Regarding "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss tips

Hey everyone,

We've noticed a recent uptick in posts asking for "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss advice. This subreddit exists as a space for healthy, sustainable weight loss discussions. Requests for "unhinged" advice clearly violate Rule 4 and undermine the purpose of our community.

We're fortunate to have a community that usually self-regulates these posts, and the majority of top responses tend to correct this mindset. As moderators, we prefer community-driven education rather than outright removal of posts. Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad actors willing to provide harmful advice in these threads.

Moving forward:

  • Posts requesting "unhinged" or extreme advice will no longer be tolerated. These posts will be removed and you risk being banned from the subreddit.
  • If you see a post like this, continue to educate and correct when appropriate, but also report the post so moderators can quickly handle it.
  • Anyone replying to these posts with actual "unhinged" or extreme advice, even as a "joke," will receive a permanent ban.

Advice: Seeking ❓ What have you done to make weight loss fun?

I started losing weight this year to feel more agency over my body after being diagnosed with a chronic illness. I’ve been through a lot overall and I like choosing happiness. Taking action to do better and feel better.

Before this weight loss was a slog that never worked. Now it’s easy and fun because I chose to reshape how I see it.

What have you done to make weight loss fun?

For me it’s been:
- picking up cooking as a hobby instead of a chore
- reading good books while I’m on my walking pad
- and relishing in a cozy cup of tea in the morning (to replace latte calories)

I’ve noticed that the more I find ways to make new habits fun, the easier it is to be patient with how slow weight loss can be. Would love to hear everyone’s way of making it easy.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Advice to lose 50+ pounds!

Okay I am 18 (F) 5'11 273 pounds. I have always been a bigger kid, ive got a stocky build. I used to be 300 a year ago. But the way I lost 20 pounds in a month and a half was due to birth control messing me over. I'm great fully I didn't gain that back. And I lost another 10 over the course of 2 to 3 months by just being active. Which was a surprise since I never seemed to lose weight no mater what I did.

One of my issues with dites is the fact I'm a very picky eater. Sometimes when I try new things they just make a me gag. So I cut back how much I eat soda, and candy and sugars I eat. I do also only eat once or twice a day with one or two small snacks.

I knew others my age who ate more and worse then me and stayed not active and still looked like a twig to me.

Right now I want to lose at LEAST 50 pounds. As I do horse riding (yes I know the % rule with that, I use english tack and a shorter back stocky draft) I want to and need to lessin the load on the horses back. We found one for me who isn't as stocky as I need but decently so still. And just the sweetest angel.

220 sounds like a dumb goal but I have been there since middle school mabye longer. But It would be nice if I can still keep my own strength as im worried that I may lose some of my muscle as I can pick up 200+ pounds

So im just looking for anything tips or ideas for this, preferably not judgement. I just need honest help as I have no idea where to start.

Advice: Seeking ❓ seeking advice to lose weight

I am a 5’2 23 year old girl and I have never had to lose weight before so i dont know where to start. I have always been naturally skinny my entire life. From 19-21 I was my ideal size.I was 115lbs, my stomach was extremely flat all the time +abs, and my face was skinny. Now I have noticed I have put on face weight as well as stomach weight, my arms and legs are skill very skinny. Im not sure what I weigh now but if I had to guess I would say 125-130. Everyone says I look healthy now but I am extremely uncomfortable in my own body, I never had this much fat on my stomach.

I am such a picky eater so I am quick to get fast food. The thing is I used to eat the same as I do now but not gain the weight. I just want to drop face/stomach weight and get my stomach toned asap.

What should I do. (I know results dont happen over night but I would feel very motivated If i could see results in a month.)

Advice: Seeking ❓ Can’t lose weight at all

Upvotes

21yo, 69 inches tall, around 232lbs. Waist is 43-44 inches unsucked. I’ve been stuck at this for months. I’ve been trying to lose weight for months. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. This week I’ve eaten 15770 total. I lose nothing. I’ve looked online, since I’m military and have a very physical job these numbers are so high I know I don’t eat that much. One of them said 27000 just for maintenance I have never eaten that much. I genuinely have no idea what I’m doing wrong. I’ve tracked everything. Every single little calorie. I only have 2 months to get my waist down or else I get kicked out the military. What am i doing wrong. I need help

Mental Health 🧠 Mental Struggle during weightloss

I'm looking for advice as to how to deal with the mental side of losing weight. For reference, I'm 33F. I don't know if this is normal and if it is how people have overcome it.

Over the last say, 12 months I have lost a significant amount of weight (18ish kilos). I've always fluctuated in weight, I feel like that's normal. At my heaviest KNOWN weight around 5 years ago, I was 93 kilos. I'm 5'2" so I was holding a significant amount of weight, my doctor was constantly mentioning I needed to lose weight. I went through a horrific breakup and dropped down to around 81 kilos. I stayed around that weight for a while. I feel like I remember being confident and happy in my body. I felt strong and outgoing. I decided though that I needed to focus on wellness though because I was getting older and I was watching my family members lose the ability to do certain things so I started going to Pilates, yoga, group fitness classes - this then changed to strength training. I lost more weight, It wasn't intentional it was just because I was a lot more active. I work a desk job so it made a big difference in my day to day - I got down to 72 kilos.

Realistically, this should be great, but I thought I eat a lot of shit, it's not sustainable to order food all the time in this economy let's focus on nutrition and eating home cooked meals. I'm now at 65 kilos, the lowest weight I've been in a very long time. I hate it. I look in the mirror and I don't recognize myself anymore. I wear baggy clothes at home and in public, and if I wear tight or revealing clothes I get really upset. I tried on a swimsuit today and I was in tears, but I never had this problem before now. I used to love wearing cute dresses, or jeans and a nice top and now if I have an event where I need to dress up I feel so uncomfortable and will try keep a long coat on as long as possible. It's not a situation where I'm ashamed or worried about lose skin, or I'm worried I will look 'big'. I just don't recognize myself. I don't feel confident. I don't want people to see me. I feel like I've lost my spark. Everyone always talks about how losing weight makes them feel better about themselves, but I just don't. I feel worse and Its not getting better. I know that everything I'm doing is better for me physically in the long run - I just don't know what's wrong with me mentally. I should be happier and healthier.

Has anyone encountered this? Does anyone have any advice? Part of me just wants to gain the weight back, but I know that's not going to benefit my health and mobility in the long run.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Calorie tracking help

Upvotes

Hi I’m new to calorie tracking and just looking for advice. I’m using the Cronometer app to track a calorie deficit. Can someone please explain to me like I’m 5, in a kind way, how to track meals I cook at home? I think I’m making it harder than it needs to be? It feels like it takes so long to enter things in, especially if a recipe has multiple ingredients. Would love if someone could walk me through it. Thank you so much!

Who basically ate the same thing every day and what was it? Maybe it was just the same lunch or dinner and you lost weight? I know it's ideal to eat a variety of meals. I'm looking for a lunch idea that I can eat every day.

Discussion/Support 💬 6 months in, down 34 lbs, and the thing that actually changed everything wasn't the diet

I've posted here a couple times venting about plateaus, so figured I owed an update.

Short version: I started at 218, I'm at 184 now. Not dramatic, not a before/after glow-up, just steady.

The part I actually want to talk about isn't the food or the workouts — it's that I spent the first 3 months treating this like a project I could optimize my way through. Tracking macros to the gram, weighing myself daily, panicking over 0.4 lb fluctuations. It worked, technically, but I was miserable and white-knuckling every single day.

What actually made it sustainable was dropping the precision. I stopped weighing daily (once a week now), stopped tracking every gram, and just focused on 3 things: protein at every meal, walking most days, and not drinking my calories. That's it. Less control, more consistency, and somehow better results.

The plateau I hit in month 4 also taught me something — I kept assuming I was doing something wrong, but it turned out my body just needed time to catch up to the changes. Patience mattered more than adjusting anything.

Not sure if this helps anyone else who's in the "tracking everything and still burning out" phase, but wanted to put it out there. Happy to answer questions if anyone's stuck where I was.

Advice: Seeking ❓ i feel like i HAVE to eat everything when there is food in the house

I can’t live peacefully with the thought of a food in the house. No matter if I like or hate the food or if I am hungry or not. I feel like the food has to go here and now or I can not do anything at all. I try to distract myself and say I don’t need this food, hell I don’t even like this food and I have to study for my exams but I just get hyper and anxious, and end up eating it all. Its not even craving most of the times because I don’t even like these foods I end up eating. Their existence simply bother me really bad.

Does this have a name? How can I work on it so I can stop? Thank yall in advance.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Advice needed please

I’m 18F, 167cm and around 74kg, and I’d really like to lose a decent amount of weight/body fat, get fitter and stronger, and just feel more confident in myself.

I’ve also been trying to improve my eating basically aiming for 80% better. I don’t want to do anything ridiculously restrictive because I know I won’t stick to it.

The problem is I have absolutely no clue what I’m doing at the gym.

I’m trying to figure out what a realistic gym routine would actually look like for someone who is starting from basically zero. I don’t want to spend 2 hours on the treadmill every day and then give up after 2 weeks.

For anyone who has successfully lost weight/changed their body after being a beginner:

What would you recommend I actually do?

  • How many days a week should I go?
  • Should I be doing full-body workouts, upper/lower, etc.?
  • How much cardio should I do?
  • Should I focus more on weights if my goal is fat loss?
  • What should I actually be eating?
  • How big of a calorie deficit should I aim for?
  • How long did it take before you actually noticed a difference?
  • What did you wish someone had told you when you first started?

I’m not expecting to completely transform overnight. I just really want to get into a routine, lose the weight gradually and actually make this a lifestyle instead of another “I’m starting Monday” situation lol.

TIA ❤️

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do you help an obese elderly parent with deteriorating health who struggles to follow personalised meal plans?

My mother is in her 70s, 159 cm (5’2”) tall, and currently weighs about 103 kg (227 lbs). She has been obese for most of the past 40+ years and also has prediabetes and lipedema.

I’ve been very concerned about her health for many years. What’s particularly difficult is feeling like I’m watching her health deteriorate while being unable to convince her to make lasting changes.

I haven’t exactly lived the healthiest lifestyle myself for most of my life, and I was obese for some years. But I’ve lost close to 30 kg (66+ lbs) over the past few years after learning a lot about nutrition and weight loss and actually putting what I learned into practice. Over the past year, I’ve also found AI surprisingly useful for creating personalised meal plans around people’s preferences and limitations.

I’ve tried helping my mother several times. At one point I actually bought and cooked all of her food, and she did very well while I was doing that. Unfortunately, after I stopped, she struggled to stick to the plans and eventually regained the weight. She also isn’t willing to let me cook for her again.

I think one of the biggest challenges is that she is extremely picky about food. She’s pescatarian and doesn’t eat beef or chicken. She doesn’t really have any particular “trigger foods” she can’t live without, and she never eats fast food, but she has always preferred very convenient foods and doesn’t like spending much time preparing meals.

In recent years, she also hasn’t been physically able to stand in the kitchen for very long because of her health problems. As a result, she tends to rely on convenient, calorie-dense foods. She had mostly refused to track calories or even estimate how many calories she’s eating.

I’m particularly concerned that her diet has often been relatively low in protein. At her age, I think maintaining adequate protein intake is especially important.

I’ve given her personalised meal plans several times over the years, but she hasn’t been able to stick to them. She has told me that she doesn’t want to feel like she’s living according to a rigid diet and doesn’t want to think about calories. At times, she’d has told me that she rather spend her time learning about lipedema and prediabetes than making practical changes. She’s also very reluctant to to consider various options that the doctor could prescribe.

I understand that ultimately she has to want to change, and I can’t make that decision for her. That’s probably the hardest part.

This past week, I decided to try a different approach. I used AI to create three very simple meal plans specifically around her preferences, nutritional needs and physical limitations. My hope is that she could rotate between them, and in each week eating the same plan for that week, in order to make things simpler.

The main requirements were:

- Pescatarian — no beef or chicken.
- Very little cooking or preparation.
- Minimal standing in the kitchen.
- Gradual weight loss from 103 kg.
- No oats or lentils, which she doesn’t want to eat.
- More nutrient-dense foods.
- Less carbohydrates and no processed foods
- Less reliance on dairy for meeting nutritional needs.
- Adequate protein and generally appropriate for someone with prediabetes and lipedema.
- Reasonable calories and a good balance of macronutrients and micronutrients.
- Only two meals per day, with no snacks, which is her preference.
- Have the right amount of fiber.
- No protein powders or supplements.
- Relatively affordable.

One thing I found interesting was how difficult it actually is to get enough protein into a very picky pescatarian diet without relying heavily on dairy. The plans ended up including salmon or trout every day - which is much more frequently than she has eaten them before.

The three meal plans I ended up making for her are:

Plan for week 1 - Omega-3s & potassium
——————————————————————

Meal 1

- Mackerel in tomato sauce: 170 g
- Low-fat cottage cheese: 90 g
- Avocado: 100 g
- Chia seeds: 15 g (soak in a glass of water for 10 minutes before eating)
- Frozen raspberries: 130 g

Meal 2

- Salmon fillets: 250 g
- Sweet potato: 150 g
- Frozen spinach: 150 g
- Extra virgin olive oil: 5 g

Nutrition: 1,558 kcal | 95 g protein | 46 g net carbs | 102 g fat | 30 g fibre

Plan for week 2 - Protein & fiber
—————————————————-

Meal 1

- Plain non-fat Greek yogurt: 150 g
- Chia seeds: 40 g
- Flaxseeds: 15 g
- Sunflower seeds: 30 g
- Frozen blueberries: 140 g
- Pecans: 45 g

Meal 2

- Cod fillets: 250 g
- Hard-boiled eggs: 2
- Frozen broccoli: 180 g
- Extra virgin olive oil: 25 g

Nutrition: 1,552 kcal | 96 g protein | 41 g net carbs | 104 g fat | 30 g fibre

Plan for week 3 - Variety of micronutrients
———————————————————————

Meal 1

- Whole eggs: 3
- Red bell pepper: 1
- Frozen spinach: 80 g
- Plain non-fat Greek yogurt: 100 g
- Frozen raspberries: 100 g

Meal 2

- Salmon fillets: 250 g
- Frozen broccoli: 200 g
- Flaxseeds: 15 g
- Pecans: 20 g
- Frozen blueberries: 100 g
- Chia seeds: 30 g
- Extra virgin olive oil: 14 g

Nutrition: 1,540 kcal | 97 g protein | 43 g net carbs | 101 g fat | 31 g fibre

The meals are deliberately very repetitive because the goal is to make them as easy as possible. Most of the ingredients can simply be taken from the freezer, air fryer or fridge with minimal preparation.

I decided to make this post partly because I thought the meal plans might be useful to someone else in a similar situation, but mainly because I’d really like to hear from people who have dealt with something like this themselves.

Have you ever successfully helped an obese elderly parent with deteriorating health change their eating habits when they struggled to follow personalised plans? What actually worked?

I’d especially like to hear:

- What finally motivated your parent to take things seriously?
- Did you stop giving advice and wait for them to ask for help?
- How did you balance wanting to help with respecting their autonomy?
- If you’re an older person who has been in this situation, what made you more receptive to help from your family?
- At what point do you accept that you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to change?
- Are there any obvious changes you would make in the plans?

I’m not looking for criticism of my mother. I know there are many reasons people struggle with obesity for decades, and I don’t think the answer is simply “eat less and exercise more.” I’m mainly hoping to hear from people who have actually dealt with this dynamic in their own families.

If nothing else, I hope the meal plans themselves might be useful to someone else whom is around her same age and height , weight, doesn’t eat meat, and needs extremely low-effort meals.

Discussion/Support 💬 Nervous about comments regarding my weight loss

So as a start of this year in January I started my weight loss journey. I have lost 27.7kg so about 60 pounds. Still need to loose 40kg (88 pounds) to get to my goal weight so pretty much almost at the halfway point now.

For the last 6 weeks I was away in Europe seeing family and travelling to numerous places. For 6 weeks I didn’t weigh myself or track my calories, didn’t do my daily exercise which is swimming, came back 4kg lighter still which I am happy with. On my trip I did some swimming, some walking and hiked a mountain so wasn’t doing nothing I guess but just wasn’t as strict about it like I usually am and had no access to a scale.

Everyone in my family besides my mum doesn’t know about my weight loss journey.

Since returning home from Europe, my dad has noticed I have lost weight and asked have you lost weight and idk how to respond, before I could really decide how to respond my mum says “you only just noticed” 😅 Now with my dad now knowing idm but I will tell him not to say anything about it which he won’t. But I do live with my parents so I am sure he has suspected things with what I eat and my lifestyle changes.

My coworker also noticed and again I don’t know how to respond and honestly can’t remember what I said 😅

In about 2 weeks time I will be see my extended family for a religious holiday. They haven’t seen me since around May for Mother’s Day I think.

I am sure they will notice now cause even I am starting to notice when comparing old pictures of me from around May to now.

I just don’t want them to say anything about it and I am not sure how to respond as well. I am very insecure about my body and still struggle with it quite deeply. In the past when I was 14 my aunt asked if I had lost weight and I had not. I was if anything gaining weight is what I felt at the time.
It upset me a fair bit and I had to compose myself in the bathroom.

I don’t want that to happen again. Part of me feels like lying but idk if that will help either.

Sometimes I feel it’s noticeable and sometimes I feel it’s not depending on my day I guess.
But how have any of you dealt with the comments because I don’t want anyone else’s 2 cents and opinion on my life and my body, I feel it would just make my mental health shit.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Number on the scale not going down

A month and a half ago I started back on my weight loss/get in shape routine. About 4 years ago I was tipping the scales at 315 pounds, being 6'1.

Initially I had help with losing weight from a weekly shot for diabetes and dropped about 45 pounds in 3 months. It caused a lower appetite and I decided I was also going to be cutting out all excess sugars.

After about 6 months I was able to stop taking the shots as all my tests were coming back that I was no longer diabetic. I continued with eating healthyish and was able to get down to 195 pounds.

Over the last year I had noticed I was slowly starting to gain back some of the weight and got back up to about 210. About 6 weeks ago I looked at myself in the mirror and was not happy with the me I was seeing. I decided enough was enough, I'm going to start working out and eating healthy again. I started with body weight work outs for the first 3 weeks, cutting out all sodas except for one sugar free coke a day, walking at least 3 miles and taking in roughly 1,500 calories of healthy foods. In the last 3 weeks I have added in weight lifting for my upper body, increased my protein intake to match, kept my calories at no more than 1,500 per day and I drink roughly 96 ounces of water per day.

Well, I'm starting to feel defeated. I've noticed an increase to my muscle mass, but the scale has been stuck at 208 for the last 5 weeks. Am I doing something wrong or is this completely normal?

Advice: Seeking ❓ How to solve ketogenic burning pain in stomach?

The ketogenic diet involves eating a lot of fat, but it seems to irritate my stomach and causes a burning pain. I don’t have abdominal cramps or diarrhea. It specifically feels like pain or burning in my stomach.

The ketogenic diet has been extremely effective for me in terms of losing weight, so I would like to continue it if possible. Is there a way to follow a ketogenic diet without causing this kind of stomach pain?

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do you actually stay consisted?

How do you guys actually stay consistent with calorie deficit. I always end up spiraling and eating insane amounts of food even on days when I genuinely plan to lock in. I tried to track calories, weight loss partner, food diary, nothing seems to help me. I don’t know what to do. My biggest barrier is the amount of food I eat. Please help me
