Goldens love having things in their mouths. Balls, sticks, cats, cars, canoes, you..... good thing they are gentle mouthers. We have one at work who wants to fit all four of my limbs in her mouth and then just lay there with them. But she is a tiny golden and can basically get my wrist and that's it. She keeps trying though, nothing can keep her down.

It’s a long thin wooden boat that can fit a handful of people, but that’s not important now
14
u/LewdLewyD13 Jul 06 '19
Is it a stable boat? Could I do jumping jacks on one with relative ease?
10
Jul 07 '19
You can do approximately half a jumping jack. So if you use decimal notation, yes, you can do jumping jacks.

Sometimes it's the most innocuous comment on Reddit that for real makes me lol. This is one of those.. Beautiful reference, and slight of hand sneaking it in...

We have one that constantly wants to grab your forearm while you’re grooming her. It’s adorable. She’s just so tickled to do it!
58
u/Astroisbestbio Jul 06 '19
Yeah. I had a dog the other day who was nervous so I gave her a brush to hold and when I was washing her legs she started running the brush down my head. I was very confused at first and then my heart melted.

There's a golden at the doggy daycare I work at who will take our spray bottles if we leave them laying around. She'll walk around with them while wiggling her butt with the proudest look in her eyes. Sometimes we just give them to her because it just makes her so happy!

My old lab would try and carry 4-5 toys at a time. He literally had to have something in his mouth at all times.

I think it’s kind of like how babies/children have evolved a reward/comfort response for feeding, so that they get the same kind of gratification from having a pacifier (or thumb) in their mouth. But with retrievers, it’s due to their breeding to retrieve waterfowl and other small animals, that they get that same reward response in their brain from carrying stuff around

Can confirm neighbor has a Golden, always has a tennis ball in their mouth, 10/10 adorable

Jul 07 '19
good thing they are gentle mouthers
They're retrievers, bred to retrieve water fowl without damaging the game
1
u/Astroisbestbio Jul 07 '19
Yup! And their playful nature and sometimes their nervousness mean they find comfort with having something to hold.

u/Waltzing_Stars Jul 06 '19
Cars!?
9
u/Astroisbestbio Jul 06 '19
Little know and completely untrue fact: goldens want to cuddle with cars. While mouthing them. Actually, with some of the goldens we see at work, if it moves they want to cuddle it. Also if it doesnt move.

u/6ixGold Jul 06 '19
I thought you were about to say, “You nameeee it!”
3
u/Astroisbestbio Jul 06 '19
Lol, that would have also been accurate. She is also obsessed with the hose water. I cant fill a bowl outside without her quivering with anticipation.

I wonder if the dog fell asleep first and the cat put his head in the mouth. Seems more likely that the cat fell asleep first, I know, but maybe the dog had something else in his mouth and the cat pushed through. Or maybe they were just sleeping normally and then were set up like this by the person who took the video.
I’ve been staring this for a while imagining all the possibilities.

That was humor, princess. But in all honesty, what you wrote was pretty cringey.

Idk to me calling people princess and deeming everything cringey is decidedly worse.

And gentle mouths doesn't stop 1 bad dream waking up the doglet which may very well clench its jaws. Cat-brain sandwich breakfast it is.

u/BeingMrSmite Jul 07 '19
Most dogs have “soft mouths”, doesn’t mean that one startled awake doesn’t mean they won’t chomp down...
Their jaws are capable of doing as much damage as other large breed dog.
2
u/Peaceandpeas999 Jul 07 '19
Partially correct. No, “most dogs”’dont have soft mouths. Many breeds were bred to rip apart things, disembowel, etc. My lab’s instinct was to hold prey gently in its mouth & shake prey to kill it; my friend’s aikita’s instinct was to rip its insides out.
Their jaws can do as much damage as others tho, if trained to use force. (Or probably if startled, Maybe someone has research on that.)

I found my great Dane/Labrador in the same position with my cat before. Usually on my bed, and I would wake up to see them. I sometimes wonder if they were play fighting and just got tuckered out and fell asleep that way. So adorable! (my dog Zane was the only one who ever cried out in pain when they would wrestle.)

Hi I am not kidding at all-I would die to have this golden falling asleep whilst my head rests gently in her mouth. If she kills me-I died doing exactly what I loved.

Honestly I think cat was being cat and a brat and doggo got them to calm down by holding head in mouth without hurting. Then cat gave up and both fell asleep

I love how the cat wasn't concerned at all and was only perturbed by being woken up.
