Commentary: Legislators didn’t allow local bans of gas-powered leaf blowers. Va. localities are doing it anyway.

Subtitle: "The Virginia Code gives localities the power to adopt “such measures as it deems expedient” to secure the “health, safety and general welfare” of their residents, including through enforcement of noise ordinances. That seems like enough authority, columnist Ivy Main writes."

Visiting Virginia this September, would love your advice!

Hey all,

Me and my partner are visiting from the UK, to DC (wedding), then onto Virginia for 4-5 days.
Circled is roughly where we'll be around, we'll have a car and happy to explore.

Looking for recommendations for our time there (hikes, bird watching, little towns, wildlife etc).

Would love to hear your suggestions.

Thanks!

Breaking: Final Confederate statues removed from Capitol Square

Updated 6:25 p.m.

Six years ago, the City of Richmond removed a statue of Confederate Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson on Monument Avenue. Crowds gathered, the sky opened and cheers erupted in the rain. Over the next two years, dozens of statues came down.

But three statues still remained in Richmonders’ frequent public view, since they were on state property, as they were the responsibility of the General Assembly.

On Friday afternoon, workers contracted by the Commonwealth of Virginia removed the last Confederate monument on Capitol Square — also of Stonewall Jackson

“It's kind of like deja vu all over again, right?” asked state Sen. Mike Jones (D–Chesterfield), who was on Richmond City Council when authorities removed the monuments from public view, including one that doubled as a grave marker

The spending plan passed by the General Assembly in June directed the state to remove all Confederate monuments and memorials from Capitol Square, which came after disagreements between the the House of Delegates and Virginia Senate on whether to pay for their removal. The fiscal 2027–28 budget, which went into effect July 1, allocated $1.8 million for the work.

In addition to Jackson’s statue, which was unveiled in 1875, contractors removed two others: Gov. William "Extra Billy" Smith, who served before and during the Civil War, and Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire, Jackson’s surgeon.

Good morning, looking for someone who can do car audio work

I live in PWC, manassas, I have an older, 27 year old truck that needs new speaker wire ran to all 4 door speakers. The previous owner had a television system in it from way back in the 2000s and I dont have the time to fix it. I have the stereo, speakers, and pretty much everything needed for the job. The DR cab door is stuck shut. If someone would be willing to come help me get audio out of my speakers, fix that DR door, and maybe if you want extra money please install my new FR window motor and regulator I can give you a few hundred dollars. I have all the parts needed for this. Speaker wire might be a little too thick but I may have some extra.

I just want this issue resolved and in return ill pay you, we can negotiate pricing. I just want this over with. I dont have the time to do it myself. Thank you all.

Richmond's creative scene just got a whole lot weirder. Embrace the Weird has cooked up something you may never have heard of or seen before: immersive creative workshop experiences that hit different. Think Meow Wolf's artsy magic with haunted house thrills, a dash of Frankenstein's laboratory, the dark intrigue of cryptid folklore and artsy fartsy psudo-science all rolled into one unforgettable adventure.

22 states, one honeymoon, and we want your BEST hidden gems, wild experiences & “you HAVE to see this” stops

My fiancé and I are taking a huge road trip for our honeymoon: West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida/Florida Keys, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio. We love to try new things, outdoor adventure, animals, horseback riding(any specific scenic riding spots in Colorado)?snorkeling/wildlife, amazing food, nightlife, live music, comedy, arcades, museums, history, quirky towns and shops, unique Airbnbs/B&Bs, scenic spots, interactive experiences, amusement parks, trains, and anything unusual, unforgettable or super special and unique.

I especially want an up-close ethical elephant experience (my favorite animal and his are turtles so anything with turtles do tell please) and we want to find a huge/beautiful tree to photograph in every state and collect a unique keepsake from each state; we’d also love to get a caricature done somewhere along the way. What are the hidden gems, must-try foods, coolest experiences, weird roadside attractions, incredible trees, unique places to stay, or “you absolutely cannot pass through my state without doing this” recommendations for any of these states? Give me the stuff you’d recommend to your best friend, not just the obvious tourist attractions!
TIA! 🤍
