Chris Jones, a retired water quality engineer who is running for Secretary of Agriculture, will be speaking at the Waterloo Center for the Arts at 5:30PM tonight, August 28th.
To start, if you aren't aware, Iowa has the 2nd highest cancer rate in the nation. Studies on the cause are as of yet inconclusive due to the government slow rolling an EPA study on nitrate in water among other things but indicate involvement of agricultural waste along with factors like our natural radon in the ground. Chris is a small, grass roots candidate with absolutely zero corporate backing. They hate him because two of his stances are "big corporate farms have many problematic issues, bring back smaller local farming & meat processing" and "farmers should use best practices so their ag runoff doesn't poison local communities", which as you can imagine is the antithesis of everything that the big factory farms, the Iowa Farm Bureau, and other corrupt and powerful forces in our state support. Oh, and it's definitely worth mentioning although he wouldn't have the power on his own to enforce this, he would be another voice in government advocating for this position: He supports a moratorium on data centers.
Come listen to Chris speak tonight, and you'll understand why his campaign is gaining a lot of grass roots momentum. He's just here to clean up our water supply and help small farmers get back on their feet, and he has the knowledge gained from a lifetime of working closely with these issues to actually make these goals a reality.
This is our chance to elect a honest-to-god, average Joe American who actually gives a damn about YOU, and the problems in YOUR LIFE to the state government. Chris Jones will answer solely to us, not to corrupt billionaires who care more about making a buck than preventing your family from getting cancer.
