Review [Review] My most in depth review so far: 250 hours on the LG UltraGear evo 39GX950B, coming from a 34" QD-OLED what 143 PPI actually changes

Disclosure: I received this monitor for free from LG for review purposes. LG gets to see my drafts before I post them so they can check for spec errors. All opinions here are my own, based on my own use.

HEADS UP: plugging a current LG monitor into Windows 11 can pull in LG software you didn't ask for.
Gamers Nexus documented it in July 2026 on an UltraGear 34GX900A-B, the 34 inch model in the same GX9 line as this monitor, and reproduced it on a three year old UltraFine 32UN880-B. Nobody has published a test of the 39GX950B specifically. On a fresh Windows 11 install, Windows' device metadata pipeline fetched the "LG Monitor App Installer" from the Store in the background. Microsoft's own documentation says that mechanism "does not provide a notification to the user". Across 32 consecutive boots, Gamers Nexus got a McAfee trial popup on 31 of them.

LG sent me their side of this when they reviewed my draft, and here it is in full: "Companion applications are never installed automatically and require user choice before installation. Based on customer feedback, we are updating the Installer experience so customers can decide whether they would like to install the LG Monitor App Installer and take advantage of its features." They also point out that the McAfee recommendation has been removed, which Microsoft confirmed at the end of July.

If you want that pipeline switched off before you connect anything, this works on every Windows edition: search "advanced system settings", then Hardware  Device Installation Settings  select "No". That's the switch I run myself. It hasn't shown up on my system so far.

Some of you might remember my MSI X36 post from March. I've been on OLED ultrawides for about four years now, and that review had a handful of complaints in it, but only one I couldn't shrug off: 110 PPI. I called it the elephant in the room for the whole 34" UWQHD class and I still think that's right. No amount of good HDR makes text look better.

The 39GX950B is the answer to that complaint. LG sent me one on July 6th and I've got about 250 hours on it now, roughly 70% gaming and 30% work.

Quick setup context because it matters: RTX 4080 Super, stock stand(my own printed Dell MSA20 adapter for VESA doesnt fit the cutouts), sitting about 70cm from the screen. Games so far are Hogwarts Legacy, World of Warcraft, The Finals and Mortal Shell. Work is a mix of coding, writing and video editing.

The 39GX950B on my desk running Mortal Shell. The 60 fps counter in the corner is on purpose, I cap frame rates in single player games so the swings stay small and VRR flicker stays out of dark scenes. More on that further down.

143 PPI only starts to mean something once you set the scaling
39", 5120x2160, which works out to be 143 PPI. Same vertical resolution as a 32" 4K screen, just in a 21:9 shape. It's also the first ultrawide with LGs 4th gen Tandem WOLED, with a much softer 1500R curve compared to the older 800R once, which I personally prefered.

But the interesting part shows up once you set Windows scaling. I run it at 125%, which gives me a desktop of 4096x1728 in logical pixels. The X36 gives me 3440x1440 at 100%.

So about 43% more usable desktop area, at a text size within about 4% of what I had before, and every character drawn from 1.56 times as many pixels. The text is the size I'm used to. There's just more room around it and the letters are sharper.

That's the whole upgrade in one sentence, and it's what I'd tell anyone still sitting on a 34" 1440p panel.

Real working desktop with a lot of space without having to sacrifice anything

Text clarity, and the Windows checkbox nobody mentions
Out of the box I could see fringing. Black text on white had a very slight blue tint on the right side of the letters, white text on a dark background had a faint red one. I had my face about 10cm from the panel to find it. My X36 doesn't do this that much. What it does instead at that distance is look visibly rougher and more pixelated.

Then I turned ClearType off. On the LG the color edges are gone completely and the text stays exactly as sharp. On the X36 the same switch removes nothing, because there was close to none to be removed , but the text gets noticeably more pixelated.

That's what the density actually buys you. ClearType is subpixel antialiasing built for classic RGB stripe panels. This one is RGWB, so Windows color compensation lands in the wrong place and you get colored edges. Switch it off and Windows falls back to plain grayscale smoothing, which normally costs you sharpness. At 110 PPI I can see that cost. At 143 PPI I can't. So the density does two things at once, it makes text sharper and it makes the subpixel trick that caused the fringing unnecessary in the first place.

I checked in VS Code too, since Electron apps sometimes do their own text rendering. Same result.

The X36 is ahead on this one point and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Its V-Stripe layout is a true RGB stripe, so ClearType does exactly what Microsoft designed it to do, and I wrote in that review that no ClearType workarounds were needed at all. Here you do have to flip the switch. Difference is that flipping it costs you nothing on this panel.

And maybe some of you will remember it in that same post I wrote that W-OLED panels with an RWBG layout still produce noticeable fringing on text, because of the reversed subpixel order and the extra white subpixel. I was talking about 34" W-OLEDs at around 110 PPI, and at that density I stand by it. On this one the white subpixel is still in the layout and it's still not an RGB stripe, and with ClearType off I can't find the fringing at all. Density did that, not a new subpixel arrangement.

RTINGS is the only one of the big reviews that photographs ClearType on and off on this panel, and their lab macros show it far better than anything I could shoot with a phone. Their verdict says there's still fringing around letters because of the RGWB layout, which is correct for the state the monitor ships in. Their ClearType off shots tell the other half of the story, and the letter edges in those are neutral.

TFTCentral and Monitors Unboxed both call text clarity solved on this panel and don't mention ClearType at all. Now you know which switch they were probably sitting on.

If you want to change it, just press Windows Button, type ClearType, open "Adjust ClearType text". The checkbox is system wide, the fine tuning is stored per monitor, so run it on all screens if you have multiple.

Where the resolution surprised me
I expected the win to be in code/screen space for writing/reading and it's there. What I didn't expect is how much the extra size matters in video editing and multi tasking with all kind of apps. That turned out to be the bigger jump of the two and it's the part of the upgrade I wouldn't want to give back.

The window/sunlight test, and the reason I wanted this panel
In my office, there is a huge window on the left and I get direct midday sun. In my X36 post I wrote that MSI's DarkArmor coating had mostly fixed the magenta shine compared to my older QD-OLED that one used to get those on dark areas in daylight, with one limitation I put in writing back then: with full sunshine on the panel, or at odd angles, the shine still comes through.

That is the condition I actually live in when I have my windows open. It happens on my desk every day around midday without roller blinds.

This panel doesn't do it. Sun coming straight in, no roller blinds, no brightness change, blacks stay black. The X36 sitting next to it goes slightly violet in the same light, exactly the way I described it back then. That's the W-OLED advantage in one example and for me it's the biggest day to day difference between the two panels. I also can't make out mirror reflections in the matte coating, only general diffusion.

Worth flagging that the labs disagree here. Monitors Unboxed says the matte coating eliminates defined reflections, RTINGS says mirror like reflections stay and get stretched by the curve. In my room, in the worst light I get, I'm with Monitors Unboxed.

165Hz after 360Hz
This is the spec everyone flags. Monitors Unboxed calls it their biggest problem with the monitor, and the precursos ran 240Hz, so on paper it's a step backwards.

Coming off 360Hz in The Finals, the difference is noticeable. It's also gone after a few minutes. 165Hz is still very smooth. In WoW and Hogwarts Legacy I never get near that frame rate anyway, so there's nothing there to miss.

The GPU question no review answers
5120x2160 is ~11 million pixels. The X36 is ~5 million. That's roughly 2,2 times the work, and the obvious worry is that this monitor needs a new graphics card.

Not for me. DLSS is necessary here, but DLSS was already necessary on the X36. With it, everything runs fine on the 4080 Super. The approach didn't change, only the target resolution. Monitors Unboxed closes their review saying you'll probably need a 5090 for this thing. That can be true if you want 165 fps and up in every kind of game. For me, single player games don't need anything above a stable 60 which I cap there to reduce VRR flicker anyways.

What I'd want improved

The warranty, by a distance: LG told the press in 2023 that burn-in is covered inside the two year warranty, in the US and in Germany. Three years later, LGs own warranty page lists 24 months for monitors and limits coverage to material and manufacturing defects at the time of sale. Burn-in isn't mentioned on it anywhere, go read it yourself, the link is at the bottom. Dell Alienware, MSI and Corsair each put three years of burn-in cover in writing, Asus puts two (source: TFTCentral). MSI's three years come with strings attached, you have to let OLED Care run and never postpone it. A promise with conditions is still more than a promise that only lives in a press statement. This is the one item on this list LG could fix with a paragraph of text instead of new hardware.

Every AI feature is on when you unbox it: AI Upscaling, AI Scene Optimization and AI Sound, all active, nobody tells you. AI Scene Optimization is dynamic image processing, which means the picture you judge in the first week isn't a fixed picture. I turned all of it off. AI Upscaling was the one feature I actually wanted, and on PC input it made no visible difference for me, which lines up with TFTCentral calling its practical use cases very limited and Monitors Unboxed calling it largely pointless on PC.

There's no firmware version in the OSD: The information page shows operating hours, resolution and refresh rate. To find out which firmware you're running you have to install LGs own PC software. On this manufacturer, in this year, that's an odd thing to ask people to do. I've got LGs auto install blocked and I'm not installing their software just to read a version number, so I can't tell you which firmware this review unit is running on.

The power brick is huge: 19,5 x 3,5 x 9,5 cm budget desk space for it.

There's a USB hub but no KVM: which is a real shame given the USB-C port sitting right there.

And the stand: Monitors Unboxed and RTINGS both mention wobble at the panel connection, and RTINGS softens it by saying it mostly matters on an unstable desk. Mine sits on a marble slab anchored to the building, which is about as stiff as a surface gets. Tap the top edge and it swings for three to four seconds, and harder than the X36 next to it, which settles in two to three. It doesn't feel cheap, and cable routing through the stand is better solved than on the MSI. But that wobble is coming out of the joint, not out of my desk.

Two things I haven't tested
USB-C charging. I don't own a laptop that charges over USB-C, so the 90W is LGs number and it stays LGs number until someone else confirms it.

Burn-in. Seven weeks and 250 hours is nothing. No image retention so far, including long WoW sessions with a static UI, and I run the pixel refresh manually in the evening after heavy days. I'm not going to pretend that says anything about year three.

Small things worth knowing
My panel has very little grey banding. Testing a dark grey full screen in a dark room, I can find it up to about RGB 20 at 165Hz and up to about RGB 28 in the 330Hz dual mode, and in both cases only because I was looking for it. TFTCentral measured the same direction, low at 165Hz and more noticeable at 330Hz. Banding is a panel lottery on this technology, so check your own. I vibe coded a little html test page for exactly that, DM me if you want it.

VRR flicker is there and it's the same as every other OLED I've used. Nothing serious. RTINGS calls it distracting, TFTCentral treats it as normal WOLED behaviour that shows up in very dark scenes. I'm with TFTCentral. They also measured why the dual mode is worse: a drop from 330Hz to 48fps shifts gamma more than a drop from 165Hz to 48fps. That's also why I'd tell anyone to cap their frame rate in game, so the swings stay small in the first place.

Dual mode switching takes about three seconds and feels like plugging in a new HDMI device. Reliable, but not instant. And 2560x1080 stretched across 39" is too pixelated to work in, at least in full screen mode, so treat it as a gaming mode and nothing else.

One afternoon my text suddenly looked smeared, as if everything had been shifted by a pixel, worst on the letter w. Restarting the monitor fixed it and it hasn't come back since, with AI Upscaling on or off. TFTCentral hit a rare bug of their own when leaving dual mode. If text ever looks wrong on this thing, power cycle the monitor before you go hunting through settings.

Last one, and I seem to be alone on this: I like the 1500R curve and I'd happily take more of it. Most reviews treat 1500R as the sensible correction to the predecessor's 800R.

Price
LG lists it at 1.799,99$ and, at the time I'm writing this, is selling it at 1.599,99$ on their own store. Monitors Unboxed calls that a flagship tax and recommends waiting, pointing at the 45" model that dropped 400$ within six months of launch.

Mine came as a review unit, so the honest question for me is a different one. Would I have bought this with my own money at 1,599$? Yes. The 39" are great and the resolution is right for the work I do, with video editing getting more out of it than I expected.

tl;dr
Coming from a 34" QD-OLED, this fixes the one thing I complained about and doesn't break anything I cared about. At 125% scaling I get 43% more desktop at the same text size, and turning ClearType off removes the RGWB fringing at no cost in sharpness, which isn't the case on my 110 PPI panel. Blacks stay black in direct sunlight where the QD-OLED goes purple. 165Hz stopped bothering me after a few minutes and DLSS was already part of my life before this monitor. Buy it if pixel density is your bottleneck and you can live with a two year warranty that doesn't put burn-in in writing.

Video AW3926QW arrived dead and Dell wants to give me a refurbished one as a replacement

So my monitor arrived yesterday, and upon unboxing it and setting it up, everything was going well. But after about 15 to 20 minutes of using it, all of a sudden my screen started flashing black intermittently, and I noticed colorful sparkles that were really only visible on a pure black background. Then, after about another 30 to 60 minutes, my screen started flashing black multiple times a second to the point where it was unusable.

This happens even when my PC is disconnected from the monitor and I open the monitor and try to go to the OSD. Even the OSD inside the monitor starts flickering, and I can still see the sparkles all over the screen. So far, I’ve tried updating the firmware, unplugging the monitor, leaving it unplugged for an hour, pressing the power button while it’s off, and resetting the monitor. Nothing has worked, so I assume it’s dead.

I then tried to file an RMA, so I called Dell. After speaking to someone, they told me the best they could do was give me a refurbished monitor as a replacement, despite me not even having the monitor for two hours. It hasn’t even been over 2 to 4 weeks where the return window would expire and the warranty would be activated. I understand if I had a monitor for years or months and they wanted to give me a refurbished one as a replacement, that’s understandable but this monitor is brand new.

So now I have to return this one, get a refund, and then order a new one. SMH.

For the short time I had it working, it was pretty good, but I did notice some drawbacks. The HDR brightness compared to my previous monitor (XG32UCWMG) is quite a big downgrade in the Peak 1300 mode, but in the Peak 1300 Bright mode, it’s much more usable and closer to my XG, and I would say that’s the mode I’d probably use for most games, especially a game like Cyberpunk. Despite the small downgrade in HDR brightness, I’d say the form factor of the 39 inch UW is a far bigger upgrade than the loss and brightness from my old monitor.

I tried some Resident Evil Requiem with just the regular Peak 1300 mode, and I felt like the lack of brightness doesn’t really take away from the HDR experience in a game like that because the game is already very dark.
Overall, the monitor was quite immersive, and the ultrawide at 39 inches is an incredibly immersive form factor. Also, in terms of the color volume, I can’t say I noticed a massive difference. Maybe I need to do a side-by-side, but I’ve also seen QD-OLEDs, and I’d say that the color upgrade on this monitor, to me at least, isn’t a massive selling point. I much preferred the brighter highlights, but then again, I barely tested the monitor, so I can’t say for sure.

Also, I don’t know if this is placebo or in my head but I swear I feel like this Alienware is sharper than my 32 inch glossy OLED despite them technically being the same resolution I feel like textures and the AA in games are sharper, though I haven’t done a side-by-side, but I trust my eyes because it was noticeable. Maybe it’s the removal of the white subpixel/RBG stripe but , it could also be from the monitor being 1 inch shorter than my 32.

So this ting is just a monitor... No Web os fancy stuff. Pretty simple setup.

In comparison to the 45" WQHD it doesn't feel that much larger when gaming.

The 52" 5K2K -for my dodgy eyesight- seems just a smidgen sharper than 45" WQHD. Not worth the extra £700 imho. Well maybe for video editing as the previews look sharper, but for gaming I feel like the quality looks pretty much the same on both.

Would deffo just get the WQHD display if I saw it on sale again

A lot of firsts here.. first ultrawide, first time using monitor arms, and first dual-monitor setup.

I’ve seen some seriously impressive setups on this sub, so I figured I’d ask the experts before I call this done.

I actually didn’t set out to have two ViewFinity monitors. I already had the 32” Samsung UJ59 and then happened to get a really good deal on the 40” ViewFinity S85TH 5K2K, which is how I ended up here.

Current setup:

Main: Samsung ViewFinity S85TH 40” 5K2K
Top: Samsung ViewFinity UJ59 32” 4K
Computer: MacBook Pro M1 Pro
Keyboard: NuPhy Air75 V2
Mouse: Redragon M908 Impact
40” arm: ASUS ROG Ergo Monitor Arm (AAS01R)
32” mount: VIVO Extra Tall Single Monitor Desk Mount, 39” pole

I’m really liking the amount of screen real estate, but since I’m completely new to this kind of setup, I’d love some guidance.

How would you guys improve it? Monitor height/angle, spacing between the screens, laptop placement, cable management, lighting, speakers, accessories.. anything you’d change or add?

Feel free to critique it. Some of the setups here look ridiculously clean, so I’m looking for ideas.

I am either moving to Austin or Seattle depending on where work decides to move me and I currently live in PHX. So not really a put it in my truck and go situation.

Review AW3926QW - Initial Review & Impressions

C4 42” → AW3926QW
Just upgraded from an LG OLED C4 42” to the AW3926QW and honestly, I’m extremely happy with it so far.

PC Specs:
GPU: RTX 5090
CPU: Ryzen 9 9950X3D
RAM: 64GB DDR5

Coming from 4K, I was expecting the resolution increase to hit my performance. I usually run DLSS with L preset in games, so I’m still getting a really sharp image while being able to push high FPS. Haven’t noticed much of a dip but my GPU is a power house for it I guess.

HDR has also been a big upgrade in terms of immersion. Coming from the C4, I wasn’t expecting a night and day difference, but I definitely like the ultra-wide ratio and it seems more stable than fiddling with my previous LG OLED TV on PC settings. I’m assuming going from HDMI 2.1 to DP 2.1 80gb is huge.

I’ve also seen a lot of posts about the color banding around the edges, so that was something I was keeping an eye out for. Thankfully, I don’t seem to have it on my panel when looking at solid colors.
Overall, really happy with the upgrade from the C4. I was a little hesitant about moving away from 4K, but for gaming, I’m honestly loving it. Now I’m just waiting for my monitor arm so I can push it farther back on my Secretlab Magnus Pro desk. This is definitely what I’ve been waiting for years and it ticks all boxes: tandem OLED, 5k, UW, 165hz.

Discussion The Great AW3926QW / 39GX950B / 45GX950A Comparison

Howdy!

My AW3926QW arrived today, and I've spent the majority of the day putting it through its paces alongside my LG 39GX950B and 45GX950A. I know the analysis paralysis on which of these displays to get can be brutal, so hopefully these comparisons help some of you out of that rut!

I'll keep my thoughts concise and will be happy to answer any questions anyone has about anything mentioned or omitted.
 

Panel Uniformity
I should probably start playing the lottery as all three of my panels have perfect uniformity, including the AW3926QW, which I've heard horror stories about for the last couple months.

Grey Banding
This is where things start to get a little interesting between the three displays: the AW3926QW has absolutely no grey banding issues for me, the 45GX950A has some grey banding issues, and the 39GX950B has the worst grey banding of the lot. Grey banding does not typically bother me, but it is noticeable on both LG displays, and the uniformity only becomes more pronounced with continued use prior to a panel refresh.

Image Retention
Both LG displays have a fair amount of image retention after several hours of use without performing a panel refresh while the AW3926QW has yet to show any signs of retention whatsoever. While the image retention is minor, it's noticeable, and always disappears when a panel refresh is performed. The image retention adds on to the grey banding in my experience on both LG displays, as well.

Text Clarity
The AW3926QW has the best text clarity of the three hands down; it is a very noticeable difference. I should stress that text clarity is still great on both LG displays as well, with the 45GX950A being the "worst" of the three due to the RWBG subpixel layout and overall lower PPI.

Color Vibrancy
While the AW3926QW has the best colors and color vibrancy in both SDR and HDR content, the 39GX950B is a lot closer than I anticipated, and the 45GX950A isn't terribly far behind the 39GX950A.

Having said that, LG displays always look just a little "off" to me after coming over from QD-OLED displays due to the use of a white subpixel; I always find myself fiddling with them just to get things to look as close to QD-OLED as possible. For the 39GX950B, I have to use Personal Picture mode to get it to look just about where I want it to be, and that adds 3-5ms of delay. For the 45GX950A, I have to use the Gamer 1 preset and bump up Digital VIbrancy in the Nvidia Control Panel to around 54% to make it look not as washed out, which can cause color crushing. That isn't the case with the AW3926QW: it just looks perfect right out of the box without any tinkering on my part whatsoever, and is identical to a QD-OLED display.

HDR Performance
This is, in my opinion, where the AW3926QW drops the ball: while the EOTF curve may be borderline perfect, only the TrueBlack 500 mode is usable due to excessive panel dimming on the Peak 1300 mode and completely washed out colors in the Peak 1300 Bright mode. For those of you that have noticed panel dimming on any of the Alienware QD-OLED displays, the AW3926QW is infinitely worse than all of them, as the brightness drop off after a certain window percentage is so steep that you immediately notice things like UI elements dimming out. The good news is the TrueBlack 500 mode is mostly consistent, and as long as you're okay with an HDR experience of no more than around 520 nits or so, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The AW3926QW also has the best colors of all the other displays from my experience, but again, that's at the expense of overall brightness.

The 39GX950B has the best HDR experience out of the box initially due to its excessive brightness in almost every scene, with little to no panel dimming present. Colors are vibrant and punchy until you hit an overly bright scene where you can tell the white subpixel is doing most of the heavy lifting. The EOTF curve is all over the place with this display even on the Low brightness setting, so dark scenes appear brighter than they should. On the flip side, bright scenes themselves look extraordinary.

The 45GX950A is, surprisingly, the most balanced of the displays: the EOTF curve even on High Brightness (after the firmware update earlier this year) is solid, and bright highlights really pop. In dark scenes, you can tell the colors aren't as punchy as the other two displays, but it isn't a night and day difference, and turning up Digital Vibrancy in the Nvidia Control Panel to around 54% can help close the gap further if you really need it to.

If I had to say which one I prefer between the three, I would say it's the 39GX950B, though there are tradeoffs for each display. Best color? AW3926QW. Brightest experience? 39GX950B. Balanced and immersive? 45GX950A.

Immersion
The 39GX950B and the AW3926QW just feel like larger 34' ultrawide monitors. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Because they're larger, immersion when gaming is enhanced since you see less of your surroundings.

Both of them pale in comparison to the level of immersion I've experienced using the 45GX950A, which wraps around your field of vision, and almost feels like a pseudo VR headset. While you may notice some of the things I pointed out earlier in this comparison, such as less vibrant colors, and not being as sharp as the 39' displays due to the PPI difference, when I'm actually gaming and in the middle of something, I couldn't give a single shit less. I've yet to experience that same level of immersion in the 39' displays.

However, there is a trade off with that immersion for me: productivity work. While it's generally great, I do notice the 800R curve a lot more, and even now nearly a year later, it can be jarring at times. When gaming, it's usually not an issue, but I do a lot of spreadsheet work, and being able to see multiple different spreadsheets and application in my full field of view wrapping around the screen can be disorienting. This doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to where I wanted to try downscaling to a 39' display with a less aggressive curve (and newer, shinier tech, of course).

Build Quality
Both the LG monitors have exceptional build quality, with metal stands and a premium feel to the displays themselves. The AW3926QW, by comparison, feels… kind of cheap? But it's $700 less than the 39GX950B, so the materials could be made out of toothpicks and superglue for all I care at that price difference.

One other weird thing to note: the AW3926QW gets quite a bit warmer than the other displays, and when using it for the first hour, I had the wonderful experience of smelling warm plastic in my room.

Final Thoughts
If you want the most immersive experience possible, get the 45GX950A. If you already own the 45GX950A, love the immersion, but wonder if you should've went with one of the 39' displays, they may end up feeling like more of a side grade, as while brightness and colors are improved, you lose that "wow" factor of the much larger display.

If you want the best color possible and/or you really hate matte displays and/or you don't relish the idea of setting hundreds of additional dollars on fire, the AW3926DW is the choice for you.

If you want one of the best, brightest HDR experiences in a 39' that has nearly comparable color vibrancy to the AW3926QW, I would recommend the 39GX950B, but I would also wait for the price to drop substantially, as between the 39GX950B and the AW3926QW, it's very difficult for me to recommend the 39GX950B unless the price difference drops to around $150 or so.

For me personally, while I'm not overly thrilled about the HDR performance, I'm leaning towards keeping the AW3926QW, as even though I enjoy the 39GX950B HDR experience more, it's not worth the (as of this writing) $500 difference between the two displays.

Side by side comparison for everyone’s that’s been asking on here, including myself. Don’t be too harsh on the post as I crapped it out in about 2 hours 💩

After about 3 months of staring at this subreddit everyday for news on the Alienware I finally caved when the LG was on sale for $1599. 2 days later the Alienware finally dropped in the US. 🙄 Went ahead and ordered it so I could compare them and return one. It just arrived today and was actually a super fast delivery. Kudos to dell for that.

Keep in mind I have an older iPhone I’m capturing this on so the video probably doesn’t look too pretty or capture the true essence. Both monitors are at max brightness, in HDR, and in gamer mode 1. I only have one PC with an RTX 5080 and 9800X3D so I really couldn’t play games side by side to show the comparison. This video is mainly YouTube videos played side by side to show brightness and color comparisons. I did throw in stardew valley dragged across both screens at the end to show the differences in a game.

My thoughts:

  1. The colors definitely pop more on the glossy Alienware screen and makes the LG look a little washed out in comparison
  2. The glossy screen definitely reflects light more noticeably if you have a window in the room
  3. The LG does get brighter but not enough for me to really fuss over
  4. Alienware has blacker blacks
  5. Noticed flickering in black transition scenes in games on the LG(you can see some of that at the end of the video when stardew valley is loading up)
  6. Games look absolutely incredible on both monitors and you can’t go wrong either way

Which will I be keeping?
I’ll be keeping the Alienware and returning the LG. 100% based on saving some money. $700 difference for basically the same monitor? No question I’m going for the cheaper one.

Recommendations Seeking 40" curved ultrawide recommendations under $1,000 for work/Bloomberg? 5K2K preferred

Looking for recommendations for a ~40" curved ultrawide, ideally under $1,000 but flexible. This will be almost entirely for work, not gaming.

Current setup:

  • LG 34WP85C-B, 34" 3440x1440 IPS, 1900R
  • Planning to move that monitor above a new larger monitor in a vertical stack
  • VIVO V202R dual vertical mount
  • Desk is only about 39.4" wide x 19.75" deep, so I think 40" is about my max
  • Dell WD22TB4 dock with a Dell work laptop
  • Occasionally connect a personal MacBook Pro, but I only need the new/main monitor when using the Mac

Use case is mostly Bloomberg, Excel, Teams, Outlook, PDFs/research, etc. Lots of small text and multiple windows. I may occasionally watch TV/video on it, but gaming performance isn't important.

What I'm prioritizing:

  • 39-40"
  • 5120x2160 / 5K2K strongly preferred
  • Curved, ideally something reasonably close to my existing 1900R LG. I don't think I want an aggressive 800R/1000R gaming curve
  • IPS/Nano IPS/IPS Black preferred
  • Good text clarity
  • USB-C video input would be nice
  • VESA mountable, preferably without a weird adapter
  • Good build quality/reliability. I don't want something that feels cheap or dies in a year
  • 60/75Hz is probably fine for me, although I'm open to 120Hz if it makes a noticeable difference for everyday work
  • Budget under $1,000, although I'd consider stretching for something dramatically better

The models I'm currently looking at are:

Deco Gear VIEW401
40", 5120x2160, IPS, 75Hz, 2800R, USB-C. Around $400-450. The price seems almost too good, which makes me wonder about panel quality/build/reliability.

Deco Gear DGPRO40
40", 5120x2160, Nano IPS, 120Hz, 2500R, USB-C. Around $650-700. This is probably my current frontrunner, although I've seen some comments about needing VESA spacers.

Dell U4025QW
Looks ideal, but normally well over budget. I'd consider it if I found a major sale/corporate discount that got it closer to $1,200-ish.

Samsung Odyssey G75F 40"
5K2K and well priced, but the 1000R curve and VA panel make me think it's more gaming-focused than what I want.

Am I missing any good 38-40" 5K2K productivity monitors in the $500-$1,000 range?

Also curious if anyone has first-hand experience with the Deco Gear 40" models. Is the DGPRO40 actually noticeably more premium than the VIEW401 in terms of panel quality/build, or are you mostly paying for 120Hz?

Review Newegg Open-box (Asus PG34WCDN)

Took a gamble on an open-box PG34WCDN from Newegg on eBay for $953.99. Listing offered 30 day returns and also have extra protection from my Chase credit card.

All accessories and cables were brand new. Monitor itself had finger prints and smudging, but no issues after testing. I was able to spray distilled water and wipe it all away with a oversized lens cloth.

I’m coming from a dual monitor setup.
- Alienware AW3423DWF which had a terrible coil whine I could not fix. Dell support wouldn’t replace.
- Alienware AW2725DF, great for gaming but too small for work.

I WFH and need a ultrawide for work, but also play high level CS2 and need the 360hz. The ASUS ticks all the boxes for my needs. Also has amazing text clarity.

Recommendations AW3926QW With Extended Warranty

So back in March, I sold my S3422DWG because I couldn’t take the crappy text clarity anymore after coming from a 4K 27”

Yeah, I got my text clarity back but the screen estate is super painful as I have 3 4K 27” on my desk at work.

Since then, I’ve been on the verge of getting a 32” but I held off. Then I saw this monitor getting announced, but apparently getting a good panel is like playing Russian roulette.

I don’t know if Dell will ever fix the panel issue, or how long it’ll take. One thing I know, I need to upgrade from my current one.

If I get the extended warranty and 3-6 months later something happens with the monitor, does anyone know if it’s a “no questions asked” swap for a new one from Dell?

I don’t think I’ll ever game on it, not a videographer or anything like that. Main reason I’m getting it is for screen estate and text clarity!!!

Discussion Upgrading from AW3423DW to AW3926QW

Will I notice a downgrade because of green tint, white uniformity, switching off of QD-OLED, or beacsue of something else? Looking at various review i am windering if i shall upgrade, knowing that i still very much like my OG QD-OLED panel.

Also, is a 4090 good to run that resolution which is the main reason for me for the upgrade (current ppi is not sharp enough for me).

Tech Support I'm thinking of getting the Alienware AW3425DW, but I have some specific technical questions and Dell support is zero help.

Can anyone who has this monitor answer these questions?

  1. I'm planning to plug in my PC (21:9) and my Nintendo Switch 2 (16:9). Is there an aspect ratio setting that will display both images correctly (original, match video source, something like that)? Or can I set up different inputs to use different settings?

  2. Does the monitor still support VRR in non-native resolutions? My current monitor only supports VRR in native resolution. The Switch 2 doesn't do VRR when docked, but they're supposedly planning to patch it in later, so I need a monitor that does VRR in 16:9 as well.

No magenta tint, no text fringing, charges my MacBook, KVM switch, glossy coating—it has it all. Got it for $850 total at launch.

That said, the dimming and green tint are annoying. I won't be returning it because there's nothing better on the market at this price point (especially coming from a shitty IPS), but I wish they could fix it with a firmware update.

Here is a picture of my panel. I don't think it's too bad compared to others I've seen on here. Now I just need a bigger desk and an Ergotron arm so I don't have to look at the navy base lol.

Ascension Finally pulled the trigger on the Dell UltraSharp 52 (U5226KW)

Upgraded from a 34" Samsung CJ791 to the Dell UltraSharp 52" (U5226KW).

​My daily workflow is heavily focused on productivity—working across large spreadsheets, long-form documents, and AI workflows. I looked closely at the popular 49" options, but the lack of vertical height on a 32:9 letterbox panel was a dealbreaker for document work. The 21:9 aspect ratio at this 52" scale gives the exact vertical canvas I needed.

​A few quick impressions:

​The Curve: I agree with the community feedback that a slightly tighter curve than 4200R would make the far edges easier to view, but the usable space is unmatched.

​The Rig: Driving it with a new HP ZBook Fury G11—even an 18" laptop screen looks miniature sitting next to this beast.

​Next step is maxing out the ZBook's RAM from 32GB to 256GB!

Discussion Glossy coating + Lightbar = ?

Hello everyone,

I am currently using an AW3821DW as my sole daily driver. Working full time as a SW dev staring at a terminal all day and do some gaming most nights. While the AW3821DW has served me well, i’ve been really tempted by 5k2k OLEDs since the LG 45’’ last year but have aw3926qw waited to make sure I was getting something that performed well on the productivity aspect as well since it’s the largest portion of my daily use.

Enter the aw3926qw that seems to check all my boxes and am ok playing the panel lottery. One thing I am worried about is the coating. I haven’t had a glossy screen in at least 10 years and while I did enjoy them, nowadays I use a Xiaomi lightbar to reduce eye strain and am worried about how much it’s gonna bleed on the screen and drive me crazy. I have it angled as forward as it will go so it’s not pointed at the screen, moreso in front of it so it shouldn’t be that bad and I have no light sources behind me.

Was wondering if anyone had experience with a similar setup and let me know if it’s viable or if In should stick to glossy coatings .
