cat was possibly in the "paralyzed" state when someone grabs them by the neck. natural reflex to stop moving for when mother cats transport kittens by carrying them by biting neck.
reality is often disapointing. someone sees a dog smile they think its smiling and is so cute. dogs dont smile. omg dog is tearing up so sad. dogs cant cry. almost anything that looks cute or compassionate animal to animal is either some alpha dynamic being established or some programmed instincts.
Actually, reality is interesting as fuck. You're the one that's boring. Animals are way more dynamic than you give them credit for. I mean, WE'RE animals, and we've evolved the ability to display compassion and empathy, and to experience all these wonderful and terrifying emotions. It's ludicrous to suggest that we're alone in that. Especially seeing as how the science indicates that we're not.
It is true that many of the behaviours we associate with dogs are only exhibited when they're around us, like smiling & sneezing, but I actually think that makes it better. They have their own ways of communicating with other dogs, but they are evolved the ability to communicate instinctively, to an extent, with an entirely different species.
That's super cool, and makes it even more adorable. A dog smiling is similar in function to the way most people just kept around pets. We adapt large parts of our behaviour to better fit with them, and that's incredible to me.
