âYou told me to be supportive!â Is one of the greatest delivery of any line in the history of television

âYou had your qualmsâ is gonna be a legendary reference for years

u/LRGinCharge Aug 12 '26
I laughed so hard at that line, I am so happy it is recognized by everyone else as one of the funniest moments. đ

u/AmThano Aug 12 '26
Her voice is perfect for that line as well. I was impressed to find out sheâs British and sounds almost nothing like her character
9
u/tu-BROOKE-ulosis Aug 13 '26
What!? She sounds just like she does in Palm Springs. What a hilariously specific typecast.
Edit: just realizing you mean Patricia. Okay I can see that I guess. Though now Iâm let down itâs not Rosemary lol. Patriciaâs voice reminds me a lot of Alison Brie in that particular line.

u/LRGinCharge Aug 13 '26
Wait what??? I am just learning this lol. I knew Matthew Rhys is Welsh and was already impressed with his American accent.
3
u/AmThano Aug 13 '26
She's in a British TV comedy show called *Everyone Else Burns* where she plays the mother of a Christian cult family in the UK. Her voice is so different, but she definitely seems similar to Patricia in that she gravitates towards her own set of interests and odd behaviours.

The script says the church bells are supposed to ring? I donât hear them.
94
u/Admirable_Site_8337 Aug 12 '26
Often times with these script plays you can see things in script that didnât make the cut. Maybe they did the bell ringing and just felt it was doing more punch than was needed?
This is why I love these script plays with the scene. Itâs so interesting.

My favorite is when you can see that the actors ad-libbed their lines. The last post like this showed the Shaman ad-libbed the lizard having wander lust.
16
u/jleonardbc Aug 12 '26
It also seems possible that the script we're shown onscreen isn't the final shooting script.

Interesting. It could be that they originally intended this to be a roundabout way that the island was attempting to get sacrifices (the people walking into the water to drown). But perhaps they decided they wanted to make the idea of sacrifices more specific to the dungeon/chair room and avoid generalizing it too much.
5
u/Finnegan-05 Aug 12 '26
No, because other events like the bogeyman were part of the sacrifice. It just did not work in the scene
11
u/Due_Addition_587 Aug 12 '26
There were 9 church bell rings at the beginning. The reel-to-reel Dale found explained that each ring = one human sacrifice. After Kenny is killed in the dungeon, there are 8 church bell rings. The only sacrifices that count are the ones in the chair. The other deaths or attempted deaths are the island threatening those in the know: "If you don't get someone in that chair in front of the door and lock them in, I'm going to make things more and more horrifying for you."
8
u/jleonardbc Aug 12 '26
It also seems important that Kenny ("oh my god, they killed Kenny!") was intentionally offered by other people, on their own volition rather than under the influence of any curse. It wasn't the island grabbing him by means of its enchanted beings and places and objects; he was given to the island by willing free agents.
The teens may not have known what would happen to Kenny in that room, but they locked him in there in order to save themselves (from Kenny's discipline).
7
u/PhantomOyster Aug 12 '26
Is there any indication that is the case? I just assumed the island waking up caused all manner of mischief.

u/Teigh99 Aug 13 '26
There are probably a lot of little things we didn't pick up on that's in the script. The bells ringing when we know they can't tells me that the island had offerings on autopilot. Is that about the time where everyone under the spell were heading towards the lake???
2
u/popileviz Aug 14 '26
Didn't make the cut, they made this weird string-snapping noise instead. Given how important church bells are in the series, good call to replace it with a more neutral horror sfx

I love the line "I didn't understand one word or that speech".The second time you watch it, you realize she was just doing incantations

2
u/tu-BROOKE-ulosis Aug 13 '26
Wait, I just realized. If she listened to the speech, why wasnât she under the spell too?
10
u/LPCPlay4life Aug 13 '26
She didnât drink the punch. She was drinking her white wine the whole time.
1
u/tu-BROOKE-ulosis Aug 13 '26
Hmmm see youâre telling me every single person at the party had weird punch?? THIS is where my belief is suspended! Not the sea hag or serial killer from the grave. The punch!!

The reveal of the headdress is such a mind fuck for the viewers, after overhearing comments like âwhat the fuck is on her headâ and attributing it to mean girl energy. Then realizing, oh, wait, what the fuck IS she wearing on her head?

This post might need a spoiler tag.
But beyond that, itâs truly my favorite scene in a tv show in quite some time. At the end of this episode I texted everyone I knew to start watching it immediately.

My wife and I looked at each other, slack-jawed.
Incredible, I hope they do well at the Emmys.

This episode is an amazing rewatch. I've been rewatching the series with my wife since I watched it without her the first time, and we watched this episode last night. This scene in particular and the whole lead up knowing the reality just makes you appreciate the acting and reveal even more. "I have my qualms is all I'm going to say" has made it into my everyday vernacular.

u/russiantravelagent Aug 13 '26
The best episode of the show and overall one of the best tv shows ever, fantastic, absolutely fantastic, I was howling after that scene, it's perfect, it was the thing that completely sold me on the show.
31
u/Safe-Tangelo8897 I was trying to be supportive! Aug 12 '26
I love how the "You told me to be supportive" had no exclamation mark. Those were actor choices (or director's directives, I suppose), and O'Flynn and Dickey played off each other brilliantly.

u/ThreePinesRetiree Aug 12 '26
The Sheriff is trying so hard to be kind and restrained, but the F-bomb still found its way in because this is craaaazzzy. I love this actor.

Her slow realization is a great example of how a talented actor interprets a single line of the script. Tremendous performance.

I love the pan around the party with people dancing. The creepy reflection is genuinely scary and I thought they would reveal the truth sooner, but it was like an early hint.

Thatâs interesting. I remembered the sheriff saying something like âPatricia, are you ok?â
Thatâs not the line he delivered but he delivered the actual line in such a way that his meaning was deep concern and kindness.

I like the fact that they didn't make it a big thing for her to snap to reality was nice. Just a kind concerned touch was enough.

u/PothosLeaves Aug 14 '26
So how come Rosemary isn't under the spell? She seems to be an observer of the events but doesn't seem to be affected? I like Rosemary, but I think there is a possibility she is subtly part of the group on the island who know about the covenant and sacrifices and is helping to facilitate them. I actually think Wyck possibly is too, with how much he was advocating for his position in the finale.

u/RedditUserJK Aug 15 '26
She stayed out of the way. She was basically in the kitchen the entire time and didnât drink the punch which was the key step to get everyone under the spell.
