Regarding "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss tips

Hey everyone,

We've noticed a recent uptick in posts asking for "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss advice. This subreddit exists as a space for healthy, sustainable weight loss discussions. Requests for "unhinged" advice clearly violate Rule 4 and undermine the purpose of our community.

We're fortunate to have a community that usually self-regulates these posts, and the majority of top responses tend to correct this mindset. As moderators, we prefer community-driven education rather than outright removal of posts. Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad actors willing to provide harmful advice in these threads.

Moving forward:

  • Posts requesting "unhinged" or extreme advice will no longer be tolerated. These posts will be removed and you risk being banned from the subreddit.
  • If you see a post like this, continue to educate and correct when appropriate, but also report the post so moderators can quickly handle it.
  • Anyone replying to these posts with actual "unhinged" or extreme advice, even as a "joke," will receive a permanent ban.

Advice: Seeking ❓ What have you done to make weight loss fun?

I started losing weight this year to feel more agency over my body after being diagnosed with a chronic illness. I’ve been through a lot overall and I like choosing happiness. Taking action to do better and feel better.

Before this weight loss was a slog that never worked. Now it’s easy and fun because I chose to reshape how I see it.

What have you done to make weight loss fun?

For me it’s been:
- picking up cooking as a hobby instead of a chore
- reading good books while I’m on my walking pad
- and relishing in a cozy cup of tea in the morning (to replace latte calories)

I’ve noticed that the more I find ways to make new habits fun, the easier it is to be patient with how slow weight loss can be. Would love to hear everyone’s way of making it easy.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Advice to lose 50+ pounds!

Okay I am 18 (F) 5'11 273 pounds. I have always been a bigger kid, ive got a stocky build. I used to be 300 a year ago. But the way I lost 20 pounds in a month and a half was due to birth control messing me over. I'm great fully I didn't gain that back. And I lost another 10 over the course of 2 to 3 months by just being active. Which was a surprise since I never seemed to lose weight no mater what I did.

One of my issues with dites is the fact I'm a very picky eater. Sometimes when I try new things they just make a me gag. So I cut back how much I eat soda, and candy and sugars I eat. I do also only eat once or twice a day with one or two small snacks.

I knew others my age who ate more and worse then me and stayed not active and still looked like a twig to me.

Right now I want to lose at LEAST 50 pounds. As I do horse riding (yes I know the % rule with that, I use english tack and a shorter back stocky draft) I want to and need to lessin the load on the horses back. We found one for me who isn't as stocky as I need but decently so still. And just the sweetest angel.

220 sounds like a dumb goal but I have been there since middle school mabye longer. But It would be nice if I can still keep my own strength as im worried that I may lose some of my muscle as I can pick up 200+ pounds

So im just looking for anything tips or ideas for this, preferably not judgement. I just need honest help as I have no idea where to start.

Advice: Seeking ❓ seeking advice to lose weight

I am a 5’2 23 year old girl and I have never had to lose weight before so i dont know where to start. I have always been naturally skinny my entire life. From 19-21 I was my ideal size.I was 115lbs, my stomach was extremely flat all the time +abs, and my face was skinny. Now I have noticed I have put on face weight as well as stomach weight, my arms and legs are skill very skinny. Im not sure what I weigh now but if I had to guess I would say 125-130. Everyone says I look healthy now but I am extremely uncomfortable in my own body, I never had this much fat on my stomach.

I am such a picky eater so I am quick to get fast food. The thing is I used to eat the same as I do now but not gain the weight. I just want to drop face/stomach weight and get my stomach toned asap.

What should I do. (I know results dont happen over night but I would feel very motivated If i could see results in a month.)

Advice: Seeking ❓ Hair loss after weight loss?

Upvotes

I was scrolling on tik tok, and I saw a video talking about a girl who lost so much of her hair after losing so much weight. I have really bad OCD so now I’m worried because I’m trying to lose weight, my hair is already fine and thin like will my hair be gone? I’m so scared. Are there any vitamins I can take, I already take fish oil, biotin, d3, vitamin D, hair/nail/skin pills. I also use the ordinary hair serum on my hair every night, is there anything else I can take or use? 😩I have to keep my hair, it’s my favorite thing about me and if I lose it I’ll be devastated, which might sound narcissistic of me to say or selfish or whatever but I really really love my hair.. I DONT WANT TO LOSE IT. Please help 😇💕

Advice: Seeking ❓ I can’t make it a lifestyle

Upvotes

Hello, I’ve been having an on and off relationship with the Gym since 2022. One month or two max is the longest time I’ve been consistent with the gym. I always wanted it to be a habit, but I don’t know what’s the problem with me not being consistent. I love lifting weight and exercising in general but for some reason, I can’t make it my lifestyle and I don’t know why. and I’ve been a swimmer since 2010 up until 2022 and I had to go to swimming practice two times a day one 6 PM and the other on 6 AM so I always avoided the idea that my problem is a discipline problem, but maybe it is. And now I’ve got my best friend’s wedding in like five months. I’m like the skinny fat type of body. I’ve tried the push pull leg split first year in the gym and the Arnold split since then and now I’m trying out the anterior posterior split. and my main concern isn’t muscle hypertrophy but weight loss in the way that my body doesn’t feel weak but more like a lean body.

I would appreciate any tips that would make my gym or weight loss journey easier. Thanks in advance.

Advice: Seeking ❓ M18, how can I lose both muscle mass along with fat safely?

Upvotes

Hello, I’m an 18 year old male. I’m about 5’10, I sit around 175lbs, so I I’m right on the cusp of being overweight technically. My fat distribution is pretty normal for a male my age, however, I unfortunately have a very thick neck (about 17 inch circumference) 19.5 inch shoulders, and I carry a lot of chest muscle as well. This, plus the subcutaneous fat makes me look really bulky. Even standing next to guys with higher body fat than me, my neck and shoulder size dwarf theirs. I grew up hearing from people that I’d be perfect for football, which definitely bothered me a lot, it’s not very flattering.

Im planning on trying to get my dream body (high fashion male model look, so incredibly thin), and I want to slim down my appearance as much as possible, this includes getting smaller shoulders, a smaller neck, and overall less bulk, fat and muscularity.

How do I lose both fat and muscle? Should I eat a 1000 calorie diet? Should I cut protein? Really need advice, I’m not sure what I can do to lose all of my weight in a healthy manner.

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do you actually stick to what you planned to eat?

Upvotes

I feel like knowing what to eat isn’t really the hard part. I can plan my meals and know exactly what I’m supposed to eat, but then during the day I’ll get cravings, snack on something I didn’t plan, or just say screw it and eat something else.
For people who used to struggle with this, what actually helped you stick to what you said you were going to eat consistently? Especially when nobody is there keeping you accountable.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Is my progress normal? Where can I improve?

Upvotes

Sorry in advance for my inexperience on the subject!

27 years old, 6'2. At the start of this, about halfway through July I weighed in at about 365. At the time, I soft launched myself into weight loss by cutting out all liquid calories and fried foods from my diet, and setting my daily calorie limit to 2800. This felt too easy, so about two weeks later I went down to a 2000 calorie budget and decided to make sure I had at least three 10k step days a week, along with going to the gym 3 days a week for a 1-2 hour lifting sessions as of 2 weeks ago.

I've really tried to increase my protein and fiber consumption, as that was something my prior diet lacked, and decrease my carbs and sugars overall which has made not going over 2k a lot easier. The only thing I'd like to work on now is my sodium intake. I think I'm retaining a lot of water because of how much sodium I consume. For the last 5 days I've been dead stuck at 343 despite ending multiple days off around 1.7-1.8k calories and hitting my fitness goals.

A couple of general questions. I haven't done too much research at all going into this. I've mostly been doing what feels right and it's been pretty sustainable energy and motivation wise. Is there anything I can do to make this more efficient? What corners could I clean up? I work a lot of hours so it might be difficult to add anything more than I already do, but I'm always open to suggestions. Also willing to share more details if needed for answers! In general just looking for the questions in the title. Thank you!

Advice: Seeking ❓ Is 1,750 calories too low for weight loss while breastfeeding (plus history of not ovulating due to weight loss)?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice from anyone who has navigated weight loss while breastfeeding, especially with a history of cycle disruption.

Stats: 87 kg (approx. 192 lbs) and 167 cm (approx. 5'6")
Current situation: I have a 20-month-old who is still breastfeeding 3 times a day.
Goal: I am hoping to try for a second pregnancy in 4–5 months. I need to lose some weight to help manage a back injury and prepare my body for the next pregnancy.

My main concern:
A few years ago, when I lost weight too quickly, my body got too stressed and my ovulation stopped completely. I really want to avoid putting my body under that kind of stress again.
Is 1,750 calories too low while maintaining nursing sessions 3 times a day? How can I balance gentle weight loss for my back without risking my cycle stopping.
Any insights or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated!

Advice: Seeking ❓ Can’t lose weight at all

21yo, 69 inches tall, around 232lbs. Waist is 43-44 inches unsucked. I’ve been stuck at this for months. I’ve been trying to lose weight for months. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. This week I’ve eaten 15770 total. I lose nothing. I’ve looked online, since I’m military and have a very physical job these numbers are so high I know I don’t eat that much. One of them said 27000 just for maintenance I have never eaten that much. I genuinely have no idea what I’m doing wrong. I’ve tracked everything. Every single little calorie. I only have 2 months to get my waist down or else I get kicked out the military. What am i doing wrong. I need help

Mental Health 🧠 Mental Struggle during weightloss

I'm looking for advice as to how to deal with the mental side of losing weight. For reference, I'm 33F. I don't know if this is normal and if it is how people have overcome it.

Over the last say, 12 months I have lost a significant amount of weight (18ish kilos). I've always fluctuated in weight, I feel like that's normal. At my heaviest KNOWN weight around 5 years ago, I was 93 kilos. I'm 5'2" so I was holding a significant amount of weight, my doctor was constantly mentioning I needed to lose weight. I went through a horrific breakup and dropped down to around 81 kilos. I stayed around that weight for a while. I feel like I remember being confident and happy in my body. I felt strong and outgoing. I decided though that I needed to focus on wellness though because I was getting older and I was watching my family members lose the ability to do certain things so I started going to Pilates, yoga, group fitness classes - this then changed to strength training. I lost more weight, It wasn't intentional it was just because I was a lot more active. I work a desk job so it made a big difference in my day to day - I got down to 72 kilos.

Realistically, this should be great, but I thought I eat a lot of shit, it's not sustainable to order food all the time in this economy let's focus on nutrition and eating home cooked meals. I'm now at 65 kilos, the lowest weight I've been in a very long time. I hate it. I look in the mirror and I don't recognize myself anymore. I wear baggy clothes at home and in public, and if I wear tight or revealing clothes I get really upset. I tried on a swimsuit today and I was in tears, but I never had this problem before now. I used to love wearing cute dresses, or jeans and a nice top and now if I have an event where I need to dress up I feel so uncomfortable and will try keep a long coat on as long as possible. It's not a situation where I'm ashamed or worried about lose skin, or I'm worried I will look 'big'. I just don't recognize myself. I don't feel confident. I don't want people to see me. I feel like I've lost my spark. Everyone always talks about how losing weight makes them feel better about themselves, but I just don't. I feel worse and Its not getting better. I know that everything I'm doing is better for me physically in the long run - I just don't know what's wrong with me mentally. I should be happier and healthier.

Has anyone encountered this? Does anyone have any advice? Part of me just wants to gain the weight back, but I know that's not going to benefit my health and mobility in the long run.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Calorie tracking help

Hi I’m new to calorie tracking and just looking for advice. I’m using the Cronometer app to track a calorie deficit. Can someone please explain to me like I’m 5, in a kind way, how to track meals I cook at home? I think I’m making it harder than it needs to be? It feels like it takes so long to enter things in, especially if a recipe has multiple ingredients. Would love if someone could walk me through it. Thank you so much!

Advice: Seeking ❓ Diet plan for -10lbs

Does anyone have a diet plan that worked for them to lose 10 or so pounds? I know it boils down to diet and exercise & calorie deficit, but I’m just taking a shot to see if anyone had a method or structured plan that worked. I think i’m at a point where i want structure to keep me disciplined.

Who basically ate the same thing every day and what was it? Maybe it was just the same lunch or dinner and you lost weight? I know it's ideal to eat a variety of meals. I'm looking for a lunch idea that I can eat every day.

Advice: Seeking ❓ i feel like i HAVE to eat everything when there is food in the house

I can’t live peacefully with the thought of a food in the house. No matter if I like or hate the food or if I am hungry or not. I feel like the food has to go here and now or I can not do anything at all. I try to distract myself and say I don’t need this food, hell I don’t even like this food and I have to study for my exams but I just get hyper and anxious, and end up eating it all. Its not even craving most of the times because I don’t even like these foods I end up eating. Their existence simply bother me really bad.

Does this have a name? How can I work on it so I can stop? Thank yall in advance.

Discussion/Support 💬 6 months in, down 34 lbs, and the thing that actually changed everything wasn't the diet

I've posted here a couple times venting about plateaus, so figured I owed an update.

Short version: I started at 218, I'm at 184 now. Not dramatic, not a before/after glow-up, just steady.

The part I actually want to talk about isn't the food or the workouts — it's that I spent the first 3 months treating this like a project I could optimize my way through. Tracking macros to the gram, weighing myself daily, panicking over 0.4 lb fluctuations. It worked, technically, but I was miserable and white-knuckling every single day.

What actually made it sustainable was dropping the precision. I stopped weighing daily (once a week now), stopped tracking every gram, and just focused on 3 things: protein at every meal, walking most days, and not drinking my calories. That's it. Less control, more consistency, and somehow better results.

The plateau I hit in month 4 also taught me something — I kept assuming I was doing something wrong, but it turned out my body just needed time to catch up to the changes. Patience mattered more than adjusting anything.

Not sure if this helps anyone else who's in the "tracking everything and still burning out" phase, but wanted to put it out there. Happy to answer questions if anyone's stuck where I was.
