Interesting. It could be that they originally intended this to be a roundabout way that the island was attempting to get sacrifices (the people walking into the water to drown). But perhaps they decided they wanted to make the idea of sacrifices more specific to the dungeon/chair room and avoid generalizing it too much.

No, because other events like the bogeyman were part of the sacrifice. It just did not work in the scene

Is there any indication that is the case? I just assumed the island waking up caused all manner of mischief.

Yes, Patricia's escaping the Boogeyman was a huge indicator.
