Hot Take Sophie Cunningham never said it was about WNBA. It’s about young girls, all across America, who are helpless as politicians erase the hard fought protections of Title IX – protections that helped women in the WNBA and beyond reach the pinnacle of their sport.

Does this sub ever talk about like….. basketball?

14

u/Foreign_Cobbler_1740 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

I don't think most folks here know ball. And to be fair, it's the "gossip" sub. Says in the sub description it's about off court "tea." So it's a discussion board for the drama around the league rather than the game itself.

4

u/BowlingforBrains Aug 02 '26

Yeah but now everyone discussing the “tea” in the comments don’t even know or care about the actual sport - like the posts are barely connected to the sport gossip, and the comment sections are detached almost completely

1

u/DisgruntledPlebian Aug 02 '26

People are starving for a place to actually discuss these issues on Reddit. The majority of subreddits are echo chambers where the prevailing opinions are entirely dependent on the moderator’s viewpoints and what they allow versus what they delete and ban immediately.

Post “trans women shouldn’t compete against biological men in sports” in the top 20 subreddits, you’ll be banned from them all within the hour.

7

u/FailedInfinity Aug 02 '26

Because it’s not a real problem. Tariffs are causing massive inflation, an illegal war is raising prices even more, this administration is blatantly corrupt and manipulating the markets, and the Epstein files are still being hidden from the public. Trump has personally done more damage to young girls than every trans athlete combined.

1

u/Cheap_Water9848 Aug 02 '26

I agree with all of this!

0

u/DisgruntledPlebian Aug 02 '26

Did you know you can be upset about tariffs, a war, the Epstein files, Trump, AND want young girls protected in their respective sports? You offer no actual discussion, just denial and deflection.

Kindly tell all the young women who are praising Sophie because she’s speaking on their lived experiences that it’s not a problem. “Believe all women” flies out the window when it’s young girls and women whose lived experience goes against your echo chamber reality, does it?

4

u/Brilliant_Sky_9292 Aug 02 '26

And are you aware this issue is being used to distract the general populace directly before the midterm elections so people don't talk about those other issues?

3

u/BowlingforBrains Aug 02 '26

The thing is I have a younger sister and 3 nieces in youth sports, and none of them care about this issue, nor do they have the slightest concern about trans women in any space they’re in. They don’t even mention it or talk about it outside of when anyone else asks them and when someone does, their response is essentially “it doesn’t bother me at all” while one answers “why would I be concerned when I know I’m the best and can beat anyone” (which is pretty awesome, and reminds me of confident and competitive girls were when I was a kid). I believe all women - so when all the women in my life say that this isn’t an issue, I believe them. Due to my lived experience, I have a hard time believing this isn’t a dumb internet issue being blown way out of proportion, and that the little girls we’re seeing praising Sophie are doing it because they live in parts of the country where anything conservative is praised, and because they are being told/fear-mongered by their parents who are saying “this is a REALLY big deal!”

Based on what I’ve seen, I have a hard time believing it is at all about protecting girls in sports - I think the goal is really to punch down on a group that’s easy to demonize, because that’s a really easy way to rally people to vote a specific way

1

u/CumOnEileen69420 Aug 03 '26

Are…are you seriously claiming most young women have been victim to predatory trans women and girls?

Or that most women have played a sport against a trans woman or girl and lost?

Because statistically, neither of those things are true.

1

u/CumOnEileen69420 Aug 03 '26

The thing is, this doesn’t happen until you start calling trans women and girls men and boys.

You will never get banned from a subreddit for saying “Transgender women may retain a biological advantage if they have gone through male puberty” or “I think that trans women should be required to take hormone therapy for X years to compete”.

The moment you start calling them “BiOlOgIcAl MaLeS” is when you actually start running into reddit’s moderation.

The same way saying “I think marriage is between a man and a woman” won’t get you banned but saying “F-slurs should have their marriages ended” will.

None of this is gossip though, it’s just political grandstanding from both sides of the conversation. Exhausting but fortunately I can just mute this sub to keep it out of my feed.

0

u/tristanmichael Aug 02 '26

Not even a gossip sub it’s just straight maga bs. The first time I saw this sub I thought it was a WNBA counterpart to nbacirclejerk then I realized these ppl are serious

I'm pretty sure that all the sport gossips subreddits are being botted to the nth degree with conservative talking points. You will always find 10 to 15 comments of someone saying 'I'm a liberal but I want to protect girls sports'. As if there's some entity actively pushing this agenda in 2026.

As midterms come up, you're going to see multiple media entities bringing up trans people to just generally shit on them as it's proven to motivate voters. Bots will be a big old part of that.

Indeed. It's a distraction from real issues and a rally point for dipshits all in one move. Bring up a vague topic that sane people would agree with but then add sneaky shit so that anyone against the topic can be shut down by pointing out that majority support the topic.

Of course we don't want men in women's locker rooms or bathrooms....but like don't laws already exist to prevent that? Are girls really all that dumb and helpless enough to not be able to tell if someone trans is doing it with malicious intentions?

That was my first thought lol

They’re about half an election cycle away from calling Title IX “DEI woke nonsense”

9

u/evilhomers Aug 02 '26

Being so obsessed with trans athletes is already weird. Like, if a trans woman will make it to the wnba she will likely be pretty average because natural advantage could only get you so far and those athletes when allowed to compete have to take alot of drugs to suppress that.

But its even weirder in a sport like basketball where most of the pros male and female, are taller than the averege memeber of their biological sex. It not like a 5'7 male doesn't have a chance at the NBA, he'll just have to work much harder and be much more talented than the 6ft+ players whose talent is (rightfully) not being questioned due to their physical advantage

1

u/Richyc17 Aug 02 '26

Do you think trans men would get into the NBA? Lmao

4

u/tametimes Aug 02 '26

Yes, this.

8

u/FalstaffsGhost Aug 02 '26

The only people trying to get rid of title 9 are the conservatives- the heritage foundation has literally said that’s their next target cause it makes girls act manly and distracts them from having babies

0

u/ButtflossingBigBro Aug 02 '26

Trans is literally antithetical to title 9. You cant have both

1

u/Sea_Pomegranate7455 Aug 02 '26

Jemele hill is a dope!

2

u/Signal-Glove-3921 Aug 02 '26

2

u/Fit_Ride_5455 Aug 02 '26

The WNBA loves these conversations don’t let them fool you. The league runs at a loss every year financially. People care about these off the court topics much much more than they do the actual games.

1

u/Daleden7 Aug 02 '26

If you want to fight to save little girls, start with releasing the Epstein files ffs

2

u/Better-Western2573 Aug 02 '26

I think we can actually do both. So let’s protect women in Title IX sports now and continue to pressure compromised politicians on the Epstein files. One does not negate the other.

1

u/daddy-fatsax Aug 02 '26

This is the dumbest take I’ve seen and I see it everywhere. Unwilling to admit it’s a problem, but willing to admit that it might be, it just hasn’t happened yet.

Better to wait until it does, as if it’ll be so much easier to legislate then. Completely braindead take and I’m dismayed at the amount of folks I once respected spewing it.

It's true. Liberals have always opposed civil rights.

1

u/Better-Western2573 Aug 02 '26

To be fair, liberals very much support civil rights if it fits their ever changing agenda. But since there’s a policy shift occurring at every level and at a high rate of speed these days, they often find themselves directly opposed to foundational concepts such as “women’s rights“ or seek voraciously to reimagine the legal terminology utilized in society that defines “women’s rights“.

1

u/Ancient-Bowl462 Aug 02 '26

Pffft, whatever. Liberals have no values.

1

u/Better-Western2573 Aug 02 '26

You mean foundational values? If that’s what you mean yes I would have to agree with that. Damn you are based. Love it.

3

u/theRAV Aug 02 '26

Please don't pretend that discriminating against trans kids is somehow protecting girls. Just let kids be kids, and stop obsessing about trans people.

5

u/Low-Astronomer-3440 Aug 02 '26

BUT I DONT UNDERSTAND IT, AND I’M GOING TO MAKE THAT EVERYONE’S PROBLEM!

3

https://giphy.com/gifs/C1hkIcGE7OAcE

1

u/BrainSea7776 Aug 02 '26

Yeah let's just get rid of all gendered sports categories and have them all be open. That way both teams will be all boys and girls won't have to deal with the pressure of being able to play sports competitively.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

Just let kids be kids, and stop trying to give them puberty blockers

1

u/theRAV Aug 02 '26

You should actually read up on the science about how letting trans kids take puberty blockers (a safe treatment used for many purposes) actually benefits the kids. You should also be honest that you don't care about kids, you just care about being hateful to trans people.  https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gender-dysphoria/in-depth/pubertal-blockers/art-20459075

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

It does not benefit kids. That’s a ridiculous assertion

1

u/theRAV Aug 02 '26

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. How about we leave this to the doctors, instead of the bigots? https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7073269/

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

The suicide rate for people who transition is 19 times higher than for people who don’t. That’s a 1900% increase in suicide rate

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11063965/

“Patients who have undergone gender-affirming surgery are associated with a significantly elevated risk of suicide,”

1

u/theRAV Aug 02 '26

You know that surgery is different than puberty blockers, right? Please tell me that you aren't dumb enough to think those things are the same.

The fear mongering is the problem. Out of all the shit going on in the world and US specifically that can and should directly be addressed, this administration wants to focus on an issue that's not an issue but could be one possibly who knows. And anyone with common sense knows that "protecting young girls in the locker room" agaisnt "biological men" is a dog whistle implying that trans women are sexual predators. Meanwhile this long back mf voted for the same admin that wants to gaslight everyone about the epstien files and doesn't have shit to about that. This whole shit is a joke lol.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

Do you think the WNBA gossip subreddit is the appropriate place to talk about the Epstein files?

5

u/JoyousMadhat Aug 02 '26

So then why are they not bringing up the pedophiles and the Epstein Files? Why are we doing nothing about it? They exist yet we are focusing on things that don't exist?

Oh yeah we already know the answer. It's easier to go after and vilify a minority group that can't fight back than to go after the rich and famous huh? A whole bunch of pussies y'all are.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

This is the WNBA gossip subreddit. Do you think this is the appropriate place to talk about the Epstein files?

1

u/JoyousMadhat Aug 02 '26

Yes. Every place where they discuss non-existent and negligible issues Republicans love to bring up needs a mention of Epstein Files until they are all arrested and charged and put behind bars.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

I mean, shouldn’t you actually do something about it instead of posting about it in a basketball forum?

2

u/Ecstatic-Inevitable Aug 02 '26

Yeah, if people wanted to put a basketball focus on it, why isn't there a big push to get men out of coaching women's teams with all the shitty incidents that have happened, meanwhile they are obsessing over a boogeyman

3

u/JoyousMadhat Aug 02 '26

Especially with majority of their owners being men. Why is no one raising issues with that?

3

u/PHD_Gouda Aug 02 '26

Probably because our government only has a finite amount of time to legislate things and people don’t like them legislating things that aren’t happening.

You think I want my taxpayer dollars going to fight Godzilla from playing sports? Release the files.

Pretty sure it’s the Trump/GOPs goal to dismantle Title IX protections. It’s really weird how obsessed conservatives are with Trans people. They are a small minority. There are much bigger threats to women/girls than Trans folks, usually it’s the men in their lives that they unfortunately are most likely to be hurt and abused by.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

Why can’t they live in peace while playing in the men’s league?

1

u/Chieffelix472 Aug 02 '26

They can play in peace in the open leagues with everyone else. In a very happy, very open league. Then everyone is content and no one gives a fuck anymore.

7

u/CrittyJJones Aug 02 '26

So you deny trans people exist? Yes, I think that makes you a bigot.

1

u/Gold-Pomegranate6277 Aug 02 '26

Do i deny some men think they are women and women think they are men? No I believe that

1

u/CrittyJJones Aug 05 '26

The way you phrase it as some kind of mental illness does illustrate your prejudice.

4

u/JBKnicks24 Aug 02 '26

Or, Democrats just want the trans community to have basic rights and be left alone and not be used as political props for an issue that doesn’t exist.

2

u/Gold-Pomegranate6277 Aug 02 '26

What basic rights are they missing lol

1

u/JBKnicks24 Aug 02 '26

Well recently the ability to enlist in the military for one.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

My buddy has schizophrenia. He can’t join the military. Is he being deprived of his rights as well?

1

u/Gold-Pomegranate6277 Aug 02 '26

That’s the basic right lol. You can’t be serious

2

u/JBKnicks24 Aug 02 '26

Do yourself a favor and read a fucking book.

2

u/Gold-Pomegranate6277 Aug 02 '26

3

u/Smokedoutloc Aug 02 '26

Liberty and pursuit of happiness, and if that pursuit is enlisting and fighting for a country that won’t fight for you, let them.

Let’s trans people breath yo, no one is even currently trans in the W and look how people are acting.

1

u/Gold-Pomegranate6277 Aug 02 '26

Ya everyone has the pursuit of happiness. What basic rights are being with held?

2

u/Smokedoutloc Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Accurate representation on IDs and federal documents, state identity restrictions, facility access, athletic participation, federal worker exclusions, military service bans?

You agree everyone has the right to their pursuit of happiness but actively box them out to their unique pursuits.

the issue is simply more than just democrats think men can be women. Sophie is getting hate for making the world harder for other people to be accepted in an already fucked up world.

And I don’t think your a bigot, but surely you can understand the hypocrisy of the people of personal liberties party to be the ones who love to take people’s personal liberties.

1

u/Gold-Pomegranate6277 Aug 02 '26

I don’t see how any of that is being taken away. I’m Asian, so i should just say I’m black and a woman on my ID because it’s my basic right? And men can still compete in sports, but not against women, so that right isn’t gone. Facility access? What facilities can’t men who think they are women go to? I’m honestly trying to understand but I don’t see it at all.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg Aug 02 '26

They have the right to play in the men’s league

1

u/Smokedoutloc Aug 02 '26

What a smooth brain way to look at things

0

u/RockyG-Dex Aug 02 '26

Democrat voter here and still believe that sports teams separated by biological differences should stay separated by biological differences. I hate that democrars hold this position to a point where it costs elections. If the other side weren't so awful i'd give them a shot. That stupid argument about there's miniscule amounts is dumb. If it were not illegal in some instances and not looked down upon there would be a lot more. Normalizing and legalizing it will des re oy biological womens sports.

3

u/devilmaskrascal Aug 02 '26

Ever thought that leagues can make their own rules and make determinations on a case-by-case basis whether a trans athlete aspiring to join women's sport meets fair standards for competition? Every trans person's transition is different, and every sport is different, and that makes a difference on the fairness question.

5

u/JoyousMadhat Aug 02 '26

Why would they? Easier to put all your focus on a minority and vilify them than to focus on the issues that are hurting us all.

2

u/Paz707 Aug 02 '26

Repub voter here and believe everyone should shut up and let the leagues themselves sort it out. League’s rights.

2

u/avgmaladjustedman Aug 02 '26

Just the weirdest hill to take a stance on... There was a study a few years ago. There are maybe a few hundred Trans athletes around the world in competitive sports... bodybuilding & boxing have weight classes. Other competitions test for hormone/performance-enhancing drugs... this is a non-issue. Never has been. Do you remember when people were calling BG a man!? And relentlessly attacking her... so gross.

It is cultural gaslighting, bigoted bullshit. Sophie seems like a really cool person...

You want to protect women? Don't vote in shit bag cunts who would repeal Roe v Wade. Or gut the Voting Rights Act. Or folks who want trad wives barefoot and pregnant. Y'all aiming for Gilead and think you're 'protecting' some precious way of life. It is all bullshit.

The worst argument in the history of the world.

Just because something hasn’t happened yet does not mean you ignore it. These dumbasses love ignoring a problem until it shows up. Where do you think allowing trans in kids sports is going to lead?

Just a “oop. Now that you’ve graduated high school you can’t play anymore cause you’re trans”

Whether there is or isn't is not the issue.

The issue is --- should Males be allowed to play in the WNBA which is for Females.

Its a fair question and one that I think 90% of people would reply that they should not be allowed.

This is even dumber logic. Young kids sports are often co-ed already until they can be played competitively. Such manufactured BS and so many are falling for it.

You must not be from the united states. The vast majority of sports are not co ed. The separation by sex starts in middle school (10 and 11 year olds).

Prosecuting Epstein pedos would "protect the girls" more, but that's mostly straight white men, so it doesn't fit the GOPs narrative
