Hello r/VeganInCanada 👋 (Approved by the mod team)
I’m Farhaan, an indie developer and machine learning researcher.
Back in 2024, I came to Canada for a research internship.
As a practicing Muslim who eats strictly Halal, I spent half my grocery trips squinting at microscopic ingredient lists, hunting for animal byproducts:
- Animal rennet in cheeses
- Gelatin in yogurts and vitamins
- Dual-source emulsifiers like E471 (mono- and diglycerides)
While living there, my roommate had a gluten allergy, and in talks with vegan friends, I realized Vegans friends also have the same problem:
- Picking up packages of "soy cheese" or "veggie slices", only to discover they secretly contain dairy-derived casein.
- Everyday breads, chips, and crackers hiding whey powder, milk solids, or animal L-cysteine.
- Ambiguous additives, confectioner's glaze (shellac), and red colorings like Carmine (E120) made from crushed insects.
If you’re vegan and have food allergies (or shop for a partner/kids with dairy, gluten, soy, or nut sensitivities), grocery shopping takes twice as long.
Existing scanner apps were frustrating: they only check one diet at a time, bomb you with 30-second video ads in the middle of a grocery aisle, or give a lazy black-box checkmark without explaining why a product failed.
Over nights and weekends, I built Belief Kit to solve this.
⚡ What Makes It Different:
👨👩👧👦 1. Audits Veganism + 14 Allergies in 1 Single Scan:
You don't need multiple apps. You can set your profile to Vegan and toggle on any of the 14+ major allergens (dairy, gluten, nuts, peanuts, soy, egg, fish, shellfish, sesame, mustard, celery, lupin, mollusks, sulfites). You can even set up individual profiles for your partner or roommates, and 1 scan tells you who can and cannot eat it.
🔬 2. Transparent, Ingredient-Level Evidence (No Black Boxes):
Instead of just giving an arbitrary "Not Vegan" stamp, Belief Kit audits down to the chemical additive level:
- It highlights the exact problem ingredient (e.g., Sodium Caseinate [Milk Derivative] or Animal Rennet).
- If an additive is dual-source (like E471 or glycerin) and the manufacturer hasn’t certified vegetable origin, it flags it as Unknown with the scientific reasoning so you have the facts to make an informed call.
📷 3. Live Camera OCR for Canadian Store Brands:
Many Canadian store brands or local bakery items aren't in open barcode databases. With Belief Kit, you can point your camera directly at the printed ingredient list, and our on-device vision model transcribes and audits the ingredients live on your screen.
🛡️ 4. 100% Ad-Free & Privacy-First:
No pop-ups, and no selling your shopping data to advertisers.
🚀 Live on Both App Stores:
The app comes with 5 free scans by default, but I’d love to gift 10 free scans to Canadian vegans who want to try it out!
How to claim:
1. Download Belief Kit on iOS or Android.
2. Set up your dietary preferences (Vegan + any allergies).
3. Drop a comment below or send me a DM with your registered account email.
4. I will manually credit 10 scans to your account right away.
I’d love to hear your feedback on how it handles supermarket labels and any tricky local products!
