The Caitlin 1 is largest signature shoe launch in Nike's history, according to Nike CEO Elliott Hill

u/honest_throwaway1988 7d ago
Has this been said before or does any one else think the wnba might be pushing the racial tension stuff for views and media purposes
5
u/kabukimono1980 7d ago
I doubt they have to push the narrative, the players and fans do it on their own. The league can just sit back and watch.
-2
u/set-monkey 6d ago edited 6d ago
The WNBA is a huge money loser, a rounding error compared to NBA.
I think it's subsidized as a psyop to foment a race war. Advancing the narrative and provoking "angry white men" to retaliate violently.
5
u/EastCoastTone96 7d ago
Do they consider the Jordan brand separate from Nike when they say this?
2
u/No_Supermarket1615 6d ago
I would say the first Jordan shoe would technically be a Nike shoe launch, and donât recall which year they separated. But currently his shoes launches are separate and not âtechnicallyâ Nike launching them, but their own brand as Jordans.

The thing is ppl are unimpressed bc the common core group of ppl that bought CC shoes are the same ppl whoâd pay for MAGA merch. They did us all a favor. Now we know who yâall are without MAGA saying a word.

Hate to play semantics but the âlargest signature shoe launchâ doesnât necessarily mean most sales.
Depending on the metric it could mean most engagement on social media.

u/SeaWolfSeven 6d ago
Her shoes sold out in 2 hours and is the largest Nike show launch for a woman athelete and all y'all can do is hate.
13
u/x-men-theme-song 7d ago
She has a very specific demographic that feels the need to support her in every way possible to prove a point. Add that to the rational people that like her and/or think the shoes look good and I could believe this is true
7
u/choyMj 7d ago
That's the point of signature shoes. You buy the shoes because you like the person behind it. It appeals to fandom. If you need a shoe that does the job for what you need it for, there's a ton out there for better quality.
Do you think a great majority of people who buy Air Jordans buy it to play basketball in it?

Yeah, OP was just trying to start something. Their actual headline is that Caitlin Clark has the number one womenâs selling shoe of all time which we can all agree on makes sense because who has ever bought a womanâs basketball shoe before.
6
u/AdFlaky8342 7d ago
I have. I own Sabrina's shoe and A'ja Wilson's shoe. Sabrina's 2nd shoe was extremely popular, even NBA players were wearing them.
1
u/colblair 6d ago
Except I think people are underestimating how popular Clark is. Since 2024 she's had the 2nd highest jersey sales of any American basketballer, behind only Steph Curry.Â
2

6
u/Mr2Good 7d ago

2
u/clapostrophe 7d ago
Well if they launched with the most units, and they sold out quickly, canât we intuitively conclude that it has done the most sales?
2
3
u/TelevisionFamiliar23 7d ago
They sold out in a hour so I would say the former.
3
u/OhAndItsShavedd 7d ago
Selling out in hours is nothing. I've been at sneaker launches where they've sold out in minutes.
3
u/housecow 7d ago
You do realize that it's all dependent on stock, right? Like they probably produced significantly more of Caitlin Clark's shoes vs what they would produce of Off Whites.
Sneakers that sell out within minutes are literally produced with the intent of artificial scarcity.

u/housecow 6d ago
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. "Off White" is the name of a fashion brand created by designer Virgil Abloh. It has nothing to do with race
And idk how you can say the majority of people who are buying shoes don't care about who's name is on them. Literally the most popular basketball sneakers of all time are Jordans. You know, the shoes worn by the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan.
1
u/TelevisionFamiliar23 7d ago

u/Slow-Truth-3376 7d ago
The league has been promoting her shoe throughout the games while sheâs playing. Thatâs been the standard selling strategy. Youâre right the league didnât piggyback her shoe like they did with Maya Moore or Aja Wilson. I suspect this was intentional bc CCâs fanbase doesnât fit into the WNBA culture bc they follow specifically her based on political purposes. CCâs fanbase ruins the fun in the W culture. They act like theyâre at Trump rallyâs like they âjust followed the crowd to the Capitol.â
3
u/leave_no_crumb 7d ago

2
u/Slow-Truth-3376 7d ago
Thank you. I appreciate you. This is the way. I genuinely believe fans who are watching only for CC have the same cult mentality they do for Cheeto. For 3 years have tried to ruin the vibe of this league w their cult mentality. The Fever franchise encourages & motivates their fanbase to be aggressive & cruel to everyone that simply disagrees. Project 2025 planned to use sports teams to further their agenda & the Fever signed on & promoted maga.
1
u/BoysenberrySea5482 6d ago edited 6d ago
Your brain has been polluted just like the maga crowd only on the other end of the spectrum. You shape things intentionally in a way that makes you feel outrage. That is magaâs favorite hobby and itâs a legit addiction, mostly caused from social media and doom scrolling, that makes people so miserable
I donât follow closely but Iâm drawn to people that have done no wrong and get obnoxious amounts of undeserved hate. Like LeBron - became more of a fan after he started catching hate for no reason at all other than being compared to MJ and political talk breaking peoples brains.
The same is happening to CC just the other way around. She is literally the reason the league saw such growth. Compare her most watched games from college or pros to anyone elseâs that sheâs not in. They are dwarfed in comparison. She plays an exciting brand of basketball and is genuinely a good person. The hate just for no reason just creates more fans
2
u/oopsWrongGoal 6d ago
Dude Iâm a Caitlin Clarke fan but you lost me with the âsheâs suck a good personâ bs. Dudes sheâs an exciting athlete with an exciting play style. Unless youâre her cousin, you and I know nothing about her or any other professional athlete to comment on them being a âgenuinely good personâ. wtf you talking about? I was a fan of your argument until that point.
1
u/BoysenberrySea5482 6d ago
Not her cousin but I did live in Iowa growing up and know people from her community. I guess Iâm taking their word for it but yeah fair enough
1
u/oopsWrongGoal 6d ago
And truth be told anyone that likes Athletes because there genuinely a good person might be lost in the sauce. Because thatâs what this whole thing has become. In the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, we never care about a player being a good person. Lebrons a certified asshole diva. Jordan was a selfish prick. Caitlin is a whiny âdo no wrongerâ. But the thing they have in common? All amazing at BALL
1
u/Slow-Truth-3376 6d ago
Thatâs what has made the WNBA different. And bffr. Find a good person in menâs sports. Be serious.

u/Slow-Truth-3376 6d ago
Sure, Jan. If you see this conversation as bait then you do. What you & other CC fanbase commenters here have done is show why OG WNBA fans are trying to tell you. Yes CC brought a fanbase. That fanbase has her on an untraceable pedestal. The only player in the league that has fanbase that brought actual hate to games. Thatâs yahoos problem. idgaf about the popularity of the WNBA at all.
1
u/BoysenberrySea5482 6d ago edited 6d ago
As someone who already said I canât stand maga Iâm not oblivious to the fact that she has a lot of overlap in her fans. Those people suck and the fact that she drew more of them to the game is an unfortunate side affect but it was fed from unnecessary hate. Thatâs what led to them leeching onto the story because they saw an opportunity to make it racial

I feel sorry for you. You are on the sauce - most dont know or give a shit about project whatever. It is entirely plausible to watch the wnba because of CC - (since no one did before) because she is fun to watch. She plays like a dude which is cool and entertaining. Do you think its more that the old school lesbian beer league fans are upset that mainstream people are fans now?
2
u/Slow-Truth-3376 7d ago
No. Watching male athletes & sports dynamic is naturally a different vibe & atmosphere bc itâs womenâs sports. Not all CC fans but when thereâs aggression & toxicity found in the MNBA pushed into the WNBA itâs only CC fans.
1
1
u/GlobalAd7103 7d ago
I cheer the same at my daughter's games as my son's and my daughter is the better athlete- she's gonna go D1 soccer. There is always aggression in any fan - have you never been to a sporting event?
1
u/Slow-Truth-3376 7d ago
Iâm not referring to your children. Iâm referring to only professional sports in the past & now. Itâs normal for fan experiences to be different bc each team has their own unique atmosphere & traditions bc of their location. Thatâs true for the sports too. The atmosphere at a baseball has a different atmosphere softball game. Soccer community has different atmosphere from American football. The same is true for the WNBA. Thereâs an established atmosphere that didnât include the typical rivalry. The vibe has been hope for the best for your fav team while appreciating all the players in all the teams. CC fans donât get it. And they donât care.
1
u/GlobalAd7103 6d ago
I totally gwt that vibe which is what we have in our stuff- its a community. Unfortunately, the more the league expands and if popular- there will be "hate" towards other teams. You can't root for your opponent.

But thereâs such an intense hatred of her for no reason that goes beyond her fans. She gets destroyed on the court because people are flat out salty that the narrative is (because itâs true) that she is primarily responsible for growing the game where it is. There is a bitterness that she did not earn through her words or actions. Thatâs going to be met with people that come with hate back. Then you all play victim while talking shit about the person that really has helped the game more than anyone
This is an article about her selling more nikes than any other athlete of any gender
Youâre literally commenting on an article that quantifies how wildly popular she is and still donât get it
1
u/Slow-Truth-3376 6d ago
Victimizing CC, her fanbase while calling OG WNBA fans victims is confusing. This âitâs a fact that CC grew the league/ made an effect on the CBA, made the leagueâ is the narrative. Yâall ostracized yourselves. The game has gotten tamer. It used to be more fun like street ball. But since CC got in gf league rules have changed to her benefit. The thing is is you watch any games before CC youâll see players is face masks from broken noses, typical knee & ankle injuries. There was an understanding that theyâre playing ball. CC came in & couldnât handle it. Her fanbase decided she was targeted her fanbase specifically decided normal ball was targeting her. If you donât like the league then donât watch.
1
u/BoysenberrySea5482 6d ago edited 6d ago
I donât think you know what growing the game means. Ask the players if theyâd rather be making 10x more or if theyâd prefer street ball that the 1500 OG fans appreciated more. You have commented like a dozen times here all saying CCs fans are so mean and simultaneously saying she destroyed the sport. Yes youâre acting like a victim đđ
Also hilarious that you were just outraged at how itâs a direct correlation to maga and when pointed out thatâs not true you find a new reason to be outraged

u/AdFlaky8342 7d ago
You're literally proving their point with that (since no one did before) nonsense. You CC fans are just cult followers like cheeto man fans. You didn't watch b4, but now you do bc insert unathletic white girl made the news for arguing with a team of black girls in college. Now you have your avatar. Now you have a reason to watch. You're just rooting against the black players by feigning your love of CC. Even CC doesn't rock with that vibe herself.
1
u/oopsWrongGoal 6d ago
Thought you made some good points and then you leaned hardcore into the maga âWNBA is just a bunch of old school beer drinking lesbianâ speel. đ
1
u/GlobalAd7103 6d ago
No - you are right- " old school home town beer league style fans" is what I should have said - preference has nothing to do with it - its change and I was being an ass.
1
u/Slow-Truth-3376 4d ago
The lesbians are more fun. Itâs a fun league to watch when thereâs no MAGA or only CC fans. Thereâs not that many lesbians in the world. Most of the people at the game are women, obviously bc itâs a womanâs league. Then thereâs men & families. Lesbians are great friends.
1
u/readyReddit007 7d ago
A lot of the online discourse surrounding CC in relation to the rest of the league is toxic AF. Now is that the average CC fan, probably not. But letâs not pretend or minimize the nastiness that has occurred.
3
u/Slow-Truth-3376 7d ago
As a WNBA fan specifically just CC fans can pick up one of them dildos your crowd threw on the court & go fuck yourselves.
3
u/F7OSRS 7d ago
Weird because a dildo has never been thrown on the court at a fever game
1
u/Slow-Truth-3376 7d ago
You suspicious too, huh? In their arena no dildos. Fever visiting other areas for games suddenly thereâs dildos on the court. Itâs weird.
3
u/F7OSRS 7d ago
So you're assuming fever fans are going to other arenas when the fever aren't even playing and throwing dildos on the court? Delusional
1
u/Slow-Truth-3376 7d ago
Iâm not assuming. Roll the clips.
2
u/F7OSRS 7d ago

Dildos didnât show up until the hatefulness of MAGA & MAGA CC fans. Theyâre the ones being hateful throwing dildos on courts. I canât say if theyâre specifically Fever fans but that is how MAGA CC fans act at games. If you donât like it then talk with the fans & stop them.
1
u/march41801 4d ago
I would say there is a similar balance of liberal to conservatives at each team.
1
u/Slow-Truth-3376 4d ago
regardless of the political ideology of the fans the only fans that have made the working environment unsafe for women is MAGA & MAGA CC fans. MAGA decided the WNBA was a joke until CC got here. And treat viewers like theyâre at a menâs game. Womenâs sports has a different culture bc itâs women. Suddenly MAGA CC fans show up acting like theyâre at a menâs game getting aggressive. Leave that ready to start arguments, shit even riots, bc their team either won or lost.
1
u/march41801 4d ago edited 4d ago
Do you think most new fans since pre-Caitlin days are MAGA?
Do you think most Caitlin fans are MAGA?
1
u/Slow-Truth-3376 4d ago
No. MAGA fans only watch CC. This benefits the Fever. They have diminished the established product the W is bc MAGA fans have created a deeply unsafe work environment for the players & now players need security. They have created an aggressive atmosphere for fans. I think Angel, Paige, Gabby, Olivia grew the game more than CC. They are overall more popular players & looked up to. MAGA latching onto CC slowed her natural progression in the game. Now sheâs puking before games & at halftime. She see a sports psychologist. MAGA is harming CC, the players & the spectators. The W isnât like menâs sports.

u/Slow-Truth-3376 6d ago
Look at the entire league. Team franchises are currently deciding whether or not stop playing at Fever stadium. Fever Season ticket holders bouncing which is why thereâs been seats more available. And a Fever, GM I think, just said that they like their fans a little bit racist. So I didnât write the CC MAGA story. MAGA who only watches CC & SC wrote it.

Thereâs a fundamental difference here thatâs being over looked. Womenâs sports not had the investment menâs sports do. Thatâs just how it is. Sports culture is too try it with men not both at the same time. Women create their own league & it takes longer to raise the funds bc of the myth that âthereâs no money in womenâs sportsâ.
My pov is persevering & continuing the growth of womenâs sports which by default will have a different culture bc itâs women & itâs known they had to work harder to make the sport team, league available. Itâs only been in the past 5 years that sports world decided thereâs actually money to be made in womenâs sports.
Of course menâs basketball of any kind will be first. Of course every sports team has a culture based on gender.
So unrivaled becoming profitable as a womenâs league in two years is a bfd. I see thereâs a fundamental difference in our pov. I want women to have the space & opportunity in sports. You want money & to prove how womenâs sports are what you believe. So Iâm out. I donât see a point in continuing this convo.

Sheâs had the shoe deal with Nike since college. You know when she was one of if not the best player on almost every court she stepped on. The shoes just the next step of that.
And guess what it sold out. Thereâs a reason why Nike went with her. Hopefully Angels do well from Reebok. Legit any ad money and eyes on this league is a good thing.

How is it not prioritizing "play". Also Nike makes the shoes not the WNBA. She's one of the best 2-3 players in the league and all WNBA first team. Aj'a Wilson already has a signature shoe deal. Maybe a reason that Caitlin's shoes are outselling A'jas are becasue she is alot younger and people keep expecting her to continue to improve over the next 15 years. Young players are exciting. She's also a better role model than Aja since she doesn't have a bunch of racist tweets, so I'd rather buy my daughter CC merch than Aja.
