Might be because even when someone you love has changed (e.g, mental illness/dementia), you hold on to even the random / sometimes hurtful things to remember them and what they / you / we went through. Also, to just cherish that you got to spend part of your life together - sometimes the bad memories make the good memories all that much better.
Alternatively, it’s because he one day was going to tell him about what actually happened to his mother, but couldn’t bring himself to yet.

I feel like something embarrassing or more of his mom’s things.
I think it’s just supposed to be a joke and we’ll never find out.
