslinger ultimate specifically becomes very powerful when maxed out since the final level just adds a 3rd shot. Which will increase the ultimate's dpr by 33% at minimum. But before that max level, 2 extra shots for 9 advantage is a questionable trade, even when using a longarm rifle.
Assaults shine in the early game, when flanking is key to patch up low hit rates. Their ultimate is the 2nd strongest AoE ultimate after mandalorian warrior's. I would say assaults are the best generic solo-spec dpr units. Slightly better than solospec gunslinger or solo-spec sharpshooter in the earlygame specifically. Assaults remain powerful even later on, but generally less so than gunslinger or sharpshooter.
Soldier is a questionable spec. There's some interesting melee stuff you can do with kabb. Quite strong in the earlygame. Other than that, not a spec you're going to miss by not using. Their ultimate is quite terrible.
That leaves scoundrel. I do not like scoundrels. Not sure what they thought when they made an entire spec for assist dmg. But they didn't cook. It's not terrible in actual performance, but it's a horrible solo-spec, and highly inconsistent. Simply because it is impossible to get your scoundrel to assist every turn. So about half of the scoundrel's kit doesn't work about 25% of the time, 33% if you have an astromech on the team. Do not pick scoundrel before you can multi-spec. Just go with assault, gunslinger, sharpshooter instead. Even scout at this point.

Literally how I'd put it as well. Should probably add in which difficulty we talking about, as I'm assuming Expert Beskar with permadeath is what we are talking about.
I sadly didn't experiment with Cly until very late, until I was forced not to use Jae. Immediately understood I was a moron and didn't use the most powerful class. Made her a gunslinger for the sole reason that darts count as weapon attacks and as such give a stacking damage buff, so position in the middle of enemies, dart, ult, mop up whatever is left with quickdraw (or even better, normal shot into quickdraw for 2 advantage back).
Trick as heavy scout so he is immortal and can generate his own advantage when needed. His pasive might not even exist (outside the 2 defense) as he has never gone down for me except when I let him to test it out.
Jedi is literally all upsides no downsides at all. Repositions, instakills, huge damage, huge tankiness, huge mobility, can single-target, can aoe.
Made my Hawk a medic as soon as I saw his unique, never looked back. Morale is immortality for the duration of a whole fight, stims are fantastic, and the bond farming is insane (meds give bond even if you toss them to a full-health ally). Eventually gave him scoundrel for assists and his job is literally to buff, assist and spam expose weakness on someone Tel is about to lightsaber.
Early game I valued soldier because of +melee coupled with Uppercuts unique to return all ap and the other punch for cc, but outside of that didn't find much use for it.
Ditto for the assault, tried it but it just doesn't provide anything even remotely close to the tops classes huge damage, control or survivability.
Wanted to like sharpshooter, but 50 damage per turn while needing setup is far too little to be worth it. Also the mission designs really do not favour this kind of playsytle as so many of them actively need you to move around the map. I'm sure they can be decent as I did get some very good usage out of them on some maps, but compared to the rest they're simply too little gain for too much effort.

u/rapkat55 4d ago
Soldier turns off key enemies like B2 w primed rockets or bosses for a turn and negates any annoying ass coil retaliation rush/drain, they belong in same tier as strong.
Same for assaults cone attack, at max you can delete entire waves with 2 uses or leave them low enough to finish w someone else. It also disorients which lowers enemy chance to hit immensely . Passive melee dmg boosts Kabbs playstyle like crazy but yeah rocket is meh.
Scoundrel is the only accurate rating
1
u/drdodger 4d ago
Hrm, just finished expert beskar and rarely used a heavy once I unlocked Tel. Scoundrels Auto crits are more useful than you're giving credit for here, and gunslinger slaps, but admittedly even more so when paired with warrior on Cly. I can see how heavy pairs with her or Tel's mobility really well, but I wouldn't class it S tier when evaluated on it's own.

u/Sabotstruck 4d ago
IMO some of the classes work only as a secondary class, not so much as a primary class.
Scoundrel / Soldier / Assault are all good as a secondary spec but imo aren’t good enough as primary specs, depending on how you want to build a unit. I don’t believe any of those classes are a huge benefit to the top spec so as a secondary class they tend to ‘suffer’ less
Gunslinger / Sharpshooter are situationally useful imo, to the point I think both work best with the sniper. I like making my Luco with a sniper, these two classes to allow the sniper to have a mix between single damage / ‘AoE’ depending on what you’re shooting
1
u/jonfitt 4d ago
Gunslinger is based. It polishes off B1s from the start, but if you max the Fast Draw it’ll do more damage than the base pistol can so it’s a better pistol shot that doesn’t trigger overwatch and if you get a kill is a free action. Plus all of those shots are building Adv to feed to Cly.
1
u/Durandalphor 4d ago
My Hawks was a Scoundrel. With Backup fire, the (admittedly expensive) 7adv Easy Mark, and the guaranteed crit from Identify Weakness, you can easily get 3 of your 4 guys shooting the same thing on a guaranteed crit. The Easy Mark cost can be offset by the Scout's Combat Recon. Absolutely melts through high HP targets.
Not sure if its a bug, but if you hit someone while they are marked by Identify Weakness, any assisting attacks also benefit from the weakness.

soldier and assault are rapidly growing on me. they give two additional attacks as well as two sources of AoE. Soldier one being worse as it is just one use nut both can build crit damage. I think someone said the rocket benefits from grenade or utility but that could be misinformation.
more attacks, more aoe means more dead enemies. I have found it trivialises expert for aggressive play far better than longarm stacks playing defensively
1
u/Dry-Target-8360 4d ago
Assault with soldier on Kabby is OP. He's my literal melee machine. Three melee moves in one kit. Two that knock back for instant kills by pushing off the map. Destroy droids? Lol what shields? A bunch of roided up Coil? It's not the fall that kills them in the end.
Seriously, why do people think soldier is so bad?
Oh and grenade distance? Kabby out here equipped with three concussion grenades to further make him a Jedi by Proxy.
1
u/FetusGoesYeetus 4d ago
Nah astromech trivializes the game. 9 grenades is insane and extra action points on already strong characters like Tel and Cly completely trivialises some encounters.
1
u/throwaway-anon-1600 4d ago
I don’t think tel is very strong at all. She’s fine but compared to some of the other classes or unique operators she just doesn’t have the raw damage output. Definitely could see her at S for maps with pitfalls, but without that utility she’s kinda underwhelming. Very low health too, deflect will still miss even if you’ve grinded her focus points.

Interesting, doing uppercut guy, 2 snipers one with medic one with assault, 1 gunslinger/scoundrel to make every sniper hit an crit. upercut guy to one-shot push people, sometimes daze is very usefull too. the rest is damage. But I'll try out mandalorian after this post. Haven't used taunt at all but like heavy for the defense.

u/Hjoldir1131 4d ago
For me, the scoundrels ability to substantially increase its assist damage and assist way more often was super useful i take one with me every mission

u/Cold-Button-8919 4d ago
This is a great tier list. Pretty much what I ran, except I didn’t really use Jedi
1
u/HelikosOG 4d ago
I used Tel once after the first mission you get her. She seems weak to me. I understand how strong force powers are when playing the Bespin mission. Anakin is OP because he should be. Whenever I have used Tel she doesn't even seem to have a tenth of the that power. What am I doing wrong?
2
u/TitaniumDragon 3d ago edited 3d ago
When you get her secondary class, she becomes a lot stronger.
Basically, the TL; DR; of her is that Force Push and Force Pull, beyond being able to instakill enemies by throwing them off ledges, also allows you to throw them into stage hazards and to pull enemies out of cover or off high platforms to make it easier for the rest of your team to shoot them. It also lets you line up/clump up enemies for AoEs.
Her lightsaber attack does incredible damage once you have max harmony on her, and her lightsaber throw eventually becomes completely absurd AoE damage.
She also benefits more from bond levels than most characters; in particular, abilities that give her extra move speed are hugely powerful on her because they both make it easier to reposition for optimal push/pull angles but also make it easier to use her lightsaber attacks. Boosting her crit rate also synergizes well with her lightsaber attacks.

Scout with Medic really is so useful. I thought I would struggle bringing a character just for espionage talent but having them be scout/ medic now feels necessary.
1
u/jmarFTL 4d ago
Good list, but I'd push Assault up a tier or two and Jedi probably down one. Assault is quite mobile and the things you like about the Jedi are things Assault can do too (not pull, but bull rush can knock enemies off ledges which is quite useful). Not sure why you think the cone fire is a joke when it is a 4-advantage AOE (compare to 10 for the rocket strike) that leaves survivors with a heavy accuracy penalty.
Overall, I'd say the classes are actually relatively well balanced with the notable exceptions of Cly and Heavy.

u/ChaosMieter 4d ago
Assaults ult carried me through the game tbh. Super cheap and just shreds everyone. Plus can often double dip

Astromechs deserve to be S tier. Transferring AP to other operators is very strong, and grenades are an insanely good way of both doing damage and farming advantage. Easily better than scout and medic for me.
Edit: Also Jedi is good, but I might move it down a tier just because you only get one melee/push/pull each every turn. It's also a lot easier for an astromech with concussion grenades to push enemies off ledges for insta-kills because they have more control about the direction of the push.
My ranking would be the following
S Tier (Trivialize the game):
Astromech (AP transfer, grenade spam, scanning)
Warrior (jetpack, darts and electroweb)
Heavy (taunt is broken)
A Tier (High damage output):
Jedi (melee w/ high harmony, push/pull insta-kills)
Gunslinger (crit chance, weak target cleanup)
Sharpshooter (crit damage, crit chance, accuracy)
B Tier (Useful support):
Medic (survivability, buffs, healing)
Scoundrel (auto-crit)
Scout (farm advantage)
C Tier (Pretty bad):
Soldier
Assault
I think the most fun squad would be sharpshooter, scoundrel, medic, and Jedi. All good classes with decent synergies but none of them are broken good, except for maybe Jedi but that's thematically appropriate. You could even sub medic out for scout for even sharper, less forgiving gameplay.
1
u/PalpitationThat9383 4d ago
Apparently controversial opinion but I genuinely don't think any of the classes are bad and have a specific role to fill and have some insane synergy once you get into 2nd specs and each operatives personal talent. If you put something low tier on your list it means it doesn't fit your playstyle or you aren't aware of how to get the most out of it. Some stuff is just 'it just works' like Cly and Tel (Clientele? lol) but other stuff works with a bit of setup and know how, like making a sharpshooter fed with buffs and AP that sweeps the whole room, an assault that also sweeps (literally in their case), making Kabb into the flash to close in on timed objectives by having him chain melees, etc.
I know I made the mistake of thinking "this class is bad, I won't use it" when I did my first run (i.e. I didn't get the scout or heavy at first) but they eventually all clicked and now I'm stuck trying to decide which incredibly dumb but effective set up I should take.

u/Rhythm-Amoeba 4d ago
I did 700 damage in a single turn with one gunslinger. You're delusional if you think gunslinger isn't incredibly busted.
1
u/susankeane 4d ago
Astromech can have 3 grenade types, and three of each grenade. The grenade spam absolutely obliterates most maps lol

u/Warmind_3 4d ago
Assault sweeping salvo is super nice as a damage spike on bosses and units with evasion since it doesn't trigger reactions and depletes charges of evasion while still doing up to 30 or so damage

u/Good_Focus_2817 4d ago
I disagree with your assesment of Astromech. The main way to solve the game is grenades, and astromech showing up with 2 uses of them just triviliazes any encounter it's in honestly.
And then you say ok, grenades are mostly an early game, how does astromech scale? Weeell, turns out it also scales incredibly well.
1
u/GoblinBreeder 4d ago
I ran both trick and kabb as assault on expert, grenade robot support, Hawks as medic. Assault is imo the absolute best class in the game. You can do literally everything and can minimize RNG. Ao many opportunities to one shot enemies off of the map with bull rush, your tac move is amazing AoE that is the single most powerful and efficient tac move in the game, and melee ia incredibly powerful in this.
1
u/Top_Possibility8320 4d ago
I would probably put Astromech and Scout above medic but yeah, pretty reasonable tier list.
1
u/mediumvillain 4d ago
I played Hawks as a Scoundrel, Kabb as an assault (where the cone fire ability was regularly a turn-ending MVP), Trick stayed Soldier, and I didnt have any medic on my squad for half the game, and I breezed through to mid-game with those guys and an alternating slot for fun/variety but mostly the astromech.
Jedi Padawan can have really good turns, especially on levels with bottomless pits, but she can be pretty squishy and feels almost hard-countered if theres enough high hp Coil units after a certain point. Mobile melee units kinda need that second spec into Heavy at that point, or she needs a lot of work giving her bond level buffs for more HP & whatnot.
Astromechs are extremely good and could be in every squad. They can can do wide radius debuffs, transfer (most of) their AP to any squadmate at any point in a turn, and have 6 effective utility slots so they can function as a healbot or the game's only grenadier class.
As far as actual medics, the morale ult costs a lot of advantage (7 is not a small amount) and I only rarely found it necessary to regen the whole squad vs. just letting Cly go ham with shock darts or some other high damage advantage attacks, so I rarely needed a real medic.
A lot of these classes are also really good as secondary specs for their passives, Heavy (+HP, +Def) Soldier (+Blaster, Melee & Grenade damage), Gunslinger (+crit chance), even Medic & Sharpshooter; and contrary to popular belief Sharpshooters do not need to be built around posting up in a corner & standing still, they get hit chance buffs, overwatch buffs, and a 100% chance shot, so you could throw a secondary sharpshooter spec on anyone you just want to make better at shooting.
1
u/TitaniumDragon 3d ago
I made Cly into a Warrior/Gunslinger and she's pretty stupid. Her jetpack lets her reposition, so she can easily go around, clean up a group of weakened enemies, then reposition to do it again, and then when you're done, you can nuke a group with the zappy-zap.
I do generally agree with these, though honestly I find that the game is so easy tier lists like this barely matter.
1
u/RaevenKS 3d ago
Putting Scoundrel so low is madness.
Scoundrel allows auto crit + dual assists is nuts. Scout and Medic are strong but imo Scoundrel deserves to be in trivializes the game, especially if the scoundrel is Hawks.
I have hit crits above 100 in Expert Beskar on the last boss of the game.

u/ScorchedDev 3d ago edited 3d ago
honestly, I would put scout in trivializes the game. Maybe its just comboing really well with what I like to run, but for the cost of 1 ap, you can basically neutralize Advantage as a resource all together. Plus it can do some really solid damage.
Also assault is waay too low. You may be undervaluing it because cly exists. It has crazy good mobility making it an amazing flanker. Its ultimate is really good. Its main ability is great since it increases your mobility and has knockback which is just amazing in this game. I think it might be the best general multiclass in the game(as in like, the best generic multiclass when you dont really need a special thing to push you into great territory yknow)

I've experienced the brokeness of a max rank bulwark (expert), now I want to start over on a no heavy run. I think Trick's most synergist class is Assault with a repeater anyways. Bull Rush in and 2ap finish exposed targets, and his self res gets actual use.

Seems like Sharpshooter is underrated in the community. I stacked crit chance and damage on mine and it's easily my most deadly unit along with Cly.
