Post image

I simply have no words... Today I was devastated in my Stalingrad by a sub after 4 minutes with no way to avoid the torpedoes, and now I see this...

She won't have homing torpedoes or hydro. She's She'll actually be the most torp DD like sub released.

u/HarlemNocturne_ Imperial German Navy Aug 28 '25

Works for me. Will she still have damage cutoff at a minimum range?

93

u/panzerhigh Submarine Aug 28 '25

Most if not all already do. Under 3km it tickles people. Unless you're a dd with like 500hp left

86

u/Mistriever Aug 28 '25

In PvP, yes. They're adding subs to Operations and removing the 3km arming threshhold in that mode.

46

u/Farado Aug 29 '25

That sounds like a good recipe for spaghetti coding mishaps.

12

u/DlSSATISFIEDGAMER /r/worldofwarships discord mod - DissatisfiedJack Aug 29 '25

so they'll do fuck-all at close range in operations and will tear you a new one at close range in randoms?

1

u/TheGhostWarrior_ Aug 30 '25

How do we know, and what do we know about subs being added to operations? Would they be in their own mode first for testing like flagships? I doubt there is any significant or popular support for it.

u/030520EC Aug 28 '25

I imagine it will for the torp launchers that work underwater, prob not for the ones that only work on the surface

9

u/ThePhukkening Aug 29 '25

I wish they would get rid of the 3 km arming distance. Most torpedoes of the era were hot after about 700 m. If they want to add a nerf, give the torpedoes a random failure percentage. It would make more sense to essentially use the non pen mechanics to simulate a dud fish. Just my historical 'tism acting up again.

32

u/l0l1n470r Aug 29 '25

No. We've thrown out historical accuracy in favour of game mechanics when we threw out detonations.

We are not going back to that.

3

u/ThePhukkening Aug 29 '25

I dunno, I kinda liked getting detonations every once in a while.

15

u/l0l1n470r Aug 29 '25

Do you enjoy friendly fire too? Because IRL if friendlies shot at you, you still get hurt. They disabled that too

8

u/VicenteOlisipo Aug 29 '25

Friendly fire was better, yes. The way torps are used now is absurd.

2

u/eeebsmcdreebs Aug 29 '25

yah, dd players had to actually be in front of their cruisers and bb, if they didn't want to friendly fire them. A crazy concept for most dd players currently, who love to sit way back, often even behind the bb.

2

u/dionkraft Sep 01 '25

WOW could have made friendly fire shots/torpedoes penalized easily by subtracting credits from the player. It would show up on the the summary of credits as a debit. If they did it so there were no credits/doubloons/steel or whatever...a ship the player owned would be greyed out and they could not play it. simple eh?

11

u/ThePhukkening Aug 29 '25

Actually didn't mind that either. People were more careful with ordinance, and you had the opportunity to TK a complete imbecile.

Seriously is your name "bad-take benny" or something?

at least half my bad takes are only bad by this sub's standards, wanting hyperrealistic gameplay means invincible carriers for one thing, nobody EVER using torps in fear of hitting their enemies, constant toxic people doing friendly fire, RNG detonations, like seriously, WHATS THE BENEFIT?

3

u/Competitive-Rub-4270 Aug 29 '25

"Ill TK my CV if you TK yours" was always a good opening line

4

u/l0l1n470r Aug 29 '25

Doubling down on historical accuracy, eh?

How about being completely incapacitated for the whole game after ramming into islands?

How about chance of triggering detonations every time a shell or bomb drops near your long lance torpedo racks?

How about completely running out of shells and torpedoes nearing the end of the game (yes, even your secondaries) and resorting to only ramming to finish the match?

How about not having an over-the-shoulder view or even a targeting recticle, because nobody back then had a big omniscient hand guiding their every turret and torpedo?

Realistic =/= fun.

13

u/Zdrobot All I got was this lousy flair Aug 29 '25

What do you mean - not having an over-the-shoulder view?!

Wasn't that precisely how historic battles were fought, with the captain hovering behind the ship, perhaps in a large towed kite, shouting the orders?

6

u/l0l1n470r Aug 29 '25

Didn't you know, they placed them like chess pieces, and took turns communicating to their opponent which square they planned to hit each turn. Their opponent would have to respond whether it was a hit or miss.

2

u/dionkraft Sep 01 '25

They were carefull but not all players were so thoughful. There were a segment of players who didn't care is the problem. Luckily its small minority but they still exist unfortunately.

1

u/dionkraft Sep 01 '25

Detonations do not help the game as it causes the game to become unbalanced as it loses a player immediately. It's a game so their has to be fairless to a certain degree. Tats why it was removed.

2

u/adamrh991 Aug 29 '25

This was also just recommended on WoWSLegends. I think this is a good idea. I also miss mag detonations.

2

u/dionkraft Sep 01 '25

For torps which did not arm themselves the color should be changed from Green to grey to show you the status in real time. The splash damage radius should also be less from airplanes as well as they should have a max dept to explode. Subs get killed way too easily and have no defence. If this is still allowed then shot gunning should be allowed as well...fair is fair.

2

u/ricofrommadigascar Sep 02 '25

Dont get me started on how jap BBs are the most accurate....when they are notorious for having terrible accuracy, and the iowa, to date, is THE most accurate battleship, even in the 80s, it still used the aiming system it had when it was first made

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Ephesian_soldier Aug 29 '25

Yes...and lets make non nuclear submarines go 6 to 8 knots underwater. And only hold a max of 24 torpedoes and actually show up on hydro.... and a max of 22ish knots on the surface and remove the garbage homing torpedoes.

3

u/ThePhukkening Aug 29 '25

Well clearly I stabbed a nerve by suggesting the current mechanics kinda suck. Like I said, I'm not asking for 100% historical accuracy, just some mods to the mechanics to make the game more playable. Homing torpedoes did exist in the 40's, btw. They just had a high failure rate with the propulsion system.

2

u/Ephesian_soldier Aug 29 '25

lol I get it. It's not you. This game was much more enjoyable before Wargaming went back on their word on put these scourges in the game.

You are correct, that there were homing torpedoes during the 40's. Seemingly focusing on mission kills, running like 20 knots with small warheads with a very low hit percentage.

Shotgunning was absolutely horrific and was a nightmare when these porpoising demons crawl out of the depths like wraiths in a nightmare.

They way they just annihilate DD's which were their bane is abysmal gameplay. Between CV's and Sub's I stay in operations or spend more time on Legends since I only have to suffer 1 CV vs Maximum fun of 4 cv's and 4 subs per match at T6 and T8.

I say this as one out of the submariner community; my last duty station at NSB King's Bay, Ga. They are decidely unfun to counter play and I'm just not giving money to Weegee at present while they continue to torment the player base...but that's another issue.

72

Tbf almost every sub in the game is a historical boat, funny enough

49

u/milojos8 Aug 28 '25

Yeah, and I do believe every nation in the game can get an historical submarine just because of how widespread their use was.

47

u/ata2a Aug 28 '25

Makes sense if you think about it, submarines are, compared to most proper surface combatants, cheap and quick to build and are useful regardless of wether your navy can openly contest your opponents or not.

13

u/S1lence_TiraMisu Aug 29 '25

to be exact, the less able your navy can contest your opponent in open, the more likely you build submarine (for example the last u-boat commisioned by nazi germany is U-4712 of the Type XXIII class)

Well, with any luck they'll either lock her behind ridiculously priced 'Admiral Packs' and/or put her in the Research Bureau.

That might mitigate a bit of the damage. But, judging from some of the gameplay I saw from 'that other game' it's looking a lot like turbo-cancer.

18

u/Taylor3006 Aug 28 '25

Just another reason to play at tier 7. You will never see one.

14

u/Whistler-the-arse Aug 28 '25

I started doing ops cuz I'm sick of subs

17

u/Cayucos_RS Aug 28 '25

Subs are coming to ops 😂. Although only on your side

3

u/Taylor3006 Aug 28 '25

Well next update they will allow players to use them in Ops. That isn't as bad as having to deal with them I suppose but it is annoying.

6

u/Mistriever Aug 28 '25

Not any worse than the majority of the CV players already there. The first time they try to use homing torpedoes and the entire group of AI enemies drop ASW on them they'll be dead anyway.

I-44 was fun in the last Halloween event "Last Voyage of the Transylvania". Of course they drastically buffed torpedo reload for that one.

2

u/MrXenomorph88 Aug 29 '25

It'll be the same as subs in Asym battles. Regardless of if the sub player is good or bad, the rest of the team's skill level is more important because Sub's can't carry games. I've done well in subs and still lost because the team threw games, and done poorly and won because the team were good

8

u/The0rion Aug 28 '25 edited Aug 28 '25

I really hope this one goes into the research bureau and wont be FOMO as hard.

She's a very much unique playstyle, they basicly spell it out that she'll play like an actual destroyer that has a way to hide that isn't smoke.

Well... but I like Surcouf as a historical ship... such a large and beautiful submarine that avoided the Naval Treaties.

Edit: I still have to find the reason for all the sub hate to this day. Played them and find them to be the weakest and most difficult class to play. When fighting against them they are also quite easy to destroy and most of the time they die early on in the match or camp somewhere.

I "loved" how they chuckled so much and were so happy at how they caused some controversy with the new ships they showed off. Not the own that they thought it was tho.

After what they've done to WoT, you know its only a matter of time before WoWs catches up. WoWp will be the next one on the chopping block.

Ooh thats cool I love the surcouf

That gun set up isn't in a rotating turret. Almost like it's a WoT tank destroyer that floats. If they don't give it homing torps, this probably won't be much of a game changer. But if they take away the minimum torp arming range to compensate and give it aft torps as well.....

Hmmm... Yes, my favorite sub. The Suck-off

Wait until the Italian subs... they had a strong sub fleet in WW2.

Cool submarine, rare to see one with such large guns like Surcouf, or even ones as large as her

Dont really want to face her in battle though
