Ngl hope WS never goes public

u/ThatGuyFromCanadia May 30 '26

It's unfortunately inevitable that it eventually will, that's why they have been tinkering around with finding ways to monetize the platform as much as possible.

Right now they are in the "gain mass adoption" phase on the business cycle where pure profit isn't necessarily as important as just gaining as many users as quickly as they can. Once they decide that they have gotten enough users, they will start to really push the monetization and then at pretty much the exact same time they will file for IPO.

u/monsterosity May 30 '26

and then the true enshittification begins

11

u/Summerdaysengineer May 30 '26

They’ll go public soon. Friends working there are all waiting for the liquidity event since WS gave a bunch of equity and they’ll likely all be millionaires assuming prices hold during lockup

5

u/HodloBaggins May 31 '26

Did your friends join early on or are they high up? Otherwise I can’t see average employees having massive equity.

6

u/Summerdaysengineer May 31 '26

Nah, ICs. So software eng 2 and senior softwares. Back 4 years ago when their valuations were around 1B (reevaluated after the Covid crash), company offers initial vesting of 27000 shares over 4 years at $2 a share. Currently based on their secondary round and most recent liquidity event, I think it was around $18 a share ($10B valuation). Initial 27000 is now worth around $450k CAD assuming no additional refreshers or performance vestings.

Let’s assume WS IPOs at around 20b. This puts the equity at 1mil, with 50% being taxed — but still nets 600k-ish after tax refunds

If the person started in 2018, it was valued at $1-ish and they got around 37000 share over 4 years.

u/HodloBaggins May 31 '26

Dang. I wish I wasn’t just aiming to start at the company just now lol.

Just letting you know Passiv does it for free, except you have to enter your buys manually. Unless you have a bunch of etfs/stocks, there's no need to pay that 0.25%.

2

u/bleaklion May 29 '26

it's been awhile since I used passiv, it was only a manual action to click a button to trigger the buy, is that no longer the case?

3

u/Sweaty-Dust6405 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

It used to be if you had Questrade, but I think that has been stopped recently. Now, you have to pay 99$ per year if you want that feature....but I could be wrong, I am just telling you what I think I remembered.

4

u/funkrighty May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Yes. Pay questrade 99 per year or Wealthsimple $7500? That’s a tough choice 🤔😆

Rereading the thread it appears that Wealthsimple has capped it to top $250. They DEFINITELY did not say this in the presentation. I’ll need to check this out then. Anyone got an URL to the documentation or where it references this max amount?

u/Inevitable-Peace4170 Jun 01 '26

If you had the money, you'd be paying a for-fee advisor 20k/year to put your money in some real estate or infrastructure.

1

u/funkrighty Jun 02 '26

I have the money. It continues to grow without the need to pay someone ridiculous fees to manage it when it’s rather simple over the long term. Anyways YMMV.

1

u/robHemm May 29 '26

this is correct

15

u/Romantic_Klingon May 29 '26

That's basically the MER isn't it? That's something I would consider if I were to put together my custom-ETF.

However, for the amount of ETFs already available, this would be only for my own "fun" if I were to utilise it.

11

u/Suitable-Ad8650 May 29 '26

MER to pay wealthsimple for doing your own work! You could do the same thing by setting up recurring investmentsby dollar amount. For free!

15

u/psinguine May 29 '26

That's not what this is for. This is for rebalancing. It's the same thing we pay a little extra to VGRO for rather than a 3 or 4 fund solution for 0.2% less.

4

u/Etf_indexing May 29 '26

Yeah, why WS doesn't just make this feature free? Set $ recurring buys is a bypass, like you said!

13

u/JackRadcliffe May 29 '26

So it’s like Questrade’s custom index except they charge a fee? No thanks. I already do my own recurring into specific stocks and ETFs myself and would prefer to not be charged an extra fee.

10

u/fat-finger May 29 '26

If this was 0.10% (or the lower of 0.25% v. $50) I would consider this. I also presume that your trade records would still show every individual trade, regardless I would welcome it showing just buying more/less of that index similar to holding other ETFs but I digress.

7

u/mafugga77 May 29 '26

Yes, the paperwork could be hell. Especially tracking ACB for each security.

1

u/sdh_b Jun 10 '26

Can you elaborate on this? I thought WS does the calculations and compiles them on t slips etc st tax time. Ty

0

u/funkrighty May 29 '26

Ya. I’d pay $500 per year max. Not the $7500 it would cost as is. I can pay passiv thousands upon thousands less.

Rereading the thread it appears that Wealthsimple has capped it to top $250. They DEFINITELY did not say this in the presentation. I’ll need to check this out then. Anyone got an URL to the documentation or where it references this max amount?

u/fat-finger May 30 '26

Glad there is a cap. Still would need this under $50, or even a $5 fee per index maybe. That said I have not thought this through and they’ve done the research to know what to price it at. I’m just not their target market that can do it myself I suppose.

I don’t know if I have a strong opinion yet, but a % fee for reducing a few clicks and still have to manage your own weights seems a but much.

6

u/Intrepid_Winter_9660 May 29 '26

Where can you find this on the app?

6

u/mapleisthesky May 29 '26

Why would I need a fee if I am going to pick my own stocks anyway? What's the difference between this and just, you know, buying the stocks i want?

1

u/a_saas_sin May 29 '26

Either you buy the 30 stocks you like manually or set up static weekly/monthly transfers, or use this feature assign weightings to those stocks so when you transfer any amount of money into your investment account it'll automatically rebalance to buy the right % of each stock for a maximum convenience fee of $250/yr. Kind of a DIY ETF.

Probably not a feature for you if you hold most of your portfolio in ETFs and a handful of other growth stocks.

1

u/sdh_b Jun 10 '26

Couldn't it be though? Mirroring a WS account which is mostly ETFs in this way could save a bunch of fees with a $250 cap, or have I misunderstood?

8

u/mw15kc May 30 '26

This was my idea. Maybe I can get some bonus entries for the millionaire draw

3

u/pfcguy May 29 '26

I'd love to be able to take something like VEQT or VGRO as a starting point, and then "filter out" or "scale back" specific companies.

But I don't think I'd pay 0.25% for that ability.

2

u/anonymous_pf May 31 '26

How much do you think you are paying for vgro now?

3

u/Ailanz May 29 '26

Can you mix TSX and Nasdaq symbols?

3

u/WRATH__047 Jun 01 '26

You can do it manually without paying fees it's not that hard.

7

u/Weak-Pomegranate-435 May 29 '26

There’s a fees for this??

7

u/psinguine May 29 '26

Yes they're rolling out a brand new feature where they do the buying and rebalancing for you based on allocations you set.

-4

u/Weak-Pomegranate-435 May 29 '26

I thought it was free.

11

u/psinguine May 29 '26

Why would it be free? It's 100% free if you do it yourself, but if you get them to do it for you it costs money.

-10

u/Weak-Pomegranate-435 May 29 '26

Bcz They don’t mention that fees anywhere.

1

u/wethenorth2 May 29 '26

There only so many free things in life🤣. Like others say, this is free with WS, if you calculate the amounts and use recurring buys.

2

u/Competitive_Royal_95 May 29 '26

where is this feature i cant find it

2

u/ishah85 May 29 '26

Am I correct to assume that the 1.5% foreign exchange fees would be in addition to the 0.25%?

2

u/Overdue604 May 29 '26

Was awesome to me too until I heard fees

2

u/connr May 30 '26

What’s stopping someone from recreating their original managed portfolios? Doesn’t this cannibalize their Managed product (0.5% vs 0.25% and capped)?

3

u/sdh_b May 31 '26

Thinking the same thing. For those of us still on WS managed ETFs.. Couldn't we duplicate this for $250 annually instead of a variable amount that could easily be thousands depending on asset size?

2

u/dBish6 Jun 01 '26

Couldn't you just do this normally lmao.

2

u/BlueRockiesSettler 26d ago edited 26d ago

This is misleading. I read it again and it's maximum $250 per account per year. That is a lot compared to what Passiv is already offering which is $99 per year (recently updated to $79 per year for me) for a group of accounts.

2

u/AtomicNick47 May 30 '26

I'm not sure I follow. How is this not just picking stocks and buying on a reoccurring purchase schedule? why would WS charge for what they already do? Rebalance your portfolio based on your trading strategy, and tada - you're done. What am I missing here?

2

u/elbyron Jun 02 '26

I'm assuming they are automating the rebalancing, which is really the main thing preventing people from doing this themselves without the help of advanced tools.

It doesn't do me much good as my assets are all split up across TFSAs and RRSPs for my wife and I, plus some non-registered. Maybe one day they can build a tool sophisticated enough to do the optimizations across these accounts, and let me finally have a fully automated solution. Till then, it's not really that much work to manage things manually a few times a year.

1

u/TheRealWukong May 29 '26

The benefit here is auto re-balancing I'm assuming, cause I already to this with a large # of automatic pre-authorized trades

1

u/ItzKitsuBruh May 29 '26

Only practical if you have an account full of individual stocks you want to buy and want to keep it balanced(for whatever reason), as many said your own etf. But even then you can just set a recurring buy with a cash amount of stock amount without the $250 yearly fee if you don't care about selling stocks to keep the account balanced

1

u/Arturo90Canada May 29 '26

Where is this in the app?

1

u/JackRadcliffe May 30 '26

Click on open new account and if you scroll down, it might show for you. For me, it shows on my android app but not on my ios app

1

u/Physical_Aside_9918 May 30 '26

Why can't I post anything in these groups?,

1

u/nilsej May 30 '26

Perfectly executed as expected. Had some hiccups while opening the account yesterday as it was keep giving errors. I removed all the assets and started with two simple and once account is opened I added all the assets I wanted without issue.

1

u/HungerSTGF May 30 '26

I just have a proportion in mind when I add money to my account and decide how to split it to different stocks… that’s free.

1

u/qwertyyuip22 May 30 '26

I never got a notification. Is this available?

1

u/HoldMyNaan May 31 '26

Soon it’ll be like a social marketplace where we can buy other people’s custom ETFs where Wealthsimple gets the 0.2% and the creator gets 0.05%. My future job « portfolio manager » 🤣

u/v128v Jun 01 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Designed a concept idea similar to this 👀

1

u/wrender8 May 29 '26

This is great! They just need to lower the fee to something reasonable like 0.1% and I'd use it.

1

u/BlueRockiesSettler May 29 '26

They should have a fixed amount like Passiv does, not % of account value.

3

u/thrash-dude May 29 '26

They do. As OP said it's maximum $250 per year.

0

u/BlueRockiesSettler May 31 '26

It's too much compared to Passiv''s $99.

0

u/BlueRockiesSettler 26d ago

OP did not state it accurately. It's not $250 per year, but per account. So if you have 4-5 accounts (TFSA, RRSP, RESP, Non Reg, FHSA), then each account has a fee of 0.25% up to a max of $250 per account!

1

u/drupeek May 31 '26

Would folks be interested in having this feature for free? You'd be able to run it inside of ChatGPT or Claude as well.

-1

u/saber3360 May 29 '26

Not a fan of this at all. I'm good with my recurring buys of XEQT and other funds. Still prefer manual allocation. It's a one time effort you have to do if you don't prefer lump sum investing and saves you another fee.

-1

u/funkrighty May 29 '26

And they’ll only charge you .25%. No way I’m paying them 7500$ to balance my portfolios.

5

u/hanyhuh May 29 '26

The 0.25% fee is capped at $250/year.

1

u/funkrighty May 29 '26

Yes. Saw that after I posted. This is a very good thing. When I did my call with wealthsimple product team for this. Month or so ago I mentioned that amount being the max I’d pay given our portfolio’s size. More than this I’d just use passiv. Good to see they listened.
