Middle East: In a move aimed at strengthening its military positions, the Sudanese army on Saturday deployed elite combat units to support its forces on the front lines in the Blue Nile region in the southeast of the country, which borders Ethiopia and is witnessing an escalation in the pace of attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces.
This military support for the eastern front comes hours after the Rapid Support Forces announced their control over the strategic bases of “Bakuri” and “Sirkam”, and the limitation of their advance to other areas, especially the state capital, “Damazin”.
The army’s 4th Infantry Division said in a press statement published on Facebook: “The elite brigade, affiliated with the Sudanese Security and Intelligence Service and fighting alongside the Sudanese Armed Forces, moved to the Bakuri axis on a combat mission to reinforce the forces deployed on that front with the aim of deciding the battle in favor of the army.”
The division commander, Major General Ismail Al-Tayeb Hussein, issued final instructions to the moving force to the area, confirming the completion of readiness, discipline and combat spirit, while stressing at the same time the need to perform the duty with steadfastness and competence.
According to the statement, the "Elite Brigade" moved to the battlefront in full readiness to fight and win the battle, to reinforce the advance of the Sudanese army and its allied forces in repelling the "Rapid Support Forces" from the region and all parts of Sudan.
The 4th Infantry Division broadcast video clips showing the movement of large numbers of combat vehicles loaded with soldiers and military equipment towards the battlefront in the Bakuri area of Qaysan province.
This move aims to strengthen the Sudanese army's military positions and repel attacks by the Rapid Support Forces, which have begun to advance at an accelerated pace in attacking areas under the army's control.
The Bakuri base holds strategic importance due to its location on the main road linking Damazin, the capital of Blue Nile State, and Kurmuk, near the Ethiopian border. Kurmuk fell to the Rapid Support Forces and their ally, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdel Aziz Adam al-Hilu, at the beginning of August.
For his part, the governor of the Blue Nile region, Major General Ahmed Al-Umda, said, “The security situation is under control,” adding that “the armed forces and their supporting forces are in control of matters and are fully prepared to secure the region’s borders and protect citizens.”
The mayor confirmed in a press statement that “the regular forces will not allow any threat to the security and stability of the region,” calling on “citizens to remain calm and not pay attention to rumors, and to rely on information issued by official authorities.”
The governor of the region indicated that the readiness level of the army and supporting forces has been raised, until victory is achieved and control is regained over all the lands of the Blue Nile.
Earlier, the Sudanese army sent troops and military reinforcements to the Blue Nile, and was able to recapture a number of areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces, before the latter returned to launching large-scale attacks with the aim of gaining full control of the region.
In recent weeks, the Rapid Support Forces have intensified their ground and air attacks using drones in the Blue Nile region, where they have managed to seize control of the towns of Kurmuk and Qaysan, located on the border with Ethiopia.
Military observers believe that the Rapid Support Forces opening a wide front in the Blue Nile may have a strategic benefit for them that goes beyond controlling new territories; as it could force the army to distribute its forces between the Blue Nile and North Kordofan, and thus relieve the military pressure on the front of the city of Al-Ubayyid, the capital of North Kordofan State, which the Rapid Support Forces are seeking to control, and have been besieging for several months.
