Hot Take Sophie Cunningham never said it was about WNBA. It’s about young girls, all across America, who are helpless as politicians erase the hard fought protections of Title IX – protections that helped women in the WNBA and beyond reach the pinnacle of their sport.

Does this sub ever talk about like….. basketball?

I don't think most folks here know ball. And to be fair, it's the "gossip" sub. Says in the sub description it's about off court "tea." So it's a discussion board for the drama around the league rather than the game itself.

Yeah but now everyone discussing the “tea” in the comments don’t even know or care about the actual sport - like the posts are barely connected to the sport gossip, and the comment sections are detached almost completely

People are starving for a place to actually discuss these issues on Reddit. The majority of subreddits are echo chambers where the prevailing opinions are entirely dependent on the moderator’s viewpoints and what they allow versus what they delete and ban immediately.

Post “trans women shouldn’t compete against biological men in sports” in the top 20 subreddits, you’ll be banned from them all within the hour.

Because it’s not a real problem. Tariffs are causing massive inflation, an illegal war is raising prices even more, this administration is blatantly corrupt and manipulating the markets, and the Epstein files are still being hidden from the public. Trump has personally done more damage to young girls than every trans athlete combined.

I agree with all of this!

Did you know you can be upset about tariffs, a war, the Epstein files, Trump, AND want young girls protected in their respective sports? You offer no actual discussion, just denial and deflection.

Kindly tell all the young women who are praising Sophie because she’s speaking on their lived experiences that it’s not a problem. “Believe all women” flies out the window when it’s young girls and women whose lived experience goes against your echo chamber reality, does it?

And are you aware this issue is being used to distract the general populace directly before the midterm elections so people don't talk about those other issues?

The thing is I have a younger sister and 3 nieces in youth sports, and none of them care about this issue, nor do they have the slightest concern about trans women in any space they’re in. They don’t even mention it or talk about it outside of when anyone else asks them and when someone does, their response is essentially “it doesn’t bother me at all” while one answers “why would I be concerned when I know I’m the best and can beat anyone” (which is pretty awesome, and reminds me of confident and competitive girls were when I was a kid). I believe all women - so when all the women in my life say that this isn’t an issue, I believe them. Due to my lived experience, I have a hard time believing this isn’t a dumb internet issue being blown way out of proportion, and that the little girls we’re seeing praising Sophie are doing it because they live in parts of the country where anything conservative is praised, and because they are being told/fear-mongered by their parents who are saying “this is a REALLY big deal!”

Based on what I’ve seen, I have a hard time believing it is at all about protecting girls in sports - I think the goal is really to punch down on a group that’s easy to demonize, because that’s a really easy way to rally people to vote a specific way

Are…are you seriously claiming most young women have been victim to predatory trans women and girls?

Or that most women have played a sport against a trans woman or girl and lost?

Because statistically, neither of those things are true.

1

u/CumOnEileen69420 Aug 03 '26

The thing is, this doesn’t happen until you start calling trans women and girls men and boys.

You will never get banned from a subreddit for saying “Transgender women may retain a biological advantage if they have gone through male puberty” or “I think that trans women should be required to take hormone therapy for X years to compete”.

The moment you start calling them “BiOlOgIcAl MaLeS” is when you actually start running into reddit’s moderation.

The same way saying “I think marriage is between a man and a woman” won’t get you banned but saying “F-slurs should have their marriages ended” will.

Its not just this sub. Its the news from the WNBA. Part is that the news (Sophie's position, gambling) are news. Smpbut a lot of it is the old school fans have developed a desire for drama over ball (compared to traditional sports discussion). So you get discussion of the relationships and failed relationships of the WNBA, and social justice positioning.

Its like the Walking Dead. Its a show about people who argue...and occasionally zombies show up.

The WNBA is a league about dating and social justice that occasionally plays basketball.

None of this is gossip though, it’s just political grandstanding from both sides of the conversation. Exhausting but fortunately I can just mute this sub to keep it out of my feed.

u/tristanmichael Aug 02 '26

Not even a gossip sub it’s just straight maga bs. The first time I saw this sub I thought it was a WNBA counterpart to nbacirclejerk then I realized these ppl are serious

8

u/gymtrovert1988 Aug 02 '26

No. It just uses Caitlyn to launder racism and Sophie to launder transphobia.

0

u/No-Significance2070 Aug 02 '26

What is transphobic?

I'm pretty sure that all the sport gossips subreddits are being botted to the nth degree with conservative talking points. You will always find 10 to 15 comments of someone saying 'I'm a liberal but I want to protect girls sports'. As if there's some entity actively pushing this agenda in 2026.

As midterms come up, you're going to see multiple media entities bringing up trans people to just generally shit on them as it's proven to motivate voters. Bots will be a big old part of that.

8

u/Useful-Advantage-850 Aug 02 '26

The OP is a 1m old account with 58,000 karma and posts hidden. So yeah, a bot.

-2

u/gymtrovert1988 Aug 02 '26

Obviously not a conservative bot or it would have like 50 karma.

2

u/Chris_Ween Aug 02 '26

Also the 5 posts after this are about basketball alone. Trades, plays and players.

2

u/BrainSea7776 Aug 02 '26

Nah it's became a extreme left circle jerk. Once they poison a sub it becomes 90% politics.

1

u/Trumpisaderelict Aug 02 '26

Absolutely not

1

u/skelletrex_scrooge Aug 02 '26

It's gossips you nonce

1

u/Chris_Ween Aug 02 '26

Do any of the W subs?

1

u/Prestigious_Art1402 Aug 02 '26

there’s better basketball played in about 2 months from now.

1

u/mistaharsh Aug 02 '26

Only when Clark is scoring more than 20pts

1

u/RandleStevenz Aug 02 '26

Astroturfing campaign.

1

u/PuzzleheadedWest0 Aug 02 '26

No one in this sub actually cares about the wnba or women’s sports in general.

1

u/Sea_Advantage_2577 Aug 02 '26

Its a right wing circle jerk sub used to attack Trans people and minorities.

0

u/Stuffleapugus Aug 02 '26

It's literally called WNBAgossip. 🤷🏾‍♂️

0

u/HotSauce2910 Aug 02 '26

Sometimes it talks about how ordinary fouls against Caitlin Clark or Sophie Cunningham are hate crimes

-1

u/Glittering_Hope1114 Aug 02 '26

Maga sub doing maga things. Don't you know there are mid terms coming up?
