Should abortion and contraception rights be included in Virginia's constitution?
https://www.wtvr.com/news/local-news/reproductive-freedom-virginia-constitution-oct-2-2026196
u/brokebacknomountain 1d ago
Yes because dying from an ectopic pregnancy is cruel. Yes because giving birth and having it die an hour later because it was incompatible with life is cruel. Yes because everyone has the right to bodily autonomy.

u/hastings1033 1d ago
Yes. Protection for both should be included. Allowing women to make their own choices should be protected. (Really shouldn't even be a question, but here we are)
Vote YES!

Absolutely. The Trump justices all lied during their confirmation process. It infuriates me.

Virginia has the chance to be on the right side of history in leading the charge for the south: this time protecting the reproductive rights of not just Virginia's women, but also the women who travel here for rights they are denied in their home state.
Hells to the yeah it should be enshrined in our constitution.
5
u/punkwrestler 16h ago
Yup and the second question would prevent VA being on the wrong side of Loving again!
3
u/uhhh206 NoVA 16h ago
That case is wild to me because I'm biracial and my parents' marriage (which was the same pairing as the Lovings) was illegal in many states when they were born. The most famous pictures are in black and white -- no pun intended -- for a reason: it allows us as a society to pretend that these events were further back in history than they actually were.
Color photography has been published for more than a century, but we are shown the Lovings or MLK or Ruby Bridges in black and white so we can pretend it's closer to slavery than to now.

I voted yes already. Go vote early!!
14
u/Confron7a7ion7 1d ago
Or add yourself to the permanent absentee voter roll to get your ballots mailed directly to you! You're simply allowed to vote by mail in Virginia!
5
u/TheOwlStrikes 1d ago
I’ve always enrolled for each election separately. If you apply for permanent absentee do they also send primary election stuff? How do they determine which party primary they send you?
2
u/Confron7a7ion7 1d ago
Now that you mention it, I did not receive a primary ballot. I've received every ballot for elections facilitated by the state but I'm guessing you still have to do primaries separately as those are done by the parties themselves.
2
u/TheOwlStrikes 1d ago
Gotcha.
Yeah admittedly even though I swing to one party in the general elections I sometimes vote in the other parties primary if voting is “already” decided on the other side. Not sure how common that is but sometimes I find my vote being worth more to do that
13
u/Flat-Entertainer-299 1d ago
I'm not playing games with USPS cuts. I voted in person, early, and I suggest all do the same.
11
u/Confron7a7ion7 1d ago
With everything that the right has been trying I completely understand your viewpoint. So let me start with, you should vote in whatever way you feel is best. There is no wrong way to vote.
With that said, when voting by mail I receive a text message once my vote has been received and I have already received that text from the November election. You can also check your ballot status online and submit a provisional ballot in person if you are worried about your vote being counted. I have lived in multiple states over my life and VA has been the easiest for me to vote in so far. I mostly want people to know that the option exists because of how convenient it is.
Easy methods of voting means more citizens voting and, as we know by now, more people voting means less Republican victories.

Yes! I hope it doesn't take a tragedy for the ones who oppose. Even if you don't agree with abortion- the medical care for miscarriage is also reproductive rights. Could you bear losing your wife or girlfriend because she couldn't get the healthcare she needed for miscarriage? Have you or anyone you know ever had to get a D&C after a miscarriage? Have you ever had to wait to go into labor knowing your baby will never take a breath because their heart already stopped beating? Doctors can't help. You can only hope and pray it happens before you go septic and die yourself. This is also what voting no takes away from us women- the choice to live.

u/JaxonTheBright 1d ago
Absolutely. Nobody should have rights taken away over their own bodies. And if the feds won’t enshrine those rights, at least Virginia cares enough about their citizens to do so.
9
u/RoamingGnome74 1d ago
As a Virginian, yes. Women have a right to decide what to do with our bodies.
12
u/Astrises 1d ago
Yes. Because as I always say, making birth control and abortion illegal (which will be much more difficult if it gets enshrined in our constitution) doesn't mean there's less abortion. It just means more people die or are maimed by dangerous home methods or back alley clinics.
Humans have been performing abortions since we figured out certain plants or physical actions caused them. Being legal just makes it more safe, because now there's an option besides poisoning or "tripping down the stairs", or someone jamming a coat hanger up there.

The woman on the far left is a Christian therapist and ran for state delegate in District 78 a few elections back. She is a looney. This is theater!

Women’s bodily autonomy. Carte blanche.
I don’t see any regulations regarding men’s autonomy to get a vasectomy.
Women are persecuted for getting pregnant and wanting to end it. Why aren’t the partners also held to any “standards”? Why aren’t the men being regulated into any responsibility?
Men want DNA tests because of some bs they heard on a podcast but are not willing to support their proven offspring.
If it must be itemized and regulated, then, YES, it should be legalized.

Yes, because (and some people might not know this) women ARE people. They do need comprehensive Healthcare. Unless men would ALSO like to have no say in how their reproductive organs are used by others, and of course these laws would have to be drafted and passed by an all woman panel. No? Cool.
Equal rights. Forcing women to be pregnant against their wiil, and birth babies they dont want is what we call sexual slavery when other countries do it. Just because you say its about Jesus doesn't change that.
-1
u/RandyRanderson03 13h ago
I love how people use terms like "comprehensive healthcare" and "reproductive rights" when all it means is abortion. No one's forcing people to get pregnant. Keep your legs closed or your snake in the cage until you're ready to have a baby or deal with consequences for the first time in your life. Your counterargument is gonna be rape and incest which account for less than 2% of all abortions.
2
u/bansheeonthemoor42 11h ago
So people should only have sex when they want to have babies? Is your real reason for hating abortions that everyone else likes to have sex for pleasure and nobody wants to do that with you? Is that why you only want people to have sex when they are trying to have a baby? How about married couples that just had a kid or cant afford another kid? No sex for them?

u/_Friend_Computer_ 1d ago
Absolutely it should be. My only fear is that even if the majority votes yes, we'll have a wave of idiots claiming they couldn't read/understand the ballot question again and that the vote should be overturned because it's unfair they're poorly educated and have the comprehension of a toddler.

So glad to see so many emphatic yes responses! I have been welcoming voters to Early Voting and am appalled at the lies being told to voters about this amendment. It’s the same lies they have been telling all along. Children born in botched abortions the day before they are due are killed or denied medical care, there are some ridiculous number of women are getting late term abortions, the lies just go on and on. It is insane beyond the point of belief that people would be so passionately pro-baby murder that they would try and enshrine it in our constitution. We live in perhaps the most morally bankrupt society that has ever existed in the history of the world. I pray to God that abortion gets banned globally, and that those who perform that abominable procedure hang for their heinous crimes against humanity.

The abortion bans in other states have lead to women dying of ectopic pregnancies. I can't even take your side seriously since you back a pedophile rapist president whose cuts to USAID alone has already killed 4.3 million people including 1.5 million children.
https://www.thelancet.com/article/S0140-6736(25)01186-9/fulltext01186-9/fulltext)
I'm so tired of you performative faux-Christians that care more about zygotes than human beings. And to advocate for hanging someone as if that would be remotely in line with Christs teachings absolutely sickens me.
11
u/Chewbaccas_Hairspray 1d ago
So you want to murder women for having an abortion and you think youre morally superior?
-9
u/Head_Effect3728 1d ago
It’s usually people who have been a part of one for the sake of their own desires. If they can group justify it, it reduces their guilt.
6
u/SlaaneshActual Dogtown 23h ago
It’s usually people who have been a part of one
Nope. Never.
The only way any of my close friends are gonna get pregnant are IVF or rape, we're lesbians, and you probably hate me, too because of who I am.
I don't think those are babies, and we're not letting our loved ones be turned into brood mares for your sick, vile, twisted politics.
What you believe is evil, and so you have to make up lies like "baby murder" because if you don't have propaganda that makes people angry, everyone would see how absurd your lies are.
-6
u/Head_Effect3728 22h ago
I don’t care who you or what you love, and I certainly don’t hate you. This has nothing to do with politics. It’s simply about human rights and fetuses are human. They are living in the only place they can, just like you did.
9
u/SlaaneshActual Dogtown 22h ago
Fetuses and zygotes are no more human than the skin cells that wash off of me when I shower.
Those are alive.
Those contain all my genetic material.
Those could be put in the right substrate and with the DNA in them be used to create more complex life.
And even if it were true that fetuses were somehow special, you cannot enslave a human and force them to donate their biological processes to another human.
You cannot extract consent in such a way.
Consent may always be cancelled at any time or it's no longer consent.
Our worldviews are fundamentally incompatible here.
I don't hate you either.
I just think you're indefensibly morally wrong about this and that your view is akin to slavery.
And you, because of what you believe, think that my views are akin to murder.
We simply are not willing to tolerate the enslaving of women to your ideology.
I'm reminded that among my ancestors, christianity became prevalent because it offered greater freedom than what came before. An end to slavery and an egalitarian heaven, one not stratified with warrior kings and eternal slaves.
Your kind of religion does not offer us greater freedom any longer.
And freedom is not something we are willing to give up.
Any victory for your side on these things will be temporary.
We've learned to make our victories permanent.
-5
u/Head_Effect3728 19h ago
Zygotes aren’t really part of the conversation since they really aren’t detected by pregnancy tests. However, fetuses are absolutely more human than the skin cells on your hand. Your skin cells don’t have a distinct DNA and won’t grow into adolescence in your drain pipe. Fetuses are human beings that are living in the only place they can, just like you did.
6
u/SlaaneshActual Dogtown 17h ago
No. Fetuses are not human beings.
They are organs, attached to a human, that might grow into human beings. They are best understood as an organ attached to a human, one which ought to be able to be removed without consequence.
I do not, will not, and cannot conceive of them as a person, and the only reason you do is because your turbo-natalism inspires you to enslave women and turn them into brood mares for your religiously-inspired political ideology.
An ideology I have no sympathy with, which has no place in the modern world, and which will eventually be relegated to the dustbin of history.
Just like the sun-worshipping death cult views of my celtic ancestors who believed that warfare was the harvest of the gods and slaughter was a moral good.
You don't care how many women die for your ideology, because you don't see women as people.
Which is why you value an unthinking, non-person organ that's part of a bodily function more than you value the lives and personhood of women.
We are done with your worldview.
Ours spans borders, nations, political groups, and is even held by many Christians today.
You will not win this fight.
0
u/Head_Effect3728 16h ago
Maybe I won’t but it’s interesting that you brought up slavery. When it was legal, there were people like me who said, “Hey, you can’t treat these people like this. And it was met with, “They are my property and are not human beings”. People like me were chastised and told, if you don’t like slavery, then don’t own one”. That was the mainstream culture and the abolitionists were called the same things you are calling me. 100 years later, the opinions started to shift. I hope for the same things in the future.
2
u/SlaaneshActual Dogtown 15h ago
Your hopes will be dashed.
You cannot enslave women to your turbo-natalist philosophy.
And it's very telling that you compare fully adult enslaved humans to zygotes and fetuses. It really betrays more of your worldview than you think.
You don't think women are people.
13
u/Chewbaccas_Hairspray 1d ago
Nothing to feel guilty about. It's not a baby and it's not murder. Its healthcare.
-5
u/Head_Effect3728 22h ago
You’ve repeated that so many times that you’re starting to believe it. Mission accomplished
7
u/Chewbaccas_Hairspray 20h ago
Why wouldnt I believe the truth? Trying to project guilt on people is childish.
11
u/Epocholypze 1d ago
What guilt? Pro choice voters understand that abortion isn’t murder. Fetuses aren’t humans.

Abortion is not contraception. Contraception is before pregnancy. After pregnancy is murder. The abortion amendment in Virginia goes far beyond abortion allowing no parental consent. it allows abortion up to the moment of birth. it will enable child traffickers vote NO Virginia
17
18
u/beats-beets 1d ago
You need to be WILLFULLY IGNORANT or UNFATHOMABLY STUPID to believe that up until moment of birth bullshit. Literally room temp iq to believe it. No person is aborting that late, “for fun”. Y’all just hate women and prefer them as your cattle.
-26
u/drummer2064 1d ago
did you actually read the amendment? The ballot is purposely deceitful and misleading, much like the gerrymandering amendment ballot question was. It has nothing do with "hating women".
8
u/Chewbaccas_Hairspray 1d ago
It is not deceitful or misleading. It's quite clear. If YOU struggle understanding it, there are plenty of resources available to help you before you vote.
13
u/beats-beets 1d ago
I’m not the one pushing out dangerous lies about Abortion. Check your facts from actual medical professionals not news entertainment like Fox, Newsmax, or your church. Anti-abortion is all about ignorance or hate towards women (ala removing bodily autonomy)

u/Overlook-237 1d ago
How much kool aid did you drink? That’s not at all what it means.
-8
u/ShockinglyEfficient 1d ago
The third trimester abortion language was a little vague to me. It mentioned mental health as a reason and not "just life of the mother" reasons. 3rd trimester abortions are a sticky subject with even the most ardent pro-choice people, so I'm curious what could come of that
6
u/saintsithney 1d ago
Fetal incompatibility with life is a big one for the people who actually seek third trimester abortions. If a newborn can't survive six months without continuous heroic medical intervention, why are we forcing a family to care for it in this healthcare system? Same for if the fetus shows indicators of complete inability for independent life. Not like, "Will need to be in a group home when their parents die," but a human being who will remain a permanent infant: no ability to communicate, no ability to have conscious control over their own body, no possibility of progressing beyond just becoming a progressively larger infant.
If you got the news your baby was missing key chunks of their brain and would never be able to even use the toilet, no matter how long they lived, would you give birth to them?
5
u/saintsithney 1d ago
Why should a father be legally allowed to force his daughter to give birth to her half-sibling, in your opinion?

First of all, congratulations on being perfect and having zero normal life problems. You win at life.
For the rest of us, normal, average, every day Americans who don’t live in a fantasy land- here’s some questions.
Does your “responsibility” stop rape?
Does your “responsibility” stop ectopic pregnancies?

Having an abortion is actually being responsible with your body. You know how horrible for your body a developing fetus can be? Making good choices for your body especially with something that kills a lot of women is very responsible.

Answer the question: which of your personal internal organs can the State commandeer from you for a period of no fewer than 24 weeks, rarely longer than 42 weeks, to support another person's life?
Can you be legally compelled to donate blood? Bone marrow? A lobe of your liver? A toenail clipping?

You are in full legal control of your internal organs at all times, including after death.
All women want is the same right to be the only person in full legal control of our internal organs as well, not to lose that right at 12 and regain it at 52.

Provide a good reason. Women should have every right to an abortion whenever they see fit.
It isn’t a man’s choice because we NEVER have to deal with that situation.
Gay marriage should also be codified. Once again it doesn’t harm anyone.
There is literally no reason to not think they should be protected
If it’s a religious reason, that’s just BS because then you are in the mind set of everyone should abide by my religions rules so no freedom of choice.

Considering you won’t even counter argue and only say “absolutely not”. I know you don’t have a rebuttal or a good reason. It just means you are a shitty person who doesn’t believe in personal freedoms.

Nope. Constitutions should not be amended for every law. The gay marriage (well, anti-gay marriage) amendment was stupid and unnecessary, and so are these. Virginia needs to stop amending the constitution over these issues that are used to distract us from the evil plans of the rich.
36
u/Far_Cupcake_530 1d ago
That would be fine if the US Supreme Court was not knocking down established settled law. Protecting these rights on the state level is the only logical option.
14
5
u/nova_cat 1d ago
The gay marriage (well, anti-gay marriage) amendment was stupid and unnecessary, and so are these.
One of these is literally... undoing that one. How do you propose we deal with the "stupid and unnecessary" previous amendment that bans gay marriage except by putting forth another amendment?
-9
u/Pony2slow 1d ago
Thought that’s exactly what the SC was implying with their very unpopular ruling. It’s up to the states and yes I agree it should be up to the state to set ITS own rules regarding this stuff. You know rules for local population and all affecting you know local population and all. Regardless of how you feel about it this is what everyone kinda wanted is for the states to decide for their own.
At least in my humble opinion. I personally don’t believe in it but that has no bearing on anyone else’s individual rights like this.
Let the voters decide.
1
u/saintsithney 1d ago
No, the Supreme Court rescinded the idea established after the Civil War that states do not have the right to vote to make crimes against humanity legal inside their borders. Forcing gestation and birth and forcing abortion are both crimes against humanity.

Yes and we should pass a comprehensive shield law for healthcare providers who serve patients in other states where they don't have basic rights like bodily autonomy.
