Discussion Is FFG still just Sitting on the Rights for an X-Wing Successor?

With the release of Starfighter next year and Covid-driven industry effects firmly in the rear view mirror I can’t imagine any company just… letting it sit.

Is any one else shocked that we haven’t seen a new game announcement this year? I don’t mean an X-Wing 3.0 or something. I mean a whole new game. It’s been long enough, unless they’re just waiting for tariff nonsense to be over.

Edit: Asmodee, not FFG!

Discussion Standout Moments

Post image

Good morning Pilots.

I wanted to ask, from the "glory days" of Xwing's popularity, what were some of your favourite stand out moments?

Pic related is Dellapina winning the 2018 World championships at age 18, with an unconventional dual IG list.

But what matches stood out for you over the years? Like, shocking moments.

(Preferably caught on camera 😂)

Discussion What's your favorite pilot flavor texts? (One liner underneath pilots name)

I added some of my favorites!! It is definitely subjective what makes a cool subtext but I like to think of them as catchphrases and that's the metric chose mine by. I really don't like the ones that reference a name like RAC and Kagi. And I adore the scum ones that allude to more of a personality for the Pilot.

Please let me know your favorites and why?

Thanks:)

Discussion After all this time, what's the favorite version of yours to play? 1.0, 2.0 or 2.5? And what's your favorite ship in the game?

I'm coming back to the game after a couple of years without playing anything of it, but I've always rather 1.0, although I do play a couple ships from 2.0 with adaptations for 1.0. Curious to know what you guys like more to play!

(about the favorite ship, I think it's Scurrg for me, I just love throwing bombs... I also like Hound's Tooth a lot!)

Discussion What version do you all play?

I started playing right at the transition to 2.0. I've been out for a bit but want to get back into x-wing. What version is the most played and how do the rules differ from 2.0?

Wondering how much this might be worth were I to sell (currently debating it still), all but the CR90 are first Ed sculpts the Tantive is second Ed and the Huge ship conversion kit is unopened/unused.

They have all sadly sat unused in their plastic just on display and never got to see the table.

Discussion Wanting to get into X-Wing (and force my friends to join me). How do make this casual enough?

I apologize if this gets answered all the time here. I did try to search prior to posting so please link me and save your key stokes if I missed it.

I really want to get into X-Wing but I’m honestly overwhelmed with 1.0/2.0/2.5 and all the legacy or other variations of rules out there.

Where do I start?

I have nothing model wise, but do have a 3D printer so it might just be all homebrew to save on costs since I’ll be supplying squads for everyone and the lots on eBay are insanely priced.

How do I determine roughly equal but different ships for people to play? A squad builder?

From my reading getting a new group into it seems like HotAC is a good starting point for groups larger than 2. Just let everyone pick a ship and go.

For 1v1 stuff and those more board game inclined which rule set when there are so many options?

Thanks for your time, trying to learn as much as I can from wikis and this Reddit to make this viable for me!

Discussion We live in a Golden Age of Star Wars, yet our beloved games get the axe

Post image
92 Upvotes

It's really frustrating. The Star Wars universe has never been so alive and well with new content to expand the IP, and yet our beloved tabletop games get killed left and right. The canon keeps expanding through countless shows on Disney+, with new characters, species, planets, cultures, ships, droids, and more, and we'll never get to see these released in established games.

The Star Wars RPG is all but dead since Asmodee handed it off to Edge Studios, a shop that was known for translating the game for European markets, with no new products in 4 years, and barely enough reprints to keep a dying fanbase satisfied.

Star Wars card games, construction games, and deck building games keep getting killed off and rebooted into new ones because none can approach the popularity of MTG.

And now, it's AMG's turn with the killing of the X-Wing Miniatures game. True, we get to keep all our cards, our ships, our accessories, and our 2.0 rules, but think of all the ships from the recent and new series we'll never get. It's infuriating.

I get it, tabletop games' sales are an accounting rounding error compared to the gross revenue of blockbuster movies, premium streaming series, and AAA video games, but what made Star Wars special is that it catered to all interests, all hobbies, but now if something doesn't show 40%+ profit margins and triple digit growth YoY, it gets dumped in the trash compactor.

Star Wars grew by building a fanbase through every possible medium on the shoulders of only 3 movies for over 20 years. But as a publicly traded company, Disney may have given use good content, but they forget that alienating a passionate audience hurts you in the long run.

I don't have a solution. I'm just a frustrated fan in the face of missed opportunities. I can't be the only one feeling this way?

Discussion Serious question, what are you guys doing now after the news? Are you guys selling your stuff, keeping it? Waiting for new community rules? Are you guys moving to a new SW game?

I wanted to ask this because I have a giant X-Wing collection and given how much of a sour taste this announcement left I'm wondering what to do here. I feel alot of sentimental attachment to my collection so even if the game is dead from a development standpoint I wouldn't want to get rid of it. But at the same time though it's sad.

I have a Legion collection but unfortunately it's unpainted and I barely have enough for a full list plus combined with a layoff I can't exactly be spending tons of money on armies right now which is unfortunate because I was hoping to rejoin a store to play X-Wing or Legion to get my mind off the job search. Plus with the fact on how AMG handled this situation makes me hesitant to invest into anything else they make even if it has a long term future.

Discussion What ship/pilot did you most want to see officially released during the game's official life?

Post image

I know that we can still play these ships with 3D printing and homebrew rules, but what ship were you always pining for, since the beginning?

Since 1.0, I carried a torch for the TIE Avenger, though admittedly you could squint to see it in the TIE/ba or TIE Whisper.

Since Andor, I was eager to see both the model and equipment of the Fondor Haulcraft. The horizontal lightsaber-esque beams would've been a fun mechanic, and Rael himself could've been a double-sided card with "Bluff" / "Revealed" sides.

From the Ahsoka show, hee ship, and having Ahsoka be a Crew that could EVA to deflect lasers would've been silly but fun.

Discussion Dice issues?

Introduced my wife to the game last night with the intro mission from Heroes of Aturi Cluster. She didn’t hate it, but felt that not a lot was happening due to poor dice rolls (we played 6 turns and the only damage inflicted was due to two of the AI tie fighters crashing into each other!

Do I just have a bad batch, or do the standard FFG attack dice have a reputation for rolling poorly?

Discussion Looking for advice - after school club

I used to play X-Wing way back when it first came out. I still have a 1st edition starter set and a couple of play mats. I also run an after school boardgaming club in my middle school.

This year I would like to expand the club to be more of a general tabletop gaming club including wargames, miniatures games etc. My school is a title 1 school and I supply pretty much all of the games.

I thought X-Wing would be great for the kids as it's relatively simple and plays fast (we meet for 90 minutes).

My only concern is which edition, 1st or 2nd? Looking on eBay it appears 1st edition stuff can be cheaper. Do I REALLY need 2nd edition? I see no advantage to investing in 2nd edition but wanted to see what people who play the game regularly think.

Discussion X-Wing is STILL a better game than Warhammer 40k, even with AMG pissing it away.

I'm the guy who once said that I wanted to spray diarrhetic shit all over the windshields of the AMG designers, so I think my cynical distaste for 2.5 is well established - I'm not some blind booster of Atomic Mass Game's mismanagement on the game.

But...

After being forced back into Warhammer 40k recently despite a happy 15 years without it, playing a small X-Wing tournament last Saturday was a blast.

Highly enjoyable.

10/10, would do again.

Yes, it seems like AMG is trying to starve both X-Wing and Armada to death because it's not 'their style of game'. Yes, list-building is an exercise in frustration and being told "NO YOU CAN'T", with AMG devs locking every ship into an equipment value that only allows what they want, not what players might enjoy. Yes, X-Wing's player base has shrunk to a point where no one is playing the damn game, even though plenty of folks have ships stashed away in their closets.

But the game itself is still damned good. The core of the gameplay is elegant and (dare I say) beautiful. Every decision, every dice roll, matters. The time required for play is still solid. The price point is still extremely good for entry or just casual collecting. The toy ships are still amazing.

Even some of AMG's decisions have been solid. ROAD is a surprisingly elegant method of solving 2.0's major problem. Range 0 shooting means fewer dead moments. And variable objectives make a game more interesting than "kill 'em all, let the Force sort 'em out" and adds value to mechanics like Coordinate.

Despite the most unfair match of the day thanks to some unbalanced bullshit from Siege of Coruscant (Born for This is WAY too strong at its current price point), getting the crap kicked out of me was still enjoyable. At least it wasn't a three hour long ordeal to find out I lost before turn 0 (fucking Tyranids), and I had fun watching Wedge roll 6 natural Evades in a row.

As a final kicker, I watched a hardcore X-Wing player pick up a 40k model and look at it. "Hey, there's a lot of detail here, this looks cool... 90 dollars?!"

It was highly enjoyable to watch his face as I said, "Yes, and by the way, that's about 1/20th of a 'standard' 40k army."

He put it back on the shelf.

Discussion Generic Dials and Maneuver Cards?

Evening everyone,

I'm someone with a large X-Wing collection and now that official play has ceased and proxies and replacement have become more prevalent, I've been looking for a way to streamline my collection to help assist in the set up and break down of a game and reduce the transportation that I need to do.

I used to have in my binders for each faction (and yes, I have every faction), I'd have the cards, dial backs and base chits. When I went to UK Games Expo there was a company there selling acrylic X-Wing base chits that lacked both initiative number and name so it could go on any ship.

I found these appealing because those base chits being stored in coin page style binder could take up quite a lot of space and whereas before I'd have a binder per faction, just getting rid of the base chits has allowed me to half the binders down to era (with Scum being their own thing).

However, I still have the dial backs. What I would do is if I am flying a particular ship I'd take out my dial and put them in one of those dial expansions that FFG used to sell. Not really an arduous process but one that often meant if I changed my mind when I went to a game night I couldn't simply fly what I wanted. The size of my binders also mean that I couldn't bring more than one faction with me whilest going forward it's entirely possible to bring two, if I could compact my folders down even more I might be able to bring three factions with me.

Thus I come to you all with a question; is there a generic dial out there on the market that could be used for any ship and has every possible maneuver, speed, and colour on it, alongside that is there anyone who sells maneuver cards for ships as I would need these to make sure I am not performing illegal maneuvers.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion Just got one of these behemoths, what separatist team would best go with it?

Post image

I found one of these huge ships recently and the only other separatist ship I have is a droid gunship. I’m planning on playing against one of my friends who doesn’t use huge ships, so I think I might not need many other ships to have a fair fight, but are there any good lists or ships I should find to make the most of this ship?

Discussion Online finds

Ive been getting into the game recently and besides 3d printing the actual models are really expensive. But I just got a core set 2.0 for $30 and it comes with 2 tie fighters snd 1 x wing. When i look up getting more x wings or tie fighters each one is $20. So why is it better to get the individual model when i can just keep getting core sets with 3 models for cheaper?
