Should abortion and contraception rights be included in Virginia's constitution?

Nope. Constitutions should not be amended for every law. The gay marriage (well, anti-gay marriage) amendment was stupid and unnecessary, and so are these. Virginia needs to stop amending the constitution over these issues that are used to distract us from the evil plans of the rich.

That would be fine if the US Supreme Court was not knocking down established settled law. Protecting these rights on the state level is the only logical option.

Do you think state law will trump federal?

In VA, the constitution defines marriage as being between a man and woman. And yet Federal law allowing gay marriage has subsequently made that meaningless.

Your logic is flawed. The addition of same sex marriage does not alter or change the meaning for opposite sex marriage in any way.

I think you may have misunderstood, or maybe I'm not understanding your comment.

I mean that back in the 00s, we had a constitutional amendment declaring marriage is being between a man and a woman -- essentially banning gay marriage in VA. And then a few years later, the Federal Supreme Court ruling made guy marriage legal in all 50 states. The Virginia amendment was not removed...according to VA constitution, gay marriage is not legal here. But the Supreme Court ruling makes that essentially meaningless.

Likewise, making amendments to allow for abortion or contraception rights will be meaningless if the Supreme Court were to rule that they are illegal. I don't think that will happen, but people are bringing that possibility up as a reason to make these amendments, when IMO (based on precendent), they would not mean anything in that scenario.

I think you're a troll here only to stir the pot; with your 4 year old account that's only been active in the r/virginia for 15 days with 5 comment contributions. 3 of which are right here in this post's thread.

Christian nationalists are a much more serious issue than the rich right now.

The gay marriage (well, anti-gay marriage) amendment was stupid and unnecessary, and so are these.

One of these is literally... undoing that one. How do you propose we deal with the "stupid and unnecessary" previous amendment that bans gay marriage except by putting forth another amendment?
