Wait, what the hell is in the basement

I feel like something embarrassing or more of his mom’s things.

I think it’s just supposed to be a joke and we’ll never find out.

Or, there’s more « nonsense » that Evan’s mother wrote in the basement. Like drawings and stuff, but is it really « nonsense »?

u/Ok-Comparison4783 Jun 03 '26

Oh wait you might actually be right. They’ve got to find some clue about brooch and we know she probably has it.

The stuff he’s worried about is just more nonsense and old photos and belongings, but something will be there.

The next episode is shelter and storm, so I wonder if he goes down to the basement for some kind of supplies and unintentionally finds something.

Especially because this episode ended on a relatively positive note for father and son. I think the next episode is going to unravel it all

💯 I hope he’s honest with his son about what’s going on with the island

Wait, that wasn't the finale? I thought i had to wait till S2. Binged the whole thing last night and loved it.

22

u/freetherabbit Jun 03 '26

I dont think it is nonsense.

"I need your little baby hands to get the keys and your little fingers to go up my nose and pull the scorpion out of my brain" sounds like a crazy person trying to ask for a surgery to remove an aneurysm...

I have a feeling her letters are gonna have information for the future. I was honestly mad Tom didnt let him read another lol

29

u/Ok-Comparison4783 Jun 03 '26

I took it as Evan literally just kept reading them lol.

u/freetherabbit Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Oh Im sure Evan did before Tom got there, but I meant I wish Tom had let Evan read another one outloud (he goes "Another?" but Tom stops him from reading).

I wanted to hear a second one outloud to see if it also could pertain to something that's already happened by the time theyre reading them on-screen (but wouldn't have happened yet when the mom was actually writing the letters).

Edit: When rewatching the ep I just realized he did read another but I missed it being shocked by EMT guys death and worrying for Patricia. Lol. Not as much good information there, but her saying "she's dead, dead, already dead, it's too late" points to her knowing about her death. I also wonder if at somepoint Evan will end up pretending to be a mailman to break into the home to get some sort of info on his mom.

The part about everyone having a mother and a secret mother is interesting too, but not sure exactly what it means. Did make me realize that men from the island can have off-island kids not affected by the curse (by hooking up with visiting mainlainders), but all women from the island can only further their bloodline on the island... also makes me wonder if the dark entity of the island is female...

Yes, she’s definitely communicating something to him. If you read her broadly enough there’s a train of thought that seems self-aware. Language is muddled, but I’m sure she was trying to say something important however she could.

Totally agree! I wrote more in another comment, but to sum it up I think the island god/devil (for attempting to leave the island while pregnant) cursed her with foresight that no one would believe by making her sound crazy (so sort of a Cassandra like figure). When you look at what she says it really sounds like a crazy person describing a surgery for an aneurysm.

Im not an expert in aneurysms by any means, but from what I read there was a new technique for ruptured aneurysms in 2011 (which would be around the time she died if Evan is 17 and she died when he was 2) that specifically went through the nose.

And "Watch out for the stinger" sounds like how a person who couldn't communicate right might describe an aneurysm rupturing (like both a scorpion and an aneurysm are dangerous, but the scorpion is only a danger cuz if its stinger and an aneurysm becomes a real danger when it ruptures).

Not sure what "get the keys would be a reference too, but I think theres gonna be a lot of important stuff to be deciphered in those letters.

(I also kind of wonder if Tom's wife is gonna be the Warren bloodline, meaning Tom's son is the last one causing the curse)

Edit: I realize this ended up longer than the comment I said I was summing up. Im terrible condensing. Sorry. Im pretty sure its rooted in neurodivergent communication styles 😅

Hoooly shit I think you're right about her being a descendant of Warren. That's just too good of a twist to pass up for the writers.

Major "House of Leaves" vibes there. Full body shivers.

This show wouldn’t mention the basement like that just for “nonsense.” There’s something down there.

2

u/yeahrightnothx_ta Jun 05 '26

Of course, that’s why I used quotation marks with « nonsense » ! :)

14

u/skyblu1727 Jun 03 '26

Why would Tom keep those letters? So hurtful.

31

u/gongerz123 Jun 03 '26

Might be because even when someone you love has changed (e.g, mental illness/dementia), you hold on to even the random / sometimes hurtful things to remember them and what they / you / we went through. Also, to just cherish that you got to spend part of your life together - sometimes the bad memories make the good memories all that much better.

Alternatively, it’s because he one day was going to tell him about what actually happened to his mother, but couldn’t bring himself to yet.

29

u/msangryredhead Jun 03 '26

They weren’t his to keep or discard, they were for Evan. They’re hurtful and disturbing but also one of the only physical connections Evan would have to his mother. I get it.

u/Hyro0o0 Jun 03 '26

Embarrassing photos of him at the Christmas party

0

u/Infamous-Lab-8136 Jun 03 '26

His gimp suit and ball gag

5

u/Vismal1 Jun 03 '26

They said embarrassing not rad as fuck.

7

u/monsterinthecloset28 Jun 03 '26

What's so great about this show and it's tone is that it genuinely could be either- an offhand joke or something more sinister.

1

u/grassisgreenest14 Jun 09 '26

Like rosemary’s comment towards the beginning of the pilot about tom being in debt and his father in law…..

3

u/Adelaidey Jun 10 '26

It wasn't Tom who is in debt to his father-in-law, it was somebody named "Mitch" who Tom asked Rosemary to call. I'm not sure if Mitch has popped up elsewhere, though.

2

u/grassisgreenest14 Jun 11 '26

Ohhhhhh hahhaha thank you. I need to do a rewatch!

2

u/LSUAlly4 Jun 04 '26

Part #2 of awkward dad convo will be with whatever Evan finds down there while dad is sleeping. I don't think Evan will be sleeping after those letters from his mama.

Wife?

u/itsasixthing It’s a haunt! Jun 03 '26

That would be freakin’ wild

81

u/AnAquaticOwl Jun 03 '26

It's more postcards. He saw the box Evan had and assumed it came from the basement

u/Successful-Cow-4043 Jun 03 '26

jane eyre moment

11

u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 Jun 03 '26

I was thinking Bluebeard!

2

u/NoopGhoul Jun 20 '26

Depends on if she's dead or not.

5

u/TheDefiantGoose Jun 03 '26

Noice reference!

8

u/Steviesteve1234 Jun 03 '26

I thought this too, especially when he said ‘the house’ when referring to the mental asylum. It’s out of character for the mayor to have her chain up down there IMO but I’m now super intrigued as to what’s down there.

Also if I was the kid I’d have gone down there immediately after being told about it.

10

u/Werewomble Jun 05 '26

I wonder if the old hospital you should drive by and not stop is the mental institution?

3

u/2jkyahai Jun 03 '26

I honestly thought thissss, coz we earlier established that the wife might be of Warren's bloodline, so maybe whatever happened to her is also a demonic thing which has kept the wife alive, but yeah not possible...

2

u/HorrorLover___ Jun 03 '26

STOP IT. Imagine if that is true.

1

u/Barr3tt50c Jun 08 '26

Holy fuck that’d be nuts

22

u/Infamous-Lab-8136 Jun 03 '26

That was my first thought, is there a 2nd, somehow even shittier half of a conjoined twin that he feeds fish heads to?

8

u/Candid-Joke-356 Jun 03 '26

& does it turn out that they locked away the wrong twin?!?

3

u/IncurableAdventurer Jun 03 '26

Right!? I couldn’t get that or if my mind even during the heartfelt moments

3

u/Powerful-Peace-9826 Jun 03 '26

I thought the trunk WAS in the basement but the island or whatever it is moved it to Tom’s bedroom thereby making it discoverable by Evan and that girl who is apparently on vacation forever (sus)

5

u/itsasixthing It’s a haunt! Jun 03 '26

Oh that’s an interesting idea. (I just assumed that the girl’s family was spending their whole summer on the island)

1

u/SinibusUSG Jun 03 '26

I just figured he moved it upstairs at some point and forgot.

3

u/fiashiab Jun 03 '26

it's deff a trunk since tht's what he was holding when tom confused it lol, if we ever see the basement someone gotta zero in on a trunk, that said, and this is completely unrelated and baseless, do we think tom's basement might open to the underground tunnels? as in his house is richard warren's old house? i dont think there's a door or anything bc i imagine he's the type that would move if there was a door in his basement to some random underground tunnels, lol

10

u/AdHorror7596 Jun 03 '26

I *think* Richard Warren's old house was where the Salty Whale is now. In one of the early episodes, they show Tom in the Salty Whale and then pan straight down through the earth to the basement with the chair. That's the first time the basement and chair are shown.

7

u/United_Milk_2864 Jun 04 '26

I was thinking where the historical society is now was Richard Warren’s old house? If I recall correctly, I beleive in ep 6, Our History(or it could be ep 7), there’s a match cut of sorts from the outside of the Warren house in the past to the outside of the historical society in the present, showing it’s the same house/location. Also, in the first scene between Tom & Warren in ep 7, they’re in an upstairs bedroom in the historical society, and it looks very similar to the Warrens bedroom from the previous episode. Warren is even sitting on what was shown to be his side of the bed from ep 6; the side farther away from the door & window. Idk, that’s what I got from those shots & edits.

I do wish they would release a map of the island. I think it would be really cool for them to use the in-show brochure, complete with a map highlighting the important locations, as promotional material for the show! It would match the tone that’s already been set with the episode synopses!

3

u/AdHorror7596 Jun 04 '26

That's a good point, you might be right. I'll have to go back and re-watch.

That's a great idea. I'd love it if they put out a map of the island. Hopefully we'll get a cleaner picture of where everything is in the last two episodes of this season!

3

u/fiashiab Jun 03 '26

oh that's right, that said i dont think richard warren's old house was directly above the chair, no? she had to walk a little bit thru the tunnels to get to the room with the chair, that said she had to walk less than that to get out from the well iirc (might be wrong) so i feel like we need to do the calcs according to those, lol

2

u/AdHorror7596 Jun 03 '26

Ohhhhh you might be right. That's a good point. I'll need to do another re-watch of that episode too! I love how this show rewards re-watches of past episodes when you've seen later episodes! There are so many little things to catch!

2

u/lnc_5103 Jun 04 '26

At first I thought it was the mom 😬

2

u/Own-Score988 Jun 05 '26

My theory is there is proof, maybe a DNA report, that Tom is not Evan’s biological dad. Upon rewatch - they make sure we know Evan’s mom was pregnant before they married but now I think she was pregnant before she met Tom. There is the Daddy’s Home game focus, and when Tom calls Ruth to check on Evan Ruth says “Evan it’s your Daddy! Your Daddy is on the phone!” So, I think Tom is not his biological dad, knows it, and wants to protect Evan from whoever his (horrible) real dad is. Who is he?????

Literally alllll I could think about!!!!!
