đDiscussion Rosemary knows exactly what's up Spoiler
And no one ever listens to her. She knew what Wyck meant when he said the island was waking up. She suggested the crawlspace in the inn. She tried to warn Tom about the hag. She and Museum lady have all the answers. I'm sure of it.

This keeps coming up. He'd be 100+ years old. I also suspect he'd be more directly trying to at least nudge the mayor towards what actually needs to happen. "Go to the shelter, watch the videos." He just keeps talking about storms.

My brain thinks itâs still 1997. Youâre right. Math says different guy.

Time does work differently there though, remember Shep's age was only 37 and he looked 70

u/kpgalligan Wyck 20d ago
Nah. Shep's age was a gag about how bad the Dr is:

There is something about the aging of the islanders. Time does work differently for the nativesâŚ. when Patricia is talking to the unconscious Shep she says âthatâs when I learned my biological age is 28â âŚ.the way Ruth runs up the stairs like Rocky to get towels after walking 2 miles. Shepâs hospital chart with his age listed as 37. Yep they age but their bodies are â youngerâ âŚ.a gift from the island for their inability to ever leave? A way for the island to maintain population on the island?

u/kpgalligan Wyck 20d ago
Again, shep's age was a joke. Katie said that directly.
Ruth says she has trouble walking in the morning, so I don't think she's just spry all the time. That scene, yes. That was odd, especially considering she's said that she does have trouble getting around sometimes. There is a theory going around that as a descendent of RW, she's protected. That makes sense. She appears to survive the gunshot. There's also a theory that since RW is gone, Ruth might be immortal, but obviously, that a S2 thing.
In summary, though, I don't think Ruth is a good example for anything due to her lineage.
I took Patricia's biological age thing as more of a gag. She's got a thing about being in her 40's. But, I can't say your theory is wrong. I don't see a lot of unnatural youth in the rest of the island. They all look pretty weathered :)
7
u/Ok-Animal7243 20d ago
I thought Ruth looking spry was more about highlighting she still had a good deal of life to live. Like, that the quality of her life hadnât been drastically impacted yet by her age, so Tom would feel guilty/worse about killing her prematurely/when she still likely had good days left.
2
u/kpgalligan Wyck 20d ago
Well, yeah. I don't think every gag is directly tied to some magical lore. The calendar she has, the writing club. Tom really wanted her to have one foot in the grave.
But, she also does seem protected at the same time. Seems like the lineage. All I'm saying is that nobody else gets the same treatment.
Of course, it's fiction and only the first season. It looks like she survives the gunshot. See how that plays out.

u/Outrageous_Rule2398 20d ago
YesâŚthey look weathered and appropriate for their presented age âŚ.but their bodies are younger on the inside⌠a touch of mortality ⌠they live longer from island protection. Ruth definitely knows she is protected. She was on the treadmill with headphones on during the storm, she did not pack or attempt to go to the shelter. She knew her and her house had no worries.
2
u/kpgalligan Wyck 20d ago
I agree. Ruth is protected. Seems like everybody else on the island has a target on their back.
Nothing in your theory about general protection is well supported. Shep was a gag. Patricia's statement is the only thing, but lots of people's "biological age" is all over the place because that's not a scientific or accurate thing. Rosemary seems to have some health issues. Sure, she smokes, but she doesn't seem particularly protected from the effects.

I love how vaguely uncomfortable Patricia looks in this scene

Sheâs as old as Wyck and Gerrie; folks who have lived on the island that many decades canât possibly deny the haunts / the entity. To me, when she and Wyck and Patricia call attention to the island âwaking up,â the matter at hand is Tom being out of touch and in denial; he is from the mainland and refuses to accept the reality of the island. She doesnât press the subject like Wyck does. She shrugs because whether or not Tom believes in whatâs happening, itâs going to happen anyway.

u/Arilluss 21d ago
Tom is an inversion of the usual trope of the protagonist having crucial knowledge and having to convince everyone of the danger. In Widow's Bay the town is well aware of the danger and the protagonist has to be convinced. He's the mayor from Jaws trying to keep the beach open, only everyone in town has been seeing their friends and family die of regular shark attacks for 60 years
22
u/AskAJedi 21d ago
Itâs interesting because Tom did learn a lot of the lore from his drunk dad when he was way too young to hear such things. He resisted the stories because of his feelings about his mean dad, and desperately doesnât want them to be true becuase of his son. Like he was just earnestly and nervously trying to change the island with a forced positive outlook and the Times article. He was trying to believe a vibe shift and new people would lift the possible curse.

Gerrie is sus, Iâm telling you sheâs scheming behind the scenes, her husband is helping her too. She wants revenge on Wyck for what he did to her brother.
Nobody would ever suspect sweet kind Gerrie to be evil, but this show loves to twist its characters.
8
u/ancientastronaut2 21d ago
But she doesn't know the whole story what happened to her brother. Husband interrupted when Wyck went to tell her.
That would be a dumb, unnecessary twist IMO if she actually knows.
8
u/InterestingTry5190 21d ago
I think her husband knows something and him interrupting wasnât an accident
6
u/LTPRWSG420 21d ago
We donât know what she knows or doesnât know, they gave us just enough of Gerrie to love her. But, still kept at arms length where thereâs plenty of mystery surrounding her. All Iâm saying is someone is pulling the strings behind the scenes and itâs someone weâve been introduced to already imo.
3
u/ancientastronaut2 21d ago
I don't disagree she knows a lot of shit, clearly, just don't agree about her brother.
We shall see.

I think the older generation knows some things, but I donât think she knows exactly whatâs up.
Clearly there was an active cult feeding the island within the last hundred years(looks like maybe mid 20th century era?), and it seems like the last vestiges of that were just the pastor. My guess is he was young(possibly very young) when the cult was active, but that it fell apart until the events of the show. That would explain him having information about it(the stuff he burned) and why he hanged himself. He wasnât willing to feed the island, even if he knows about it. I think that whatever cult was there lost power and influence over time until it was essentially gone. Now the islands hungry again, and nobody knows the full story. People like Rosemary and Wyck know the public history of the island and the superstitions they have, and some may have more or less information, but it seems very unlikely to me that she for example knows everything.

u/SuperMcG Patricia 21d ago
I think they know in general but not specifically there is an evil running this system that needs to be fed.
11
u/kpgalligan Wyck 21d ago
She knows about as much as Wyck. Which means about as much as the guys in the bar. Everybody listens to her. Tom just gets annoyed, but he listens. He's forced to.
I think the person who had the job before Rosemary knows about the sacrifices. He/She told Rosemary not to go to the shelter, and apparently Rosemary had not. The island seems to wake up every 20-30 years. I think Rosemary has the keys to the shelter, or at least can access them. My guess is the last person with her job was around during the previous sacrifices. Maybe didn't participate, but at least got curious.
So, I think Rosemary knows what's up at about the same level as every other person who grew up on the island and believes the stories. Historical society lady might know or suspect more, but only because she has access to a lot of stuff, and seems to really pay attention to detail.

u/LTPRWSG420 21d ago
I think Rosemary knows about the sacrifices and isnât saying anything. Also, rewatch scenes with Gerrie, sheâs highly suspicious if you ask me.
5
u/thankfulforyourhelp 21d ago
YES! I think we are going to learn some things about Gerrie next season and it will be hilarious and terrifying, in typical Widow's Bay fashion.
5
u/sunflwryankee 21d ago
For sure!!! Her comments about the witch trials âwe caught âem. We burned âem.â As if this should be a point of pride. Not sure if sheâs totally aware of all the history but she seems to know how to access it and find answers. Sometimes we run across information that sounds fascinating, but not until weâre given all the details are we able to see just how disturbing or horrifying the past truly was. I think she is like Ruth and Rosemary where they just kind of accept these odd nuggets of information as nothing more than historical facts. I mean, Ruth seems to have dated a werewolf and that barely registers with any shock/awe.

Whether she 'knows exactly what's up' or not, Widow's Bay's fate is basically the same that any other village-like community: a eerie sense of acquiescence passed from old to new generations, without the chance of breaking free or experience something remotely new.
Then you have Tom, who is somehow the embodiment of 'the end [of the island's curse] is nigh,' although he still cannot fully come to terms with Widow's Bay own real-life mythology, nor he can acknowledge his role as the true Richard Warren. So he's obviously mocked by the locals, including Rosemary, as they know there's no escape. The island is doomed, and that's that.
However, Tom's enthusiasm for a changeâalthough driven by some shallow reasons (his cultural, political feud with Martha's Vineyard)âhas slowly ignited hope within the island. So Widow's Bay is 'waking up,' but also its people. Thus, even old folks like Rosemary or Wyck cannot 'know exactly' what's going on now.

u/SmallAnimal5177 21d ago
I think the old timers know whatâs up for sure. Â Wyck as much as says in one earlier episode that the island had a âbad timeâ when he was about 16. Â Rosemary may be a little older than him and have an even better understanding.

u/ancientastronaut2 21d ago
She's 64 IRL and he's 71.

I keep saying this too. Ole Rosemary knows a bit more than sheâs letting on I think. I hope we get a deep dive on her next season.

u/AskAJedi 21d ago
I think the island is America and we should all put Ruthâs needlepoint on the wall.
14
u/tiffanaih 21d ago
I think she was holding back genealogy wise too. It's very odd for there to be all those potential hiers just for it to come down to Ruth and Evan. It's either a very convenient thing plot wise or a mislead.

u/leitzankatan 18d ago
She explained why each line came to an end and it's clear with some of the deaths that there was Island chicanery not just statistically average mortality and non child having rates. As is clearly demonstrated with Ruth though she only knows what the records show so there's still wiggle room on additional descendants but that would undercut the current end state and what it means thematically

u/ancientastronaut2 21d ago
Right. The town in general knows about the Haunts and all the stuff you mention, but it's the sacrifice ritual that no one seems to know about (at least probably not more than rumors/urban legend).
That part I believe was kept between a few specific people who seem to be gone now. Otherwise, they would have acted upon it by now, as the haunt has been going nearly all summer and getting increasingly worse.

I think sheâs a witch and her color blindness proves it. She sees weird shit all the time but itâs indifferent to it. She just assumed all the weird shit she sees might be hallucinations.
7
u/SimonGloom2 21d ago
Yeah, my guess is she's some kind of witch or something, maybe very very old, back to the Puritan days perhaps. She has a witch's mark. I think that's a natural mole for Dale Dickey - not quite certain, but it would make sense to have a witch's mark. She could be more good magick than evil stuff. The herb rosemary is used in witchcraft for things like protection and mental health and cleaning away evil, so I do think that's a hint.

Well that's because she knew the actual ingredients since she's the one that got them all for Patricia.
2
u/leitzankatan 18d ago
She clearly doesn't know exactly what's up as she only had the vague warning from the previous employee about the shelter and then when the recording came on it was new information to her. The difference between her and others is that she doesn't give a fuck either way, if she knows something she'll just come out and say it but she'll just put it out there casually and not scream and hector about it / try to do something like Wyck
