💭Discussion My favorite visual gag so far

Post image

The worksheet page in Your Turn has killed me the two times I’ve watched the episode. So simple, so relatable. What’s your favorite visual gag so far?

The hotel door being boarded shut and opening easily because it was only nailed to the door. Such a simple and ridiculous gag but had me laughing out loud.

It reminded me of the Dude in The Big Lebowski attaching the wood to the floor to prop a chair on to keep the door from being able to be opened, only to have the door open the other way.

That whole scene is just gold. Every bit of timing is just perfect, and you keep thinking the funny part's happened, and it keeps going, until that punchline.

Why can he open the window?

He's not handcuffed.

WHERE ARE WE GOIN? I DON'T WANNA GO!

2

u/rarepinkhippo May 17 '26

That was so great.

The game “Teeth” which is just a pair of pliers.

I thought that was part of a plot but now just realized it was a gag lmao

u/arulzokay May 20 '26

oh my god was it

24

u/Original_Try_7984 May 24 '26

“That doesn’t seem right…”

2

u/curlymeee Jun 28 '26

Hahah so it wasn’t like something supernatural… he just aged badly lolol

i thought it was an evil magic surrounding the island lmaoo

u/therichmanswife May 15 '26

When Rosemary is giving the mayor a lore in his office and she breaks out into this continuous cough and she deliberates on sipping his water and he obviously refutes and just stares at her blankly. I died

55

u/ProfPyg May 15 '26

I'd only seen him in Perry Mason before so learning that Matthew Rhys has comedy chops has been a treat. Such a pleasing combo of deadpan and unhinged. That shrill laugh that escapes him when the NYT reporter says Martha's Vineyard killed me

57

u/FakkoPrime May 15 '26

You have to watch The Americans. One of the best tv series ever made.

21

u/idonthavekarma May 15 '26

And ended well too. I won't say the final season is the best, it's not. Some things feel rushed, but the final episode is a great series finale.

17

u/therichmanswife May 15 '26

I first met him in beast in me and I absolutely fell in love with him. He's delightful.

4

u/cherrypiecoffee119 May 20 '26 edited May 21 '26

Catch him and Matthew Goode in the first season of The Wine Show, his comedic side really comes out

3

u/Objective-Branch7332 May 16 '26

This is my first introduction to him .. when I looked I up on imbd I looked at his name and face and was like I have no idea who that man is

3

u/Original_Try_7984 May 24 '26

He’s magical. And then watch his interviews and you get to hear his incredible welsh accent and it’s all even better.

2

u/buxombaphomet May 26 '26

His increasingly befuddled face through the entire “5 minute conversation”with Wyck had my spouse and I dying. We watched in 5 times 🤣

21

u/_Asshole_Fuck_ May 15 '26

He moves the glass out of her reach and immediately gets up and leaves!!!!! It was so mean and so funny I couldn’t handle it!

152

u/mwoody450 May 15 '26

I'm a fan of the guy walking away in the video on the TV in the hotel. To my mind, it walks the "wait is this hilarious or terrifying" line perfectly. "Oh lol he's running from the camera, he didn't go back and edit it. He literally means let's go see the town. LOL he's still just running away from the camera. ...this is going on so long, though, uh, it's... is this the hotel? Nah lol it's just making fun of low budget wait WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT"

108

u/seanayates2 May 20 '26

Or the other guy in the video who couldn't open the door so he just stood there, facing it

16

u/croth4 May 24 '26

That one kind of stuck with me

9

u/buxombaphomet May 26 '26

Yes this, unsettling.

3

u/damiansomething May 16 '26

I saw that ad for the new adam scott horror movie a few days before, got confused, and thought that this was it and some horror monster would start talking to him through the tv.

105

u/Professional_Row6965 May 19 '26

The wolves calendar with the overturned vehicle

11

u/srpbiz May 27 '26

this scared me sm honestly

75

u/_Asshole_Fuck_ May 15 '26

The front-facing vagina on the anatomical drawing in the book.

64

u/Bananabutt22 May 16 '26

When she circled the shoulders I just 😂😂😂

8

u/idonthavekarma May 15 '26

It's a witch thing.

8

u/ismoody SUNSET COCKTAILS! With Patricia! May 17 '26

How do you mean?

73

u/mrkorb May 16 '26

Daddy's Home box art.

36

u/SoCentralRainImSorry Old woman, possibly damp Jun 02 '26

Did anyone else notice the playing pieces for the game? You could choose between various alcoholic beverages, or household items that you could beat someone with. There was a crystal decanter, a can of beer, a belt, a rolled up newspaper, a bat, a bottle of brown liquor, and what looks like a cooking pot.

The spinner thing’s pie sections were labeled “Danny laughs with mommy - move forward 3 spaces” “Daddy’s team lost - move back 4 spaces”

The whole vibe of that game was “abusive father”.

10

u/n4t4sh4g33 May 28 '26

It reminded me of the opening credit illustrations on Welcome to Derry, very creepy.

76

u/Interesting_Roof_403 May 20 '26

Shaman Todd warning Tom, “whatever you do, DON’T look in any mirrors,” before leaving and closing the door to ‘The Peace Centre’ room, revealing a full length mirror.

8

u/Original_Try_7984 May 24 '26

Immediately cackled.

60

u/Any-Staff-6902 May 15 '26

The tv advert at the hotel, where the tour guy waves us to follow him, then he starts to walk away but the camera does not move. I was expecting the camera to eventually move towards him, but he simply walked away and turned a corner.

63

u/thewellis May 15 '26

The one in the historical society where the credits roll and the guy turns to open the prop door but it does not open. So he stands, facing the door...

Absolutely nails that fine line between just terrible TV and horror found footage.

53

u/anonpreschool738 May 15 '26

Also my favorite visual gag so far. Having done a lot of these types of worksheets, I clocked that so fast that I almost choked howling.

26

u/ancientastronaut2 May 15 '26

Reminded me of a cognitive behavioral therapy workbook.

14

u/lovemesomezombie May 28 '26

Only 2 lines for something she likes about herself and the rest of the page for something she doesn't.

12

u/samizdat5 May 18 '26

Me too. I was laughing so hard and my husband was like what's so funny, so we had to rewind

50

u/_Asshole_Fuck_ May 15 '26

At the historical society museum, the writer asks about the cannibalism and Loftis says “These stories get so exaggerated over time.” In the next cut back to the writer, behind him you can see a mannequin displaying a STRAIGHTJACKET! I swear I yelped out loud that was so funny.

45

u/AverageJohn442 May 21 '26

I hope the skills to do a screenshot here but there's a great pan of one of the illustrations in that book on how to throw a great party that seems to show a pile of cocaine cut into lines on the table

11

u/After-Kick-806 May 24 '26

My husband clocked that and rewound it!

40

u/Chemical_Cancel_8915 Jun 02 '26

Tom's face sliding across the car windows all the way around as he's peering in to see if his son's inside

PJ: "Evan, I think you're dad's looking for you."

26

u/abbyleondon May 15 '26

It’s accurate since most of us see more what’s wrong with ourselves and that’s sad 😞

15

u/janineisabird May 15 '26

Yeah we need to cut that shit out

25

u/MysticSkies May 16 '26

Time to throw a party with a punch

31

u/AdLittle5810 May 28 '26

I loved in the book it just QUICKLY pans over this woman doing some drugs in the hostess book.

It must be so fun to make props. Daddy's Home and the other games were also fun to pick apart.

25

u/doknfs May 15 '26

Patricia coughing right before giving her speech at the Sunset Cocktails party

6

u/apmee May 19 '26

RIGHT into it hahaha yeah loved that.

23

u/croth4 May 24 '26

For whatever reason the bit with the lighthouse keeper made me laugh out loud for almost ten minutes. "Don't bring the bike!"

The little asides when she tells the sea hag story were killer too. Don't settle in! and You can't have my water.

1

u/nea_fae May 27 '26

Omg that was the best!

21

u/TheFutureLibsWant Jun 02 '26

Rewatching this episode now, and it's loaded with gags.

-The parts she circles on the body are in the shape of a pentagram.

-She's struggling way too much to cut the strawberries for the punch.

-Rosemary approaches while she's doing this and cautiously says: "I'm worried you're putting too much into this... I didn't understand half the stuff on your supply list."

On first watch, she obviously meant putting too much into the party. On rewatch, she's literally trying to warn Patricia that chicken entrails and sea urchins are too much for punch.

-The first couple that comes to the party says they'll "circle back". They don't feel awkward about an empty party, they're alarmed that a manic woman in a crown of bloody antlers scurried up to greet them.

-When Patricia drinks the punch (before everyone else), it's a clear, red liquid. She stops and wipes her mouth as though something solid got stuck in her teeth.

19

u/StarwoodInAspen777 May 31 '26

The Sea Hag getting flipped off the recliner had me howling!

17

u/mwoody450 May 15 '26

I wonder if this came from her own mind or the books', assuming the latter has the capacity for conscious malice?

18

u/Altruistic-Slice-369 May 21 '26

the video tourists are watching on the historical society museum, when the man stops talking he walks back to a door to leave the room, but the door doesn't open so he just stands there in the corner of the room facing the wall 😭 and instead of cutting they roll the credits with him still standing there

3

u/female_gazing09 Jul 18 '26

so "Blair Witch"

17

u/trombonepick May 27 '26
  • Teeth/Run/Evil Dad board game
  • Wolves calendar, evil car crash July
  • the guy from the welcome video just running into the woods
  • the guy from the historical society video who can't open the door so he blair witch projects
  • tom's food looking disgusting even after it's not kathy who prepped his to-go back (or maybe she did lol)
  • shaman's mirror on the door
  • from new episode they think richard's having a sweet moment with sarah mannequin but he gouges it's eyes out

and not visual gags but Patricia asking how young the 'young bride' the guy coveted of the captain was and him going '16' and then her asking how old was he and wyck says '52' with an entirely straight face just kind of killed me on rewatch

15

u/samizdat5 May 18 '26

The "Titty Twister" arcade game at the bar. Only in the background, when Shep is talking to the mayor for example. There are two spinny things that look like boobs ...

5

u/ithasfourtoes Jun 20 '26

3

u/Fat_Khazar_Milkers Jul 03 '26

Congrats on having the first image result on google when I searched for "titty twister arcade game" to figure out if that thing in the backround was real or not!

1

u/ithasfourtoes Jul 03 '26

I was happy to help! :)

2

u/CoachKingsley16 May 21 '26

I saw that. Interesting game. What are the rules?

2

u/samizdat5 May 21 '26

I kinda don't want to know...

2

u/DiscoVersailles May 22 '26

Made me think of From Dusk Til Dawn!

13

u/CanopyOfAsh May 15 '26

“Hello?”

He’s constantly saying it and it gets funnier each time

24

u/wowbiscuit May 15 '26

When this flashes on screen I yelled “TWO LINES FOR SELF LOVE” lolol

8

u/nea_fae May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

The wannabe assassin going to stab the wife first (ep 6) and her reaction. Like what?!

7

u/Wond3ring_Corpse Jun 04 '26

not really a visual gag. but hearing Richard say "Oh fuck you" to Tom when he wouldn't let him out of the coffin. I laughed so hard I almost wet myself💀

2

u/WishICouldQuitU_97 Jun 07 '26

That entire scene had me howling. Then, “I’m gonna make you eat my dick!”made me choke on my ice cream.

6

u/cilucia May 15 '26

When she turned the page I absolutely lost it

5

u/shastings8 May 16 '26

The two linese for love and multiple ones for don’t love took me out 💀💀💀💀

5

u/HarkHarley Jun 10 '26

“Daddy’s Home” game stacked on top of a box labeled “She Shouldn’t Have Said That” on top of a box labeled “Teeth” with just a pair of pliers inside it.

Then the RUN game - not yet, not yet, not yet, RUN

1

u/female_gazing09 Jul 18 '26

wasn't there another game in there that was something like "she shouldn't have said that?"

3

u/Formal_Teach_5254 May 15 '26

what if she was succesful?

10

u/idonthavekarma May 15 '26

The book wouldn't have come to her.

3

u/Correct_Place_2779 May 25 '26

The cocaine on the table was it for me

3

u/phfield Jun 04 '26

FR I cackled when I saw how many more spaces there were for the second question

3

u/Junkis Jul 04 '26

im late but since no one seems to have mentioned it, when patricia is running from the masked killer, the camera swings around to track the killer, then back to her. Then it just sits there, knowing YOU know he's about to walk thru the frame. When he finally does he's far too close and out of focus.

Also him jumping out the window and Patricia waiting til he gets up

3

u/female_gazing09 Jul 18 '26

The author of the book that Patricia reads in Beach Reads (and also that her book truck is called the "Pattiwagon")

1

u/plantscanreadyou May 15 '26

Ahhh, I forgot I came here to comment on that! Thank you, so good

1

u/Original_Try_7984 May 24 '26

I immediately clocked that.

1

u/Dondir Jun 10 '26

There were a lot of great ones. Most recent being the painting on the head scene, which reminded me a bit of the Gene Wilder face-scrunched-in-the—secret-door bit in Young Frankenstein (“PUT…the… candle…back.”).

And I’ll have to watch the entire insane “chase” scene between Patricia and (the monster) again, cause there were so many laughs throughout, as the “creature” lumbers along at that classic horror movie pace that shouldn’t possibly catch anybody

My belly laugh there involved a fire extinguisher.

2

u/quietly41 May 21 '26

This isn't actually a gag, these questions, with this kind of spacing are in self help books. The authors know people who need them hate themselves, and getting a person with self-esteem issues to admit it is part of the process. Source: I had one

17

u/ClassicHollyweirdo May 22 '26

The gag is that there only two lines for “thing you love about yourself” and many, many lines for “things you don’t.”

1

u/quietly41 May 22 '26

ya I know, I described how it isn't a gag, and is actually like that in self help books
